With only 17000 mile on the car I had to have all the fuel injectors replaced and have the engine DE-carbonize. Ealer replaced the injectors, charged me for the DE-carbonize and suggested to switch often to different fuel manufactures and a remendy, but could not guarantee that it would not happen again.

Smelled gas fumes, dealer basically told us not to worry. When driving along to take vehicle to dealer it caught on fire and then exploded. Vehicle only 1 month old and I had this problem since a week after purchase. Mr.
Car was being driven on a gravel road. The inside of the car filled with smoke rapidly and without any previous indication of problem or warning. All gauges registered normal. Driver exited the car and saw fireballs falling from under the hood. The car was totally burned and was a total loss. The main point is that there was no previous problems with the car and it had been maintained per the manufacturers specs. We are not sure of what caused the fire, but had to be related to fuel since it burned so fast.

The idle speed control valves on two 1996 Toyota Camry's sold in California, fail every 20,000 to 30,000 miles, and require replacement at a cost of approximately $425. 00 per replacement. This is not normal wear in other cars solid in California. There have been three failures per car.
Idle air control (iac) valve has failed 2 times and has been replaced 2 times at Toyota of huntington beach. First time on 3/23/2001 and second time on 1/17/2002. Identical symptoms of past failures starting to appear again, as of about 10/1/2002. Dt.

I was accelerating on the freeway when the car shuddered and I saw smoke coming out of the hood. I was able to pull over quickly, released the hood and stepped out of the car thru the passenger side door. I opened the hood and saw the fuel injector was on fire so I immediately slammed shut the hood and called for help. Fortunately a motorcycle cop from the san diego police was at the scene just moments after it happened. He radioed for a fire truck which arrived about 15 minutes later as this happened during the rush hour (5:45 pm). The engine was completely engulfed in flames by then. Aaa has not determined yet if the car will be totalled but I'm pretty sure it will based on the extent of the visible damage. I had this car serviced by kearny mesa Toyota about two months prior to this incident for a check engine light. They replaced the vacuum switch valve.

This car is a lemon. I have had five integrated relay's replaced and now it is out again. The headlight or the dash lights will work, but not both at the same time. Toyota said it was because I had a non-factory alarm installed. They replaced the alarm with a Toyota alarm and replaced the relay and it burned out the following day. They can't find the problem. The air conditioner has had a musty smell since the car was new. They spray the vents with "frigi fresh" and it's fine for a few days and the smell returns. They told me to spray simple green in the air intake once a week. That's a pretty poor remedy. The transmission will not hold on any incline. Sometimes the car will pull into the garage by it self and other times it will roll into the street. It depends on it's mood. The car lack power. Some days the car is peppy but most days it's a old mule. I went through arbitration and Toyota just keeps replacing parts instead of replacing the car. It's sits in the garage now because is not dependable. I think there needs to be an in-depth investigation and recall of the 1999 Camry.
Vehicle failed to start due to fuel injection failure and failure of the spark plugs.
While driving smoke was noticed coming from the hood, and when pulled over, the hood was popped open. Burst of flames came from under the hood that was believed to have started in the fuel injection system. Dealer was contacted.

Start up fuel injection failed.
Upon starting vehicle at idle speed, the control valve sticks. This problem has been examined by dealership, and consumer has been told that this was normal. Brakes experience grinding, squeaking, and vibration, rotors were warped and brake pads were glazed, brakes have been replaced, however problem continues. Consumer states there is a suspension problem that is causing uneven tire wear. Vehicle experiences several engine related problems, motor mounts were weak causing steering wheel vibration, 16 valve seals came apart due to being installed incorrectly, water pump leaked, timing belt failed, valve cover leaked, and cam seal was replaced. Vehicle experienced transmission related problems, right outer axle boot was split and leaking grease, cv boots failed twice, shifter was hard and was making noises, dealer found the shifter lever plate was broken, transmission pan gasket was replaced, there was a clunking noise in the rear when going in reverse. Consumer noticed a rattling noise under the right front seat, dealer secured seat slide adjuster hook, temperature gauge did not work properly. Overdrive light was inoperable. Vehicle has experienced several fuel related problems, the egr valve assembly, egr modulator, idler control valve, idle air speed control, distributor o-ring, idler bearing, isc valve, and vacuum switching valve have all been replaced, blue smoke was coming out of the exhaust, dealer cleaned the throttle body, fuel injection, and recalibrated the fuel sensor, vehicle was running rough and stalling due to faulty egr vacuum modulator, dealer stated that the valve would default if there was too much oil added, the valve is too small so it will stick or become clogged up with carbon build up.
Noticed starting problem, then none of the electrical devices working, then while driving vehicle suddenly accelerated up to 25mph and down to 10mph.
