Car had been parked for 2 1/2 days. On cold start it made a horrible noise, check engine light came on and car died. I towed it to an auto repair shop. They said noise was internal motor noise. I authorized r&r of the oil pan and the found the #3 rod bearing spun. This vehicle has never been abused nor neglected and I have service records showing every service done on time. All oil changes were done every 3500 miles. Also. . At 92k miles my car developed a head gasket leak. Subaru has a warranty extension for 99-2002 Subaru Legacy headgaskets up to 8 years or 100,000 miles. Subaru declined coverage on my vehicle due to VIN # being outside of VIN # group they had extended.

I am sure you have received other complaints regarding the 2. 5l engine in 1997 Subaru Legacy gt's. The head gaskets are very weak, which when they blow, can cause a loss of power due to a rush of coolant flowing into the system, which kills the engine. This problem is very widespread, and Subaru does not admit anything. However, in canada, Subaru was sued for this same issue. There are thousands of people out there that are experiencing erratic failure with these head gaskets, and there isn't even a TSB on them. Please, help us!.

Engine began leaking coolant at an accelerated level. Online research yielded a campaign for repairs that extends the warranty of the known issue. The wwp-99 campaign coverage was denied by the manufacturer.
Under warranty had three head gaskets on 2000 Legacy 2. 5l (38,000, 55,000, 75,600 miles respectively). At 97,000 mile spark plug blew out of #2 cyclinder. Subaru blamed me since I replaced the plugs at 65,000. I paid $1700 at lynnes Subaru in arpil to replace left side head with new one. At 99,500 mile I am seeing the coolant starting to drop in reservoir. Only 400 miles left on 100k head warranty for right side and 10k mile on warranty for new head. The car is sitting until I get it into dealer. Besides headgaskets, catalytic converter, rear wiper motor, door locks and under dash wiring have all failed. This is a lemon. Can I prosecute under the NJ lemon law? is there any other forum to get Subaru to repair or buy back vehcile?.
Car overheated randomly. Have replaced radiator, water pump, 3 thermostats, head gaskets, and had heads machined at shop. Still overheated and died frequently. Had it to mechanic multiple times. Each time they say it was fixed. Being towed back to repair shop today because it won't even start now.

Coolant leak. Dealer unsuccessfully attempted to seal. Dealer replaced one of two head gaskets($1328. 00). Dealer denied any recall. Found Subaru service program wwp-99 on internet, same model year, engine and problem. Dealer and Subaru are denying any responsibility saying car not included in VIN range.
My 2001 Legacy leaked antifreeze. . . Was recalled. . . The "additive" they required to be added was done. . . The head gasket was replaced at about 25,000 miles before warranty expired. . . Now, about 1 yr and 10,000 miles later, I am having the same problem and they are saying I have to have the same head gasket replaced!!! this does not sound right to me. . . Do I possibly have a warped block or head??? I think all the dealer is doing is just putting a "band-aid" on my problem.

Noticed the smell of coolant when exiting the car after driving. I investigated this and found a small coolant leak coming from the back of the left cylinder head. The car is a 2003 Subaru Legacy gt w/ the 2. 5l engine. I have owned the car since new,and had the first few services performed @ the dealer purchased, and even had a trans recall repair performed there as well. The car had around 65000 mi. On it when the leak was first noticed by me not the dealership, even though it is a known issue as told by a service rep when I questioned them on it. It took several visits to get info from them on this because they "didnt want to reveal too much info" to me,the consumer. Apparently if Subarus coolant additive was added before 100,000 mi. And documented @ a certified service center,Subaru would cover the bill for a new cylinder head gasket, if not then it would not be covered. My question is if the additive was so important for the head gasket to survive being run then why wasnt it added at the factory or dealer before sale, and whose job was it to tell the consumers that it needed to be added. The bill is around 1200$ and from my research and observations of vehicles w the same motor (I work in the auto body repair business) this happens to most fairly early in the engines life. I think that this needs to be addressed by Subaru the manufacturer, and result in a total recall and repair of this problem. They have already lost me as a customer, and actually the last time I tried contact w them theyre response was "we will remove you from our contact list".

Car overheated, took to dealership. Called next day and informed the head gasket was blown. After discussing, they said they had to replace both head gaskets. Knowing about cars, this seemed strange to me that both were blown at same time - it was at this time that dealership pointed out to me that Subaru is having problems with head gaskets and that this is not an ususual problem. Replacement cost was $2200.

Multiple overheating problems for weeks after coolant additive installed. Subaru can not fix it.
I received a letter from Subaru of America yesterday. It is asking that certain owners of Subaru autos (like my 2000 Legacy) have a stop leak put into the cooling system to avoid leaks in the head gasket. In the past there has been incidences where people had to have their head gaskets replaced on their Subaru autos. This type of quick fix can lead to damaage to the engine parts by partially clogging the cooling system, wearing out the water pump, etc. If a head gasket does blow later because the temporary seal did not work, the engine could sieaze up and there is a chance, especially at high speeds, the Subaru can cause a serious or fatal accident. Subaru should not be able to administer a temporary fix for vehicles still under warrantee, they should fix the problem and not just treat the symptoms.
No summary listed for above vehicle.
I was told that there was a water pump leaking problem. So they changed it about 5000 mils later I have an over heating problem. Now they tell me I might have a cracked head or a cracked head gasket. But they cant tell evan after the test. Now they want to go in.
A fuse had blown out five times, causing engine to stall . Also, affecting windows and fan.

Hot burning smell in the cabin and outside of car, several trips to the shop.
Smelling oil for about two months. Finally took vehicle in 6 weeks ago for routine maintenance & discovered oil leaks. Was told by the mechanic leaks camefrom crankshaft or camshaft gasket and cylinders. Contacted dealer replaced crankshaft gaskets/water pump. Another leak in the back of engine caused by separator cover gasket.
