Complete loss of acceleration (up to 5 seconds or so) while making turns after having either slowed down, or completely stopped. Two of those times have almost resulted in accidents from oncoming vehicles. Complaint made at a Toyota dealership. They claim no recall information, but have indicated that it wasn't the first time they've heard of it. No solution given other than the 800# to call Toyota directly to make a complaint. Nice.

I was traveling at 70 mph on the 210 east near pasadena, California, and under normal driving condition, the vehicle?s brakes failed near the mountain street exit. My immediate reaction was to use the hand brake, after which I pumped the brake pedal in an attempt to restore the mechanism. I was unsuccessful in doing so. Turning on the emergency lights, I traveled for about 2 miles, going through a tunnel, and took the first exit, lake avenue, off the freeway. I left vehicle at a friend?s place close to the exit. While attempting to restore the brakes all along, the car finally did stop on a side street near the exit. I was transporting three adults and a child in the car at this time. The vehicle was not involved in a crash, and accordingly there were no deaths or injuries. This is the first occurrence of an incident of this nature. I am the first owner of the vehicle. The vehicle was purchased from frontier Toyota in valencia, California. Acting on the advice of the service representation at frontier Toyota, who indicated that the vehicle had a warranty on it that would cover the towing, I had the vehicle towed to the dealership. Upon inspection, I was informed that the warranty would not cover the towing, and that the towing charges of $264. 00 had to be paid for the vehicle to be released. The vehicle was later inspected, and the brakes were certified as ?in good condition? by a mechanic at frontier Toyota. The mechanic?s records that were furnished by the dealership indicated that the brakes had work done on them. The mechanic certified that the brakes pads were good, without addressing the inherent problem that exists with the entire breaking system. The breaks, as I experienced it while driving probably had an air leak in the pedal. I was extremely disappointed in the service provided at the dealership, and the basic overall performance of the vehicle.

I own a 1996 Camry v6 le with 4-wheel disk brakes, and its current mileage is close to 90,000 miles. I have never worn out the front disk pads, while I have replaced the rear pads a few times. Toyota says it's my gentle driving style that causes the unusual wear. I say that the proportioning valve set at the factory is mis-set, but it takes special tools to change and no one has these tools, so I can't prove my point. The big question to is my car stopping with two brakes or 4 brakes, as it was designed to do?.

Ever since this car was purchased it has been affected by a super sensitive anti-lock braking system. When routinely braking over a pothole or small road disturbance, the anti-lock braking system is triggered. This in turn causes car to roll much further than it is suppose to. I have repeatedly taken to dealer through the years and they could not locate what is causing the problem. The brake pads and discs are all fine, the car is already around 9 years old and only has 37k miles on it because we have always been afraid to drive the car extensively because of this issue.

Though they have been replaced entirely at least once, the brakes on my 2003 Camry still squeak upon a gradual brake during the day. Other than the squeak, I must admit that they brakes do work well. This may not be a safety problem unless I get so used to the squeak that I don't catch the 'telltale' that many pad manufacturers put in their pads to give an audio clue to change their brake pads.

I own a 2004 Toyota Camry le, my problem with this vehicle are two things one is the braking system/abs and the second is the tires bridgestone. The pedal is too soft, doesn't stop the car as it should, the abs locked on many occasions regardless of the weather condition. I managed to hit a the front of the car twice and once in the rear. All of the abs system, while the damage is only to my car its becoming a very serious safety issue regarding the how safe is this vehicle. I have spoken with the dealer and he replaced the pads once, however the problem still exist and the rear breaks are making squeaky sound. I have 21,000 miles on this car and its my first new car and it will be the last Toyota I own. The dealer denies any problems and they say its normal but its not.

Dealer resurfaced the fronts rotors and replaced the pads. At 21,000 miles the front rotors were resurfaced and the pads were replaced again. At 23,000 miles the front pads were replaced for a third time and at 42,000 miles they replaced strut mounting. At 43,000 front and rear brakes were replaced for the fourth time.

Without warning, I. E. Squealing, sounds, etc. , I experienced increased stopping distance when I pressed the brakes to avoid a collision. When I returned the car to the dealer/service, they stated that the front pads are metal to metal. The car has 89,000 miles and the brakes and portions of the braking system have been replaced on average every 8,000 miles. This has been the eleventh time that there has been brake problems with this car. The front brake pads are being worn prematurely. There is usually a lot of brake dust and crystallized or solid material falling from the front brake pads. The dealer/mechanic/service has stated various reasons for the brake failures each time, but the problem is never resolved. This car has abs.

During a routine maintenance check, the dealer determined that the rear brake pads locked up and damaged the brake pads and rotors. The dealer resurfaced the rear brake rotors and replaced the rear brake pads.
I am the original owner of a 1999 Toyota solara (purchased March 1999). Last month with 34,825 miles on it, I had to have the front rotors and brake pads replaced for the second time. The first time was in June 2001 with 22,125 miles on the vehicle. Both times, the dealer blames excessive rust and runout on the rotors as the cause of serious steering wheel vibration when braking. They claim I do not drive the car and use the brakes enough. The solara is garage kept and gets at least as much use as any other car I have owned and I have never had to have any brakes and rotors replaced for this reason and four of the cars I owned for a period of nine years each. Two of those sat outside their entire existence and averaged a grand total of three to four thousand miles/year. I have tried dealing with the dealer rep and he and the regional service manager tell me there is nothing they should do about it and I should expect to be doing this again every two years. This does not seem right to me and so far I have gotten the response from customer service that they stand behind the opinions of their dealer service techs. Even after repair, I get some vibration in pedal and steering wheel at times. Have also had problems with antilock brakes. Just today I had to avoid an accident as a car pulled out in front of me and antilock released braking causing a longer braking distance than necessary. One day when stopping at a traffic light in good weather conditions on a smooth surface, anti-lock kicked in and released braking power. I wound up with the whole front end of the car in the intersection. I was only going about 30-35 mph as I was in a residential area. I was lucky no one was coming. Any time you try to stop on a rough surface, it can be an adventure. You always have to remember to keep extra distance with this car. Anytime brought up to dealer, they said could not duplicate and this is the way antilock brakes are supposed to work.
The vehicle experienced problem with the rotors. It was determined that the rotors were warped and the pads did not fit correctly.

The consumer wanted to know if there was a problem in manufacturing or quality control of 2003 Camry brake system. The consumer believed when the vehicle left the factory, the brakes were out of adjustment. When the consumer had to apply the brakes, he discovered the brakes were spongy and the brake pedal traveled to the floor. It was discovered the rear brakes were out of adjustment, the front brake pads contained glaze and the front springs were inoperative.
The front disc brake rotors are warping despite normal driving, causing shaking of steering wheel when braking and possibly compromising vehicle stopping ability. It occurred at 10,000 miles. Toyota warranty service only provides for resurfacing the rotor rather than part replacement. Is this problem due to defective rotor materials and/or faulty brake system design.

The problem is with both frront and back brakes. Chronology of problems with brakes: when the odometer reached about 400 miles, the brakes started to squeak intermittently. On Mar. 28, 2002, I brought the car to herb chambers Toyota of boston service department. They found the brakes shoes were glazed up and did the repair. Assured that everything was ok, I drove home. Two blocks down the street, I could hear the brakes squeaking again. I immediately turned around and went back to the service dept. They found that the front brake pads needed replacement. They had to order the parts and would call me when the parts were delivered. After they notified me of the delivered parts, I brought the car in on April 4, 2002. One hour later, they told me that both rotors were cracked! again, they had to order the parts and should be able to get them the next day. Meanwhile I had to get a rental to go home, which they paid for. Next morning, I called them to check on the status. I was told that the parts would not come in for another week. So they planned to take rotors off from another "brand new" Camry and put them on mine. The repair was finished around noon time. When I picked up the car, the service advisor reassured me that everything should be fine. After driving for a couple weeks, I started to hear squeaky brakes again. At first I thought the noise came from other cars on the road. As the squeak got louder and more frequent, I knew the noise was from my new Camry. I brought it back to the service dept. On may 8, 2002. Within one hour, the service advisor said they were not going to fix it, pending advice from Toyota. . She did not know when they would get it but said that squeaky brakes should not be a safety issue. I do not think the dealer is taking this matter seriously. The brakes are squeaking badly. Some unknown reason had caused the rotors to crack before, can anyone guarantee that it will not happen again?.
Premature disc pad failure- left pads 0% , right side pads had 60% remaining. Complained to dealer at 11k miles that brake light was on. They wanted to charge me for brake service that they said was due at 7,500 miles and would not add fluid without charging. I refused it as being quite preposterous! repair cost me $75.
Brake pads had to be replaced every 8000 miles. Brake light came on, and consumer heard a noise, like metal rubbing against metal. Contacted dealer, and dealer replaced pads under warranty twice, but third time dealer did not replace pads because warranty had expired.
When applying brakes they grind and make noise. Dealer replaced pads. But, grinding sound persisted. Dealer adjusted brakes, still noisy. Currently, dealer said that all Toyotas do that, and they could replace brakes with after market brakes to remedy problem.
When driving and upon depressing brake pedal to make a normal stop pedal traveled to floorboard, causing extended stopping distance. Also, consumer heard noise coming from front end. Front brake pads were experiencing excessive wear. The brake pads failed at 12000 miles and again at 16200 miles. The consumer is concerned about brake safety on long trips.
In a parking lot getting ready to pull onto a major highway brakes failed, and vehicle slid into the highway. Contacted dealer who couldn't find anything wrong. Let sister drive it, and she heard grinding noise. Also could feel it under the pedal. Had the vehicle serviced, and they replaced the front brake pads, but problem continued.
Both front brake rotors refaced and pads replaced. Yh.

In 30000 miles we have replaced front rotors twice, pads 3 times, and tires twice-Toyota has told us this wear is normal.

Since purchasing my 98 Toyota Camry 10/3/97, I have two separate incidents whereas my brakes did squeak & squeal when stopping. Brought my car into Toyota on two separate occiaisions and was told by dealership that they were aware of a brake problem, and would provide a temporary quick fix until the mfgr recalled the Camry's. I've had ft pads & machine rotors & rear brakes adjusted 2-3 times in 98. I've paid $300+ towards this service to my new car and there is still no resolution to this problem. Did advise dealership that I will by another car, but it will not be a Toyota Camry. I'll begin purchasing Honda products beginning in 99 and will not go back to Toyota after being a faithful customer for over 10+ years.

On the date of failure, during a routine visit to a Toyota shop, my front brake pads were measured to be 8mm. Since that time, and with Toyota techs taking the measurements, their size has not reduced more than 0. 5 mm. Since the rear pads seem to be wearing at a quicker-than-expected rate (they were 10mm new, 6mm on the above date and 3. 5mm currently), I am concluding that the front brakes are not being employed properly, and this condition is putting me and my passengers at a great safety risk. I have taken the car to two Toyota shops, and have had their district service manager involved, but Toyota claims that the brakes are good because the line pressure readings are within specifications. I have not witnessed these tests nor have they told me what the readings should be, so I can't be sure that the tests were performed. They have not attempted a repair, and won't do so, because "there is nothing wrong" and if there was, it's not related to the warranty. They tell me that I just have very good brakes. They will not address how the brakes can be working, but not wearing. Since I have had them inspect the brakes at least three times, I have paid for at least one inspection, they have told me to take my complaint to arbitration in accordance with the warranty. I do not understand how the Toyota people can tell me that the front brakes are functioning correctly without showing any wear. They work by wearing. I believe that Toyota should be required to repair or replace brake system components, under warranty, until my brakes are working properly, that is, the front brakes are doing most of the stoppin, as they should.
