2005 Toyota Corolla. Consumer writes in regards to passenger side airbag safety recall.
A month ago I received a recall notice from Toyota for the front passenger side airbag, alerting me that it is unsafe to transport passengers in the car at this time. This is exceptionally inconvenient, as I have a chronically ill partner who needs to be driven to doctor's appointments, etc. I am writing to complain about what I believe is an unreasonable amount of time for the company to supply the part.
The remedy for the defective passenger side air bags is not within a reasonable time. The recall was known may 13, 2015 and the parts to correct are still not available. How long does it take to correct this error??? it is most annoying to not be able to use my front passenger seat. I am loosing my faith in Toyota. A Toyota owner since 1977.
Takata recall my son hit by inflated driver side air bag on 18th dec2014 at university of houston resulted due to passenger side tire hit the curb right side of road curb . This may happen due to passenger side front tire blew after hitting the curb ( guess) because car passenger end strut touched the curb and got damaged . It also damaged the fire wall . The car was with normal in campus speed 25 mph . Tires were new & had replaced just three months before accident . Police called 911 & he has been transported to st. Joseph hospital , downtown - houston due to sever injuries due to air bag inflate . I was shocked due to deep cut on his forehead , few facial cuts & fractured nose . I called Toyota customer center in first week on Jan 2015 to inform about air bag injury & investigate probable cause , but they denied and told me such injury can take place due air bag impact . My intention was to avoid such injuries to all others but no positive response I received from Toyota . In 1st week of July 2017 , I received the notice about recall of air bag at my previous resident address . After reading the notice , I got shocked because of Toyota's stand in 2015 . I called Toyota & asked them to investigate the matter but the case manger informed that the recall is associated with passenger side air bag & nothing to do driver side air bag . Attached case number & letter for your reference . I haven't heard back from them , need to resolve the issue . Car is still running without driver end air bag .
Tl-the contact owns a 2005 Toyota Corolla. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 14v350000 (air bags). The vehicle was taken to a dealer. The technician disconnected the front passenger's side air bag as a temporary remedy due to the part not being available to repair the vehicle. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was notified of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. Oo.
I received a letter from Toyota that my passenger side air bag needed to be replaced. I called the dealer and made an appointment. I was told it would take about an hour and a half to complete the work. 20 min. Later I was told that the work would not be done because I didn't live in an area that needed a new airbag. I asked why I got the letter then. I was told they would contact Toyota and give me an answer within 24 hours. I did not hear from them. This last week I got a call from Toyota to tell me that I needed to take my car in to a dealer and have the passenger side airbag replaced. I told the person what had happened before. She assured me that this time the work would be done. She connected me to the dealer and I made the appointment. I took the car in. They called me and told me they needed the car for a longer time due to some communication problems with Toyota. I picked up my car after the service department had closed. I called the next day and asked why the work hadn't been done. They said they didn't have the part needed to do the replacement. They have had my car twice for the same recall and I still don't have the problem taken care of. I feel they should not have made an appointment if they did not have the part. I feel that they are giving me the run around and have no intention of replacing the airbag.
Vehicle was traveling 15-25 mph with moderate to heavy traffic 2 lane road around 1:15pm with dry clear conditions. Second vehicle attempting to cross road collided with first vehicle in the left rear fender causing the first vehicle to rotate 180 degrees to collide with a third vehicle breaking the front axle of the first vehicle, side airbags deployed but did not inflate. First vehicle totaled. 1 injury(passenger),cuts to ear requiring 8 stitches & shoulder injured due to secondary impact.
Here I report an accident which may be caused by Toyota unintended accelerate problem. We bought 2005 Toyota Corolla sport on July 09, 2004. We drive 2000-3000 miles/ per year. As we bought 5 years pre-paid maintenance, we have regular maintenance service with faulkner dealer every half year until July 09, 2009. There has no big problems during the first 3-year warranty period except on around summer of 2007, the check engine light is on and Toyota dealer replaced the computer control system without charge (were not sure the replaced computer name and we think the dealer should have record). The weather condition is light-medium rain while our car accident happened. When the accident happened, my 5-year old son and I were in the car. The road speed limit is 25 miles per hour, I drove under the speed limit at a local road and it is about 2-3 miles distance to our destination. I remembered that I reduced the speed around a curve to turn on another road. Suddenly I heard a loud roaring engine sound came from inside, even I pressed and pressed the brake pedal for several times, but I feel that I step on the air, it didn't help. The car automatically accelerated with the speed I cant control and I lost the control of the steering wheel, my car was in malfunction status and crashed to the right curb and then hit the bush with a high speed and trapped in wet mud (thank for god). The engine was still roaring with a scared loud sound for minutes till I turned off the ignition and took off the key. Our car was damaged seriously by this accident, our car insurance company paid for more than $7,000 for the repair of this damage and I paid $1,000 for this collision. We kept both the police and repair record in case you required. At that time we didn't realize this accident may be caused by the unintended accelerate problem which recalled . Because our car computer system was replaced by dealer in 2007, we may still faced the recalled problem.
I was driving (in area where apparently a lot of accidents happen at this particular intersection) and I came to a stop sign - could only turn right or left. . . Looked left - saw no one, then looked right - saw a truck way in the distance. . . So I accelerated to make a left turn and boom! I was hit on the drivers side (the side where I saw no one) - never saw it coming, car was completely totaled, and my left clavicle was broken in 5 places. Side air bag never deployed, front air bag never deployed and not sure if I hit my head. . . But I lost consciousness for a little while. I didn't think to report it - nor did I realize that it was a problem, until now when I'm researching cars and saw that someone else had this same incident/problem. I will call Toyota and report it ASAP.
The contact's vehicle was t-boned by another vehicle at 40 mph. Upon impact, the side impact airbags did not deploy. The vehicle was hit on the driver's side door. The vehicle was totaled. A police report taken at the scene. The contact sustained bruises, concussions, and sprains from head to legs. She contacted the manufacturer, and they claimed the airbags did not deploy due to the speed and angle at which she was hit.
The contact owns a 2005 Toyota Corolla. While driving at 65 mph the vehicle hit a steel ramp that had been left by another vehicle. The impact was strong enough to total the vehicle. Tupon impact, the air bags I did not deploy. The vehicle was equipped with the driver and passenger side air bags. The vehicle has not been inspected to determine why the air bags did not deploy. The manufacturer has not been contacted to inform them of the incident.
My son was driving a new (6 months old, with less than 400 miles) 2005 Toyota Corolla, when he was struck on the driver's side fender & wheel. While the driver's side airbag deployed, the side airbag failed to deploy- resulting in a fractured left clavicle. He was wearing his seatbelt.
