3 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2007 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 09/12/2017

My car has failed inspection because of leaks in the mufflers. Living in a cold weather climate, the roads are salted constantly and my muffler should not have rusted and have holes in. The material is not sufficient enough for heavy salting. I believe the v6 engines have this recall but not 4 cylinder.

4 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2008 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 04/10/2017

I own Toyota rav 4 2008. I purchased a used certified vehicle in 2009. I have encountered an issue with my car such that engine started stalling intermittently while drive to my home. On the dash board I saw the engine oil light coming on intermittently. I was able to make it to home safely and upon inspection I found that engine oil level was way down to the point that it was not detectable at all. There was no oil on the dip stick. I looked at the service record and my car was serviced on oct 15th 2016 for oil change and other other safety recall. On October 15, 2016 the mileage was 83406. The next service was due on March 15 or at 88406 miles. I called the dch Toyota of simi valley dealership and they asked to come in the morning for inspection. Then I went to automotive store and purchased 5w-20 oil, it took 3 quart of oil and I was to see the oils level as normal on dip stick. Then I argued with dealer that it should not consume 3 or more quart of oil. I went to another independent mechanic he checked the tail pipe and he saw burned oil. He confirmed that engine is burning oil. Then I called Toyota motor and complained that engine is burning oil. They authorized the dealer to do the oils consumption test. They will investigate on how much oil it burns? dch Toyota of simi valley did the oil consumption study and reported that my car did not consume enough oils to do the warranty repair. They said it only consumed 3/4 quart of oil every 1200 miles and it passed the oil consumption test. Still I have the same car I put about 2 or more quart every 1500 miles. The engine repair will cost me $5000. 00 dollars or more. I think dealer did flawed study on oil consumption test do they do not have to do warranty repair.

5 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2006 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 06/14/2016

While driving east on I-490 from rochester to I-90, the check engine light came on and the engine was misfiring. We exited the freeway and the check engine light started to flash, the engine sputtered and died. I put the car in neutral and parked on the right curb. Fortunately this happened on a city street and not on the freeway. Power steering was of course lost, so the maneuver was difficult. Aaa towed the car to our repair shop, and they reported 24 engine codes were thrown, and recommended a complete engine tune-up, including replacement of the six ignition coil packs, spark plugs, and intake manifold gaskets. Much of the $1,000 expense was 4. 5 hours of labor, to remove the intake manifold (necessary to reach the rear bank of cylinders 1,3,5). This was not the first time the ignition coils have failed on this vehicle. In October 2012 (around 50k miles) engine code p0354 was thrown, and I replaced the coil on cylinder 4. In January 2014 (around 58k miles) code p0356 was thrown, and I replaced the coil on cylinder 6. Since the dangerous incident of lost power and replacement of all six coils on 14 June 2016 (around 80k miles) only nine months and 7k miles later, code p0351 (bad coil on cylinder 1) was thrown on 24 March 2017, and now code p0355 (cylinder 5) was thrown on 28 March 2017. I have already spent around $1,200 to deal with this problem, and the car is today back in the repair shop to have two rear bank coils replaced, for $229. There is clearly something wrong when these coils are failing under normal operating conditions, especially after only 7k miles. This is not just a problem for us. Other repair shops have said this era of Rav4 is known for this problem. . Read more...

6 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2007 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 05/28/2016

We were driving straight on I-95 at 70 mph when we heard some loud noises and the car started swerving (between exits 65 and 71 in nc). We thought the tire blew out, but then we saw smoke in the rear window. We managed to pull to the side of the road and saw some oil leaking in the bottom. We opened the hood and smoke was coming out. The outside of the tail pipe was completely black. We had the vehicle towed to a Toyota dealership and were informed that the engine was blown. A piston drove through the engine block.

7 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2008 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 01/22/2016

The contact owns a 2008 Toyota Rav4. While driving over a pothole at 35 mph, a loud abnormal noise was heard from the rear of the vehicle. The contact pulled over and discovered that the heat shield from the muffler was detached and wedged near the rear passenger tire. The contact mentioned that the detached heat shield was removed. The contact was an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the spot weld on the muffler was weak and the muffler needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 63,536.

8 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2005 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 02/07/2014

There is a known manufacturing defect, as described by Toyota TSB sb-0015-11, relating to defective cylinder head bolt threads. This defect causes rapid burning of coolant in the engine, leading to overheating and excessive smoke from the exhaust and exhaust manifold, and separation of the engine head resulting in loss of compression and fire hazard. Vehicle was being driven when the issue manifested. Manufacturer refuses to repair, recall, or warranty the defect or any repairs resulting from the same. There are hundreds of complaints on many automotive forums, along with confirmations from certified automotive mechanics.

9 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2006 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 01/31/2014

I have been changing my oil every 3000 miles / 3 months or less this Rav4 is not leaking oil and not putting soot out or blowing blue smoke out the tail pipe showing that it is burning oil. No engine lights or oil lights came on until the engine stopped running. By this time it was too late. I took my Rav4 to goodyear and they said that they had to put 4. 5 quarts of oil in which is how much the Rav4 takes. They also stated they did not see any oil leaks anywhere. This is the base model four cylinder model. Oil should not be gone in less than 3000 miles especial with an engine that has less that 150000 miles today. I feel this is a defect that should be addressed by Toyota and that everyone that encounters this problem should be compisated for the kbb fair value at the time it happens for this problem. We the people buy cars that should last and not be stuck in a financial hardship for a factory defect that does not even warn us of low oil.

10 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2007 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 11/29/2013

My 2007 Toyota rav 4 experienced some heavy knocking on Friday Nov. 29th. I took it into kost tire and muffler in clark summit, PA to have then take a quick look at it. They said the engine was full of oil at the time. I drove it approximately 8. 5 miles after leaving kost before deciding to have it towed to the Toyota dealership in scranton on Sunday. On Monday morning Toyota said the car arrived with no oil. How could this be? there was no oil in the kost parking lot, in my driveway or on the tow truck bed ( can be verified by all sources). If the car were to have spilt a full engine of oil there would have been some kind of evidence(burning smell, sight of lost oil, car smoking -but there was nothing). Toyota has denied the warranty claim due to what they say is lack of engine lubrication. This is absolutely bogus. After reading some online blog I have seen a number of other customers who own 2007 Rav4's who have had the same exact problem.

11 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2007 Toyota RAV4

15 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2006 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 11/21/2011

Muffler & tailpipe and housing on my Rav4 are rusting extensively. Had dealer check it out. Recommends I replace my exhaust system. There were holes in my exhaust systems due to rust. Called and complained to Toyota headquarters. Unfortunately, they only offer a 3 yr/36,000 mile warranty. Case ref #1203230216. My car is only 5 yrs old!!! my exhaust system can fall off my Rav4 on the highway and cause an accident. Who is to blame in such a senario? Toyota motor company for making inferior exhaust systems? there is rust on garage floor where I park my Rav4!!!.

16 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2006 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 02/16/2011

Last night while driving with my young daughter on a lonely highway with no cell service, my 2006 Toyota rav 4 v6 limited started making a noise. I immediately checked my dash and no lights were on, pressures okay. The noise stopped and I kept driving. About twelve miles from home the noise started again and my daughter noticed. I looked down and my oil pressure light flashed on and right back off. We barely made it to our house. When I got out and looked under the car, oil was everywhere. It had ran all the way to the back of the car. When I pulled the dip stick there was no oil on the stick. My husband checked it today and found a hole in a rubber hose. I went on-line and have read hundreds of similar stories. Supposedly, Toyota was to send out a letter in October 2009 to all 2006 rav owners. Well, I never received a letter and I've been the one and only owner at the same address. So, it's not like I couldn't be found. Now my husband is trying to find the replacement part for the vvti- oil hose, that is now called a 'pipe'. I want to know why this wasn't considered a recall issue instead of a limited service campaign? that oil had spewed all over and under the hot engine onto the manifold. There was nothing keeping it from catching fire which could have taken both our lives. If I had received the letter (a year and a half ago) the hose could have been replaced. Now, I'm looking at repair costs that could include a new engine. At this point, we don't know how much damage was done. My car is paid for and I don't have the funds to buy a new car or have the engine replaced. I want to know with all of the other Toyota issues in the last several years, why this wasn't addressed? my husband just called a local dealer to get the replacement part. He said the warehouse has over 250 in stock! which tells them that this is no isolated issue. He said that the part number has changed about four times, which means Toyota knows there is a safety issue.

17 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2007 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 08/11/2009

The contact owns a 2007 Toyota rav-4. The contact stated that excessive amounts of smoke was released from the tail pipe when first started. The vehicle was burning 1. 1 quarts of oil every 2,300 miles. The contact believed the failure was contributed to a manufacturing defect because the vehicle was recommended to have an oil change performed every 5,000 miles and the contact was concerned that the failure would destroy the engine. The manufacturer was contacted and advised that the oil consumption was normal and that the vehicle was designed to burn 1 quart of oil every 1,200 miles. The failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 40,000.

18 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2006 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 07/25/2009

The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Rav4. The contact noticed a patch of oil underneath the vehicle. He checked the oil and discovered that it was completely low. He placed five quarts of oil in the vehicle and within 30 minutes, all five quarts had leaked out. The contact took the vehicle to a repair shop, but it has not yet been inspected. The dealer stated that they had just repaired this issue on another Toyota Rav4 and that it was a safety issue. Through research, the contact discovered a TSB for the Toyota avalon (service bulletin number 06405, NHTSA item number 10018855, component: engine and engine cooling:engine, summary: engine oil drip: bank 1 vvti oil line). Both the avalon and the Rav4 have the same engine. The TSB stated that vehicles may experience a small/slow oil drip from the bank 1 vvti oil supply line on the front of the engine. The contact has experience repairing vehicles and stated that the oil supply line on the front of the engine appeared to burst, which caused oil to splatter all over the engine and exhaust manifold. There was no indication that the oil was low in the vehicle. The contact believes that the failure was due to a manufacturer defect and a recall should be issued. The VIN was unknown. The current and failure mileages were 80,000.

19 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem of the 2007 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 02/11/2009

I purchased a new 2007 Rav4 from Toyota of braintree in 2007. 1. In 2009 I could hear wind in the driver's window; I took the vehicle to be checked, Toyota service department said I was hearing things. 2. The driver's door caught fire (I had the keys with me) I had to spend $606. 01 to fix it, Toyota said there was water intrusion (I thought, it probably was, because of the air leak previously reported in 2009) 3. The steering wheel felt strange when I drove, I took it back for service, the diagnosis was steering shaft internal failure which needed to be replaced; I fought to get that fixed out of warranty. 5. On November 25, 2011 I was driving, the window fell in on me and on November 26, 2011, I had to have the driver's side window regulator replaced for $338. 30 7. Now, oil is leaking into the muffler. (I purchase oil frequently) this vehicle is only 4. 5 years old and should not have any of these major problems, when I purchased this Rav4, it was going to be my last vehicle purchase because Toyota advertises longevity of their products. I also know people who drive 1990 and 1995 Toyota products who have never had any of these problems. I was also treated very poorly during some of my repair visits. After the door caught on fire, I had a meeting with the owner of Toyota of braintree, [xxx] but his resolution was giving me $13,000. 00 for my vehicle (which I own) and me purchasing a brand new vehicle, which meant I would have a monthly payment. I did contact Toyota headquarters in California and filed a complaint and never received any resolution. Since then I received a letter from the national center for dispute settlement stating they can't help me. Thank you for any assistance, sincerely, Toyota Rav4 owner. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
