3 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2007 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 09/07/2015

When driving north on I-95, my car began to slow down even though I had not released pressure on the gas peddle, so I accelerated. As soon as I accelerated, the car then began to run extremely rough, the rpm monitor fluctuated back and forth, and the began to slow down even more. I looked in the rear view mirror to check traffic as I prepared to pull off the interstate and saw smoke coming from the rear of the car. When I stopped and exited the car, smoke was then bellowing profusely from the front right side of the hood and upper right tire rim, so much so that I thought the engine was about to explode. It should also be noted that the check engine light never came on. A tow truck was called and now I'm waiting for my local Toyota dealership to open so that I can find out what is wrong with my car. A similar energy surge and rough driving occurred approximately one year ago and my car was towed in, but no problem could be detected. The problem stopped as mysteriously as it appeared, with no serious reoccurrences until yesterday, 9/7/15. In 2014, the mechanic chalked the problem up to possibly bad or cheap gas.

4 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2003 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 05/28/2014

Electronic control module (ecm) issue: problem w/ intermittent warning lights for air bag some time ago (researching date)- took vehicle to dealership. No more light, but vehicle began stalling/losing power while driving- rarely, but became more frequent over time. Instrument panel/check engine lights will illuminate- now every minute or so while driving. Other people have same problem- NHTSA id 10605681. Took vehicle to dealer late may. Dealer on phone w/ Toyota multiple times + had tech from another dealer come and look at vehicle - could not figure out what was wrong. Dealer now says the ecm faulty. Not repaired, but dealer wants to charge 8hrs of diagnostic time and not repaired - can dealer charge if recall item? my concern is that problem is more than air bags- faulty ecm results in loss of power/control when engine shuts down, stalls or experiences intermittent loss of power- vehicle no longer safe to operate. I cannot drive it; I cannot sell it. Called Toyota, asked for part # of recalled srs/ecm- was told only local dealer has part numbers. They took information and transferred me to "Toyota corporate"- operator id'd as Toyota corporate asked questions, indicated they had documented my file. When I asked operator to confirm items operator had chosen to document, operator refused to respond to my requests for confirmation- I asked for supervisor- was told "no supervisor" there. Operator threw me on hold (on hold for over 30 minutes w/ corporate then transferred me to NHTSA w/out operator ever coming back on the line prior to transfer (NHTSA conf # available). "corporate" indicated that Toyota has no control over dealers- they can charge whatever they want to diagnose even if related to recall notice. Loss of use over 1 month. Dealer said no new ecm replacement part available. Pretty sure recall remedy inadequate.

5 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2005 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 12/18/2013

Check engine light came on, replaced #2 ignition coil. 800miles and 3 months later same thing happened, replaced #5 coil. Toyota dealer said this is normal for a high mileage car. Total cost $700+ if this is normal they should damn well pay for it. It takes reliable out of Toyota.

6 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2002 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 09/24/2013

While driving home on 9/24/13 my check engine light came on, I drove right to the Toyota dealership. I was informed that the catalytic converter system was below threshold ( code p0420). This repair cost me $2,541. 27. I was told this would correct the problem with my air bag light flashing. After paying for this repair my air bag light continues to flash, even though the service representative said the diagnostic did not show a code. I was previously told the code for the air bag was b0113. Since purchasing this 2002 Avalon I have had to have the valve assy, idle replaced at a cost of 978. 63, this is in addition to regular scheduled services. I have owned other cars for the same length of time and miles as this Toyota and I have never had so many problems outside regular services with any of my other vehicles (Mazda and Acura) I have completely lost confidence in the Toyota brand. I believe there are defects with the electrical system in the 2002 Avalon.

8 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2002 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 11/29/2010

I bought a used Toyota Avalon 2002 with @ 67k miles on it two months ago. I noticed that it occasionally had blue smoke coming out on cold start up. I took it to my local dealer for a regular oil change after 2,700 miles elapsed from when it was purchased. I did a carfax report on the vehicle prior to purchase and it showed that the vehicle was a one owner car with no repair or damage history before it was traded in. My wife drove it for @ 2,000 miles after the oil change when the engine oil light came on a few miles from our home. I checked the oil level and it didn't read anything on the dip stick. I was shocked when it took 4 1/2 quarts to read full. I immediately contacted the dealer (ehrlich Toyota, greeley, CO) that did my oil change and they scheduled an appointment today to assess the problem. I did some online research over the thanksgiving holiday about the problem prior to taking the car to the dealer. I discovered that Toyota has had significant problems with engine sludge that eventually causes sever damage to the affected engines. The dealer diagnosed this to be the problem with this car that I purchased on the 17th of September 2010. I discovered that Toyota came out with a csp (customer support program) to address this problem. In essence, Toyota agreed to perform any necessary repairs (including engine repair/overhaul) if the vehicle was identified with this problem and that the owner could prove regular oil changes had been done. This "one time" good faith fix applied to the affected vehicles for a period of 8 years plus 120 days after it's original purchase. I discovered that the original owner of my Avalon bought the car on the 24th of June 2002. That essentially makes my car out of the zone for this repair as of the 24th of October 2010. Because of this, the dealer said it's my problem! I can't tell you how furious this makes me that I'm now responsible for a defect I was never informed of at the purchase date of sept 17th 2010.

Steering colum adjusting control continues to release. This causes the steering wheel to go into the the dash area or up or down. There is no control of steering. Before this incident, oil burst all over the engine and drained out of my car, spilled onto the floor of my garage. The oil light or check engine light never came on. Dealer made repairs after keeping my car -not a recall notice but a noted problem. No power while pressing on the gas. 12 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2006 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 02/03/2009

On 2/3/09 while driving to work my check engine light came on. Once I arrived at work I could see that there was oil all over the rear and under carriage of my car. I checked the oil in the engine and it was empty. I had the car towed to the dealership. They told me that the vvti line had broke and all the oil in the engine was gone. The part was on back order for 2 weeks. They could not tell me the extent of the damage to the engine until they take it apart and inspect it. They gave me an estimated bill of $1800 for parts only, not including labor charges. My warranty expired 2,000 miles ago. My car is taken in for regular service. When I called Toyota they said they can not help me because the technical service bulletin put out about this part did not include my car, it was for the '05 model not the '06.

13 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2005 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 01/05/2006

: the contact stated the vehicle was taken to the dealership for an oil change within 7 miles of the dealership and driving 55mph the warning light and the check engine light illuminated. Within minutes the engine stalled. Upon inspection it was discovered the oil pressure dropped below the recommended level causing the failure. The design feature of the vehicle allows the engine to stall because of the low pressure before an engine failure. As a result to this feature there was a loss of power steering and brakes. A complaint was previously filed odi number, 10147740.

14 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2005 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 01/05/2006

Vehicle is 2005 Toyota Avalon feature is engine sensor that causes engine to shut down engine when operating temperature is exceeded or oil pressure drops below Toyota determined level. The vehicle was taken into Toyota for 5,000 oil change that morning. Service was not properly done by Toyota dealership. In operating the vehicle, the oil and engine lights turned on. While operating vehicle on highway trying to get back to the dealership, the engine shutdown with no warning to the driver or vehicles behind the Avalon. A traffic accident was barely averted. The Avalon abandoned driver on highway and impeded traffic. Vehicle had to be pushed to the side of the road by police while other officers controlled traffic. Oil filter was replaced and the oil was changed. This in no way limits the fact that due to design, the engine can shut down with little to no warning to the driver or the vehicles following. While it is nice that the engine can save itself, it should not be at the cost of injury to the driver or causing an accident due sudden deceleration without warning to other drivers. There was no property damage or a crash due only to quick reactions of the driver in the vehicle behind the Avalon.

15 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2000 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 08/11/2005

'check engine' light keeps coming when driving. Since 2005, two Toyota dealers and two independent repair shops were unable to correct the problem for good. Latest repair was in September 2015 at Toyota. Check engine light is still on.

16 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2001 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 06/05/2004

My check engine light came on. I took it to the dealership and they "diagnosed" the car for 8 days. They said they couldn't locate the problem. They finally indicated it was because of build-up on the #1 fuel injector and it had to be replaced at a cost of over $600. They also indicated it was not covered under warranty. The car had 42,000 miles on it at the time. It seemed odd to me that the powertrain is covered until 60,000 miles but the fuel injectors are not considered part of the powertrain. Approximately 10 days after getting my car back the check engine light came on again and been illuminated since.

21 Check Engine Light On problem of the 1996 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 02/15/2003

The engine cut out/stalled in the middle of the expressway with no warning. Pulled to the emergency lane, turned off engine, waited a while, turned engine back on and engine light was on for first time. Towed car to dealership, who indicates it is oil sludge due to failure to change oil frequently enough. Oil has been changed every 4000 miles. Getting no satisfaction from dealer, who indicates minimum repair cost will be $3300 - $3500 for rebuilt engine. Made complaint to Toyota corporate, who also are not providing assistance at this time. Getting run around as complaint was filed, which is being sent back to regional office for handling. Regional office already indicated that they probably aren't going to offer any assistance because the 1996 model isn't included in the oil sludge recall on 1997 - 2002 models. Engine has just over 63,000 miles on it. I bought the vehicle one year old with 29,000 miles on it. Only 34,000-35,000 miles has been put on the car in the last six years of my ownership. I feel very taken advantage of, and placed not only in harms way by a defective product, but with a financial burden now as well.

22 Check Engine Light On problem of the 1996 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 02/08/2003

Engine cut out/stalled in middle of expressway with no warning. Pulled to emergency lane, turned off engine, waited a while, turned engine back on, engine light was on. Took to dealership, who indicates it is oil sludge due to failure to change oil. Oil has been changed every 4000 miles. Getting no satisfaction at this point from dealer, who indicates minimum repair cost will be $3300 - $3500 for rebuilt engine. Made complaint to Toyota corporate, who also are not providing assistance. Getting run around as complaint was filed, which they are sending back to regional office for handling. Regional office already indicated that they probably aren't offering any assistance. Engine has less than 65,000 miles on it. Bought it one year old with 29,000 on it. There is no reason for this car to have engine trouble with less than 65,000 miles on it. Only 35,000 miles have been put on the car in last 6 years. Toyota needs to stick by their product, and make repairs that are required. Consumers at being placed in very poor position, and we are being taken advantage of.

24 Check Engine Light On problem of the 1996 Toyota Avalon

I own a 1996 Toyota Avalon with 53k miles on it. It started consuming oil and blowing smoke on cold starts over the winter. I have done numerous maintenance and repairs to rectify the problem. Before then, the check engine light came on 15months ago so I asked my Toyota dealer to check the engine. They did some minor checks and turned the light off. Currently my car has been diagnosed as "engine internall damaged needs engine" both the service manager mike and the district service manager acknowledged sludge in engine that caused diagnosed engine problems. I have been trying to resolve with Toyota corporate personell as I became aware of the 1997-2002 Toyota vehicles with the same engine that are currently being repaired by Toyota under the "spa campaign" that Toyota said they worked out with your organization. I have been offered 50% repair from Toyota corporate despite being accused of neglecting my vehicle(I provided Toyota with all of my scheduled mainteneance and oil change receipts at well within their recommended time/mileage intervals. I am aware of many other 1996 Toyota Avalon owners that are experiencing he same problems/false accusations an grief from Toyota. Some have received full payment for their engine repairs. Toyota needs to take responsibility for the oil gelling(sludge) problems many of their vehicles are having. I feel that my 3 small children and I are at risk of serious personal injury due to the problem with Toyotas 6 cyl engine. I would like to know if there is any assistance you can give me and why 1996 Avalons are not included in the "spa" program when it is the same engine and same engine problems occurring. Please help. Monica at Toyota said it was with your organization, guidance and approval that the current "spa" campaign was implemented. Toyota needs to stand up tall and support their loyal customers in good times and bad. It is way too easy to be a "fair weather friend" . Now we are "neglectful owners" hmmm.
