37 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2010 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 02/16/2017

Per service bulletin # 16-90-13, the car will stall when coming to an abrupt stop. Part of the time, the vehicle will stall when coming to a normal stop as well. This happened once while city driving when a light went from red to green as we were approaching. We were down to under 5 mph and went to accelerate again to continue with the flow of traffic. Before I could release the brake, the car stalled and almost caused us to get rear ended. So that along with the inconvenience and danger of dying at stops will push us into performing this costly repair ASAP. The stalling can occur sometimes at every stop, and sometimes it will not happen for multiple stops. The torque converter is a known issue, and is to be replaced with a more updated model with different internal components. I contacted Subaru and they informed me I was outside of my warranty so it was completely up to me.

38 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2011 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 02/14/2017

The torque converter needs to be replaced. The car was bought brand new 6 years ago. It stalled within the first few months of ownership it stalled at a stop light twice. We were stood the gas cape needed to be put on tighter and it was a sensor issue. Now 122 thousand miles later it has started doing the same thing and I have been told it is the torque converter. Dealership wants 1700 dollars. I found a bulletin. Dated 2014 that says this is a design flaw and Subaru is responsible for repair.

39 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2011 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 02/03/2017

My torque converter is locking up under breaking/coming to a stop and the engine shutters and shuts down. When the vehicle is in motion, the problem occurs upon stopping or slowing down rapidly to a slow crawl (I. E. Less than 5 mph). This issue is very repeatable and causes delay if you are trying to move out of the way of oncoming vehicles or emergency vehicles in the case of a highway backup, etc. I have read forums where several other Subaru owners are experiencing the same issue. Subaru acknowledges the problem in TSB 16-90-13r but from my research they are charging thousands of dollars for the repair. This is a safety issue with a faulty component that must be recalled, not voluntarily repaired. This is especially important since many Subaru owners are probably not yet aware of the problem.

40 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2012 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 12/27/2016

2012 70,000 miles car began to stall at stops but not all the time. More often at abrupt stops. This happens anywhere at a stop light, stop sign, freeway driving. Extremely dangerous problem. I am being told it is the torque converter air flow (something like that) and can cost $2500 to fix. It appears Subaru has known about this problem since at least 2010 and has not alerted the owners of these vehicles.

41 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2012 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 11/30/2016

My Subaru Legacy has been recently stalling when coming to a stop. It shudders and if you do not give it gas or place in neutral, the engine will die. I have read that this is caused from a faulty torque converter that Subaru is aware of but has failed to issue a recall. I'm not sure I would buy another product that isn't fully backed and supported by the manufacturer.

42 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2010 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 11/16/2016

Issue: when slowing down and then during final braking (such as at a stop sign or traffic light and also when applying the brakes to avoid a dangerous situation at speed on the highway) the car will "shudder" and then the engine will stall and stop running. This is particularly dangerous in traffic if it is necessary to get off the road. The car was brought to brewster, NY Subaru (845 278 8300) and the technician claimed it did not show any codes on the computer. I then asked for a drive with the service manager and then he was able to replicate the issue several times. After never having road tested the car until I asked for it they came back with the guess that it was the torque converter. Cost to fix aprox. $1770. 00. I understand that there was a service bulletin issued on this, but I never received it. I also never received a recall notice. Considering the danger of this fault, I believe there should have been a recall. The car currently has aprox. 88,000 miles. Subaru should be responsible for the repair.

43 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2011 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 11/07/2016

My 2011 subary Legacy 2. 5i premium stalls at every intersection while braking. This is a known issue with Subaru and they put out TSB 16-90-13r regarding the issue with the torque converter on 1/6/2014. This should be a recall as this issue causes a serious danger of being rear-ended at every intersection, as the car stops abruptly from stalling. The stalling happens whenever applying the brake and coming to a stop, at any time of day and any temperature outside.

44 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2010 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 10/29/2016

Problem is with the torque convertor similar to bulletin number 16-90-13r issued by Subaru involving Legacy and outback models from 2010-2012. My car has been stalling when coming to a hard stop. Just had my car to firestone and they diagnosed the problem and referenced the bulletin. They recommend taking to a transmission shop or Subaru dealer for repair. As this is a common problem among my car model and year I would have expected to see a recall for this as it is a potentially dangerous condition to stall at lights or stop signs. I believe Subaru should be responsible for these repairs.

45 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2012 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 09/27/2016

The contact owns a 2012 Subaru Legacy. While driving at slow speeds, the vehicle vibrated abnormally and stalled. The contact was able to restart the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the torque converter failed and needed to be replaced. The failure recurred several times. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 106,100.

46 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2011 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 08/19/2016

Upon stopping at intersections or sudden braking anywhere, the downshift causes the engine to shudder and stall. It has happened downtown at several busy intersections with vehicles coming to a stop behind me. The vehicle then needs to be put in park and restarted in the intersection. This issue matches service bulletin 16-90-13r. I have attached a write up from a dealership after diagnosing my car. The problem cited is a faulty torque converter clutch solenoid and valve body.

47 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2011 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 06/10/2016

Car has 77,000 miles on it and is about 5 1/2 years old. The car is shuddering at stops and stalling. Car has stalled 4 times in 2 weeks at major highway intersections and presents a safety hazard. Requires a torque converter replacement which is not covered under any existing recall or warranties.

48 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2010 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 11/01/2015

Vehicle will shudder and stall when coming to a stop most often in the uphill position, it will also stall when coming to a stop after braking hard. This problem is avoided if you place the car in neutral but that is the only way. Engine idle will drop drastically and the vehicle has a hard time reengaging into drive after coming to a complete stop. I assume it is the cvt transmission or the torque convertor.

49 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2011 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 03/05/2015

Car continues to stall when reducing speed. Occurs mostly at traffic lights and stop signs; however, has occurred when slowing for traffic. Car has completed all scheduled maintenance and oil changes as required. Initially told to service air flow sensor and have inspected for vacuum leak. Vehicle service did not resolve stalling. Service bulletin 16-90-13 shows Subaru knows the torque converter to be faulty on these vehicles, causing the vehicle to stall under these exact conditions. This is creating a safety concern on these vehicles for the potential to be rear ended due to stalling when attempting to slow vehicle. Safety recall should be issued and torque converter should be replaced by Subaru due to faulty design.

50 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2010 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 03/01/2015

When you suddenly brake, the car stalls and engine shuts off. You have to put car in park, and crank the car back on to proceed, which obviously is a safety issue whilst in traffic. This is a known issue according to numerous blogs and websites. This is an issue with a faulty torque converter in Subarus. I even went to the dealer which they admitted it is not a recall but a technical advisory, which due to the safety concern it should be a recall.

51 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 1997 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 10/10/2001

Crank seal leak is a fire risk. Oil drips along oil pan and onto y section of exhaust where it burns. This is a common problem with Subarus with 50k miles. Although torque converter bind is not directly a safety issue, it is too common among Subarus with > 50k miles.
