3 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2009 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 06/21/2018

In a June 21 "t- bone" collision in which I was hit by an SUV on the left side while driving on us 20 in western massachusetts, none of the side airbags deployed. This resulting in severe injury to my left rib cage (11 of 12 ribs either broken or cracked). The SUV had run a stop sign and was estimated to have been going 45-50 mph. The driver and passenger front airbags deployed, but not the side airbags that would have provided vital protection. I suspect that the sensors failed to trigger the airbag deployment.

6 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2006 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 11/25/2014

My car has always been kept in the garage, except for being at work. I have cracks all over the passengers side airbags. I was in the hospital getting a lung transplant when the extended service letter came out offering to replace it. I didn't drive for two years because of illness. When I went to the Toyota dealer he said I missed the deadline by a week. He said he had the parts and would like to do it but would need an ok from Toyota corporate . I called Toyota and they said there is nothing they can do. If there is a class action lawsuit on this I would like to join. . I did nothing to cause this, it is a manufacturer defect and a safety hazard. I f the airbags deploy, it could kill someone.

8 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2006 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 06/06/2014

The Toyota Avalon limited was hit broadsided at around 50 mph, or more on the driver side and the side airbags did not inflate. The driver had to be cut out of the car and the back passenger received some whiplash, and there was some damage to the back door. The whole dashboard received damage and buckled. The front passenger had severe trauma to her left leg. The car is totaled. I bought this car new in 10/2005. A recall of 133 cars were made around 3/2006. I was not the one notified and my air bags did not inflate and that was one of the reasons I bought this car. Why wasn't my car notified? I really don't know if the front airbags would have worked if we were in a frontend collision.

12 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2001 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 03/30/2011

3/30/11 coming out of a right hand turn, it looked like the steering locked into a position which caused the driver to lose the ability to steer. The car slid and the driver's side door was crushed into a tree. The driver side airbag did not work. The driver was injured and was later pronounced dead at the hospital from internal injuries. The car has been preserved at a storage facility in texas since shortly after the accident. It is available for inspection. Not sure whether the gas pedal stuck or not. I was told that there was a black box in these cars which could possibly lead to answers. The steering on the vehicle was recalled and the vehicle was brought to the Toyota dealership for the repair in January 2011. I have copies of the repair bill. Please see that no others are hurt. Updated 10/31/11.

14 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2005 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 10/23/2009

A coach bus traveling at 60 km + (40 + miles per hr) ran a red light and hit my Avalon 2005 xls turning left. My speed was between 20km - 25 km (12- 15 miles) an hour. Not one of my 12 airbags deployed. When I realized that the bus was going to hit I took my hands off the wheel and removed my feet from both brake and gas pedal with the intent to put the car in neutral. I was lucky - I suffered a shattered wrist and some bruising. The front car was crushed and totaled although the impact came from the nose right across. Paramedics and auto collision shop both expressed shock at the non deployment of these bags. The collision center says they look defective. There was a recall of these vehicles in 2006 for airbag problems. Toyota has not yet checked the vehicle and has not informed us if this is one of the recalled cars. This car would have been manufactured in the USA. A coach bus has a lot of mass. Why no airbags?.

15 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2002 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 04/25/2009

Airbag light on 2002 Toyota Avalon with 65000 miles was flashing and took to dealer. Diagnosed with b1141 code -side airbag sensor assembly malfunction. Cost to repair included complete replacement of the driver seat at $2000. Find this cost unreasonable and don't trust dealer that there is not a cheaper way to fix. Interesting that I had two side collisions and in either case, side airbag did not deploy. Defective airbag assembly should be replaced at no charge due to safety issue.

2000 Avalon xls - my wife was hit broadside by another car that ran a red light @~50 mph. The impact occurred on the drivers side and knocked the vehicle 25 feet sideways down the road. The side air bags failed to deploy. The car was deemed a total loss by the insurance company and they took possession of the vehicle.

17 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 1999 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 07/20/2004

The Avalon was involved in an accident and was struck on the rear passenger door. None of the airbags deployed. The point of impact was only a few inches away from one of the passenger side airbag. The car spun off the road onto the grass verge but fortunately the driver was able to get it back under control. I have contacted Toyota many times over the weeks since the accident, asking if this was normal or was there an airbag failure. Toyota have been dodging the question and "referring me to the appropriate department". They said they would 'inspect it', during a two week stay at their dealership but they didn't. I am concerned that the airbags, particularly the side ones did not deploy. Is there a fault in the system, or if they are not designed to operate under these circumstances , then why fit them?.
