The rear hatch door handle turned into a melted rubber/plastic mess. Our hands are covered with black melted rubber type material whenever we try to open the rear hatch. After online research, I see there are allot of other Toyota 4 runners with the same problem. The part is called, switch assembly, back part #84840-35010. No doubt that the part is faulty.

The pad (located on the hatchback latch) where you place your hand to press down to open the hatchback has melted. It is difficult to open the hatchback as the rubber has melted & the button no longer releases properly. When I called don mcgill Toyota in houston, TX, they explained this is not a recall item & it would cost approximately $350 to repair since it includes replacing the entire button & electrical parts associated with the hatchback. This is a safety issue since I cannot open the hatchback properly. I believe this is a faulty hatchback handle which Toyota should repair at no charge. The parts that were originally used on this handle are faulty.
Took 2000 4runner in to get muffler replaced. They discovered extensive frame rot/corrosion where the rear suspension trailing arm mount ties into the frame. The welded seam of the box tubing has rusted out. They wanted to let us know, because they feel the vehicle is unsafe to drive. And, they suggested we contact Toyota to see if there was a recall or if sub-par metal was used, because the frame shouldn't be in such a terrible condition for a vehicle its age. The rest of the vehicle is in very good shape. There is no recall for the 2000 4runner, although there are recalls for similar problems on other Toyota vehicles. We do not feel comfortable driving the car, knowing that the structure is compromised. And, we certainly can't sell the vehicle in this condition, knowing that it is a safety hazard.
1998 Toyota 4runner sr5. The read differential housing has rusted out so bad that it has to be replaced. Multiple mechanics have stated they've never seen such a thing. No accidents or anything that could have added to the deterioration of this. This 4runner has never gone off road and 90% of is highway miles.
2000 4runner limited rusting on body with 66,000 miles. Frame and underside also rusting. Live in utah, they use salt on the roads.
Serious corrosion on rear differential casing at below fill bolt, leaking fluids. Dealer unable to do anything because part is not a cover as in most vehicles. Dealer only solution is to replace entire rear differential with all parts. This situation presents a serious threat to life as these components are severely and unusually rusted.

2005 Toyota 4 runner sr 5 spare tire bracket/ holder severely prematurely rusted. Dealer unable to remove spare tire. Lubricant applied by dealer to no avail. Bracket/holder defect makes spare tire unavailable for use and can lead to bracket/holder failure. Dealer unable to remedy leaving vehicle owner with no spare and potential for catastrophic event while vehicle in use.
I wanted to report this issue because it was unsafe and I was lucky I wasn't pulling my boat or traveling at high speeds when the failure occurred. Basically the frame for my 4runner rusted all the way through. One brace that is welded to the frame to stabilize the rear of the vehicle broke off the frame on one side. The other side is holding on by a string. There are holes in the frame with pieces missing from rusting out. The frame could in my opinion break in half near the rear of the truck. This seems similar or worse than what I read about the tacoma trucks. I brought it to the Toyota dealership and that was what the guys said there. The words directly from the service guys were - this is worse than any of the tacoma's they have seen. They had the regional Toyota rep take pictures and run a report and said they would get back in touch with me soon. That was on 9/9/09. No word back yet. Right now there is no recall on this vehicle that I know about so I wanted to make sure it was reported to you. This could have been a life threatening situation for me and multiple others on the road. They advised the frame was not safe to drive or tow any items and not to have more than two people in the vehicle at one time. The advised to get the frame welded by a welding company.
The back, trunk handle switch consists of a black, rubber type of material that melts every summer. I live in texas so summers can get extremely hot. So, it has melted/gotten hot to the point where it almost burned me and my husband's fingers. Additionally, it will leave black stains on our fingers regardless of the weather. This is not only an inconvenience but also a hazard. I'm currently trying to get it fixed at the dealership. However, I was told that the part that would replace it is the same material. So, I'm writing this to hopefully get a response from Toyota to replace these handles with another type of material. I've researched online and have found that it is not only with 4runners that this happens on but also siennas. We should not have to experience this with any vehicles we purchase regardless of where we live. Toyota should do something about this issue and not expect customers to just fix it on their own, not to mention replace it with the same switch that we had issues on to begin with.
No crash or injury, but 1997 Toyota 4runner differential is completely rusted through and leaks oil through numerous pinholes. It can't be patched and replacement is in the $1500 range. I can't take the vehicle on trips. I have found many instances of people complaining about this on the web - it seems to be a common problem.
The gas-filled struts that holds up the hood experienced premature failure. Once the hood is opened, the hood would begin slowing coming down and the pace picks up. The hood would slam shut violently and can potential cause injury to someone who is working on the engine.
2007 Toyota 4 runner with bad ground clearance. Consumer states that the vehicle scrapes the ground. Toyota reps and service reps keep telling her that ground clearance is measured different ways. The consumer stated she wanted a vehicle with high ground clearance. The dealer told her the vehicle had 9. 1 inches of ground clearance, but later the consumer discovered that wasn't true.
The contact owns a 2001 Toyota 4runner. The contact notice that the front and rear bumpers were covered with rust in March 2007. He took the vehicle to the dealership and the dealer told him that the road salt caused the bumper to rust. He called the manufacturer and filed a complaint with a representative. The vehicle had not been repaired at the time of the complaint. The current mileage was approximately 66,000. The failure mileage was approximately 40,000. Updated 04/12/10.
In 2006 of sept, I noticed a little hairline on my dashboard and as years go by up to this year 1 sept 2013 that hairline develop to a crack. This car is garage keep, windows are crack open for air circulation and a sun visor cover for windshield and not much driven, actual mileage is 50600 as of today, 1 sept 2013. I am just scared that the airbag might deploy if a sudden stop or because of the crack becoming wider.
Salvaged cars and cars that were involved in accidents are being passed off as clean preowned safe cars. The carfax states one thing but the mechanics are finding the lies and the attempted cover ups. Major world located at 43-40 northern blvd. Long island city NY. Showed me a beautiful carfax that did not tell the truth. I found out later after I paid a mobile mechanic 191. 00 to check the car out. The manager admitted to the mechanic that the car was a salvage car and was in an accident. If I knew anything about an accident, I would have automatically passed this SUV (2000 Toyota 4-runner) up. I would not have hired a mechanic. I am on disability and live on a fixed income. I passed up my ambulette service at their suggestion to wait for the mechanics arrival. They promised to pay my cab fare home. They lied. Something needs to be done about this dealership. I am out of $201. 00 because of their lies. How many people are being ripped off even worse than me. At least I had the common sense to get the car checked out before buying. Most folks don't. I learned a valuable lesson. Stay away from major world auto.
I purchased a 2004 Toyota highlander Jan. 2004 and drove it for two weeks before the weather permitted me to drive it with the windows down. I first noticed a excessive harmonic drumming noise when I opened the sun roof. I tried the other windows and the noise became unbearable to the point of causing extreme pain to the ear drums. The back windows being the worst. This problem was not disclosed at the time of purchase . I found out later that Toyota has known about this for some time.
While traveling on the highway with the driver and passenger's side windows down, the was a vibration coming from the rear of the vehicle. The vehicle experienced wind turbulence failures when driven 30 mph with all the windows closed, then suddenly the rear passenger window was opened and a loud sound occurred. This caused ear damages and dizziness to the driver and passengers.
