Took my 2017 Rav4 le to Toyota for shaking/vibrating at stoplight when fully warmed up. It does this every time I stop at a light or stop sign. They cannot find any faults or codes related to the issue and claim everything is normal. The vehicle feels like it will stall at every light. However they did tell me they were able to replicate the issue on another vehicle on the lot with similar mileage, but they tell me there is nothing they can do. Seems to be on all 2017 Rav4 le's not just mine.

My bought my vehicle brand new on December 10, 2019. On October 29, 2020 the battery stopped working with only 10k miles. I called Toyota and told them my battery needed to be replaced. Toyota told me to jump start the car and drive there to replace the battery. I advised my car was stuck in the garage and we would need someone to tow the car. When the �tow� arrived it was only a maintenance worker that jump started the vehicle and said I would need to drive it myself there. The worker advised me of the defective batteries for Rav4 and other models. Once my car was turned on and out of the garage, I was pulling out of my driveway when my power steering lock warning signal flashed. I called and explained I was an hour from the dealership and needed my car towed to them and the warranty I paid for should cover it. Subsequent to getting my vehicle back, I received paperwork in the mail with a recall notice on 12/9/2020 explaining the possibility of my vehicle stalling while driving, which could increase the risk of a crash. I pulled out my paperwork from the tech and on the bottom notes I noticed the tech wrote �interim status� explaining that I was advised there is currently an interim recall notice for the vehicle, but currently no remedy. This information was never explained or given to me until the recall notice via mail on 12/9/2020 even though the recall was defect info report was issued on may 20th.
There has been a safety recall on this car for over a month now with no remedy. If this problem could cause the car to stall and cause a higher chance of a crash, why is it taking so long to fix? it is unsafe!.
The car has stalled twice out of the blue. It was taken to the shop, and they said the vapor lock had gas in it. They wanted to charge $1000. The excuse was when it is hot outside you run the risk of gas getting into the vapor lock every time you fill up. . . That is bull. It stalled in motion twice on a city street.
Toyota uses a soy food based product in the insulation of the engine wiring. Apparently it attracts mice that chew on the wiring. This caused the engine to start misfiring from the damage and eventually stopped running. This was an extreme safety hazard to the occupants. The damage cost me $1,000 to repair. These crucial wires should never have been made from a product that is food for mice. I understand from the Toyota service manager that this is now a common problem. My car was on a city street when it stalled out. However, most miles are on freeways.

My 2019 tortola Rav4 xle with 6401 miles on it has been experiencing problems with stalling since I first got it in August. I notice it especially when I don't make complete stops. It will stall and yank the car forward. It is annoying and embarrassing that my new car does not drive smooth. I will be taking it to a Toyota dealerships to get evaluated.

The vehicle was able to restart and was taken to Toyota of hollywood (6000 hollywood blvd, hollywood CA, 323-498-2260) to be diagnosed. The results were unknown. The vehicle was being repaired under warranty. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 27,220.
Purchased auto 3/20/19 and at that time oil appeared to be right at mark on dipstick. A month later noticed the oil level rising. Took Rav4 back to dealer 7/5/19 and had new oil and filter installed and dipstick set at proper mark. Dealer felt it was probably overfilled at factory. However, on 7/20/19 the oil is now 1/2 inch above the mark set by the dealer on 7/5. Concerned this might be problematic for all ravs. Will be contacting dealer again for possible resolution.
At this time there at least 24 complaint about a "lurching" problem at low speed and re acceleration. A very significant "lurching" almost"stalling" is very apparent as the complaints indicate. In addition, the transmission starts in 4th gear. . . Not 1st gear from a dead stop. I would consider this a safety issue. Has been an issue from day 1 of car purchase. Vehicle now has 5600 miles on it.
My 2001 silver Toyota rav 4 had a sudden unintended acceleration problem when I was decelerating to a complete stop at an already congested intersection with traffic lights. I was applying brake pressure from 20 mph, down to 15,10,5, down to 2 mph, coming to a complete stop, my rav 4 engine suddenly started to rev-up/race wildly and very loud in a matter of 3, or 4-5 seconds (the engine/rpm sounded similar one would hear when you would be accelerating entering a freeway via the entrance ramp). My rav 4 shot forward so fast like it was on some rocket launching pad. My foot was on my brake pedal almost to the car floor and I could not stop the car from moving into the back - and rear ending the car in front of me which was about 10-15 feet in front of me, that was stopped waiting for the light to turn green at the already congested stop light intersection. Damage was done to the rear end of the SUV door hatch and the attached tire mounted on the back of the SUV in front of me. Damage on my rav 4 was car hood folding back and up and my front upper and lower section of my bumper and plastic grill area. I immediately reported the unintended acceleration problem to t he Toyota motor company the next day and they sent a 3rd party engineering analysis to examine my car. The investigator spent 4-5 hours examining my car and couldn't elaborate his findings but has submitted the information he was able to retrieve, back to the Toyota motor CO. Apparently, my 2001 rav 4 is a first generation model/version and didn't have the elaborate detailed edr devices installed in them, however some other device/devices, could possibly be retrieved? the final report by Toyota taken by the 3rd party field engineering analysis will take 3-4 weeks from this report I have posted. A police report was filed (please see the scanned info- for further investigation).

Tl the contact owns a 2018 Toyota Rav4. While driving 20 mph or less, the vehicle stalled when the accelerator pedal was released. The failure occurred four times in April. The contact took the vehicle to Toyota escondido (231 e Lincoln pkwy, escondido, CA 92026, (760) 300-1112) to be diagnosed and three abnormal codes appeared, which indicated rough idling and failure with the vehicle starting. The manufacturing was contacted and could not locate a failure. The contact wrote to the dealer's owner and requested that they extend the warranty; however, the request was denied. The manufacturer promised to call the contact back, but did not call. The failure mileage was 8,652.
Waiting at stop sign - car began accelerating, engine revving, racing (again, while at a complete stop). I braked and vehicle took full control seemingly pulling sideways first and then lurching out onto the roadway casing a devastating crash totaling my car and causing the other person's vehicle extensive damage. I could have been seriously injured or killed. It's the second time this happened. 1st time pulling into parking space - accelerated lurching forward no matter how much I braked striking curb and post - stalled out, thank goodness. A case has been opened with Toyota but I am told they'll deny anything wrong even though I have 10 pages of complaints in hand of people who have experienced this same nightmare I did. It's time for Toyota to take full responsibility and do something immediately. A class action lawsuit seems pretty obvious at this point concerning this dangerous safety issue since Toyota is not taking responsibility by issuing/sending out recalls on this dangerous mechanical failure which next time may cause a death.

The police and fire rescue were on the scene and a police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a lot and the insurance company deemed it totaled, but couldn't diagnose what the failure was since the vehicle's exterior frames were only left. The contact informed charles maund Toyota (8400 research blvd, austin, TX 78758)�of the failure. The manufacturer was informed of the failure and opened a claim, however they later informed the contact that the claim was denied since there was no indication that a defect caused the fire. The manufacturer informed the contact that upon inspection, the�j hook was missing and the positive battery cable was welded to the battery hold down bracket as the failure. The contact stated that she saw a news article that NHTSA was probing engine compartment fire for 2013-2018 Toyota Rav4, and believed the failure was related. The failure mileage was 39,187. Tp.

The contact owns a 2015 Toyota Rav4. While driving approximately 40 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was restarted and operated normally. The failure recurred twice. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing, but the technician was unable to duplicate the failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 5,896.
The light on the cruise control stalk blinks and it is very distracting at night while driving. Then the cruise control started dropping out while driving. No warning lights or codes were stored in the computer when checked by the dealer. The dealer replaced the cruise control switch, but the problem got worse. The engine started shutting off while driving on the highway with a total loss of electrical power and would take several minutes before it would restart due to no electrical power. The dealer then adjusted the switch on the brake pedal but it didn't help. The radio/navigation screen has since locked up and you have to restart the car to reset it. The engine will sometimes shut of for a few seconds and the restart on its own while driving. When this happens several warning lights stay on (abs, airbags, traction control & all wheel drive). The lights do not reset until the car is turned off and back on by the key. I have almost been involved in 3 accidents because of these problems. The car is now in the shop after contacting the manufacturer several times about the failure of the dealer to repair the car and that it is unsafe to drive. It is at a different dealership due to the selling dealers incompetence in their service department and management to address the problem. These problems have been going on for over 5 months and over a period of 15,000 miles and I do not believe it can be fixed and I do not believe the manufacturer is really trying to repair the car because of all the stalling they are currently doing at this time. I need your help.

My mother had the engine control module fixed June of 2013. She had to pay for this repair herself because Toyota refused to fix it, even though they sent letters out to people saying that they would cover the cost to repair this known issue. After 1900. 00 later, she paid for it. A year later I own this same vehicle and the same thing has gone bad. Its just out of the warranty. I almost got hit due to the car stalling when I pulled out at an intersection. This is a known problem, and it was paid for by another family member. Yet it has the same issue. Toyota needs to fix this problem. Horrible costumer service.

Well-maintained 2007 Rav4 (67k miles, no issues in the past) stalled completely while driving 50 mph. Nearly got rear ended as hazard flasher lights did not work at all. All power cuts off to inside of car. Once fan in engine turns off (about 6 minutes) car can start again. Dealership said "dirty throttle body part" so they cleaned it. Happened 2nd time the next week! then dealership replaced entire throttle body assembly. Happened 3rd time the following week! it's at dealership again now. Each time it happens, car is driving and once about 6 minutes passes, I can drive again. Barely have time to get near the shoulder of road.

My 2007 Toyota Rav4 was being driven by my wife and she noticed indicator lights suddenly coming on the dashboard and the vehicle sputtering and starting to stall. Prior to the vehicle stalling, she noticed the power steering inoperable and she was having difficulty steering to bring the vehicle to the shoulder lane and to a stop. She called me and I called for emergency roadside assistance. The vehicle was restarted. At this time, as the engine ran, the power steering was still inoperable and the vehicle was undrivable. It was then towed home. My mechanic checked and found the battery to be undercharged due to a defective alternator not properly charging the battery. The battery and the alternator was replaced and the power steering and all other functions resumed back to normal. My safety concern is that the power steering unit should not have stopped functioning as long as the engine was in operation. If the braking system continued to operate normally as the engine ran, the power steering unit should also continue to operate so that the driver can stay in complete control of the vehicle. If my wife was traveling at a higher rate of speed and on a busy interstate freeway, the outcome could have been disastrous. Please look into getting Toyota to recall and correcting this safety issue on mine and other 2007 Rav4s. Thank you for your assistance. A reply would be greatly appreciated.

This past summer the 2002 rav 4 started giving indications that something might not be right. The car had always gotten its required mileage maintenance which was also due at the time. So those things were done. However, over the last three weeks the following started: --the engine light came on, then off; --there was hesitation when accelerating/ a harsh jerk and shift when changing gears --the vehicle would sometimes slip back into neutral and stall while driving three independent Toyota-certified technicians diagnosed that there is a problem with the transmission, so we took it to darcars Toyota where the car was purchased. The technician there confirmed the diagnosis but said we needed to contact the warranty enhancement department. After placing me on hold for about 5 minutes, she told me that the car had exceeded the time for the warranty by about 3 months and therefore nothing could be done. Is Toyota willing to jeopardize the long-term customer loyalty and more importantly, the safety of their customers, just because the car chose to display its problems 3 months later?.
I own 2006 Toyota Rav4 with 48,000 miles. My car was driving fine until christmas eve this year. Last year in April I received recall letter saying I should replace the oil rubber hose. 18 months later I notice a lot of oil under my car, there was none left in the engine. I had to call towing company to take the car to the dealer. They said that the hose is broken, the one that supposed to be upgraded lasted only 18,000 miles. They charge us $700 because our warranty finished in July 2011 and the warranty for the recall is only for 1 year. I tried to negotiate with them but nobody even listened. We left the dealer with nothing, my husband was driving the car, he pulled to the parking lot and heard this big noise coming from the engine. It was 15 minutes after we left the dealer service department. My husband called the right away and they said that they tested this car and everything was fine but if we want we can bring the car back. We had to call for towing company again. The car came back to the same dealer and they admitted there is a noise but for them to even look at the engine they have to charge us $1200. I have already called the Toyota customer service and they sending me back to the dealer to talk to their customer relation manager. The manager said he did some investigation and my problem with the engine is not connected with the repair they did. I talk to many different mechanics outside of Toyota and the said it is impossible for engine to just die. Besides every mechanic says the hose should last much longer than 18 months and they believe that it was not installed the right way. Toyota main office says the support the dealer decision and there is nothing they can do. I don't know what to do. They don't feel any responsibility for this situation. My 2003 Rav4 has always been very sluggish from a dead start and any kind of sudden acceleration but I knew that I would eventually reach the legal speed limit. Driving 1 1/2 weeks ago, however, brought my attention to another, far more serious acceleration problem, far worse than just sluggishness. The SUV was shifting out of gear automatically and I feared for my safety as I was in moving traffic and I was having trouble moving. I immediately decided to take it to the Toyota dealer. Luckily, the dealership was close to where I was. They kept my car from approx. 3:30 pm that Friday until the following Monday. At first, they thought it was the transmission and said they needed until Monday to know for sure. I was told by the service rep. To not worry, that it may be far less expensive than I think. That Monday, I got a call from the serviced rep that he had both good news and bad news. They found the problem - an ecu problem but that I was out of warranty and I would have to buy a new one. I told them to go ahead and install it as I couldn't see any alternative. The work was done and the final cost for the unit and labor was $1,300. 00. I told the service rep that I felt shafted because the warranty expired after 80,000 and I had 84,000 miles at the time. Further, I had the SUV for just 7 years, not the limit of 8 years under the original warranty for the ecu. I went on the internet and discovered the NY times July, 2010 letter announcing many problems like mine with transmission damage as well and Toyota would now cover it all. According to the letter, Toyota had extended its warranty for the transmission to 150,000 miles and 10 years for the ecu ! I called the service rep and he said Toyota headquarters rep was there and said I had no extended warranty. The service manager never returned my call. I finally called Toyota headquarters and filed a complaint with them. I received a letter from a Toyota manager offering me $1,000 to buy a new Toyota vehicle. 11/03/10.

The vehicle was towed to the dealer who stated that the engine control module might have caused the failure, but they will further diagnose the failure. The manufacturer took report 1008300034 and will check with the dealership. The current and the failure mileages were 44,000.
The contact owns a 2002 Toyota Rav4. The contact was driving less then 5mph when the vehicle stalled without warning. The contact was able to restart the vehicle. The dealer performed a diagnostic and advised that the engine control module would need replacing. The vehicle was repaired yet the failure recurred. There were additional repairs made to the throttle position sensor yet that did not remedy the failure. The dealer then advised that they were unable to diagnose the failure and advised they were unaware of how to correct the failure. There were no further repairs. The failure mileage was 87,178 and the current mileage was 88,515.
Toyota issued a technical alert in 2006 for a defective engine control module in their 2201-2003 Rav4's. The alert was only sent to the dealerships, not to the consumers. This defect slowly destroys the transmission and without warning your car stalls like your running out of gas. A recall should have been issued but Toyota refuses. I never had the opportunity to fix the engine control module that costs $1300 now I have to replace that and my transmission for a total cost of $4400. Please hold them accountable.
The contact owns a 2002 Toyota rav 4. While driving 15 mph the vehicle down-shifted and stalled. The contact is aware of the safety risk involved. A transmission specialist replaced the transmission to correct the failure; however, the failure resurfaced. The current and failure mileages were 74000. Updated 12/7/09 the consumer stated when she attempted to make a turn, the vehicle downshifted erratically. The consumer was informed the engine control module needed to be replaced. The contact owns a 2002 Toyota rav 4. While accelerating from an idle position, the vehicle began hesitating and stalled. The vehicle also hesistated 30 to 45 seconds when shifting into second gear and engaging the accelerator to it's full capacity. The dealer flushed out the transmission fluid and replaced it; however, the failure recurred. The mechanic later stated that the electronic control module (ecm) was defective. The manufacturer will not assume the repair costs; however, the contact stated that since there is a defect the repair should be free. The failure mileage was 80,000 and the current mileage was 96,000.
