2004 Saturn Ion. Consumer writes in regards to electronic power steering failure. The consumer stated she first started having front suspension problems, which the dealer fixed free of charge. The exhaust was leaking and she paid to have it replaced, along with the catalytic converter. Also, the horn stopped working. The consumer received a letter in July 2012, from gm stating the warranty was being extended because the electric power steering could fail. On December 16, 2013, the power steering failed, as the consumer was leaving a parking lot. She had to use extra force to turn the steering wheel. After a couple of minutes, it was back to normal. A test revealed, there was indeed a failure. When the consumer called gm, she was informed the extended warranty had expired on 11/28/13 the consumer no longer owns the vehicle. Updated 02/5/14.

The contact owns a 2003 Saturn Ion. While driving in reverse approximately 2 mph, the contact heard a loud noise coming from the engine and suddenly the engine warning indicator began to illuminate. I own a 2006 Saturn Ion. My car is at 80,000 but since this started a few months ago I would say 74,000 miles was the occurrence. The car was running rougher and rougher. I knew the sound to be an exhaust leak. I had my mechanic look and he just checked the hoses, and saw nothing. I kept driving with it. I started getting bad headaches, and slightly nauseous when I drove long distances. I travel 400 miles roundtrip when I visit family out of town at least once a month. I also noticed the odor of exhaust in the cabin when I started my car. I cracked my windows when I drove and when I had a chance my mechanic found I had a cracked exhaust manifold. He said he has seen the same crack in the same place on the same gm engine 2. 2l 4cyl about 6 times this year already. Chevy has it on cobalt I think. He said it is probably a factory defect since it is wearing thin in the same place. Considering my car was poisoning me for months I think this qualifies as a safety concern and should be investigated. I knew the sound and warning signs because of past experience. It is a danger to the majority of drivers, because they don't.

I have a 2003 Saturn Ion 1 that I have never had any problems with. Suddenly on the first cold day of the winter it had trouble starting. After that the catalytic converter starting glowing. I have spent over $350 replacing the catalytic converter, spark plugs and wires and the air filter. I have found a recall for the Saturn l series for an ignition control module. I'm still not sure if this is the problem but if it is it will cost $650 to fix it. I may not have an l series car but they were made with the same engine. I don't understand how a catalytic converter can be destroyed so quickly (under 100,000 miles) without something being wrong. Please help!!!.

The area in my trunk above the muffler has started getting extremely hot. Items stored in the trunk are hot to the touch and the metal in the trunk is too hot to lay a hand on. I took the car to the dealership and was told this is normal. I have never dropped items while removing them from the trunk because they were too hot to touch and I've had the car since February 2003. I have had constant problems with this car and it is in the shop every month to month and a half being repaired. I have had problems with the driver's side turn signal (4 times), radio, interior fan, transmission, gear shift, brakes, tires, hood latch, windshield, etc.
There was an egg smell within the cabin and on the outside of the vehicle. The smell was worse when the heat was on. The smell made the occupants nauseous and sick. The dealership was unable to identify what caused the smell but has given a lot of scenarios.
