Heat shield hanger assembly failed and now heat shield vibrates against exhaust pipe making terrible noise. This is a very common problem as researched on the net. Toyota needs to fix this free.

2006 Toyota Matrix, 50,000 miles. Heat shield rearmost hanger assembly failed. Loud rattle as shield rested on exhaust pipe. Temporary fix: wire from tank strap around shield to keep shield from resting on pipe. Plastic hanger assembly split, captive nut separated, shield dropped to pipe. I regard it as a design flaw. Plastic was supposed to provide pressure to hold nut in place as well as to support load. Evidence of long term cracking, dirt in crack surfaces. Estimate to repair from dealer, $100, possibly includes both labor and parts cost. Otherwise, is a good product, take to dealer every 5000 miles for appropriate maintenance.
1/2 heat shield dropped onto top of exhaust pipe making a loud horrible noise.
Exhaust fumes in 2009 Toyota Matrix. Leakage is especially apparent after wide-open-throttle (wot) acceleration. The nox emissions formed during wot can be smelled in the car. Under other operating mods, the fumes are less noticeable or not noticeable. This is an ongoing problem; so "incident date" below is today's date.

My 2004 Toyota Matrix at 87,000 now needs a new catalytic converter. The check engine light came on and I took it in to be diagnosed. P0420 was the code. Warranty for this part is for 80,000 miles. The cost to replace this part is 1300. 00 by the dealer. A new Toyota replacement catalytic converter is being installed today. My mechanic states that this is a known problem with toytoa Matrixes and that Toyota should be replacing these. I keep my cars for a really long time (last car 310,000 miles) and have never had to replace a catalytic converter. This is not a part that should need replacing at 87,000 miles. I am so disappointed in the so called reliability of Toyota's and really disappointed in their customer service. I called and submitted a complaint to Toyotausa and was basically told that this was obviously not a problem or Toyota would have recalled these already. Obviously, Toyota does not keep track of their customer maintenance records and complaints or they would know that this is a chronic issue on 2003-2004 Matrixes.

My check engine light came on, and the local Toyota dealership charged me about $50 to tell me my catalytic converter needed replacement at a cost of over $1,000 for my 2003 Matrix with about 92,000 miles. Seemed unlikely, so I took it to a local non-Toyota repair shop, his computer also showed catalytic converter, but he said the way the car was performing, it might be the oxygen sensors. He replaced both, and the car has been great ever since. Too bad my local Toyota dealer wanted to gauge me.
