Severe frame rust on 2004 4runner sr5 sport. Suspension rust, steering components rust. Holes in vehicle frame due to rust. I went to two mechanics that told me that this rust was beyond reasonable for normal rust on frame, they both stated it may become dangerous and to contact Toyota directly. The vehicle is becoming dangerous to drive due to possibly of failing components and or frame.

Frame has sever rust-through and corrosion on the passenger side in front of the rear trailing link mount and behind the front control arm mount. Vehicle is driven in an environment where road salt is used in the winter, but this is excessive compared to other older vehicles. Vehicle is washed regularly in the winter.
Frame is rusted thru on both front sides where the control arms attach.

I recently bought a used 2004 4runner and when I inspected the frame there was rust everywhere. Not only surface rust but actual holes in the frame from it. Also the steering assembly is completely rusted out. I'm not the only 4runner owner who has experienced these issues. If you do a quick online search for 4runner frame there are many results detailing this issue. As I use this vehicle for commuting to and from work I am concerned about its structural integrity. It only has 70000 miles on it and it's completely unacceptable that Toyota has not issued a recall for this problem as they did with other models (tacoma, tundra, sequoia).
Vehicle frame is severely rusted and rotted to the point where there are holes in the frame itself making it extremely unsafe to drive. Other Toyota trucks around the same year have been recalled with similar frame issues, does not make any sense why Toyota has not recalled the 2003 4runner frames yet. Vehicle is over 205,000 miles and would probably run another 200k if not for the frame which makes this car almost undrive-able. Frame to be replaced ASAP.

I am the original owner of a 2006 Toyota 4runner. The car is kept in a garage and is driven infrequently. Currently there's about 76k miles on it. I recently took it in for a maine state safety inspection and it would not pass due to excessive rust on the frame. There's at least one hole big enough to put your finger through, and there's rust flaking off the rest of the frame. I've owned other cars for longer than this with many more miles put on them, the rust on this frame is beyond what anyone would expect, and it's a severe safety hazard. I don't feel comfortable driving the car anymore, and I'm not sure if it can be patched or not. Toyota has a known problem with the frames on other vehicles and this one is no different.

My 2006 4runner's frame rusted so badly that the rear passenger side control arm detatched completely.
Vehicle has premature excessive rust of the frame and associated components and should have been included in the same recall my 05 sequoia (as well as tacomas and tundras) of the same era since all were manufactured with the same process that lacked adequate application of rust protection/coating. Many others on here as well as online on other sites also are reporting this generation of 4runner to have rusting. I have rusted motor mounts that cause motor vibration, rusted brackets holding my gas tank to the frame, I have had to replace all transmission lines due to rust that left me stranded while moving across the country. I have had to do replace several rusted parts like cv axels, wheel barrings, and possibly rusted steering box leak/rack and pinion (conflicting info from2 mechanics so undetermined). I purchased this in 2014 and just paid it off and need help as it should have lasted me more than 7 yrs and should not have had this kind of rust in yrs 7-11 after being made! it has low miles and should have lasted many years to come. Everything else is in excellent condition but this frame issue they excluded this model from needs to be extended for 4runners in the same generations of the recall mentioned above. This is leaving many drivers who paid the extra pricetag to have a Toyota left with a finacial loss of purchase as well as loss of use of a vehicle. Please look at all the complaints. Some are mislabeled on this site but descriptions show it is a frame issue that causes many secondary issues/related repairs. I have taken excellent care of this vehicle and just out a lot more money into it at the dealership with repairs since no one said it was rusted like this. After moving, I have had 3 non-dealership mechanics tell me it is bad. Please contact me with an update.

Vehicle started handling poorly. I had recently replaced the rear shocks and thought I needed an alignment done. Brought it to my mechanic who pointed out that my rear upper control arm brakcet on the passenger had rotted and broken, causing the squirrely handling. Shortly after, while driving home from work on the highway at ~70mph, I heard a clunk and the tail end of the truck started jumping/swerving. Took back roads home and assessed the problem. Lo and behold my driver's side upper control arm bracket encountered the same fate. Rotted and broken. My vehicle's first owner was in minnesota but since then it has been in texas where there is no salt on the roads. I've done what I can to seal and prevent further rust on the frame after purchase and yet this still happens? my truck is no longer drive-able as it's extremely unsafe to have my rear axle disconnected from the frame. So until I can manage to 1) find someone willing to weld my frame 2) pay for such a service I am without a vehicle. . . I paid $2000 for this car less than a year ago with only 170k miles on it.

Our 2004 4runner was inspected yesterday (virginia requires annual inspections), and failed due to rust holes in the frame. We have a photo of the holes. This seems odd to us, because the body is rust free and we live in a southern state where there is not a lot of road salt. Virginia does not allow any modifications to frames. I'm not sure whether this can be repaired. We've maintained the car in tip top shape and are very disappointed in Toyota. The car is registered in my wife's name, [xxx]. Redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
I took my 2003 Toyota 4runner into my local mechanic to do my annual state safety inspection and the mechanic informed me the frame was too rusted to pass inspection. Furthermore, he said that the rust was so severe it had separated the suspension from the frame. He told me it was the worst frame rust he had ever seen and that the cars frame looked like it was 20 years older then it was. It was totally rusted through in several spots. I called Toyota to see if they would work with me to fix this issue and they offered no help. All the other cars built on this frame have been recalled, I'm not sure why this one hasn't been.
I have a 2003 Toyota 4runner, that the frame is severely rusting. It has been garage kept and/or carport kept the entire duration of owning the vehicle. It was bought new and only one owner. When you turn right it makes a scratching sound. . From other complaints, I can see this is a common issue associated with the rusted frame.
2005 4runner in really good shape except for frame rust. This car would easily have gone another 100k with a strong drivetrain and interior in great shape. Was brought in to dealer for maintenance and when the tech put it on the lift he saw the rust damage. Called and explained the issue and suggested this was not safe for the road. This could have been a catastrophic accident if by chance it was not at the dealer. Rust is serious enough to have frame break and loss of control of vehicle. So I go from a reliable great vehicle to a piece of junk that can't be driven. This issue should definitely be covered and repair by Toyota, as Toyota is famous for rust issues!!! there's no question the frame was not coated properly. Rust this severe for a 2005 year car is not acceptable. Toyota should stand behind their product and fix this car.
While driving the vehicle and after turning onto a state highway it suddenly swerved badly and the rear end began swaying back and forth making it uncontrollable. I stopped the car immediately. It was discovered that the frame had rusted so badly it became separated from the rear axle. I had to tow it home on a flatbed trailer.
The rust on the frame of this vehicle is unlike anything I've seen in comparison to it's age. I work on vehicles frequently and have not seen anything like this in a modern age vehicle, and vehicles that are over 40 years old that I own or work on don't have rust that is remotely this bad. Upon further investigation, I found the entire weld line of the frame rails to be corroded through in an approximately 28" section. With further investigation, the entire bottom section of that rail was rusted out to be extremely thin and separated at the seam, entirely compromising the integrity of the frame rail. 2 of the body mounts are also rusted out as well as some of the suspension mount components. The vehicle is at risk for having the spring and strut assembly or the control arm assembly detaching from the frame under normal operation conditions. This is an incredible safety risk as it could result in the vehicle losing all steering control. Luckily it was found before an accident occurred.
Vehicle has excessive rust on the front frame cross member below the radiator. The excessive rust is also found by the front tow hooks which could affect the overall functionality of the front tow hooks. The rust appears to be flaking off and bubbling. Vehicle is kept in an enclosed car canopy.

Excessive frame rust and underbody rust. Most weld points and frame assembly is degrading from rust. Transmission coolant lines have cracked and leaked.
Major frame rust. The body is still great but when you look underneath it's a different story. I can flake off pieces of the frame with my finger. My mechanic says it may only have a couple of years left. I will have to take it to a dealership to get their opinion on the matter.
My 2003 Toyota 4runner started making a thump and scratching sound when driving as the road dips, turns, and when hitting any type or size of speed bumps and pot holes. After a closer inspection, the entire passenger side of the frame is rusted through. Tire discounter staff identified the rust issue. The body of the car is laying on the frame and the shock is hitting the body of the vehicle. Tire discounter staff state, you are one pot hole away from this frame breaking in half. the car is not safe to drive. the vehicle is rusted so bad that it looks to be 100 years old. The car is not drivable due to the rusted through frame.
Rusted frame. Hole right through it. Can't sell, register or do anything with it. Car has 188k miles, drives like a tank, and has years left in it, but not with a rusted out frame. No one showed it to me before I tried to sell it. I have owned for 7 years, 2nd owner.

I have a 2003 4runner with severe frame rust through making the vehicle a hazard to drive and to others on the road. This is clearly consistent with Toyota's other recalls.
I was driving to work when my back left tire frame broke apart. This is when I noticed severe rust on my frame. This is a major problem and I could have been a deadly crash. I called Toyota corporate and filed case #2006012210 and they told me that my car was not qualified for the frame to be replaced at their expense. They know all about the 2005-2011 4runners that suffer from corrosion so severe the weakened frames make it dangerous to ride in the suvs. I am luck to be alive. This is a serious issue and Toyota should take full responsibility for their negligence. Do they need someone to die to take action.
Severe rust on the frame.
The dealer would not inspect my vehicle because of frame rust. The whole frame has rust over it. The part that failed inspection was the end caps.
Frame is rusting. There are 2 big holes.
Frame is completely rusted out. The engine and transmission are strong but the frame is the weak link to this Toyota. This vehicle will not pass inspection and will need to be scrapped.
The amount of rust on the frame is getting quite worrisome. This is a known issue and recall with the tacoma, sequoia and tundra, so why not the 4-runner? there are holes starting to form and metal flakes off all the time. It has gotten to the point where it is a legitimate safety concern.
I have a 2006 Toyota 4runner with major rust issues, inside the structure of the frame is flaking apart also hole's in the frame where you can put your hand and feel the layers of the frame coming apart. The other open recalls with the tacoma, tundra and sequoia with the frame rust issue should have included the 4runner they use the same material for the frame as the other vehicles. They're are thousands of 4runners that are affected by this issue and the owners are just waiting for something to happen, I beg you to consider this for me and my family's safety. Thank you for your time.
We just had our 2005 toyoya 4runner in for the yearly inspection and were told that it will not pass inspection next year as the frame is rusted and corroded out. We bought the vehicle used in 2017 from a local Toyota dealer and when complained about it at a routine inspection was told it is normal wear and tear. We also have a 2000 Lexus 300 no rust issues what so for a vehicle 5 years older. I have seen numerous complaints and even a class action lawsuit against Toyota regarding rusting frame issues with the Toyota 4runners 2005-2011. Our mechanic even called Toyota about the frame rust and issue and was told that there is nothing they can do. Now I completely understand that a vehicle of the age and miles(141,809) will have issues that need to be fixed and replaced, but to have the frame rust out and it is not going to pass inspection the following year! that is ridiculous! we still owe on the personal loan for this vehicle! please look into this issue!.
My 2004 4runner frame has a major rust problem. It has holes all over and some parts are breaking down due to rust. I took it to a Toyota dealer. They told me that they cannot do anything. They didn't advice for replacement as the cost, they say, could be around $15,000. I didn't want to get rid of the car as it has only 74k miles and the body, interior and engine are in perfect conditions, almost like new.
Frame is rusted through.
Frame is really rusting bad as is the case with 100s of other 4runners. T4r. Org will show hundred upon hundreds of complaints of this. My truck only has 99k miles and the frame is almost completely wrecked. This has been an issue on these trucks for years and nothing has been done. Please look into this it's a huge safety issue!.
Frame rusting and I have rust holes in frame.
Car frame is completely rusted. Nothing is repairable anymore. Rear suspension and break lines effected by rust and broken! rear suspension can't be fixed due to rust broke connection to frame. This is not acceptable , specially since there is a recall for the same frame model on tundra, tacoma and sequioa at Toyota!.
