Toyota 4Runner owners have reported 758 problems related to body (under the structure category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Toyota 4Runner based on all problems reported for the 4Runner.
-the frame is rotted out - if the frame were to break, which my mechanic I saying is very possible, a massive incident could occur - it has been confirmed by an independent service center - it has not been inspected by the manufacturer but is an astonishingly common issue Toyota is very aware of that they continue to ignore. - there were not indicators notifying me of the issue. I wanted to replace my suspension and the mechanic advised not doing so because of the rot.

The frame is damaged from excessive corrosion. The rear cross member that supports the trailer hitch and rear bumper is almost non-existent, which could result in the loss of the trailer being towed, and it will reduce the truck's rear impact resistance. The front right lower control arm has a 2'" x 3/8" lateral hole from corrosion, which could result in a catastrophic failure of the right front suspension system. The longitudinal frame members are compromised by corrosion which has penetrated through the steel in various locations. The front cross-frame member that supports the radiator is severely corroded. The frame to body mounts are showing signs of excessive corrosion which could result in the separation of the the body from the frame in an accident.
The undercarriage is full of rust that the repair shop will not test drive or fix due to the issue. No warnings.
Extensive rust through out frame, resulting in holes in structural members. Leaving frame in a weak and vulnerable state.

Frame on 2005 Toyota 4runner has excessive rust due to Toyota’s negligence on frame production. I can make it available if needed. My safety is 100% compromised, had my mechanic not have told me of the issue, I would have kept driving the vehicle and the suspension could have detached from the frame at any point. The problem has been confirmed by my independent service center south lake automotive. It has not been inspected by police, manufacturer or other. There was no warning prior to the failure. Had I not had it pointed out as an issue, I would never have known it was an issue.

The frame is showing significant rust damage throughout the frame. A hole was punctured in the passenger side while using the factory bottle jack. This could have ended badly if someone was underneath when this happened. Furthermore there is deterioration on the front and rear sections that are questionable as to their integrity and resilience in the event of a crash. It is generally accepted by other owners of this generation that lack of adequete drainage throughout the frame has led to water pooling inside and creating excessive rust issues from the inside out.
My frame has rotted through, causing the rear bump stops to fall off, putting excessive wear on both frame and suspension components. In parts of the frame, it has rotted all the way around and caused a loss in structural integrity. Worst of all, there is a hole near the rear most strap holding the gas tank to the chassis, which is a risk to not only me and my pregnant wife but others driving on the road around me if it where to fall off. Looking at the body, there is no rust or corrosion. The same goes for the engine bay, the rust is entirely located on the frame. Mechanically, the vehicle is in excellent shape. It has now got to the point it will no longer pass a nys inspection.
The truck frame is rusting and making the vehicle unsafe prematurely. My vehicle only has 78 thousand miles and likely needs the frame replaced like many other Toyota vehicle because of the lack of corrosion protection.
We took our 2004 4runner for annual vehicle inspection and the service provider told us the vehicle would not pass safety inspection due to the excessive rusting on the steel frame and the suspension of the vehicle. Welding and patchwork will not fix this issue. My husband depends on this vehicle to work. The attached pictures give a small window into the extent of the damage. There is no current recall for this vehicle and year, but similar Toyota trucks from the same time frame have been recalled for the same exact issue. The entire frame needs to be replaced or worst case scenario, the vehicle is no longer usable. Toyota needs to remedy this issue for their loyal customers immediately.
Excessive frame rust causing difficulty to keep vehicle on the road. No warning lamps, I noticed the rust starting years ago, now the rust is so bad that the frame is rusted through causing difficulty steering and loud crunch noises. I contacted Toyota consumer affairs explaining the rust concern and asked if I needed to take the vehicle to a dealership for inspection, they said it wasn’t necessary (sounds like they don’t want to admit the existence of a possible manufacturing defect). The vehicle is available for inspection. I feel like I would be doing a disservice to society if I continue to drive this vehicle on public roads due to the danger of injuring a pedestrian or another motorist.
The body frame is the problem, it has rust all around, the radiator supports are all rusted out almost hanging, front side of the frame and rear side are clearly rusted. Radiator could fall any time. The problem was confirmed by auto shop and inspection shop (independent service center). Vehicle has not been inspected by police or insurance representatives. There were no warning lights or symptoms prior to frame failure, for now.
The frame of my 2004 Toyota 4runner, which is manufactured by dana holding corporation, is the primary support structure of my vehicle, to which every piece is attached. It is the main protection against injury in a car accident. The excessive rust corrosion of the frame on my Toyota 4runner greatly hinders the safety, crash-worthiness, and stability of my automobile, as transmission mounts, essential suspension components, and engine mounts are attached to it. Consequently, as it becomes affected by rust, it is significantly more prone to failing to protect me, the driver, in a car accident, and, furthermore, it can also cause serious accidents in and of itself. Depending on the gravity of the impact, not only myself but my passengers (my young children) can experience a wide range of injuries and even death. Because the excessive rusting of the undercarriage of my Toyota 4runners can cause plenty of vehicle components to fail, there can be multiple causes for an accident. The following are the most common injuries people sustain after a car accident: traumatic brain injuries severe whiplash fractured bones lacerations spinal cord damages paralysis loss of limbs permanent scarring concussions internal bleeding head injuries face injuries compound fractures soft tissue damage back injuries dislocated bones knee injuries shoulder injuries herniated disc psychological injuries unlike in the case of other models of your vehicles, Toyota motor corporation refused to address the problem of 4runners. Interestingly, your company faced a previous lawsuit in 2016 concerning the same rusting problem in the tacomas, sequoias, and tundras, and it was settled for $3. 4 billion in 2020. Nonetheless, your company did not admit it manufactured defective vehicles. According to documentation, Toyota motor corporation had been aware of the issue of premature rusting of the undercarriage of their 4runners for a long time but continued to manufacture and sell defective vehicles.
I own a 2010 Toyota 4runner VIN # [xxx]. I bought the vehicle late last year and found that the vehicle paint was peeling. I took my 4runner to the one and only dealer here in laredo, texas. They told me to take it to their company body shop. The body shop looked at my 4runner, took pictures and submitted everything to Toyota. This was late November or early December 2021. I called the body shop back in January. The body shop manager told me it had been approved to paint all the metal panels on the truck, but that I would have to wait until may of 2022. In may of 2022 I physically went back to ask the body shop manager about the truck getting painted. He said that it would not be painted until August, but that if I did not want to wait I could “take it somewhere else”. After waiting all of this time I did not want to start all over again somewhere else, so I told him that I would leave it there. Sometime in late June or early July 2022 I physically went to check with the to see if my truck could be painted, and the body shop manager told me that he did not know when but I was the "fourth one in line". I did not want to lose all my “wait time” and have to start all over again. I am very concerned that my 2010 4runner will not get the paint job that Toyota already knows it needs before the expiration date of December 11, 2022. I have reached out to Toyota brand engagement center and have spoken to them to exhaustion about the fact that it appears that my truck will not get painted (case# [xxx]). Toyota refuses to provide me with documentation that the claim for paint was submitted and approved (documentation I can use to protect myself should the expiration date come and go without getting painted). Toyota also refuses to extend the expiration date of the paint program to allow for paint job approvals that have not been completed. I have tried to make a claim on my own insurance which was subsequently denied. They said to contact Toyota. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5.

The blizzard pearl paint on my Toyota 4runner is peeling in large patches, exposing the undercoat and compromising the vehicle’s integrity. Toyota issued a customer support program (csp) acknowledging this as a known defect affecting blizzard pearl paint, but I never received the notification. As a result, I missed the deadline to have the issue corrected, and Toyota has refused to assist. This widespread issue impacts resale value and could potentially lead to rust or corrosion. There should not be a time limit on addressing a manufacturing defect of this nature. Toyota should be held accountable for providing a lasting remedy, especially when customers like me were unaware of the csp timeline.

The frame rusted and is available for inspection. My daughter was driving our 2000 Toyota 4runner sr5 which I purchased new in 2000 when she noticed the truck started to wobble when she hit small bumps. I drove it to the garage the next day which is 2 miles from my house. It was doing the same for me. My mechanic went to put it up on the lift, he noticed that the frame rusted out. There was nothing he can do at this point. There are many complaints of the same issues with the 2000 Toyota 4runners with the frames rusting out. If she was driving on the highway, this could have been a lot worse and possibly someone seriously injured or death. There were no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms of the problem prior to the frame rusting out. The only one to inspect it was my mechanic.

The body is excessively rusted through. Other vehicles this age or older do not have any where near the amount of excessive rust and holes. Parts have fallen off. Anytime the shop has to work on the truck, there is a pile of rust under it. Broken off rust poses a hazard to owner and others on the road as debris. Known issue on an uncoated frame.
Frame of the vehicle is rusting from the inside out. Upon inspection, holes in the frame are found, with many more hidden from sight. This is a disaster waiting to happen. This puts the driver and anyone else on the road at extreme risk if the frame breaks while driving. This problem is well documented with Toyota, and they have previously replaced tacoma, sequoia, and tundra frames, but not 4runners. Everyone is at risk with these frames, even if it does not appear so. My frame looked solid until I began hitting it with a hammer and screwdriver and breaking away very weak spots of metal.
My 4runner was purchased from a dealership and serviced there for rust related problems several times but was never told I had a serious rust problem. The problem is the frame has prematurely rusted and now the car is unsafe to drive due to the control arm rusting off the frame.

Extreme rusting on the frame undercarriage of the vehicle. Our mechanic found it today - said it must have been rusting for years & that this is a common problem with 03 - 05 Toyota 4runners.
So much rust has developed the frame is literally giving out. Toyota admitted to a rust issue- it’s now a safety issue with this generation of 4runner. They did a recall on the same frame for tacoma but not 4runner.
The chassis is completely rusted/rotten, 1" holes throughout the chassis and was told that it won't pass inspection.
Unaware of frame rusting issues to vehicle. . Observed rust through carpet on driver side. Upon research safety is a concern. Due to high volume of this type of issuing occurring a safety recall should be issued. It was not verbalized at time of purchase the make and model of vehicle have these type of issues. Especially, when this issues had been occurring prior to purchase of this vehicle.
Noticed the frame on the passenger side of the vehicle is rusting and I’m concerned about a safety issue. I know there was a rust-related class action on earlier model Toyota’s. The rust is most prevalent on the solder joints, which has me concerned about driving safety.

I took my vehicle into the Toyota dealer after mechanic told my my frame was rusting. The dealership confirm the frame is rusted. The frame of the vehicle should not be rusting out.
The frame of the car has been rusting at a significant rate in the last 4 years. Mechanic identified major rust issues that would make the vehicle not safe in case of an accident.
Vehicle failed inspection due to rust on the frame. Bought vehicle because it is supposedly ruggedly built and for the frame to rust out when the vehicle has 103k miles and not driven off-road for more than a few times since we owned it is ridiculous. Dealer quoted $11k for the frame alone, not including labor. The fact this vehicle shares the platform with the tacoma which was recalled for frame does not make sense. Vehicle was inspected last year (virginia requires annual safety inspections), so given the amount of rust discovered makes me doubt whether or not the Toyota dealership did a thorough job inspecting the vehicle last year. We don't drive the vehicle that much so it doesn't make sense that it would rust som significantly.
I own a 2005 Toyota four runner. The frame under the truck is completely rusted out everywhere. The car started swaying and I felt as though my vehicle was going to go out from under me. It felt like it was collapsing or melting underneath. This is my family vehicle. It was a dangerous situation and my entire family was in the vehicle. My spouse a children. I took it to a independent shop. The mechanic said that the frame had rusted out under the Toyota. He told me to park it and not drive it because it was about to split apart. He said that we were very lucky and just moments from a catastrophe. He also told me that their had already been a recall and replacement of the malfunctioning frames on Toyota sequoia, tacoma and tundra. In his professional option he thought Toyota should do the same type recall for the rusted out frame problem on the four runner. You are the first and only person I have reported this to. I will wait for your response and next steps: [xxx] cell number [xxx] home number [xxx] [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
The contact owns a 2019 Toyota 4runner. The contact stated that he noticed corrosion underneath the vehicle and on the lug nuts. The contact took the vehicle to the local dealer who was unable to locate any failure on the vehicle. The contact took the vehicle to second local dealer, clearwater Toyota (21799 us hwy 19 n, clearwater, FL 33765: (800) 667-9051) and the vehicle was diagnosed with needing multiple unknown components and serial bolts to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired but was pending repairs. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 19,000.

The frame on my 4runner is rusting through in multiple locations. The rear of the frame has already failed and a trailer I was pulling dragged on the road heavily as it failed. Definitely at risk of caving in long before the engine or transmitoo fails.
I took my car in for routine maintenance and they pointed out rust on the frame and suggested it was more than it should have and could cause a safety hazard.
I have two 2003 Toyotas, a tundra and 4runner. The 4runners frame is rusting out everywhere including the welds. My mechanic said it was getting to the point that it’s dangerous to drive and if it was in a wreck the frame would likely fail under the stress. My tundra frame from the same year is immaculate. I believe the are similar frames. This is obviously a defect in the production based on my readings and is very common. The investigation was opened in 2018 and its now 2022, when will this get addressed!.
I have a 2005 4runner with significantly rusted out frame that makes me worried about safety of driving it. I feel the amount of corrosion present is way beyond what I would expect for that year of vehicle.
Rusted frame and under carriage is rusting other parts of the vehicle, very dangerous!.
The frame is rusted completely throughout. Very dangerous!.
Vehicle has a rust frame which causes a dangerous.
