Toyota 4Runner owners have reported 6 problems related to tailgate (under the structure category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Toyota 4Runner based on all problems reported for the 4Runner.
The vehicle has excessive frame rust, covering 100% of lower frame, bumper to bumper. It has at least 2 holes, and is weak in several areas of frame. It failed inspection due to this. Only 133k miles on vehicle. Well maintained. Finally, tailgate door is significantly rusted above window, but at least this isn't a safety problem.

The tailgate of the SUV opens it while driving. The tailgate clothing latch sounds as if it has closed, but has not. This results in the tail gate opening up while driving. This began after having a repair on the back window system, that was a recall from Toyota. Also, there's no protection from the edge of the tailgate rusting. I've been told this is in every Toyota 4runner from 2004. This has been a problem for many years for me, but I did not know that there was a way to report it.

In September 2012 I noticed paint blistering on the tailgate of my 4runner. I now (8/13) have rust through originating from the inside middle of the tail gate. I took the truck to my local body shop and was told that this was a common problem with the 06 4runner. It was caused by a sound deafening material on the inside of the gate. "the material gets wet and holds the moisture causing body rot". This shop has repaired other 4runners with this problem. I also own a 1994 isuzu trooper with no body rust that sits next to it in my driveway. I was told by the Toyota rep (oakdale Toyota in NY) that it was out of warranty and they could not help me. I also have extensive rust on the undercarriage. The truck has never been off road before.

The tailgate latch is made from some rubber component. It has melted into mush. This makes it difficult to open back hatch door. It also has made a mess on paint on tail gate.

Loss of auto transmission fluid resulting in failure of transmission, possibly due to lack of care in verifying sufficient fluid supplied at point of sale. Owner points out that filler neck very small and next to imposible to re-insert dipstick, making re-filling a severe chore and encouraging whoever responsible to avoid checking that sufficient fluid has nbeen provided.
