The center electronic 6 function etune console, which contains the radio/cd player, gps, car and cell phone operations, died on Nov 16, 2020. I made appointment and took it to daytona Toyota the next day. The tech did a diagnostic and told me that the radio unit was fried. Sm said a replacement unit would cost $827. I agreed. I drove my car home and noticed that the radio had revived, but the only thing in the lcd panel was the station # in the top left corner of screen. No other function worked and I noticed for the first time that the steering wheel stereo/mode controls did not work. I brought the car back 4 days later to have the radio replaced and told them that the old radio am/fm had been working, but none of the other functions, and the steering wheel function buttons did not work. The tech did a 2nd diagnostic and found that the wiring harness had become twisted and some of the connectors pulled loose. They told me it would be an additional $650 to replace the defective wiring harness. They ordered the part and replaced it two days later. Has any other Toyota owner reported this problem?.

I purchased the vehicle from a dealer in June of 2020 and was unaware of any ongoing recalls or that any required service had not been completed. I've had the vehicle in the shop multiple times for engine stalling while driving, engine shaking, misfiring, and loss of forward momentum. Not once did they tell me about the recall or that Toyota was aware of the problem until I took the vehicle to a different automotive shop. The new shop gave me all the recall information and advised that the vehicle is not safe to drive. The engine will sputter and shake in idle and in reverse. Consistently the vehicle shakes and runs very rough when in idle, reverse or attempting to accelerate from stop lights, red lights, parking lots, etc. Dealership told me that I wasn't used to the electronic fuel ignition and that the sputtering and delay in forward momentum was normal. One time I was driving 65mph and the vehicle stalled while on a island causeway. Luckily I was in the right had lane and was able to get off the road safely. Another time the vehicle stalled was in a parking lot (again slow speed) and again in reverse. The vehicle did sustain rodent damage to wiring on 2 occasions which the dealership repaired, noted the multiple engine misfires and "cleared the codes". The vehicle ran better for about a week and then the same problem begins reoccurring. The spark plugs continue to foul due to the engine fuel pressure issue.

I purchased a Toyota Camry on 2/17/20. Two weeks later the srs airbag malfunction light started to illuminate and the rear seatbelt alarm continously sound off alerting me to fasten seatbelts when no one was sitting back there. I tried taking the vehicle back to the dealer I purchased it from to see what was going on but was told it had to be taken to Toyota. After taking the vehicle to Toyota, I found out the wiring harness had been torn and that it would cost me $4,900. 00 to fix the issue. I was also told if I was ever in an accident, the airbag more than likely wouldn't deploy. Since discovering this issue, I have not been driving the vvehicledue to the safety issue.

Rodent damaged wiring harness for direct injection system while while vehicle was parked outside home at night. After repair, damage happened again, dealer and manufacturer response was that I was responsible for repiar and suggested an adhoc set of solutions to discourage animals -- dryer sheets, pinesol, commercial animal repellent.
In August 2918, the vehicle was purchased from mcgeorge Toyota of richmond, virginia. In February 2019,the ac was not cooling. It was found that there were several high pressure leaks. The condenser was replaced in the car and has attempted to be repaired three other times, as two other times the freon was found to be low, and leaks from high pressure lines. After the second repair in March 2019, the wiring was found to be faulty, which in turn heated the vents up so hot, it produced a mild burn on my fingers. While driving, the temperature of the air coming out of the vents was extremely hot, so I turned the blower down and attempted to move the vents in an upright position. Furthermore, the mirror was found to be defective and a piece fell off while driving on the highway in January of 2019. Today, on 10/24/19, the car malfunctioned while in motion and in a stationary position. When this event occurred, it effected power, steering, brakes, air bags and several other major functions. I left for work and noticed my car just seemed to be driving oddly. I pulled off to see what was going on and get coffee. I turned the car off, went into the store. When I came to the vehicle and started it, I put it in reverse and could not turn the wheel. Nearly all of the warning lights came on. I turned the vehicle off and let it sit for several minutes. When I turned the vehicle back on, all of the lights were off and the vehicle was able to move and drive normally. Overall, this vehicle has had several major issues with wiring, electrical, body and has posed a serious threat to my safety. I have contracted the manufacturer several time and several attempts have been made to repair it; however the problems are consistent. The manufacturer demonstrates a lack of accountability for these defects and has been notified of these safety concerns.
The front passenger and rear driver door locks/unlocks intermittently. Sometimes, I have to lock/unlock manually, other times it works with the key fob. There is no rhyme, reason or pattern to when it does or doesn't work. The doors normally lock when I shift out of park, it now does it intermittently as well. I have checked the fuse, switch, and wiring. They are all in good working order. When I push the lock button, both doors click, but do not always lock/unlock.
Hi, my Toyota 2016 Camry is used as a daily driver. I purchased the new car at the dealership were I work. My job is in the shipping / receiving department and on a monthly basis I will witness 4 to 8 wiring harness repairs. When I asked my manager about it he said "rodent damage, they seem to like the glue or adhesive". We'll guess what ? it has happened too me! a single damaged wire can be debilitating to the electronics in a motor vehicle. In January of this year my complete harness had to be replaced. This is because the wiring harness is not made in a modular or sectional option. Please can this ( what seems to be a reoccurring matter) be looked into and possibly addressed?.

Tl the contact owns a 2018 Toyota Camry. While the contact's daughter was pulling out of the garage, the vehicle lost power and the check engine indicator illuminated. The vehicle was towed to Toyota of santa cruz (4200 auto plaza dr, capitola, CA 95010, (831) 462-4200) where it was diagnosed that the soybean wires were damaged by rodents. The vehicle was not repaired. The insurance company was scheduled to assess the damage. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 5,000. The VIN was not available.
I was driving my car on a secondary road and warning lights started going off at the same time(abs, precollision warning, engine light, etc. ) my husband drove it to the local Toyota dealership. The Toyota service rep advises me that the engine wires have been chewed by rodents. He also advises me that this is not a Toyota problem so my bumper to bumper warranty would not cover it. He advised my auto insurance would have to pay for it. The problem is a Toyota problem. They have started using plant-based material to cover the wiring which attracts rodents. There is a class action lawsuit, but not for my model of car. Also, this is going to get someone killed, because you can't hardly keep the car on the road after it happens. I don't have any paperwork yet, because my car is still at the dealership.
The contact owns a 2018 Toyota Camry. Upon starting the vehicle, the traction and check engine warning indicators illuminated. Also, when the accelerator pedal was depressed, the vehicle started shaking. The vehicle was taken to darcars 355 Toyota rockville (15625 frederick rd, rockville, MD 20855 (301) 340-0900) where it was diagnosed that rodents chewed through the insulation and wiring, which needed replacement. The vehicle was repaired. The contact researched the failure online and found that a soy-based product was used in making the insulation and wiring, which could attract rodents. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue and did not assist. The failure mileage was 700.
Mice, jumping out of everywhere while I'm driving!!! my insurance paid out over $4000. 00 and I paid $500 deductible plus $300 to have metal screens put in. I had to replace heater core, air conditioning core, heater fan, duct work, where the mice had built a nest. When the heater fan came on it was like putting the mice through a blender. Mouse part everywhere!! soy used in wiring is to blame. Shame on the us government and Toyota for dumping this car on a unsuspecting public. You buy a brand new car then find out you bought a buffet for rodents! d. H. Olds - hollis, maine USA.
Soy based components attracting mice that cause damage to wiring, filters, and even blower motor. If the critters eat thru airbag wiring this could be catastrophic.
Two occurrences of rodent damage to soy based wiring of car engine and chewing on air bags while parked in the garage. . Futhermore, I have a 1998 Chevrolet malibu that has been parked in the garage for 14 years and a 1996 Toyota corolla that was parked in the garage for 9 years without and damage to wiring. Cost of two repairs $3500. First damage February 24, 2016 and second August 10, 2017.

I had a very troubling issue with my 2000 Toyota solara last week. The wiring to the inside fan blower motor overheated, was smoking badly and nearly started a fire in the cabin of the car. Luckily I stopped the car before things got out of hand. I had the wiring and the very badly corroded resistor replaced (p/n 20238) at a cost to me of $254. 07. Does NHTSA have this issue on record as a safety recall?.

The only thing I noticed before this incident happened was the passenger side window stopped working a month before and that same week I noticed my bright lights would not turn on. Then on 3/18/10 my 2007 Toyota Camry caught on fire while driving. I turned on car as I was driving I started to smell smoke. I looked down and seen smoke coming out of the drivers side window switch. By the time I was able to pull over, park and open my car door park flames started coming out of the drivers side door panel. Due to my vehicle warranty being expired the Toyota dealership made me go threw my insurance company refusing to even touch the car. I was told that the fire was the first of that kind that they have heard of. I was told the fire started by the wiring in the door but what caused the wiring to catch on fire. They told me that all the wiring in the door and the door panel is being replaced. As of now the dealership is holding the parts until Toyota product liability claims department contacts them.
The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Camry. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, he noticed a foreign piece of rubber foam on the ground near the vehicle. The check engine warning light illuminated on the warning panel upon starting the vehicle and remained illuminated. The dealer stated that the electrical wiring had been gnawed on by a rodent. The dealer repaired the vehicle. The failure mileage was 27,945 and the current mileage was 28,000.
The contact owns a 2007 Toyota solara. He stated that while starting the vehicle he heard clicking noises from the starter and the vehicle would not start. The contact was able to jump start the battery so that he could drive it to the dealer. The dealer diagnosed the vehicle stating that it was the ignition wire that was touching the 2nd wire causing an open circuit draw, they explained that it was in a protective harness and that this should have never happened and that this is a manufacturer defect. There were repairs which included a replacement battery and the ignition wire harness which was repaired as well at the owners expense. The failure mileage was 24753 and current mileage was 24803. Updated 01/29/10. Updated 02/01/jb.
After starting the car the drivers airbag light stays on. When the car is started again the light may not be on. This went on for 3 days. The Toyota dealership hooked up the car to read any codes that were there. After 3 days at the dealership the field rep states that a new seat and floor wiring has to be purchased. There is a short in the floor wiring. Total will cost $3450. The drivers seat has to be replaced along with the wiring. If not replaced the airbag will not go off.

Car hesitated badly on acceleration. At first the dealer said it was because of the way the accelerator was connected through a wire to the computer, but was a safety issue ,and needed to be investigated by the federal government if necessary. I will state my dealer was now trying to rectify the issue because it has also effected the gas mileage, and a see it as a safety hazard. If necessary I will contact the attorney general of my home state because I see this as a non perfected piece of equipment put upon the public .
After 4985 miles, the "check engine" light activated. There was a smell of burning electrical wires. Dealer/service originally diagnosed the problem as a failure of the "variable valve timing actuator," but later re-diagnosed the problem as a failure of the wiring harness. The car was returned 11/30/06. After 20 minutes of driving, the "check engine" light reactivated. I returned the car immediately. On 12/01/06, the dealer/service diagnosed the problem and said a "vacuum tube" disconnected. I picked up car on 12/01/06. After a couple hours of driving, the "p" for park light illuminated while I was in drive. (the "p" and "d" indicators were both illuminated as I was driving. Also, the door locks on all doors engaged and disengaged uncontrollably and continuously. I was not able to manually lock or unlock my car doors using the "lock/unlock" switch on the drive-side door since it was deactivated as a result of the malfunction. I took the car back to the dealer/service on 12/02/06 for this problem. Dealer/service diagnoses the problem as a electrical short due to a coolant leak. I was promised that the car would be returned 12/4/06 afternoon.
O2 sensors failed due to rodents or rabbits chewing the plastic wiring housing the internal electrical wires. O2 sensors had to be replaced at a cost of about $600. The outside coatings or sheaths for the wiring is made of a soy based plastic, and possibly containing a "fish oil" in the sheath, which attracts rodents and rabbits, and they chew on the plastic wire coverings, thereby destroying the O2 sensor's wiring mechanism. This problem is prevalent in the denver and mountain states areas and should be corrected as the problem could lead to engine fires or engine failures. The wiring housing should be changed to a "retardant" type of wiring to prevent other incidents of this problem, and not just for Toyota but for all manufacturers.
My chek enigne light came on when I was headed out for a 250 mile trip. I took it to the dealer and got theis list of problems. Timing belt replacment, water pump, reseal oil pan, replace engine pipe, transmission gasket and filter replacement oxygen sensor, a/f sensor, efi service, cam seal, crank seal, oil pump seal . Blue smoke coming from exhaust. I went on line and realized that I had oil sludge. Called toyaota, they told me to get it evaluated for oil sludge.

Myself along with my 16 year old brother, son 9, and daughter 5 were driving Sunday morning on our way to san diego to attend the padre game when suddenly on the highway 15 we heard a load pop, so I proceded to get off on the adams off ramp, when my lil. Brother screamed it's a fire! and he dashed out getting my daughter out while I struggled to get my son out the car then someone pulled over told us to get in the car and as we drove to the top of the off ramp my car exploded, no crash nothing had it not been for my lil. Brother thinking fast who knows what would have happed, my car was and is still under Toyotas warranty. I'm waiting to see why this happened this should not have happened!! my family shouldn't have had to go through this. I hope that Toyota and my insurance company handle this ASAP!.
My 2003 Camry had been great since the date of purchase. Only had 2 problems with the car, one minor the other was major. I have 25000 miles on the car, and both the front tires were bare. I was able to see all the treads from the tires. The major problem I got was my Camry caught on fire and melted the entire engine. I'd pulled up to the parking lot at work, and 20 minutes later, I was notified that my engine was on fire. Spoke with fire department and they said it looks like faulty/malfunction wire/cables. Not sure if Toyota knows of this, but now I'm left w/o a car until m insurance figures everything out. Toyota should be notify in case there was a defect in the 2003 models.

Electrical system wiring malfunctioned. This resulted in all electrical operated components failing and being inoperative, while driving. There was breakage of the wires that occurred in the wire pack which crossed between the side of the trunk and the hinge of the trunk cover at the point where the wires were flexed due to the opening/closing of the trunk cover. The problem was not immediately found due to no visible deterioration or damage to the wire pack covering at or near the point of breakage. The broken wires were ultimately found by using a faulty locator device. The problem occurred after the items were placed in the trunk, the cover closed and the vehicle was in motion. Both the front and rear side windows(which were closed at the time)could not be lowered, the sunroof (opened at the time)could not be closed, the speedometer, tachometer, and engine temperature indicators were all inoperative.

The insured was informed that her parked vehicle was on fire, the estimator stated that the fire originated from the headlight wiring harness or receiver dehydrator, the Toyota dealer stated that the fire may have been intentional and they could not attribute the problem as being engine or electrical related. (claim#53-c781-583).
Inadequte strain relief on cable leading from chassis to trunk lid allowed/caused excessive strain on wires leading to multiple insulation failures. Furthermore, some strands of at least one wire broke, protruded, and possibly shorted to another wire causing the fuse for that circuit to blow. This caused the tail lights, license plate lights, and parking lights to be off, a safety hazard for night /dusk/dawn driving conditions. I am reporting this on behalf of my father who is the owner of the vehicle. I would appreciate being cc'd on any correspondence at edscargot@aol. Com.
The unreliable brakes on my car are my gravest concern of the several problems Ive had. The electrical problems with this car began only one month into ownership. These problems were mostly corrected by a rewire that was done in October 1999. Occasionally, though, a window wont open still. The brakes first failed in the winter of 00-01, and I took the car in for service. The dealership could not replicate the problem. I continued to drive the car, since the problem rarely occurred. It became more frequent and pronounced, however. Eventually in July 2001, I slid through an intersection on a hot sunny day on dry roads. I was convinced the car was not performing properly. At this point (August 2001), it is unsteady enough on good roads that I brake with extreme caution at all times. Twice, now, in the last week the abs has engaged when the brakes were not engaged once during acceleration, once when completing a stop (that started at about 15 mph). The third dealership I contacted listened to the problem carefully and then explained to me that the car was performing exactly as designed, and this safety feature (the abs) was designed to protect from loss of control. I can certainly control the direction of the car well when its skidding, but I consider the ability to reduce speed an equally important element of control. If a child on a tricycle crossed unexpectedly in front of me, I am almost certain the car could not be stopped in time to avoid an accident, no matter how slowly I was going. The abs takes over even at very low speeds (0-15mph), tripling my stopping distance on the driest, smoothest roads. I know this would be a compelling suit coming from the attorney of a cripple, but I am only interested in being safe and alive. This car is unsafe, and I am exasperated at Toyotas refusal to take responsibility for the problem.
Dates of service for the same problem: 7/17/96, 7/29/96, 9/06/96, 9/20/96, 11/02/96, 07/10/97,10/06/97 dealer turned off engine light but problem was only temporarily fixed. 5/14/98 is the most recent date when engine light illuminated & turned off by itself 3 days later, therefore 5/14/98 occurrence was not brought in for service. Dealer had concluded the cause to be several things. Their first diagnosis was that the light being set off by electrical malfunction in alarm wiring (alarm was installed by the same dealer), the next diagnosis was it was due to bad charcoal cannister for which the parts were specially ordered & car was brought in for service from date 9/12/96 to 9/19/96. The problem was shortly fixed for the engine light went on again and car was brought in again on 11/02/96. It was a hassle to keep bringing in the car only to have the engine light on 1-2 weeks later. I have been giving up on this problem (ie bringing in to the dealer). The problem still exists. I just ignore it& the light would go off by itself which is equivalent to the result of my dealer's service, only ignoring it saves me time & energy. Dealer keeps telling me it's not dangerous and keep bringing the car in whenever this happens again.
