I took delivery of my 2016 Prius in January 2016. At he time of delivery, the speedometer displayed mph, however the owner's manual indicated this could be changed to kph via a simple user interface on the dashboard. I have since learned that such a change is not possible for my car, as it was manufactured early in the 2016 model year production run. The inability to adjust from mph to kph makes it difficult or impossible to correctly follow the posted speed limits when I visit canada. This represents a safety issue which should be remedied.

When attempting to shift the vehicle into drive or reverse the transmission selection will revert to neutral within a few seconds. The problem occurs multiple times even after tuning off all accessories and restarting the vehicle. In some cases it requires that the transmission joystick selector lever be held manually in the d position to continue driving. The problem also occurs at low speed, I. E after turning onto a street from a stopped position of the transmission will pop out of gear into neutral. The problem is intermittent and has occurred a few times over the past year.

The rubber cover on the rear hatch door latch / switch has degraded and melted. It is impossible to open the rear hatch and to access my spare tire, making this a safety hazard. There is no manual way to release the hatch. . Read more...

I pulled up to a car wash and once I was on the track I tried to put the vehicle into neutral and it would not work. The automatic car wash track started to try to pull the vehicle forward. As im franctically trying to make it go into neutral, the vehicle started to hop off the track and was getting violently thrashed around as it was getting pulled forward causing the person running the wash to have to manually hit a panic button to stop it. Fortunelty there was no damage to either the vehicle or the car wash but it is very disturbing that it would not work. It took several employees to be able to figure out how it worked. It should be simple. . . It's not!!! way to complicated and I'm still not 100% sure after trying to put it in neutral how it works. It just sometimes will go into neutral after trying it over and over. . . . Very unsafe.

While returning from work at 5:30 pm, 02/18/14 on highway 90 west to albany, NY, with cruise control set to 50 mph, the accelerator pedal got stuck on my 2010 Toyota Prius. The pedal did not return back to its original position even when I turned off cruise control. I spontaneously tapped the accelerator pedal in the hope of releasing but did not yield any results and the vehicle maintained its speed. Applying brakes made no effect and did not curtail the car. It continued to move with almost the same speed even when brake pedal depressed. I had no control on my car in one of busiest freeways. I continuously applied the brakes and tried to merge to the right most lane with hazard blinkers on. It took more than 5 miles panic ride trying to avoid trucks and other cars to merge to the right lane. Even with the brake fully depressed, the 2010 Prius did not slow down and I managed to reach the shoulder lane which had gravel & snow. Then I pressed park button and switched off the engine by pressing the power button. I could feel the wheels lock up but the Prius continued to move with strong rubber burning smell. Finally, I engaged the parking breaks to stop it from moving into the freeway. After complete stop, with difficulty I manually pulled up the accelerator pedal. This entire ordeal was shocking and an unbelievable narrow escape from a major catastrophic event. I thanked god & called 911 and the highway patrol police came to the spot and promptly helped to move the vehicle and myself from the freeway traffic. The 2010 Toyota Prius was moved to Toyota dealer service center where I purchased the car & performed every scheduled maintenance service punctually. Incidentally the last service and certification was in 12/2013. It is obvious that even regular dealer maintenance service and certification did not help this vehicle. Report filed with Toyota motor customer service.

Gear pops back to neutral from driving or reversing as I started my Toyota Prius 2006 car from my driveway, I put it in reverse and it came halfway to the road and then stopped. I noticed that the gear shift lever had, on its own, shifted back to neutral. I then put the car in drive and tried to accelerate back into the driveway of my home. The car's gear shift lever again moved to neutral. The only way I could move the car back to the driveway was by holding the lever in the drive position manually. I tried the car on my street's small block, but found that the gear kept shifting back to neutral, everytime I let go of the drive or reverse position. In other words, I had to keep the gear in d position manually with one hand to drive around. I feel this is a dangerous situation where the attention is diverted from the road to the gear shift lever every few seconds to see if the gear is in the drive position. I called Toyota today and informed them of this situation.

Starting my vehicle and leaving my garage at 2 mph the master warning light, check hybrid system light, and malfunction indicator/check engine light were all lit up. With a terrible smell electrical/fuel. I immediately shut the car off and let it sit. After a few seconds I tried again with the same result. The owners manual says to not drive and contact Toyota dealer immediately. When the tow truck arrived I again tried to start the vehicle and the warnings were not present. The dealer investigated and said it was over ethanol in the fuel. The fuel has been tested and found to be 6-8%, which is acceptable. The dealer at the time of the repair wanted $450 to drop and clean the tank. Instead I chose to go with the phillips Toyota (leesburg florida, phone 352-728-2030) dealer service manager, david newton to the closest gas station and fill up. Since then there has not been a problem, but I am concerned for my safety in now driving the vehicle. As this is a hybrid which I purchased to help our country with energy security (56 mpg) but am afraid as a retiree with my wife that this could have ended differently if we were on the interstate traveling. With the reputation of Toyota and the unexpected acceleration we are concerned that the initial problem has not been found and will recur. This could happen on the interstate highway with a much different outcome. I am reporting this to go on record with this problem just in case an accident or fatality is involved the next time, if it happens again. Thank-you and I can email my file which has been sent to shellcustomercare@shell. Com under their reference#[xxx], and florida division of consumer services, [xxx]. I have also requested a meeting with the Toyota corporation representative through the dealer service mgr. [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. Started my 2004 Toyota Prius and placed vehicle into reverse to back out of parking space at daughter's school. Car died while backing, blocking traffic, and would not restart. Orange light glowed on the starter button. This is 7:45pm. Called original dealer in washington PA for advice. No help. Looked in owner's manual for advice. No help. Called local dealer in charlottesville va. No help. A male teacher opened the hood and fuse cover to ensure that all fuses were snug and secure. Nothing. After about 30 minutes, the car finally reset its self, the starter button went green and when tried the car started. Told the local dealer of this incident and they denied any knowledge of any trouble like this. Coinsidently, my gps system had failed just a couple of days prior to this incident. It took a month to get it replaced.
