1 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2004 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 05/17/2017

Driving home from gym, I noticed the clutch pedal was not engaging the clutch making shifting difficult. Eventually returned home safely and upon inspection, I noticed a large firewall crack near the clutch master cylinder. The large firewall crack compromised the clutch pedal function. Also, fear of possibility of brake pedal failure and possible exposure to engine bay fumes. I spoke to a Subaru service advisor and suggested to "bring-in" for inspection. Enroute to the dealer waiting for the green light on the main street, depressed the clutch pedal and felt a snap then my clutch pedal play is none. Looked on the floor of my car to see what fell/detached, and it looked like part of the pedal bracket that attached to the clutch master cylinder. I eventually towed my car to the dealer. Are firewall supposed to crack?.

2 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2011 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 09/15/2016

Soft brake pedal that continues down to floor after pressure applied ; especially when engine cold or when on an incline. First brought to Subaru of new bern, n. C. On August 8, 2016 where they replaced brake fluid. Problem continued; on sept. 13, 2016 the master cylinder replaced under extented warrantee. Problem still exists; service manager drove car and agreed with my complaint. He also drove a 2015 model and same thing happened. On sept. 27th, manager authorized replacement again of the master cylinder and vacuum booster pump. Parts ordered. Today is October 11th, and no parts received yet. Subaru of America, cherry hill, n. 4 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2012 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 11/21/2011

Our Forester has an inconsistent brake pedal. Sometimes the pedal is firm and responsive. Sometimes the pedal goes towards the floor before it responds. We never know how far in the pedal will go. Thus far the brakes have always worked but extra time and distance are needed to stop. The problem is intermittent and has been there ever since we purchased the vehicle. The following from Subaru's recall of other 2012 models explains almost exactly how this manifests for us. Pressing the pedal lightly and subsequently having to hit the pedal harder without letting up seems to be a trigger. The pedal has also gone all the way to the floor on 2 occasions which occurred at very low speeds in parking lots. Manifestations per the paragraph below are most common and can happen at any speed including on the highway. In the recall letter sent to Subaru owners it noted that "in vehicles experiencing this condition, the driver will initially encounter a soft pedal feel and may momentarily perceive a sense of loss in braking power while the pedal is being pressed lightly. This will only continue until the pedal is pressed downward approximately 2 more inches. Effective braking function will be achieved at that point, making it possible to slow or stop the vehicle. " we have taken the vehicle to 2 dealerships and they both told us there is no problem. We returned the vehicle to one of the dealerships and they road tested it for 3 days and told us nothing is wrong. We appear to have the same problem that triggered a recall of millions of other 2012 models and we do not appear to be taken seriously. This problem is potentially life threatening, and it needs to be dealt with regardless of whether it manifests for Subaru technicians or not. I have taken the vehicle to my mechanic and he believes the master cylinder is bad but he has done no work on the vehicle.

5 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2011 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 09/29/2011

Took vehicle in for 30k maintenance. When I picked it up dealer had changed brake fluid (brakes had been functioning perfectly prior). When leaving dealer lot brake pedal went to floor and I went into oncoming traffic. Luckily oncoming vehicle dodged me. I pumped pedal and got brakes and went back into dealership. They bled brakes and said it was ready. When backing out of space brake pedal again went to floor but vehicle stopped. I called a service writer over and showed him pedal on floor. I left car and new master cylinder was ordered and installed next day. I went to pick up vehicle and again pedal went to floor and I had another service writer witness it. Took pic with cell phone. Service manager told me that it was normal for brake pedal to go to floor if engine was not running and was safe to drive. I told him engine was running and brake pedal should never go to floor if engine running or not. If booster bleeds down pedal may go somewhat lower than normal. Pedal had never went anywhere near floor before. I refused to drive car as I deemed it dangerous. If pedal was pumped it would come to normal position. He finally agreed to contact Subaru representative to look at it next week. If I had not had mechanical background and had listened to him and drove a car where the brake pedal would intermittently go to floor what could have been the results? at no time even after I mentioned it was the abs system checked for air to my knowledge. Normal bleeding at wheels will not remove air from master cylinder or abs system. Note: by "pedal going to floor" the pedal arm hits floor/carpet and pedal can go no lower. I am waiting for the Subaru representative to inspect car at this point. I emailed Subaru, but they did not seemed too concerned.

6 Brake Master Cylinder problem of the 2003 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 07/10/2006

2003 Subaru Forester purchased may 2003 1. Brakes did not feel correct - low brake pedal 2. Made appointment at aaa auto mark car care center for brakes to be checked 3. Aaa auto mark car care center person said that our master cylinder was leaking and needed to be replaced. Our vehicle mileage - 18046 - and even that the car was out of warranty (36 months maximum), they contacted the local Subaru but Subaru said seeing the car was out of the 36 month warranty period, Subaru would not pay for the part or repair. 4. We had to have the vehicle repaired so aaa auto mark car care center purchased the parts needed (1- master cylinder, 2 wheel cylinders) and replaced them. We asked for and received the old parts. 5. My husband and I have had many cars over many years and never have had to replace a master cylinder even though the mileage driven on the cars was much higher than 18046 on the Subaru.
