Subaru Legacy owners have reported 9 problems related to radiator (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Subaru Legacy based on all problems reported for the Legacy.
The car is just shy of 8 years old. The transmission failed causing the car to suddenly stop, shut off and lose power steering while traveling down the road. Currently the engine is leaking exhaust from the engine compartment that can be smelled in the passenger compartment. It is also leaking hot oil from the cylinder head onto the lower exhaust and leaking hot coolant from the radiator. The exhaust and fluid leaks occur when stationary or in motion.

Leaking coolant and replaced radiator, thermostat and still leaking and started to overhead. Found out it was head baskets and did research on recalls for this year make and model. Found out on forums that there were multiple problems with both types of engines that year the single and dual overhead cam engines and all around the same mileage, but only the single overhead cam engine had the recall. I feel there should be a recall on the dual overhead cam engine as well.

Before this - engine replaced with very few miles - Subaru claimed no warranty - insurance paid based on tiny leak in radiator - car just quit. Never knew of any leak - not water in garage floor ever. Then on 12/28/10 had heard loud knocking noise in front end. Subaru sent wrecker (2 hrs_ 1-way) to pick up car - replaced front end problems. Continued/constant problems with this vehicle - truly a lemon. I am 77 - have been stranded more than 2 x's recently - car just loses power - ck engine & cruise lights - also 10/9/12 dash lights on drove 6+ hours to service in new braunfels, TX. Nearest dealer is 2. 5 hrs away 1-way. Need dealers no one else will even look at Subaru. This is truly the Subaru from hell!!!!! limited income cannot buy another car but I should would if I could.

The contact owns a 2006 Subaru Legacy. While the vehicle was stopped, the contact noticed smoke coming from the hood of the vehicle. Once she pulled the vehicle over, she opened the hood and noticed flames coming from the radiator. The contact was able to extinguish the fire. The vehicle was towed to her local mechanic and repaired. There were no warning indicators prior to the failure. The vehicle was never diagnosed by the dealer. The current and failure mileages were 36,700.
My 98 Subaru Legacy outback 2. 5 liter, 144k miles was sporadically overheating while driving on the highway through a snow/rain storm. The temperature gauge would go up, and the cabin heater would start producing cool air. I pulled over and let it cool down, filled the radiator back up with water (it had overflowed) and drove slowly home. When I took it to the mechanic, he suggested when hearing the symptoms that it was a blown head gasket, and that this Subaru engine was notorious for this. He even suggested a class action suit. After he checked it out, it was indeed a blown head gasket. After some web research on car forums, I found several other people with exactly the same problem with this particular engine.

Consumer noticed that the temperature gauge was registering hot on the dashboard while driving. Consumer was able to maintain control of the vehicle, and drove it to the dealer. Mechanic determined that the head gasket blew out and needed replacement. . . . . . . It was necessary to tear down the engine and replace all the gaskets/hoses/radiator/water pump/thermostat, as well as the coolant and oil. From January 2004 to September 2004, Subaru replaced 13 head gaskets on outbacks, and vintages from 1996-1998, and a mileage from 60,000 miles-90,000 miles. This represented a serious manufacting defect, it should be addressed by the manufacturer with a recall notice.
Vehicle's head gasket blew out. The vehicle overheated and the windshield did not defrost properly. The found that the heater core was bad. The consumer requested reimbursement for the head gasket. The radiator was replaced.

Car has pulled to the right since purchase. Purchased vehicle late sept. , 1998. Ac did not work very well, but weather was cool and it was not a pressing issue. The following spring/summer, took in for repairs to dealer in evansville. Ac still worked intermittently. Accident 5/19/99 where I rear-ended a van at approx. 20 mph. , airbags did not deploy. Ac still only working intermittently. On 9/17/99, after driving the car approximately 25 miles at 65 mph, I noticed the temp gauge was above the "h" and pulled over. The car died and never restarted. Overheated to the extent that after engine died, smoke billowed out the exhaust/tail pipe and over 3 hours after the car was shut off, radiator fluid still boiled over when added. Dealer unable to provide explanation for overheating or ac problems. Subaru regional representative has refused to return my calls for questions about the repairs.
Vehicle has been looked at during a period of time and mechanic found several problems. Radiator and head gaskets were replaced. Oil was leaking from the motor, and the axle on the passenger side had gone bad.
