1 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2006 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 11/19/2014

It was about 32 degrees in the morning. I started my car and warmed it up for about 5 minutes or so. Long enough to defrost both the front and rear windows. I drove a little over mile going about the city speed limit of 45. The vehicle started shaking from the engine area. I pulled off the road into a parking lot and the vehicle began to lose power. I was able to coast into a parking space. The check engine light came on at some point. I turned the vehicle off, I waited a few minutes and turned the vehicle back on. It started fine I drove it the 10 miles to the dealership with no problems, check engine light was still on. The dealership advised that the ice had formed on the throttle body and when it melted water got into the throttle body. He could put a piece on it that would cost about $900. 00 but he could not guarantee that it would keep this from happening again. I didn't think about it at the time but the same thing happened last year and since the vehicle starts right back up I didn't really think about it. But the fact that the vehicle loses power while I am driving is a concern.

2 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2006 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 02/15/2014

While traveling between 70-75mph on I-35 southbound between 2nd st. Merge and 15th street exit in edmond ok, we went to change lanes (middle lane to right lane) and there was a sudden boom, the car lost control, began to spin out of control (numerous slides and 2-360 deg turns and being flung in a backwards motion). As we attempted to get to the side of the road, our car began to spin out of control - we spun into a 360 degree turn, car caught fire as the oil was dumped from my car and sprayed all along the underneath of my car and tires, we slid sideways towards concrete barrier seperating n-s bound traffic, went into a second 360 degree turn, slid sideways - as we started heading once again forward towards oncoming traffic the vehicle suddenly started going backwards (even though car was in drive). . . We finally stopped facing oncoming traffic in sideways motion. Tow/mechanic inspected the car and found 3-4inch hole in the engin block - diagnosis - that push pin broke without warning and blew the hole. No warning was given of any kind of engine malfunction issue - no warning lights, nothing. We could of / should of been killed (per the eye witnesses who stopped to help us), our only saving grace was the oil which sprayed the road and our tires keeping us upright and not rolling. This needs to be investigated, recalled and fixed before someone is not as lucky as us.

3 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2006 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 01/04/2014

The contact submitted an email complaint and requested to have the complaint submitted verbatim to the email submission. 2006 Saturn Ion general motors case number: 71-1262884818 dear ms. Davis: I am writing this letter to express my extreme dissatisfaction with a recent repair that was done on my 2006 Saturn Ion. On Saturday, January 4, 2014, my son arrived home with my car and said he could not turn the car off. Finding this strange, I went outside to try, and could not remove the key from the ignition or turn off the car. I called emergency road assistance to see if they could assist me. Upon their arrival, they could not get the key out, so I had the technician to follow me to the nearest auto repair shop. Once there, the emergency road technician received instructions over the phone on how to at least turn the car off by removing a fuse. I locked my car, with the key still in the ignition. Between the time I dropped my car off, until the shop was scheduled to open on Monday, the temperatures plummeted to a record low of at least 45 degrees below zero. I was informed that my locks were frozen and my car was not accessible. The extremely cold temperatures did not allow merlin access to the inside of my car. Merlin?s was able to determine what the problem was, and that they had already verified it could only be fixed by the manufacturer of the car. The vehicle was towed to a dealer. The dealer told me the iginition switch needed to be replace. Next, I contacted the general motors customer service center to report what had happened. Gm informed me that the ignition switch has been redesigned to avoid the nature of repairs such as mine, from happening in the future. The ignition switch should definitely be classified as a recall.

4 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2006 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 03/25/2013

I first bought my 2006 Saturn Ion in March of 2013. Three days later I notice that when I would get on the highway my car would sway extremely bad. Our hwy speed is 75. Going 70mph was too much and it would sway a lot. Mind you I was pregnant at the time. The car spun out as I was exiting the highway. I was terrified because cars were right behind me. Thank god I got out of the way before I got hit. You can understand how upset I was due to the fact that I was 4months pregnant at the time. Since then my husband has spun out 5 times driving our car. We've taking it to the mechanics multiple times and they don't even know what to do with it. Our wheel alignments are fine. Also, our key gets stuck in the ignition a lot upon turning it off. So we have to use the button which is in the steering wheel just to get them out. Also, lately the car picks and chooses when it wants to accelerate. Lately I can floor it and the car will still be going 30mph. Also, lately when we go to turn on the car, it takes awhile and makes a sound as if the battery is dead, but then it soon comes on. I have had nothing but problems with this car from the start. I thought this was a good buy, but everyday I regret it and I fear for me, my husband, and my child's safety. Please do something about this issue. Matter of fact just take our cars. We don't need them fixed. Just take them please!.

5 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2004 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 10/11/2009

I tried to start my 2004 Saturn Ion at about 11 pm last night and it took fifteen minutes for it to turn over. The temperature was about 28 degrees (f). This has happened several dozen times over the past few years, always when the temperature is below freezing. I know that Saturn is aware of this problem and that it is acknowledged to be a problem with the ignition. I have found reports of hundreds of other Ion owners who have experienced this problem. I think this needs to be recalled and fixed by Saturn as sitting for 10-20 minutes or more in freezing temperatures waiting for one's car to start is not safe, especially at night. Please make this a recall issue!!.

6 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2006 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 06/18/2009

Bought my Saturn Ion 2 2006 in 2005 obviously brand new and was talked into purchasing a $1500 bumper to bumper warranty. I immediately had problems but was told by Saturn mechanics nothing was wrong with my car. In 2009 as I was getting home the key got stuck in the ignition and wouldn't turn off, I couldn't turn off the car at all. I was lucky that the dealership was open and able to unplug the battery. They fixed it but the warranty wouldn't pay, so I paid out of pocket to fix it. Well, last Sunday it happened again, in 105 degree heat. I had no where to take it since dealerships are closed sundays. My car ran for over 5 hours because no one could figure out how to unplug the battery. Only a professional knows how to turn off the car safely, yet many people risked turning it off. I am sure some people would find it easy to turn off the car by disconnecting the battery but still it not safe. My car was so hot no one could touch it, I was afraid it was going to start on fire. This is a very common problem and needs to be investigated and recalled. We have to be able to turn off an engine. Please investigate this issue, Saturn nor gm will take responsibility for this defect, even though when you google Saturn Ion 2 2006 all the reviews say the same thing about the ignition cylinder.

7 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2003 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 02/12/2009

On 3 occasions this winter, my 2003 Saturn Ion has failed to start. After the first 2, the battery was replaced. I now doubt the battery was faulty, because the problem seems to be intermittent and the engine would roll over, but not start. This morning (about 35 degrees), I attempted to start the car and it was very sluggish and would not start. I attempted to charge it and ended up walking my daughter 5 blocks to daycare and calling a ride to work. When I returned home 3 hours later, it still did not want to start and then ran sluggish. Online searches indicate hundreds of reports of a faulty ignition module. That will be my next repair/replacement. The car has 98000 miles. We previously owned a 1995 Saturn sc2 for 10 years with 150000 miles and no trouble.

8 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2005 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 02/05/2009

1. Events leading up to failure I was getting ready to leave for work. The time of day was 9am. The temperature had been hovering around freezing all night. The vehicle had not been driven since the previous day at around 9pm. I unlocked my vehicle using keyless entry - driver door only. I inserted my key in the ignition, closed the door, pushed the clutch to the floor while fastening my seatbelt. I then turned the key to the start position. The engine did not start - the starter did not engage at all. When I released the key, the security light (an amber "padlock" icon) started flashing slowly - once per second. I then followed the restart procedure for this situation according to the owner manual - simply wait until the light stops flashing, turn the key to lock, then restart. Ten minutes later, the security light stopped flashing and remained illuminated. I then turned the key to lock, and then restarted engine. 2. The failure, how often, its consequences: the vehicle did not start due to a failure of, or a malfunction of, some component of the factory vehicle security system. It has happened a total of three times between the incident date and March 30, 2009. It only seems to occur when the temperature overnight hovers around freezing, or drops below freezing. The consequences of this failure for me have been minimal, but I was very fortunate in each instance to be parked in a safe place, where my prompt egress was not necessary. I am reporting this situation to the odi because of the potential consequences of this failure occurring during normal driving - if I stall the engine in heavy traffic and am not able to restart for ten minutes until the security light stops flashing, I would be in a very dangerous situation, and my vehicle would present a significant hazard to other drivers. 3. What was done to correct: nothing has been done to correct this failure, as my dealership has no current solution.

9 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2003 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 12/23/2008

Car will not start in temperatures near 32 degrees or less. Ignition switch and battery have already been replaced. Car starts to crank then stalls out and service light comes on. Must wait 10-15 minutes to try again. If lucky it will start on 2nd try, otherwise 3rd. This has been going on for past 3 weeks when temps dropped.

10 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2007 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 11/21/2007

I purchased my 2007 Ion in October 2007. Within a month of its purchase, I was at the dealer getting the car washed and mentioned that the car was "breathing heavy" like it wanted to stall. The sales person pacified me by mentioning to tighten the gas cap with 3 - 5 clicks. The wanting to stall and heavy breathing continued, so the science project began. I tried several different gas stations- may it was bad gas; no. I tried switching to medium grade gas; no. The car seems to idle low: 600rpms. It would shake and rumble like it s "coughing. " I brought it to the dealer in February 2008. They found a six inch shard of metal in the exhaust system. They didn't show it to me. The dealer replaced the whole exhaust system. The problem still existed. I brought it back again. The dealer replaced the catalytic converter and a sensor. The problem still existed. I brought it in a third time. A field inspector was to be in the area. He couldn't make it so they consulted with him over the telephone and the report back to me was that they couldn't duplicate the stalling, although they could hear the "heavy breathing" the car is working in normal operating conditions. I don't accept this! the car has a defect and tries to stall weekly! the majority of my driving is on the weekends which is when the problem is most evident.

11 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2003 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 12/02/2006

12 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2003 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 10/01/2004

2003 Saturn Ion will not start if weather is under 50 degrees. This has happened since purchasing the car in 2/2004. The Saturn dealer states they have had numerous complaints but is not a recall. Car does eventually start however it sometimes takes up to 20 minutes and I have been stranded at work, unable to arrive at work on time and have been stranded in dangerous areas of town.

13 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2003 Saturn ION

Failure Date: 10/18/2003

When I bought my car it wouldn't start, the dealer said it was because it sat for a long time. This problemhas been constantly been an issue since in extreme weather. I was told during one shop inspection it was electrical and they have seen a lot of this but don't know what causes it. With this case it has shut my radio on and off and a big issue that I have is when I am stopped with my foot on my brake the engine will revve up and jerk forward. This happens in the city when I'm driving at slower speeds. I've had to run off the road to avoid hitting people, the only thing that saves me from hitting anyone at lights or signs is my safety gap between me and a front car. I've been late for work, ruined vacations, been stranded with an infant in 100 degree weather, and wasted a lot of money trying to find the problems. I bought it new and have heard every excuse for the problems. . . You guys have finally stepped in on one of the problems we have been having now gm needs to answer the rest. I'm not the only one with these problems. If you do a search online you can pull up 100s of issues exactly the same. I have all my receipts when I took it onto Saturn dealers. Now I have doors that don't seal but I'm sure this is because it's old or other excuses. I had to buy another car because my kids aren't safe in it. I can't even have a clean conscious trading it in so I still am stuck with it. I have complained about this issue before but no one listens.
