Toyota Matrix owners have reported 9 problems related to engine stall (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
The contact owns a 2003 Toyota Matrix. While driving 15 mph, the engine stalled and the check engine warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was able to restart on the second attempt; however, the failure recurred. The first time the vehicle was diagnosed the dealer was unable to determine the failure and disengaged the check engine warning sensor. The failure recurred and the vehicle was taken to a second dealer. It was diagnosed that the seal on the fuel cap failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The VIN was excluded from NHTSA campaign number: 10v384000 (engine and engine cooling). The failure continued. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 145,000.

Multiple episodes of engine stall without warning. Instrument panel goes black and complete loss of power. A few times it sputtered and bucked before it stalled. Have had it in to Toyota twice now. The first time they were able to replicate the malfunction and said it was a loose fuse. I picked up the car and it stalled again while driving another 4 times. In the middle of a busy intersection with my toddler grandson in the back seat. Another time I was coming out of a dark tunnel with a blind turn doing approx 55mph and only by the grace of god did somebody not plow into the back of me. It could have been deadly. The car is back in the Toyota dealership and has been there for 4 weeks. The service department says they can't perform any repairs if they are unable to replicate the malfunction. I am left wondering if the 2005-2008 recalls for this very issues should indeed be expanded to include the 2009 as well.

On humid mornings, engine occasionally misses on start up then clears. Engine stalled with no warning and almost caused a rear end collision when it suddenly lost power on acceleration onto busy road. Next morning engine would not start until later in day after warming up. It started with extreme miss then cleared. The 08 Matrix has an ecm recall for same reason however no notice was received for the 09 model manufactured on 5/08.
We bought the car used in GA August 2012, 3 months later the engine would come on but electrics wouldnt, wouldnt move out of park. The dealer couldnt re create the problem to find out what was wrong so we delt with it for months until the power shut off on the hwy. It scared us. It quickly shut back on thank god but we been in touch with corporate and the dealership without any luck or help on fixing it. Finally July they said it was the ecm and tried to charge us to fix it. 3 weeks later the stalling continued. We were sent here by a friend and just now 2 years later find out about the recall. We also found out the same dealership where we took to fix it that couldnt identify the problem was the same one that fixed it initially for the recall. Now corporate and the dealership is denying that they fixed the ecm in July though I have an invoice stating so. Also, denying there was ever a recall. Its dangerous and terrifying to drive not knowing when and where the engine will stall. It was fixed 2012 a few months before we bought it, fixed again this passed July supposedly but is still stalling so its a reoccuring problem. Hopfully the proper procedure is followed to ensure the safety of my family and who ever the next owner will be.

The contact owned a 2005 Toyota Matrix. The contact stated that while driving at speeds of 65 mph, the vehicle accelerated without warning. The vehicle decreased in speed as the contact removed his foot from the accelerator pedal. The dealer could not duplicate the failure. The contact confirmed that the vehicle had been taken to the dealer on nine separate occasions with concerns of unintended acceleration. The dealer could not determine the cause of failure. The vehicle was left in possession of the dealer. The contact would not drive the vehicle any longer due to concerns for his safety while operating the vehicle. The approximate failure mileage was 25,000 and the current mileage was 25,000. Updated 5/12/10 the consumer stated when the speed was set at 55 mph, the speed would fluctuate from 51 mph uphill to 59-60 mph downhill. When starting from a stop, the engine would either stall or spin the wheels. At times, the engine would not respond when trying to increase speed. During very cold winter days, the engine would stumble and at times buck like a bronco with the gas pedal to the floor until the engine was warmed up. Updated 06/18/10.
2009 Toyota Matrix with 1. 8 l engine stalls at intersections. Dealer very resistant to admitting to the problem, but allegedly "reset" control module, resulting in less frequency of occurrence. Potentially very dangerous situation as not possible to predict when stall will occur and more likely in intersections. Stalling occurred numerous times, especially from 8000 to 10000 miles. Vehicle currently at approximately 19000 miles and has occasional stalls.
Engine stalled in my 2006 Toyota Matrix. Fortunately I was driving very slow and was able to safely pull out. The dealer made a repair and told me that this was a computer problem.
