Saturn ION owners have reported 147 problems related to other fuel system pump (under the other fuel system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
The car failing to start on the first ignition cycle and a smell of fuel while driving and after the car as turned off was noticed. A week later fuel is now considerably leaking from near the rear of the car. A recall has been issued for a fuel pump problem on the 2007 Ion, but only in certain states, illinois not included. Obviously, this is a major safety issue and yet another defective part/system from Saturn/gm. As gm dealerships are booked repairing the faulty ignition switches, I have to wait over a week for the repair to get looked at. The choice is now risking fire/explosion on the car as the leak is very near the hot exhaust pipe or not going to work for a week.

Because of a 'hidden recall' by gm, I was driving down the road when I smelled fuel. My fuel pump had become defective, causing a leak, and therefore, rusted fuel lines, which then broke. This 'hidden recall' was not covered at the dealership and I had to get gm involved on a corporate level, and even then, I still had to pay for their mistake! my car was steadily dripping fuel, and aside from emptying the tank there was nothing I could do about this. It is dangerous, and gm knows about it but will not acknowledge the danger in the situation. I have children. What if the car would have caught fire? then would they have listened?? it is absolutely absurd that they would not warn owners of these vehicles (even the dealership claimed to know many others in my situation exactly) when it is something so dangerous, let alone make them pay for the repair. I am absolutely disgusted.
The Saturn Ion 2007 that I own is bleeding gas. Fuel lines are rusted near the plastic retain clip. Fuel pump plastic is cracked, fuel tank has rusted in a small but significant spot. Recall #09v419000 is not being adhered to by gm. This is the most unsafe problem I have ever heard of. I live in virgina, very humid state. 100% humidity is common. I should have been notified of the problem since it is recalled. If this has not caused multiple fires and fatalities it would be a miracle. My complaint is the state specificness of the recall leaves lots of people without notifacation of a very serious problem with those cars.

Have fuel leak fuel leak from fuel pump module top of tank dripping aheadof left rear wheel.
My fuel pump module needs replacing. No accident occurred to initiate this issue. Started smelling a fuel odor and it has gotten stronger over the past few months. This problem seems premature, everything that I read online says a good fuel pump should last at least 300,000 miles.
Tl-the contact owns a 2006 Saturn Ion. The contact stated while driving approximately 30 mph, the contact began to smell fuel in the exhaust. The failure recurred multiple times. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. The mechanic stated that the fuel pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle has not been repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 86,000.
The portion of the fuel lines near the fuel pump, which is hidden by a flexible cover underneath car, was discovered to be severely rusted nearly to the point of leaking, requiring fuel line replacement. In contrast, the portion of the fuel lines exposed underneath car was still in pristine condition. (car has been garaged at night since delivery. ) although gm has issued a recall for fuel pump leaks, the problem often is instead the fuel line has rusted through and is leaking. This problem would not be expected, and thus appears to be due to a Saturn design or manufacturing defect. Because of the prevalence and significant safety issue, the service manager expects gm will eventually issue a recall for the fuel line problem. Because the portion of the fuel line subject to severe rusting is hidden behind the flexible cover underneath the car and not the exposed section, it is likely to be noticed only after leaking occurs, resulting in a fire hazard. A recall appears desirable to inspect particularly the hidden portion of the fuel lines near the fuel pump and replace them if needed. Although a manufacturer must provide a remedy to safety-related defect a no cost to the owner, in this instance gm refuses to pay for the fuel line replacement unless the NHTSA compels them to issue a recall.
I own a 2007 Saturn Ion 3 quad coupe 2. 4l. I am currently experiencing what I feel is exactly described in recall 66615 (gm's campaign # is 12190. . . This recall is an expansion of 09v419). My exact vehicle is singled out in this recall. The only thing is that my car was not bought in nor registered in one of the qualifying states. However, due to my service to this country. . . Being stationed in California, the car was in the state of California. For nearly 2 years. I imagine the states singled out were singled out because of the heat in those locales and the propensity of plastic to dry rot. As you can see from the recall description, the plastic fuel pump is susceptible to cracking/leaking. As a member of the marine corps from 2006-2010, I was not required to register my vehicle with the state of California. The car was bought in iowa. . . Where I now currently reside. I would appreciate some consideration to be included and covered under this recall. I am experiencing a very steady gas leak from the vicinity of the gas tank. My car has lost much responsiveness, is difficult to start, and is now inoperable because the leak has gotten far worse. Please feel free to call or email me for any more ?'s, at which time I should also be able to provide you with the VIN. Thanks in advance!!.
Fuel pump cracked; difficulty steering; ignition switch failed.
On may 14th, I parked my vehicle and the windows were down. We smelt a strong order of gas coming from the rear of my Saturn. My friend laid uder the car with a flash light and noticed gas coming down the side of the fuel tank. He had me bring it in to him on the 15th to his auto hobby shop and he placed it on the lift only to discover that all sides of the tank have presense of gas. He told me he needs to drop the tank because he can't see the direct source of where the gas is coming from. I went online and saw that there was a recall with simalar description of symptoms I have noticed. When I called my local dealer, he said that my problem was addressed and already handled whe the recall first came out. I am having the same problem it may seem. If it is the same issue with the fuel pump and it was replaced by a dealership as stated it needed to be, wouldnt it be gm's responsibilty if the fuel pump they replaced it with was also faulty? I drive 3 grand babies around on a daily basis and this is not safe. I could understand if it was not on recall and there was just a radom thing that happened. Could you pesse advise me on steps to follow?.
The fuel pump cracked. The car could not be driven without gasoline spurting out on the road. There was a partial recall in several states but I was not covered by this. There was also an extended warranty in others that expired this past year. It cost $500 to repair and gm would not offer even partial compensation. The fuel pump was partly made of plastic is inferior and should be recalled everywhere. Thank you.
I had to replace my fuel pump back in March of 2013. It cost me almost $300. 00. Later I found out it was on recall. How do I get my money back? I have the receipt.
The contact owns a 2007 Saturn Ion. The contact had not experienced any failures with the vehicle until the dealer repaired it per a fuel pump assembly recall. Months later, the contact noticed strong fuel fumes emitting inside the vehicle. The manufacturer was not notified. The VIN was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 83,000.
Cracked fuel pump housing.
General motors is recalling certain model year 2007, Saturn Ion vehicles, some of these vehicles have several special coverage issues, however a condition in that the plastic supply, or return port on the fuel pump module may crack, which could cause a fuel leak. This vehicle has been identified as being covered under this particular service policy, as well as other special policies. Gm notified us, and good Chevrolet reportedly replace the fuel pump module, as covered by gm. From December 10th of 2013 to present - we are still dealing with aspects stemming from this recall issue; per our many calls to gm, as well as visits to good Chevrolet about the fuel smell and vehicle's performance good Chevrolet and gm's have been questionable in their response to our very serious concerns. Courtesy tire, our regular maintenance center, discovered that good Chevrolet damaged the fuel vent when replacing the fuel pump module, which compounds the original issue for the special policy. Ever since their negligent servicing of the vehicle gm and good have been denying any wrong doing. We filed a complain with the washington state attorney generals office and now am filing this complain due to the dangers associated with the fuel issue.

Top of fuel pump cracked and leaked gas fumes in car. Gas leaked out of car as it was driven. Faulty fuel pump problem that was recalled in a few other states. Family member has smelling problem due to past surgery and could not realize gasoline leaking from the car. Mechanic stated that fuel pump should never have cracked in this area and could have resulted in a much worse scenario.
The contact owns a 2006 Saturn Ion. The contact stated that she smelled gasoline smell inside the cabin of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnosis where the contact was informed that the fuel pump module was leaking. The contact referenced NHTSA campaign id number: 09v419000 (fuel system, gasoline) but was advised by the manufacturer that the VIN was not included in the recall. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure and current mileage was 65,000.
I have a severe gas leak in my car. The gas smell was faint at first. Then I started having problems starting my car in mornings or evenings. Then the gas became unbearable & you could see a constant drip of gasoline coming from the back passenger side of my car. I felt so scared to drive it that I took it to the nearest place. They diagnosed it as the fuel pump. I called Saturn & they said they would have to charge me $100 to see if it's the actual "special policy" that's on my car.
I was driving on the expressway when I lost all throttle response. After investigating I found it had to be the fuel pump that quit. When investigating why the fuel pump quit after a new one did not fix my problem, I noticed the wires got too hot and burned black and actually burned through the positive wire at the connector going into the fuel tank. Hot wires and burining wires inside a gas tank is not a safe combination. To top it off, I had to drill through the connector and wire in a pigtail connector purchased from the dealer since they would not sell me the whole fuel tank cover to replace it properly. Only after haggling with dealers that would not give me part number or sell me the fuel tank cover that they finally gave me the part number of 25815572 but it is under restriction to sell so that is why they sold me the "backyard mechanic fix". My worry is still that I have my family travel in the car and I do not want this thing catching fire or exploding. Is there a defect in the part is why it almost caught fire on me? and is there still a defect and that is why the part is on restriction? what is the correct, safe fix for my family? I just want a safe working vehicle and a explanation in why it is so difficult to get the part I wanted at first. It is running now but it is with the drilling through the connector, sealing it, and soldering the new wires in. I was hoping for thicker wire to maybe handle the current to the pump or an assurance that the vehicle is safe. Sorry, one last complaint. My Saturn is a California emission vehicle but is currently in mi. Why is this not covered under some of the recalls? is this like the CA cancer warnings that are only in that state? my car will only explode in those states and not michigan?.
Tl- the contact owns a 2006 Saturn Ion. The contact stated that the vehicle was repaired by the authorized dealer for NHTSA campaign id number: 09v419000 (fuel system, gasoline) and14e021000 (electrical system). The service engine sensor illuminated before and after both recall repairs. The contact indicated that the dealer replaced the ignition switch and the fuel pump but the failure recurred. The contact indicated that the service engine sensor continued to illuminate and the vehicle stalled repeatedly. The two recall repairs performed did not fix the vehicle and the failures were happening intermittently. The vehicle was towed to the authorized dealer for further inspection, diagnosis and repair. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 140,000. Dyd.

I purchased a 2007 Saturn Ion in the fall of 2008. My grandaughter took the car to California and decided to live there. A few months ago she called to tell me that she kept smelling fuel in the car when she drove. She took the car into sears and they told her she needed a new fuel pump. She kept smelling fuel and found out the sears did not repair the car so sears gave her a full refund after she complained. She took the car to a service station and had the fuel line replaced because she was told it could not be repaired. . . . It was cracked. After she had the car repaired I received a notice about the recall for Saturn Ions and the fuel system problem. I had her send me the bill for the repairs. The letter gm sent stated that if we had already made repairs for the fuel problem, they would reimburse. When I go to the gm website now, it states that the 2007 Saturn Ion has not been recalled. I have also tried calling gm with no success. Where do I sent the bill we have? why is gm not acknowledging the recall for the 2007 Saturn Ion for those bought or registered in the state of California?? thank you!.
After replacing the fuel pump last year I am now facing a cracked gas tank. I asked the mechanic if it could be due to me hitting anything, I had not been in any accidents, and I was advised there wasn't anything to indicate and outside damage. Just that the tank itself has worn away.
The fuel pump assembly unit on my 2007 Saturn Ion has cracked and developed a leak causing a significant fire and environmental hazard. There was no incident that lead to the crack, just a faulty part. There was a recall issued for this same problem, but it does not extend to the state in which I reside.
Tl - the contact owns a 2007 Saturn Ion. The contact stated that fuel fumes were emitted into the vehicle. The contact mentioned that after inspecting the vehicle he noticed that there was a fuel leak underneath the fuel tank. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The technician diagnosed that there was a leak on the fuel pump and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but did not offer any assistance since the vehicle was not included in recall NHTSA campaign id number: 09v419000 ( fuel system, gasoline:delivery:fuel pump). The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 130,000. Pm.
I had smelled a very strong gas odor in my car and contacted gm/Saturn customer service on November 28, 2012 in regards to the smell and to find out if my car was included in a recent recall for the fuel pump. I was told that the fuel pump recall was only included in certain states and my state was not included. I took my car to my mechanic on 12/14/12 and they confirmed that my car smelled of gas due to a faulty fuel pump and it needed to be replaced. They also said that the fuel pump faults were due to being in states that high heat. I live in maryland and the fuel smell came about during the summer which is very hot in the state. I contacted gm because I feel that I should be reimbursed for a faulty fuel pump since it is a fire and safety hazard.
