2000 Toyota Camry caught on fire August 7th, 2018. I was driving on a city street and my radio kept going on and off while driving, I noticed the check engine light came on so I pulled into a parking lot and parked the car. I turned off the car and started to smell smoke. I opened the hood and the engine compartment was on fire on the right side near the battery. I was able to get a fire extinguisher and put the fire out but I have significant damage. I have not seen a recall on this issue but my car should not start on fire. I submitted a claim to Toyota (claim# 180808-000043) asking if there is a technical bulletin. Toyota sent their inspector and he noted the starter failed to disengage from flywheel causing fire. The starter kept running burning it out and also burning the positive cable to the battery. Toyota did not share a copy of the report with me. The damage was severe enough to write off the car with only 95,000 miles on it. This needs to be investigated. Why would my car starter catch on fire like this?.

1999 Toyota Camry le 4cyl starter failed to disengage from flywheel causing fire. The starter kept running burning it out and also burning the positive cable to the battery. Damage to the battery is under investigation. I was sitting parked in a parking lot with the radio and the air on when I observed smoke coming from the engine then started to come into the car thru the air conditioning. I turned the car off but the smoke continued and the fire dept was called. After looking at the internet this seems to be a widely known issue with multiple postings. I have not seen a recall on this. It needs to be investigated. My insurer said that my claim will be denied due to mechanical failure. Toyota needs to he held accountable.

Poor design and build - 1997 Toyota Camry le (4 cylinder). I own a 1997 4-cylinder Camry le. It is well maintained and has less than 80,000 miles. A few months ago, its starter went bad and was replaced. This morning, the dealer found that its engine valve seals worn out and must be replaced (over $1000 repair). I checked the internet car forums and found that this is a common problem with 1997 model year 4-cylinder Toyota Camry. I believe that it is a poor design and build problem. Customers should not be paying a problem caused by the manufacturer's poor design and build. All 1997 4-cylinder Camry should be recalled and repaired by Toyota.

On Monday, September 2 the driver side lighted mirror on the visor fell off causing the two wires behind the lighted mirror to come loose and contact each other. This proceeded to short out filling the cars cabin with smoke. The car was stopped immediately on a local road, turned off and both my wife and 21-month old son were quickly removed from the car. I was notified of this occurrence by a local neighbor and upon my arrival saw a very frightened wife holding my 21-month old son and a smoke filled car. Upon restarting the car to return back to my home the car immediately began to make a very loud whining sound. After arriving back at my home approximately 1 minute away I turned off the engine only to find that the engine would not shut off. I then immediately opened the hood and began to disconnect the positive side of the battery. In the approximate 2 minutes this took, the engine progressively whined louder and louder until the starter began to smoke and the engine came to an abrupt stop. At this point I finally disconnected the positive side of the battery.
