This is an ongoing problem that has existed since I owned the vehicle. More then half the time when I step down on the gas hard, my vehicle nearly stalls, severe hesitation, then slowly recovers and applies power. This would be when you have to pass a car on a two lane road or merge into heavy traffic. It is hard to know if it will be there when I need it or if I will have to wait for the engine to catch up. I have reported it to the Toyota service department multiple times; they have test drove it, had a factory rep. Look at it and at computer printouts. They admit there is a problem but don't seem to know how or want to fix it. I thought I should report it, since the information coming out now is Toyota seems to like to hide the safety problems with their vehicles. I feel this is a safety issue since I can't depend on the vehicle when I might most need it to get out of the way.

I have a 2002 Toyota rav 4. I have taken my car to the dealer for the changes of oil and filter. Twice they suggested a wynns system engine cleaning which we paid for. The last one was done on April 2005. Last October 7, 2005 I was driving my car on the expressway and all of a sudden the oil light lit up and the car stopped. The car was towed from the highway to our house and the next day was towed to the dealer adriel Toyota in rio grande, puerto rico. About two hours later they called me and stated that the motor stalled and the warranty was not going to pay since I had not taken the car to them for the last oil change. I reminded them that just nine months earlier a wynns motor engine cleaning had be done by them and that it was impossible for the motor of the car to have sludge if they had done the job correctly. The Toyota company of puerto rico called to tell me the same thing. I made a complaint at the consumers affairs in puerto , I am waiting for a decision. Today I showed the pictures to an automotive expert who states that the motor have not had any oil changes and the worst was that there was no way that the engine had be cleaned. The dealers states that they have not had any motor sludging on any rav 4 in puerto rico but consumer report states that Toyota has this problem most commonly with camry's . Today I found out that rav 4 have the same engine camry's have. Am I supposed to be punished for whatever problem Toyotas engines have?.
While vehicle was at idle and with no warning the vehicle will stall, causing consumer to pull over. Dealer will be notified.

Problem of stalling and vehicle acceleration ongoing since June. . Now August and back to dealer again as this is very dangerous in traffic especially with children in vehicle. .
The car has a stalling problem. I have taken back to the dealership twice for this problem. The car initially just had a starting problem where it will start and stalls immediately. The last time I took it to the dealership they told me it the starter and I had it replaced, but it is still doing the same thing. It does not matter if the car is cold or warm. I could just pull into a gas station and it won't start. If I wait about ten minutes, it will start again. But, I have no idea when this will happen. Yesterday, driving on the highway going about 60mph the car just stalled. I was lucky enough to be able to drift to the shoulder. I waited about ten minutes and it started again. There is no rhyme of reason to this, there is no warning of any kind.
My rav has had 2 engine replacements the first at 16,000 miles and the second at 49,000 miles. The first one happened when it stalled out going through an extremely large puddle of water on the access road and the second for no apparent reason.
While driving vehicle on freeway about 80 mph had attempted to change lanes when vehicle suddenly stalled or died out for no reason in heavy traffic; everything went out.
Car stalled twice.
Vehicle stalls in rainy weather.
