The contact owns a 2015 Subaru Legacy. The contact stated that while the vehicle was at the dealer for service, he was informed that the front exhaust pipe was fractured. The dealer diagnosed that the front exhaust pipe needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the front exhaust pipe was previously replaced under Subaru campaign number: wuj-95 due to the failure; however, the failure persisted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 140,000.

Strong exhaust fume smell invades cabin while idle, everyday and it's getting stronger no leaks detected.
2015 Legacy 3. 6r purchased 12/18/14 two major safety issues: 1) snow / water entering engine compartment while driving and causing a burning smell inside cabin and exterior. 2) water leak inside cabin at driver foot well area. Engine burning smell: 1/7 notified dealer of burning smell which appeared to be coming from engine/under car and inside cabin while car was idling. Dealer reviewed and was unable to replicate. 2/23/15 returned to dealer again, once again unable to replicate 2/28/15 3255 miles - brought to another Subaru dealer; dealer confirmed smell in writing and cited due to "rustproof coating from factory on exhaust". 3/3/15 - driving in another snow storm, smelled burning again, parked and opened hood - discovered water / snow all over engine compartment; on top of battery and covering all electrical components; have pictures. There is evidence of water stains and rust corrosion all over engine compartment, on electrical wires and the plastic white fuse connectors are discolored. Salt stains underneath engine hood and all over engine body. Standing water underneath the batter cradle as well as snow. Seems worse on left side then right but both sides have water. Engine hood is flush with bumper - doesn't appear to be any fit issue, however the only weather strip is a small piece above the grill area and does not stretch across and over the lights. 3/3/15 contacted Subaru of America and dealer - no response - yet. ****this is a major safety mechanical concern. At no time should water ever enter the engine compartment*** 2) water leak in cabin 3/2/15 discovered water leak inside cabin - driver foot well area. Notified Subaru of american on 3/2 and dealer. Known issues documented online with Subaru crosstrek and prior Legacy model years.
The vehicles turbo failed and destroyed the engine. The turbo and engine were all factory original. I replaced the part that I thought was causing problems with the engine and turned the car on and black smoke came out off the exhaust. According to the mechanic shop I took it to the oil union bolts are the cause of the problem to starving oil to the turbo and then the turbo fails. I think it is unclear that these engines have a major flaw in them. Most people have these problems way before the 100,000 miles on the odometer mark. I would need a completely new engine for the vehicle. I did oil changes every 3000 miles and did the recommended services at each time or mileage intervals.

I have been experiencing a very powerful fuel smell emitting from the areas of the engine. When I pop the hood the smell is the strongest. The smell is of raw gasoline (not exhaust or anything of that sort) and permeates into the cabin and all around the vehicle. The odor emerges only on cold days, specifically temperatures that drop below 39 f. The odor grows more potent as the car runs and if I activate the heat blowers you and smell it even more. The odor even last long after the car is shut off, existing around the engine for hours after shut down.

To nhsta three turbos have failed within a 2 month span on a 2005 Subaru Legacy gt sedan. Leading up to each failure the vehicle was being driven consistently at ~60 mph for 15 to 20 miles. The consequence of these failures has been loss of power on the highway which could have caused a wreck (but luckily did not). To correct this failure the turbo was replaced by an independent mechanic under an extended warranty. It failed again the same day due to the nut holding the turbo together falling off. Subaru replaced that turbo but it failed again after 2 weeks. I took it to a Subaru dealership this time where they said it failed because a small mesh screen become blocked by sludge and would not honor their mechanical fault warranty. I paid to have it replaced but I have not yet picked up the vehicle since I cannot trust it not to break (nor will Subaru warranty the part if the screen becomes blocked again, this sludge could be caused by the initial turbo failure, since the broken turbos throw metal through the oil system. ) this is a safety issue instead of a maintenance issue because of the consistent failures under the same condition which is normal highway driving conditions. The failure rate for this specific Subaru vehicle is much greater than normal with an epa report (ref #gr08-054c epa # 3595) showing "unscreened warranty claims" (minimal failure rate?) of 4. 55% as of Sep 12, 2008. This rate is on average 3 times higher than other turbo vehicles produced by Subaru at the time. (incidently Mazda has just recalled their new 2010 turbo mazda3's due to turbo failure from periods of idle or limited acceleration due to oil pooling in the turbo, these are the circumstances under which the Subaru turbo's have failed).
The first time my oil return line cracked and leaked it started a small fire under the hood. This is because my dealer told me to keep driving and make a appt. A few days down the line. Line gets replaced and about 11 months later the same problem happens. Oil return line cracks oil dripping onto the hot exhaust and making tons of smoke. Line is replaced again. Two weeks later same problem same oil line and its cracked again. This is obviously a manufacturing defect among these parts and a design flaw as well.

The contact owns a 2007 Subaru Legacy. While driving 15 mph, oil leaked on the exhaust and caused a small engine fire. The dealer replaced the oil line. The failure mileage was 10,200 and current mileage was 12,500. Updated 12/12/07.
: the contact stated the odor of gasoline was noticed intermittently upon starting the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a local dealership where the problem could not be duplicated. The vehicle continued to smell of gasoline and the vehicle was taken back to the service dealer where it was discovered fluid was leaking from the steering area. The leak was repaired, but the odor of gasoline continued. The odor is strongest after the vehicle has been sitting for a period of two hours or more. The odor disappears after driving a hundred yards or more. The amount of fuel in the tank does not have any impact on the odor. The vehicle was returned to the dealer again, it was determined the vehicle was operating normally and the dealer only suggested making an adjustment to the brand of gasoline being used. Updated 03/03/06.
Purchased 2005 Subaru Legacy gt with automatic transmission several wks ago with about 5,000 miles on odo, sold to me as "new" was sales mgrs car. When accelerating hard on the highway, cabin fills with acrid sulpher smell. Can be duplicated. If this is residue it should have burned off by now, since the car was placed in service August 2004.
Subaru 1996 engine defect in which exhaust valve guides prematurely fail around 70-90000 miles, falling into the engine area and causing misfiring and other engine damage.

This appears to be a very common problem with this motor. Oil can leak so bad it will hit hot exhaust and possibly start a fire.

Front oil seal in motor failed causing oil leak onto exhaust dealer said is normal wear e/mailed manufacture with no response. Front oil seal should not be a normal maintaince item. Leked onto exhaust possible fire hazard, also caused water pump failure. Repair was on 7/22 e/mailed subrau 7/23 recived no response.
Failure of original exhaust system.
Crank seal leak is a fire risk. Oil drips along oil pan and onto y section of exhaust where it burns. This is a common problem with Subarus with 50k miles. Although torque converter bind is not directly a safety issue, it is too common among Subarus with > 50k miles.
Raw fuel vapors enter passenger compartment. Dlr has tried to fix with no success. Subaru has been aware of this problem for several months. Dlr found and replaced leaking fuel rails. This did not correct the problem. Passengers overcome by fumes. Could be cause of accidents, injuries or even deaths driver doses off due to fumes.
Front crank seal is leaking oil onto exhaust system. The seal that separates the block from the oil pump has failed several times, each time, a cloud of smoke rises from the exhaust as the oil is sprayed back onto it, on one occasion the seal completely dumped several quarts of oil onto the ground.
Consumer smells excess rubber smell, possible exhaust system problem.
