Car Stall Problems of Subaru Legacy - part 1

While driving, exhaust odor detected in cabin causing headaches/nausea and exhaust became much louder starting at roughly 185,000 miles. Discovered Subaru service program bulletin wuj-95 which identifies cracks forming in the bellows section of the front exhaust pipe and its replacement with an updated front exhaust. Contacted Subaru and requested it be covered under the wuj-95. This request was denied as my vehicle "already had the updated exhaust pipe". Purchased and installed the kit called-out in wuj-95 myself. Upon removal of the exhaust pipe, I was able to confirm visually that cracks had formed in the exact location identified in wuj-95. The "updated" exhaust pipe that my vehicle had failed. Contacted Subaru several more times requesting this be covered . Coverage was denied. The "updated" exhaust pipe is not a true fix for this safety issue.

Vehicle stutters and frequently stalls when coming to a stop. The more aggressive the braking, the likeliness of stalling becomes higher. The vehicle needs to be put into neutral to be restarted. This also occurs more frequently in colder temperatures. The older the vehicle the more obvious the issue becomes. Currently 99500 on a 2010 Legacy. The dealership has confirmed that the converter needs to be replaced, but Subaru USA is unwilling to offer support due to the vehicle being outside the �extended warranty�. The information originally disclosed by Subaru did not say that the vehicle may stall. This has now become a major safety concern which could leave individuals severely injured or dead if this were to occur at an unfortunate moment. Dealership estimated the repairs at about $3,028 plus tax.

Got my Subaru at a certified dealer and they did all the airbag recalls good 😁 and thank you but I been driving it to and from work no big deal 35 mile round trip but noticed it was hard starting like no fuel or spark so when it was due for inspection I told them to change the plugs at 59k miles they did and drove it for a month or two and notice a winding noise and shimmy and when stoped at a red light it almost stalled out light when very dim and came back on and I've notice over a week it's been loosing power like the tahoe I had that the torque converter was going so I called the nearest dealer and asked about the transmission and they looked at it and said it passed all of Subaru testing and just drive it and asked what about the shimmy when driving and shifting gears they said engine lope and just drive it till it shows a light or fails it's under warranty till 100k miles but I don't want to drive it if I'm in traffic and it stalls and cause a reck or engine blows up due to engine lope and asked about the engine lope what is causing it they can't tell me it now has 61k miles on it and a yard ornament because I don't want to cause an accident on the road.

My 2011 Subaru Legacy is experiencing shuddering and stalls when coming to a stop resulting in the engine shutting off. I can describe this condition similar to coming to a stop in a manual transmission equipped vehicle without depressing the clutch. It is seem similar to like the vehicle is stalling or cause it to stall.

Car initially began to stall every time the car would come to a rest on an incline, then began to stall while turning (most often while turning right at low speeds) and then additionally began stalling when shifting from drive to reverse to back into parking spaces. This progression occurred over the period of less than a month. I called dealership to have it serviced. Before I could get an appointment from the dealer, the engine began causing the car to make a bucking motion on the highway to the point I had to pull off and drive it under 10 miles an hour to a safe location off the road. Since the initial dealer couldn't get me in (due to servicing numerous airbag and wiper recalls) I went to a different dealer who diagnosed the problem as misfiring cylinders 1,2, and 3. The engine had have these cylinders re-machined, the engine was rebuilt, and the car given a tune-up. This made the bucking stop, but the stalling persisted- but was more intermittent. A month later I brought it back to the dealer who said the stalling was due to the computer not communicating with the engine properly- and they performed a "re-learn to system" and said the car tested as designed. It is still intermittently stalling on inclines and when shifting into reverse. Total repairs have amounted to over $4000 between the tow, initial engine/cylinder repair attempt, engine rebuild, and subsequent repairs. It seems to be unfixable- and I am not the only Subaru owner complaining of it. I have heard from Legacy and outback owners with similar stall issues (but none have reported the bucking issue that happened on 7/5/19.

When driving at a high speed on the highway and then coming to an abrupt stop the car stalled. The car is an automatic. Apparently Subaru distributed a bulletin noting that this was common in Legacy and outback models made before 2013 (see attached) and is due to a torque converter problem. This seems dangerous as it can happen while driving on the highway with other cars moving at high speeds. Apparently this is over $1500 to fix, but I believe Subaru should cover some if not all of the cost. The car is not under warranty and has 147k miles.

My Subaru has a stalling problem. It will stall at hard stops or when I roll to a stop. It can be very dangerous when going up a hill where you need to slow down or if someone stops hard in front of me. It shudders like it wants to stall many times throughout the day. Subaru need to look into this cause many people have this problem and it is very unsafe.

When coming to stop sign or sudden stops the car will stall. You have to be quick and restart car or your going to get hit, you lose all control. This has been happening since we bought the car in April of 2019.

Tl the contact owns a 2010 Subaru Legacy. When the contact purchased the used vehicle, she had it inspected by an independent mechanic. The mechanic did not find any failures at the time; however, the vehicle kept stalling when driving. An independent mechanic stated that the vehicle needed a new transmission and hardly had any fluids. In addition, there were a multitude of failures with the vehicle, including the brakes, engine, and transmission. The contact spoke with the federal trade commission to file a complaint with the dealer from where the vehicle was purchased (rad auto shop, 101 n main st, sharpsburg, PA 15215, (412) 782-2886). The contact was referred to her state attorney general's office. The contact stated that her bank would file a claim on her behalf if the dealer did not refund her money. The dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. The failure mileage was 141,000.

When braking, the car often stalls and all requires a shift into park, and a restart of the entire engine before being able to proceed. When it stalls, steering is also affected. This frequently happens on city streets, but also happens when pulling into parking spaces and when slowing for turning. This has been happening with increasing frequency.

Very routinely when coming to a stop from the car moving when you decrease your speed when stopping for a light, traffic, or anything that would require a quick stop, the car will stall out as your speed is less than 10-20 mph and you loose control of the steering, brakes. Ect. This is a huge safety issue and needs to be addressed by Subaru immediately. This can occur on any street, highway and will do this while turning as well. This happens daily in my commute and is a danger to myself and others. It occurs when coming to a stop from a moving position.

Car often shudders & stalls when coming to a stop on a city street also will sometime stall when going slow to turn into a parking space.

When car is coming up to a stop sign it stalls and dies on me and I have to put it in park and start it back up. I had a time where it idled like it was going to die and didn't but it does this 4 to 8 times a day. Not sure what is going on but I almost got hit by a semi truck due to it stalling. Please help this needs to be fixed it is not safe especially when I have small children in my car . I need answers.

Car stalls when braking abruptly. This has happened three times. It shudders and dies.

The dealer (my auto import center, 1860 e sternberg rd, muskegon, mi 49444, (231) 799-2886) stated that the part to repair the vehicle cost $2,900, but offered to cover 50% of the part and labor cost. The manufacturer stated that the vehicle was not covered by the extended warranty since it was 10,000 miles over the limit. The contact stated that she never received a letter informing her of the extended warranty. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 110,700.

The torque converter of my car is not shutting off properly, causing the vehicle to stall periodically. The car has stalled while I am in the middle of making a turn, causing the wheel to lock up, and it has stalled while I am on the highway. This car is no longer safe to drive, and the repairs cost $2,200. My car is over 100,000 miles so the warranty will no longer cover these repairs. I have attempted to contact Subaru via their website to address the issue, but have yet to get a response. For now, my car is at the Subaru dealership and I am forced to rely on friends and family for transportation. I know that this is an ongoing issue with the 2012 Subaru Legacy vehicles, and it is absolutely ridiculous that the company is not offering a recall on this part. I am being forced to jump through multiple hoops to attempt to get this issue resolved, and so far I have not been offered any option other than to pay for the repairs out of pocket.

Tl- the contact owns a 2010 Subaru Legacy. The contact stated that while the driver was driving and came to a stop the vehicle stalled without warning. The driver restarted the vehicle and was able to drive normal. In addition, the contact stated that each time the vehicle shifting down and come to a stop it would stalled. The failure recurred numerous times. The contact called ed reilly Subaru dealer, located at 150 manchester st, concord, nh 03301, (603) 225-0200, and informed the dealer of the failure, the technician advised the contact that it was the torque convertor and they new about the failure. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer and was not repaired due to the diagnostic and repair fees. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 120,000. The VIN was not available. Aw.

Tl the contact called on behalf of his daughter who owns a 2009 Subaru Legacy. On two separate occasions, while driving highway speeds, the vehicle stalled. The contact was able to restart the vehicle. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. A dealer was not contacted. The VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 19v297000 (electrical system). The manufacturer was contacted. The approximate failure mileage was 120,000.

Per service bulletin # 16-90-13, the car will stall when coming to an abrupt stop. Part of the time, the vehicle will stall when coming to a normal stop as well. This happened once while city driving when a light went from red to green as we were approaching. We were down to under 5 mph and went to accelerate again to continue with the flow of traffic. Before I could release the brake, the car stalled and almost caused us to get rear ended. So that along with the inconvenience and danger of dying at stops will push us into performing this costly repair ASAP. The stalling can occur sometimes at every stop, and sometimes it will not happen for multiple stops. The torque converter is a known issue, and is to be replaced with a more updated model with different internal components. I contacted Subaru and they informed me I was outside of my warranty so it was completely up to me.

The problem is with the torque converter failing and the dealership wants me to pay $2,100 which I'm not doing and it's an ongoing problem with Subarus with cvt transmissions which makes its stall when pressing on the brake when it happens to me every single day now ever since the dealership looked at it last.

Contact owns a 2012 Subaru Legacy 2. 5. While driving at lower speed and approaching a turning lane at a heavy traffic intersection from the highway during rush hour the vehicle vibrated and shuttered abnormally, then stalled with all early computer warning lights going off before engine cut. Owner able to restart vehicle, but cautiously taken to dealer to diagnose with safety concerns while driving. Dealership mechanic unable to diagnose over three hours later. Mechanic stated systems all checked out, but unable to say what the reason was even after test driving twice by different workers. Mileage just over 61,000. Multiple Subaru forums lists this issue with Legacy, outback, and other models (1998-current 2016) citing high safety concerns warranting further investigative review and please be escalated.

When making a hard break the rpm's will drop so low that the vehicle will begin to shudder and then eventually stall. This I find is dangerous because there have been times where I've been at an intersection and had to hard break and I have to turn my car off and turn it back on before I can move out of the way. There is a recall for my same year 2010 for the Subaru outback manual, I have the cvt transmission so I'm sure they differ but essentially described as the same issue. I notice it more at the beginning of my drives if I drive for over a half hour I don't recall experiencing the issue any longer. It's been progressively getting worse over the last few months. I read online that sound correct to the problem with a reflash some corrected the problem by replacing the torque converter and some a new transmission. I have been putting my car in neutral to keep the rpms from dropping out so low that the car stalls out.

Car sputters & stalls when braking.

Whenever the brake is pressed hard to a complete stop, the car stalls and all electrical shut off. It doesnt seem to happen when you brake very slow before coming to a full stop. But if you brake slowly and then pressed the pedal full, the problem will occur. This can cause panic and also delay on cars running behind the car. It appears this is similar problem reported under 10395739. I also found a number of similarly reported problems online with Subaru cars.

For the past 2 months my Subaru Legacy has been stalling and losing power when I roll to a stop and/or when suddenly braking. Almost got rear ended by semi truck on the freeway and multiple times at stop lights in foggy situations. Subaru dealership said if it was an annoyance I should bring it in. Almost dying in a Subaru with my daughters is more than an annoyance. Dealership has known about it but performed a throttle body service, which was futile. Online forums suggest a faulty torque coverter and a service#16-90-30. Qutoes for replacing it are around $2000. Subaru knows it is due to faulty design of torque converter. . . This should be recalled. I used to luve Subarus and this car, I am now forced to take a loss financially and buy a safer car. Completely unsafe.

Car stalls when slowing down or braking to stop. No error codes or engine light warning. Car starts right after but stalls again frequently. Checked all fluid levels ok. Happens with hot or cold weather.

My car stalls when I come to a stop. It is an automatic cvt car. He happens all the time. Could cause an accident when I stop and then accelerate.

Problems with electronic throttle control or throttle bodys causes the vehicle to hesitate for several seconds upon initial acceleration. This has nearly resulted in accidents on several occasions when merging or pulling out into traffic. Problem of vehicle stalling when stopping at a light started at the same time (related problem). Drives fine under all other conditions. Dealer unable to assist.

6 speed manual transmission. Vehicle stalls, and rough idles intermittently while at stop light or other traffic control. Vehicle also stalled while on highway twice disabling power steering, and power braking. Brought back to dealer and they were unable to replicate issue. Issue occurred again, brought back to dealer 2nd time same results. 3rd time issue was replicated while I was in vehicle with tech. Technician stated that they will address it. Left over weekend. Tuesday dealer notified me that the vehicle was experiencing a power draw after the window or electronic brake were used, and the factory advised that the computer would need to be "re-flashed" but currently, there is no re-flash program developed, and there is no time line as to when it would be. Contacted Subaru America cust. Serv. District manager test drove and was unable to replicate. So as far as the dealer and Subaru are concerned, there is no issue. Vehicle still stalls intermittently. Filed complaint with CT dvm lemon law, and now with NHTSA.

This problem has been occurring for a long time now. I am finally reporting this after giving up on Subaru and its service network. Car exhibits surge and dip in acceleration at constant throttle, especially at lower speeds. Taking foot off throttle also causes surge when gently applying the brakes; this happens when the transmission downshifts to a lower gear. Also, the change from 2nd-3rd gear is very abrupt; the engine rpms rise by 200 in between shifts and then slams into 3rd gear. It happens every time. Dealer either says that it cannot be reproduced, or that it is normal. Another problem with the car is that it almost stalls when starting off from standstill and in intelligent mode. These problems are not acceptable from a car that is certified pre-owned. This might be my first and last Subaru.

I started vehicle in driveway as usual. Put vehicle in reverse, slowly letting foot off brake, engine began to sputter and sounded like it was about to stall. Braked and put in park to let engine warm for a few more minutes. I proceeded to drive without incident.

Subaru Legacy gt wagon - turbo failure due to oil starvation at 51,000 miles. Oil always changed at 3,000 miles/ 3 months. Explanation from mechanic is that Subaru installed oil screen in line leading to turbo, but this is not checked or changed according to manufacturer maintenance recommendations. Over time, screen clogs and leads to oil starvation and turbo failure. Turbo replaced by Subaru under powertrain warranty. No remedy for screen which will eventually clog again.

Whne the car is cold, it hesitates and stalls when taking off from a stop sign or other stop. Dealer does not know how to fix. Fails every time the car is operated cold.
