2 Engine problem of the 2008 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 01/22/2011

At approximately 11:15am Saturday January 22, I was stoppped at a stop light on spit brook road in nashua nh for about 30 seconds, when my leased Toyota Rav4l suddenly reved it's engine and started to move forward. As it did, I pressed on the brake as hard as I could, and the car continued to rev the engine and suddenly jumped forward hitting the car that was about 6 feet in front of me. At that time, I put the car in park, stopped the engine and checked to see if the woman in the car ahead of me was hurt. She was not. Her car had no damage to it. She went on her way. There is minor damage to the from end of the Rav4, including the bumper and grill. I got back into the car, and took it to the Toyota dealer in nashua nh, that was a mile or 2 away, and explained to them what happened. They tried to blame this on the floor mat issue, and then tried to blame it on me, saying that they think my boot might have been on the accelerator. I told them that was not the case. The car was stopped for about 30 seconds when it suddenly reved the engine and accelerated into the car ahead of me. The car was left at the dealer for them to take a look at on Monday January 24th, 2011. They told me that they would look into it and get back to me.

5 Engine problem of the 2006 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 03/17/2010

Toyota: limited service campaign for vvt-I oil line this is how Toyota handles this issue I own a 2006 Rav4 sport with the 2gr-fe v6 engine. The car was serviced on 3/17/2010 for the limited service campaign related with the vvt-I actuator oil supply hose - or it should have been. The issue is that the metal-rubber-metal oil line part #15707-31030 has been replaced with the metal-rubber-metal part #15757-31030 (a palliative fix), instead of part #15772-31030 oil pipe metal that is made entirely from metal and fits the 2gr-fe v6 engines manufactured after April 2008. Also on the invoice that was released, the limited service campaign for the vvt-I actuator oil supply hose shows up as 90k oil cooler hose (rav4) that is not the same thing with actuator supply hose. I have discussed with the service manager and he agreed that the metal oil supply line has a better design, but he refused to perform the replacement with the metal component because accordingly with the VIN, this is what should be used. As an engineer with more than 20 years experience I believe that this recall has not been addressed in a technically sound manner and I would like to have the car serviced with the correct all metal oil pipe part #15772-31030. I believe that this fix do not solve the problem, but delays the failure of the oil line that can cause the seizure of the engine in matter of minutes. This definitely is a serious safety risk.

6 Engine problem of the 2002 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 03/14/2010

The contact owns a 2002 Toyota Rav4. On March 14, 2010, the contact was driving at approximately 20-25 mph when she depressed the accelerator pedal and the engine suddenly began to rev. The vehicle would also not shift into gear. She noticed the problem started to occur on an intermittent basis following the initial failure. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealership where she was informed that the electronic control module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired at that time. The failure mileage was 73,747. The current mileage was approximately 73,800.

7 Engine problem of the 2008 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 02/19/2010

Idle speed kicked up unexpectedly at a stop light. The engine was close to full operating temperature, about 1. 5 miles from home. The air conditioning was not on. The defroster was also not on, so there was no reason for the idle to kick up. Vehicle was stopped at a light behind another vehicle at an intersection. It lurched forward, but was easy to hold back with the brake. I then put my left foot on the brake and released my right foot to be sure that both brake and accelerator were not being pressed simultaneously. The high idle continued, about 1100 rpm in drive. I then put the vehicle in neutral and the tachometer read 1300-1400 initially, then slowly dropped to about 1000. Once back in drive it dropped to about 800 rpm, which is normal operation. It has never done this before or since. That particular intersection has power lines and/or transformers that have interfered with my am radio in other vehicles, but not this one.

8 Engine problem of the 2006 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 02/01/2010

The accelerator is very twitchy. On one occasion, about a month ago, the accelerator stuck in our parking area. I immediately put the vehicle into neutral and averted an accident.

9 Engine problem of the 2009 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 01/09/2010

New Toyota electronics problems my Rav4 sometimes does have intermittent accelerator sticking problems, even though the accelerator pedal has fully returned to idle conditions. During the winter I often where sorels. I thought that because of my boots I was hitting both the brake and accelerator. One time I even had to push the transmission into neutral to make a stop, cursing the Toyota designer who put the brake pedal so close to the accelerator (another pedal design flaw?). From then on I was very careful to keep my foot on just one pedal. However, I still noticed problems sometimes, and now this "pseudo recall" has solved a dilemma I had. The problem is not with unintended acceleration, it is with impaired deceleration. The engine is fighting against the braking system because the engine does not return to idle soon enough. With the old manual accelerator linkage systems, you could feel when you let off the gas. Now instead the computer is deciding how to slow the engine. This is where the problem lies. What "bone headed" Toyota engineer allowed both the accelerator and brake to work at the same time on a "drive by wire" system? there is no mechanical linkage to undo, so hitting the brake should defeat the accelerator (I. E. Quickly return the engine to idle mode). That is all that was needed to prevent this problem. This is at least one problem with the Toyota electronic throttle system. It is a Toyota myth to insist there is(are) no electronic problem(s). What other more complex problems are there in the electronics, if this basic problem was not accounted for?.

11 Engine problem of the 2007 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 11/21/2009

I bought the brand new 2007 Rav4 limited v6 from chicago grossinger Toyota 2 and 1/2 years ago. There was some boiling water noise coming out from the engine at around 28k miles. I took the Rav4 to the cgt dealer for repair since it was still under the warranty. The customer service rep. Told me that the reason why the engine had some boiling water noise because the camshaft was bended. He lied! he didn't even tell me that the oil hose was the cause of the damage. The noise problem was fixed (hopefully) but I don't know if the actual problem is still going or not because I found there were a lot of complaints about the same problem that I had online. Most complaints said that the problem was because the oil pipe was made with half rubber/metal. The rubber part will soon be cracked due to the weather or something. I called the cgt customer rep to verify this problem and then he told me that my car might have that problem and he was aware of that so he told me that they had switched oil pipe to metal. He lied again! I checked it and the oil pipe is still made with half rubber and metal. He seems like covering something. I believe this problem has had been existing for a long time but Toyota never do anything about it. This is a very serious issue. Toyota has to be liable of the driver and passengers safety if their products are defective.

12 Engine problem of the 2007 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 10/13/2009

Uncontrolled and uncommanded auto acceleration of Toyota 2007 Rav4 with subsequent impact into retaining wall, damages in excess of $3000. 00.

13 Engine problem of the 2007 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 09/14/2009

My 2007 rav 4 hesitates when I depress gas pedal. It began happening shortly after purchase in 2007 and the problem has increased in frequency & duration. Yesterday I started a left hand turn while oncoming traffic was clear, but because of vehicle's hesitation, in mid-turn, oncoming traffic suddenly appeared and had to stop for me to complete my turn. I narrowly avoided being in an accident, for which I would have been found at fault, as I was making a left hand turn.

16 Engine problem of the 2009 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 05/28/2009

We noticed that we started our 2009 Rav4 in the morning after sitting all night, there was a rattling type noise coming from the engine. This noise only occurs after the car has been sitting. We took it to the dealership we bought it from (Toyota) and after they checked it, determined it was a bad cam shaft. I asked if this was normal on a 2009 Rav4 and if it was a recall. The lady stated "it is a type of recall, but not all cars are affected, so they did not send out notice to all owners. " really? isn't that a "back door recall"? they are ordering the parts and will repair it under warranty.

17 Engine problem of the 2007 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 04/01/2009

After a dangerous surge-at-stop problem, we took our 2007 Rav4 to our dealer yesterday, but so far they claim they can't find anything wrong. We told the dealer that we don't want the car back until they fix this life-threatening condition. Yesterday was actually the third time that this happened, and each time the problem was more intense than the prior incident. The first time it happened, around three weeks ago, my husband wasn't sure if he had accidentally hit the accelerator, so he ignored it. The second time it happened, five days ago, he was more aware, and knew where his foot was placed, and knew for sure that this was an engine surge entirely unrelated to anything he was doing. It was only because he had his foot placed firmly on the brake that he was able to control the Rav4 and prevent it surging past the red light. Yesterday was the worst incident, since the surge happened, again at a red light, with cars passing in front of our Rav4 (we were first in line) and when my husband jammed his foot harder on the brake, the engine surged even harder, and louder, and he had to really force the brake pedal down. If our daughter had been driving the Rav4 there is no doubt in our minds that she would have gone right into the intersection, and either broadsided a vehicle, or been broadsided herself, with catastrophic results. This seems like the kind of life-threatening condition that NHTSA should really focus on, and that Toyota should want to immediately fix, before several people get killed.

18 Engine problem of the 2007 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 02/28/2009

My wife was stranded on the side of an interstate when our Toyota 2007 Rav4 v6 had a catastrophic failure of an oil hose which resulted in the loss of almost all the oil in the engine within a few minutes. The 3. 5l v6 engine in this vehicle is identical to the v6 in the Toyota avalon which is experiencing a very large number of failures such that a TSB was issued. The avalon started using this engine prior to the Rav4. I was told by a parts manager that there are so many of these failures that owners are waiting 6 weeks for the backordered replacement part and that 2500 parts are on national backorder. Toyota knows the same problem exists with the v6 Rav4 since the engine is identical but refuses to put out an associated TSB for the Rav4. This failure is dangerous in that it can cause the engine to lock up on the highway potentially causing an accident. Toyota is "quietly" replacing the failing hose with a metal hose only after a failure has occurred. (a defect admission of a design flaw). A recall is completely warranted for this defect. Toyota has issued no such recall.

22 Engine problem of the 2006 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 02/01/2006

The vehicle has frequent problems with acceleration - especially from standing still. I have had many close calls when trying to enter traffic from my driveway, or from other places. I will step on the gas, begin moving, then the engine will bog down and I will have no acceleration at all. Having children, I bought this vehicle based in large part to its safety features. This problem, however, practically negates all of that. If I step on the gas I should expect reliable acceleration so I can safely merge with traffic. I have brought this up to my dealer, and their explanation has been that this is an intentional thing, to be sure the lubricant in the transmission and drive train is of sufficient temperature before allowing hard acceleration, thus reducing wear on components. However, this problem can occur at any time, even after driving for a while - I do not accept this reason, nor do I feel that this is an acceptable way to deal with component wear. I should have acceleration at all times. It is my responsibility to drive intelligently and not gun the engine when it is cold, possibly damaging the engine. But it is Toyota's responsibility to provide me with a vehicle that will respond to my demands at any time. My safety and my family's depends on this.
