Toyota Highlander owners have reported 4 problems related to loud engine noise (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Toyota Highlander based on all problems reported for the Highlander.
With 300miles on Highlander started to experience issues in driving and drop in performance. Performance was very significant especially noticeable in mpg. At scenarios when the car would not drive up the hill but rev to max and start rolling back with clicking noise. Toyota was send to service many times after to multiple Toyota dealerships but they did not have any diagnosis. At 15k miles on the car driving on highway (70mph) the Highlander lost power and started loud noise. When pulled over found oil smell and smoke from engine. During examination found 3 cylinder went loose. During that time one of them came off the side and hit the transmission. Almost a full month the Highlander was rebuilt but no final word what had happened by Toyota corp. The car is about 17k miles and started to act the same way. As a family we are afraid to drive the car especially my pregnant wife with children. I am afraid this may happen again and can lock up all wheels and can result in massive accident. Toyota is not taking this as serious and seems to me they do not care. As of right now the Highlander has problems with alignment, lane assist, and lack of power. Please see pictures.

Driving down roadway when a loud noise was heard in the engine, followed by check oil light to illuminate shortly after. Drove to nearest automotive repair site for service fearing more damage to engine by driving farther. Mechanic discovered oil line (previously repaired under recall) had burst and emptied all oil onto roadway. Previous repair, done under specs of recall, didn't hold up and required another repair. Toyota dealership called due to recall being performed there prior. Because it was completed to specs, no further assistance was offered. Repair completed with metal (not rubber) tubing and paid for out of pocket by driver. Fire risk noted since oil sprayed underneath car, onto back of car and onto roadway.

Tl - the contact owns a 2012 Toyota Highlander. The contact stated that while driving approximately 35 mph and steering to the right, the engine suddenly emitted an abnormal noise. The contact also stated that the headlights would not shut off intermittently when powering off the vehicle. In addition, the defroster for the rear window would not function properly, causing the windows to remain foggy for a long period of time. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing where the technician advised that there were no failures. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and advised the contact that the vehicle was not included in any recalls. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 1,000 and the current mileage was 3,300. Kmj.

2004, my Highlander was serviced for gel in the valve seals. On April 2, my car was brought to leith Toyota because the car made a loud noise after being cranked and the oil light was on. As I drove a couple of miles, all computer lights came on and the car cut off. I was told testing was done and I had oil although it was not being pumped to the engine for some reason. (I have oil changed every 3,000 miles). The next day, I went to check on the progress and the service manager told me they drove the car around and it never cut off and he really did not know what was wrong with it. I decided to take it to another mechanic to find out and 10 miles away, the engine blew up. Now, I have no car to drive and I am a single mom that has to work. I feel that the service manager should have been honest with me regarding Toyota's past engine defects and to drive my car would be fatal. After having it towed to another Toyota dealership to check for oil sludge and requesting that my mechanic be present when dropping the oil pan, they told me that was not necessary and did it without calling me first. I have lost all future trust with this company and fell that their"hush hush recall" should have been made public.
