Brake Foundation Components Problems of Toyota Camry - part 2

Vehicle expriencing ongoing problem with brake system squeaking while stopping or making a turn. Vehicle been in/out of dealer shop on two occasions for repair and parts replacement. But squeaking still occurs. Seeking NHTSA help in this matter.

When applying the brakes and stopping to turn a corner there is a loud noise coming from the brakes. The pedal is soft, and if the brakes don't stop the vehicle driver has to press the brakes again until can get the vehicle to come to a stop. The dealer said there was no problem with the brakes.

On three occasions brakes failed. On one incident brakes failed causing collision.

While driving the vehicle pulls to the left lane. Also, while braking the vehicle pulls to left which may cause an accident. Been to dealer several, cannot determine problem. In addition, when the window is wet the occupant cannot see through the window. Please provide details.

When driving the vehicle the brakes went out and then caught on fire in the engine compartment. The vehicle has been totalled.

When consumer comes to a stop brakes grind. Mechanic has told her after 4 times, in for repair, that is normal. Consumer states metal to metal grinding is not normal.

While braking a grinding noise begins experienced with extended stopping distances, replaced pads and rotors however continues to experience same difficulties.

While braking vehicle makes a grinding noise, and there is extended stopping distance which may cause an accident. Also, dealer replaced brake pads and rotated the rotors, but problem still exists. Please provide further information and VIN#.

Defective braking system, causing a grinding noise and extended stopping distance. Dealer had to replace brakes set 4 times. Please provide further information.

While driving & had applied the brakes, a loud, grinding noise could be heard. Took it back to dealer & informed nothing was wrong 1st time. The 2nd time noise heard, was informed a crack developed in front brakes & it was repaired. The 3rd time, noise heard again & again the mechanic said nothing was wrong.

Brakes locked up when applied, caused accident, hit steele pole; dual airbags did not deploy.

Poor brake performance, when the brakes were applied in panic situations, they did not respond immediately, causing extended stopping distance, resulting in an accident.

Consumer states that the brakes make a loud clucking noise when operated from forward to reverse or reverse to forward gears.

Brakes grind when applied due to design flaw. .

Upon starting vehicle at idle speed, the control valve sticks. This problem has been examined by dealership, and consumer has been told that this was normal. Brakes experience grinding, squeaking, and vibration, rotors were warped and brake pads were glazed, brakes have been replaced, however problem continues. Consumer states there is a suspension problem that is causing uneven tire wear. Vehicle experiences several engine related problems, motor mounts were weak causing steering wheel vibration, 16 valve seals came apart due to being installed incorrectly, water pump leaked, timing belt failed, valve cover leaked, and cam seal was replaced. Vehicle experienced transmission related problems, right outer axle boot was split and leaking grease, cv boots failed twice, shifter was hard and was making noises, dealer found the shifter lever plate was broken, transmission pan gasket was replaced, there was a clunking noise in the rear when going in reverse. The car jack was missing from the trunk and the antenna was inoperable. Dealer found an open circuit in the battery. Consumer noticed a rattling noise under the right front seat, dealer secured seat slide adjuster hook, temperature gauge did not work properly. Overdrive light was inoperable. Vehicle has experienced several fuel related problems, the egr valve assembly, egr modulator, idler control valve, idle air speed control, distributor o-ring, idler bearing, isc valve, and vacuum switching valve have all been replaced, blue smoke was coming out of the exhaust, dealer cleaned the throttle body, fuel injection, and recalibrated the fuel sensor, vehicle was running rough and stalling due to faulty egr vacuum modulator, dealer stated that the valve would default if there was too much oil added, the valve is too small so it will stick or become clogged up with carbon build up.

Consumer feels their is a design problem with the braking system, resulting in the brakes not stopping the vehicle and making grinding noise.

We have owned Camrys since 1985. Took delivery this car w/3 miles on odometer - brakes felt "mushy" but gave them a break-in period of several 100 miles, then returned car to dealer with complaint of mushy brake pedal - excessive pedal travel & instances of the pedal sinking to the floor. Svc writer never wrote up an r/o and said that that was the the way the "new" brakes were supposed to feel. Un-satisfied with the explanation icontacted Toyota's e-mail response line and complained. They arranged a return service appt with the dealer - r/o was written up and rear brakes were "cleaned and adjusted" - the car was never test driven the other complaints. Problem was un-corrected. Contacted Toyota's e-mail service again and a personal appt w/dealers svc supv was made. No r/o was written up but he took a test drive in my car & allowed me to test drive a 2002 "demonstrator. " unfortunately the brakes reacted and felt the same way in both vehicles. He explained that the re-designed brake system gave this effect and, further, that the lengthy pedal travel could not be adjusted out. I cannot understand how these re-designed brakes can be considered safe! the pedal travel if at least 4-5 inches long and before the braking effect even begins the level of the brake pedal is below that of the accelerator pedal. If your foot is not centered on the brake pedal (as in a panic stop situation) it is entirely conceivable that one could be contacting both the brake and accelerator pedals at the same time, both braking and accelerating simultaneously. In addition, the long pedal travel before the brakes take effect adds an extra reaction time to the stopping process thereby lengthening the stopping distance. I am most unhappy with these brakes and for the first time in 17 years, unhappy and dissatisfied with Toyota's response to this problem. I definitely feel that this car is more unsafe to drive than our second car, a '99 Camry.

I have called and left messages on the dealers managers phone with no return call, have went to dealership and he is not available. Air conditioner is very smelly, passenger front door hard to open-sometimes doesn't, brakes sound and feels strange to me (mechanic doesn't think so), when key is taken from igintion it is hot, transmission was replaced w/a rebuilt one.
