Tesla Model S owners have reported 17 problems related to navigational (global positioning system) gps (under the equipment category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Tesla Model S based on all problems reported for the Model S.
The navigation system keeps giving wrong directions due to an error in the gps signal, I had to use my phone for route frequently. This is distracting and dangerous, and can lead to fatal accidents.
When backing up, multiple systems failed at the same time including backup camera, backup sensor distance visuals, backup sensor audio alerts, writing data to flash drive, gps sensors. Tesla was unable to diagnose the sysfiles to identify the hardware issue behind the simultaneous failures because they are deleted after seven days. Scheduling a service appointment takes much longer than seven days. No one at Tesla can tell me why this happened. No one can assure me that it will not happen again. I hope this is not a widespread issue. I was not injured and my rear bumper only sustained minor damage. But what if someone had been hit because all these systems failed simultaneously?.

I had a failure on my main computer. The mcu failed and the screen would not turn on. Tesla replaced a chip in my mcu but it did not fix all of my issues. I have to reboot my computer 95% of the time I am driving. Here are the issues: 1) 3g/gps not activating. Leads to not being able to use gps navigation. 2) computer freezes. Usually while sleeping, computer does not wake up or the central screen does not respond leading to failures in many systems including: blinker, ac, radio, rear view for backing up, garage control, creep mode, etc. One time I left my computer in 'camp mode' so that it would keep cool on a hot day. While I was away from car, I checked on my mobile app to see the status of the car. The app could not connect to my car. When I came back, the computer had frozen up which meant that the ac was no longer working. This caused a unsafe level of temperature in my car of 100 degrees +. Luckily there was no dog or child in the car but I hate to think if there was. When I leave the car in 'dog mode' or 'camp mode', I expect it to do what it states it is going to do and keep my car cool. This could be very dangerous, especially on a hot day. In conclusion, even though Tesla did the fix for my mcu and my screen does turn on, it is not fixed 100% leading to constant reboots due to 3g failures and computer freezes. This happens almost every day.

While in motion or stationary, the touchscreen can become unresponsive or show significant lags which impact the use of gps, backup camera, climate controls essentially all controls that are accessed via the touchscreen. I have contacted Tesla service several times over the past two years and no resolution has been made. The vehicle is under warranty, but they won't replace the mcu because they say "this is to be expected. ".

Tesla Model S 2015 90d. I have a service appointment come November 30th 2020 for this but I have had multiple occurrences of the main panel and side panel display go completely crash and black screen on me. Disabling both the "autopilot" v1 feature in mid use on a highway going 60+ mph, gps and other important assistant information such as vehicle speed etc(because screens are black). Its a very jarring and dangerous experience going fast on the highway and having the car "crash" in such a way that just gas and breaking are all that are suddenly left working in an instance(especially when you have that auto pilot feature engaged on a turn). I strongly recommend NHTSA to continue their investigation towards this as there are likely serious flaws with the emmc system and software these early Model S cars released with. I am afraid Tesla is going to give me the run around and not handle the situation appropriately, which would generally be a consumer recall when events as dangerous as this occur. I would say these full system crashes have occurred at least 5+ times since I have owned the car in 2015 and it seems like a matter of time before a serious crash could be caused by this faulty engineering . Tesla currently is trying to do as much damage control around it offering to look into a replacement part but no guarantees its covered by their warranty. As a software engineer myself it feels very much like when hardware starts to go bad, like a system internals beginning to fail due to corrupt memory and storage. These early Tesla Model S'ES are a ticking time bomb to public roads(I say this as a Tesla fan, when working the cars are incredible to drive, when they dysfunction its a very serious problem because of the nature of these software driven vehicles their hardware/software has to be rock solid).

Central screen (media control unit - mcu) continues to shut down and restart which causes loss of air bag, climate (including DE-fogging), rear camera as well as media controls/gps. Tesla repair indicates that it is a defect that can only be fixed by upgrading to their new mcu2 at a large cost. Replacing with same system will not fix issue. This restarting/rebooting occurs when driving and when idle with no warning. Tesla claims it does not affect driving but it completely shuts down ability to charge, use climate control(including window clearing) and safety controls like airbags. This happens approximately 1x daily when driving car starting after Tesla installed something related to full self driving option.
Mcu completely died on my 2013 Tesla Model S. The reverse camera does not work. Signals. Hazards. Gps. Ac.
My main center display went blank. Failed to come back after multiple reboot attempts. Climate control, gps, suspension, backup camera, and most functionality lost. First noticed when stationary in my garage.

Touchscreen that controls dozens of vehicle operating features including ac, heat, gps, lights, access to mobile application, sunroof, etc. Went blank and would not reboot. Can can be driven, but not safely. This happened in July 2020. This is the second time, first was oct 2020 and was replaced by Tesla for no charge. This complaint is for July 2020 when it happened again. Only 32,000 miles on vehicle. Required to pay $87 diagnostic fee and $1,600 for a replacement. Known issue to Tesla due to a memory card failure as a result of writing log files to it beyond the known life of the card. Seems they replaced the unit in 2017 with one that they knew would fail. They call issue "end of life" but it seems like it was completely preventable. Took vehicle in on July 21, 2020. Part not available until Aug 10. No loaner offered, just an uber voucher which expired on July 26. Have seen many other complaints similar to this being reported with Teslas of my make and year.
Mcu - master control unit has failed (center touchscreen). Without it, the turn signals, hvac, radio, reverse camera, gps and remote connectivity do not function.
The center console display of my Tesla Model S has abruptly stopped working. I can no longer access the majority of the features of my vehicle, such as turning on a/c, accessing gps, controlling the sunroof, adjusting vehicle settings, adjusting my side mirrors, defogging the windshield, accessing the rearview camera, and any other setting that is controlled by the center display. This has made driving the car nearly impossible. Because of the low visibility of the rearview window, I heavily rely upon the rearview camera. Since center console display was off and hence no rearview camera, I ended up damaging my bumper into a low-profile object that otherwise would have been visible had the camera been enabled. I only drove my vehicle once and damaged it on the first drive with the center console off. I contacted Tesla to have this problem fixed, but was told I would need to pay approximately $1,500. 00 to replace the mcu with the exact same version. Further, this replacement would likely take a month to be fixed, rendering my vehicle effectively useless.
Touchscreen failed entirely. Touchscreen had been not operating well for 5y or more, but company would not take responsibility. Company reported it was due to firmware or software, but clear the mcu or touchscreen gradually lost more and more functionality. Was a safety issue with rear camera not engaging and voice commands for traffic or gps not working, climate control also intermittent. All functions worsened until final failure. Extended warrtanty was not offered. Communication was weak and intermittent, and its own safety issues. Now, required to pay entire replacement cost and working well.

The main screen of the car atarted leaking glue all over the car after some bubbles atarted to appear while the gps stopper randomly working, the screen would pixelated and restart by itself in the middle of a trip. The worst part is that it took more than a month to get it replaced because they had the mcu and screen in backorder until I finally had to pay $1200 for something that every single car of this year had gone through the same problem, not only me.
My September 2018 build Tesla Model S experiences the same screen failures (both the dash + media control unit) as the recalled versions, but mine falls outside of the recall period. The latest incident occurred while I was driving on a desolate highway traveling at 85 mph. I lose my speedometer as well as features such gps which occurred once in an unfamiliar area.

The screen on the car went blank as the mcu failed. While the car worked the audio, autopilot, radio, gps, navigation, turn signals stopped working. The car only had ~46,700 miles on it when the screen failed. Clearly a defect which should be covered by Tesla 2 months after the warranty expired in Dec 2019. This happened while the car was parked.
Sometime in 2015/16 my computer system (infotainment/mcu) stopped working correctly. It moved very slow, screen would load slowly, gps loaded even slower, car stopped recognizing the key was in the car and web connection stopped connecting or connected very slowly. I asked the service center to look at this during several routine or repair visits and I was always told it was a firmware issue. After they update the firmware, the problem continued. I complained about this during every visit to the service center and only recently realized that they never noted it as a 'customer complaint' in my service records. They simply listed that they looked at it as part of their routine courtesy check. This is misleading since I definitely complained and asked them to fix it. In recent years, the screen has started randomly going black and often (while driving or idle), the gps only occasionally works, the web never works (hasn't worked for more than 2 years). Now Tesla says my mcu is faulty and I have to pay $2500 for an upgrade. In the meantime, the computer system has indicated the 12v battery was bad (I paid to replace it but believe this was an mcu error now that my system rarely works correctly). I've reported this issue with the computer more than 6 or 7 times and no one was ever able to determine the cause or repair it. Only on a recent visit in 2019 was I told that the mcu will have to be replaced at my expense.
The 17" touchscreen monitor is black and refuses to boot up or reset, reboot. This does not allow major functions of the car su in as program my the driving features, communications, gps, climate control air-conditioning, rear view backing screen, turn signals or entertainment and other Tesla features including safety features. This occurs at all times, from the time the car is turned on.
