Looseness and noise in intermediate steering shaft. Occurs when temperatures above 75 degrees or when vehicle warm from operation. Feeling of loose connection in steering linkage felt in steering wheel. Metal against metal noises heard also. 2 Steering Linkages problem of the 2004 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 04/11/2005

I heard and felt a noise on my steering wheel on my 2004 Toyota Camry an when I took it to the dealer they said that I needed a steering shaft/intermediate shaft. I happened to check the web and found that other people were having the same problem and that there was a TSB on this problem. Also that there was a new shaft made to remedy this situation. I have contacted the dealer and the manufacturer which in turn had the dealer contact me. The service manager told me that they could not fix it since it was out of warranty. He said that if it had 39,000 miles they would probably repair but since I had 60,000 they would not. He did offered me a goodwill gesture of 15% off the cost. My contention is that this was a known issued, and since this has to do with a safety issue such as the steering why wasn't something done before having come to this. The car runs out of warranty and people have to pay for something that they knew about and is a safety issue I also took it to an independent automobile repair shop to see what they thought and they told me that they believe that the noise was coming from the shaft and steering gear box. They did repair a vehicle of someone who 's car was out of warranty but only a few hundred miles over the expiration of the warranty.

5 Steering Linkages problem of the 1999 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 09/24/2000

There is a sqeak coming from the front end when I go over small bumps/dips in the road. Toyota recommended the replacement of tie rods, which did absolutely nothing. The noise continues and has increased in severity. The air conditioner smells when using it. It smells like mold. I have taken it to the dealer, but all they do is spray it with frigi-fresh, which only masks the smell for a short while.

8 Steering Linkages problem of the 1998 Toyota Camry

Car drifts to left at all speeds. Reported to dealer twice. 1st time, on 7/20/98 at 3,300 miles. Dealer claimed steering wheel was off center and they realigned it. Also, dealer stated that air pressure was uneven in all tires and they corrected this. When I picked up the car, they had put 32 lbs in the left front tire, 30 lbs in the right front tire, and 34 lbs in the two rear tires. Complained immediately that the car still drifted to the left. Dealer rescheduled for 8/10/98 and car was then serviced with 3,955 miles. Dealer claimed they checked front end alignment and then rotated tires to correct for a radial pull. The dealer would not replace the tires and stated they would correct themselves after a few hundred miles were put on with the new rotation. Tires were then rotated by the same dealer at 9,824 miles on 3/10/99, and the drift to the left is as bad as ever. I believe something other than a radial pull is wrong.
