Replaced both rear control arms and adjustment bolts. Technician said I was lucky not to have been driving. Supposedly when aligning my tires - the screws showed rusty and broke off. Paid $900 to have replaced. This should not happen in a car like Toyota. I am the original owner and have always taken excellent care of my vehicle.

Failure Date: 05/28/2019

Noticed a change in the suspension of my vehicle. I went to the sun Toyota dealership for a routine oil change and tire balancing, and also a wheel alignment. Dealer informed me that the right tire camber and caster out of specification. They adjusted right front camber from -. 9 to . -3 attempt to shift right front lower control arm, no change for caster. I was told that I will not notice the difference and that was the best adjustment they can do. I called the Toyota corporate number because I felt that this is a defect from Toyota and should be resolved.

4 Front Suspension Control Arm problem of the 2011 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 10/23/2018

While turning right to go down the next aisle in a parking lot my passenger rear tie rod aka control arm broke at the factory weld! I purchased this car brand new off the lot and have been told by numerous mechanics that this should not happen and it's a defect. Had I been on the freeway, this would have been catastrophic. I drive a 2011 Rav4 with 104,000 miles and these have been recalled for this issue, however my VIN# is not one of the recalled ones. The Toyota dealership is going to charge me $600 to replace it. I'm asking for them to take a look at the other one and replace it if necessary.

This vehicle has had the rear control arm recall that seals the part in epoxy, making rear toe adjustment impossible. This vehicle is out of tolerance on rear toe and will cost $685 to repair. Toyota should be paying for this since they rendered the suspension part non adjustable.

7 Front Suspension Control Arm problem of the 2007 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 07/10/2017

9 Front Suspension Control Arm problem of the 2007 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 08/03/2016

On July 31st, 2015, the Toyota dealership performed a suspension recall work to replace both "rear #1 lower suspension arms". That work included a 4 wheel alignment and a permanent sealant that prevented future rear alignment of the rear wheels. On August 3rd, 2016, (approx. 13k miles later) the vehicle was taken to a les schwab tire center to have the brakes inspected. During the brake inspection, the technician noted severe abnormal tire tread wear on the inside shoulders of both rear tires. The inside shoulder of the right rear tire was so severe that it was showing steel belts and was near failure (immanent tire blowout condition). Les schwab noted that the front tires had normal even wear. Note: the 4 wheel alignment performed on 7/31/2015 was the only alignment performed prior to 8/3/2016, the alignment check on 8/3/2016 indicated the front wheel alignment was very close and within tolerant range of the 7/31/2015 alignment, and the vehicle has not involved in any accidents since before 7/31/2015. I believe the safety recall work performed by Toyota on 7/31/2015 did not fix the stated problem in the safety recall (Toyota recall ¿operation 77toz-csj¿ ref: NHTSA campaign number: 13v383000). Either the recall work was not performed correctly or the parts or method of the recall failed to correct the issue leaving my car with an unsafe wheel alignment causing severe abnormal wear on the inside shoulders of the rear tires leaving my car at risk of rear tire blow out. The les schwab tire center replaced the tires and the rear #1 control arms with ¿approved after-market parts¿ to allow for a safe rear alignment of the vehicle.

10 Front Suspension Control Arm problem of the 2007 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 04/28/2016

I was driving on a city street in west haven CT (near 195 w spring st) when I heard a metalic noise from the rear of the vehicle and lost control of the car, veering into the incoming traffic lane. I was driving < 25 mph and the pavement was dry, and managed to park the car on the side of the road. Fortunately there were no cars in the incoming lane, and there was no injury. My wife was in the passenger seat next to me. Upon inspecting the car, I discovered that the rear right wheel was tilted at an angle relative to the body of the car. I called aaa (time was around 7:45 a. M. ) and a towing truck arrived , and towed my car to a nearby garage (robert's service center, inc. , 216 buckingham Ave, milford, CT). I did not call police or take a picture. The service supervisor informed me that after inspecting the car, they foud that the rear forward control arm had failed (come apart at the middle). This control arm was the subject of a safety recall by Toyota in 2013, and my vehicle was repaired at girard Toyota in new london, CT, at the time of the recall. The failed arm still had the repair sticker on it. The shop removed and replaced the failed control arm and the one that was still intact on the left rear wheel. The car is now drivable. I believe that the outcome is likely to have been catastrophic if it had happened on the highway. I reported the incident to Toyota and was given the case number 1604300620. I spoke to a case manager, mr. Thorn. My intentions were to; 1) alert Toyota that a recall fix has failed on my car; 2) I wanted a Toyota dealer to inspect my car for an independent evaluation and to assure safety of the vehicle; 3) reimburse me for the cost of repairs. He acknowledged receiving the information, but indicated that a Toyota dealer cannot guarantee a third party work. He asked me to file my expenses, but with no assurance that it will be honored.

11 Front Suspension Control Arm problem of the 2007 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 04/15/2016

The car was recalled in 2014 for the rear control arms. They were replaced in 2014. 2 years later and the part broke again. Had just pulled out of a side street when it broke, so was able to pull to the side of the road. Had car towed to mechanic. Cost $560 to have it replaced. Could have been deadly if I had been on the interstate.

12 Front Suspension Control Arm problem of the 2010 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 04/14/2016

2006-2011 Toyota Rav4 rear lower suspension arm recall g0v I went in to have this recall performed for a 3rd time and walked out paying a bill of $1,585. 92. This was a result of the recall put into place by Toyota. What the recall does not address is the issue performing a rear-end alignment on the vehicles affected by this recall. A rear-end alignment will now consist of replacing the previously adjustable rear suspension arms made non-adjustable due to the epoxy applied for this recall, aligning the rear end and re-applying epoxy with parts. The cost of a rear-end alignment to the vehicle owner will now include the cost for replacing the rear suspension arms and the recall epoxy kit. This is the band-aid fix" for the design or design implementation flaw in the rear-end control arm that Toyota has put in place. This is not acceptable. When I purchased the Toyota Rav4, the cost of a rear-end alignment was a fraction of the current cost with this "band-aid fix" in place. I feel that Toyota is not taking responsibility for this design flaw and unfortunately is passing the added expense to their customers. I will be trading in my Rav4 as soon as I can. I will not be replacing it with another Toyota product because of this experience. It is sad to think that this is the third try to repair this issue and this is the best that Toyota can come up with, by making the customer pay more for the pleasure of owning a supposedly reliable and low maintenance cost vehicle.

14 Front Suspension Control Arm problem of the 2008 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 05/19/2015

My 2008 Toyota rav 4 had a recall for the rear lower control arms, the first recall was around Jan. 12, 2013. (64,306) miles. At this time Toyota tightened the control arms to the correct torque and I believe completed alignment. About 1 yr later, on Jan. 17, 2014 (78,847) miles, the lower control arms where replaced, alignment was done, and epoxy was applied to the bolts for a permanent fix approved by Toyota. When having my brakes replaced at Toyota dealer on may 17, 2015 (101,475) miles, they informed me my rear alignment was out slightly. I was told the only way to fix this is to have the same job done, as was done in January 2014, at a cost of approx. $900. 00. I was told I must have hit a pot hole?? this was a Toyota recall for a defect on their part with their parts. Obviously, the permanent fix didn't work. I guess they would expect me to pay every time my vehicles rear comes out of alignment to pay $900. 00. My Toyota rav 4 has always been serviced at the same Toyota dealership in vineland, new jersey, which is where I purchased it new. I contacted Toyota corp, and they where no help. Also, having a problem with excessive oil consumption, like many others. What has happened to Toyota and their reputation!.

15 Front Suspension Control Arm problem of the 2010 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 03/19/2015

The Toyota safety recall #csj was performed yesterday on my car. The recall replaced the rear lower control arms and then were locked in place with epoxy. I purchased a 2010 Rav4 that was repairable. When I needed an alignment it would cost about 70. Now when the car needs an alignment, the lower control arms may have to be replaced at major expense because there is no adjustment. Toyota redesigned the lower control arms on the 2012 Rav4 and those should have been used in the repair. This repair damages the value of the car because no one would ever buy a car that can't be aligned. If this have been explained to me before the repair, I would never have allowed the repair to have been made. Toyota needs to recall the car again and replace the lower control arms with an adjustable arm as is designed in every car on the road.

16 Front Suspension Control Arm problem of the 2010 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 01/29/2015

Vehicle hit curb and required front suspension component replacement, and a 4 wheel alignment. Vehicle previously had recall #nhtsa13v383000 which it had both rear lower (adjustable) control arms replaced and the adjuster area sealed with an epoxy rendering them non adjustable after recall completion. Toyota's service bulletin (t-sb-0042-14 dated June 30-2014) title "rear suspension toe adjustment out of specification after sr csj". It states in this bulletin (under paragraph b) "if the rear toe alignment is still out of specification on either side replace the rear suspension arm no. 1 and complete the campaign csj again for any replaced rear suspension arm. American family insurance denied payment for the re-epoxy of arms so I called Toyota customer assistance and explained the situation and the statement in their service bulletin, the case #is 1501292150 phone 800-321-4331, the rep was george and he stated that technical information must be obtained through an authorized Toyota dealer, I then contacted the service manager at our local Toyota dealership (andy %ballweg midwest Toyota 800 3rd street s. La crosse wisc. 54601 608-793-7000) andy then contacted technical assistance and they refused to re-apply epoxy as stated in service bulletin. I then contacted customer assistance again and spoke with jessica, she listened to my concerns and asked if she could review the situation with corporate and call me back, I agreed. Jessica called and left a message stating that Toyota was unable to assist in the application of epoxy but stated that Toyota recomends the epoxy to be applied to the #1 arms after the alignment. I took the vehicle to ballweg and had the epoxy applied at my expense as I didn't want to return the vehicle without the safety recall provisions being met. I also filed a complaint with the ftc reference # 59031887.

18 Front Suspension Control Arm problem of the 2007 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 02/14/2014

Reference Toyota recall: tis designation c2j found https://techinfo. Toyota. Com/techinfoportal/staticcontent/en/techinfo/html/prelogin/docs/cp/c2jtofaq. Pdf reference question q1a and answer a1a: ". . . . Alignment will be set and the arms will be sealed with epoxy. " reference question qua and answer a1c: "if the rear wheel alignment shifts out of specification, rear suspension arms or other components may need to be replaced. " reference my phone conversation with Toyota @ 888-270-9371 on 11 February 2014 @ 0800 and their assigned case # 1402110228: my question to Toyota to the answer a1c above: who pays for the required replacement of suspension arms or other components? their answer was: the owner. My complaint deals with fairness. Due to a Toyota design defect, rear control arms must be encased in epoxy thus rendering rear wheel alignments impossible. If an owner hits a pothole, and rear wheel(s) are knocked out of alignment, the control arm and/or associates components might need to be replace - at considerable expense to the owner. This could generate large profits to Toyota due to a remedy for one of their design defects. Without the (epoxy encapsulation), a mere rear wheel alignment might rectify the misalignment. A possible $50 versus $500 repair. Additionally, if the control arms must be replaced to align the back wheel(s), Toyota is the only entity that has the know how and parts to re-encapsulate the new control arm(s): more profits for Toyota. Owners need to be made aware of the consequences this remedy will have on their vehicle so they can decide if they want a vehicle in which the rear wheels cannot be aligned without considerable expense. My question to nhsta: why should the owner pay for repairs to one of their remedies? is this fair?.

19 Front Suspension Control Arm problem of the 2005 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 11/29/2012

The lower control arm in the recall from Toyota broke away, from what we found and were told by people who inspected the car from the insurance company for their law suit against Toyota. The drivers side tire made a noise when it rolled back. We impacted the center devider at 60-65 mph. There was no way to compensate and steer away it happened so quickly. The safety belts hurt on impact and our knees took the impact. At impact the front end of the car was torn away and destroyed from the radiator to the front drivers side door. The drivers side door was warped and the car wrinkled all the way back to the drivers side rear quarter panel. Inside the back of the car panels for storage all popped out. The elecric windows would not operate when the troopers came. The insurance company determinated the car was a total loss. Toyota ignored our attempt to resolve our complaint without litigation so we are suing Toyota for our losses and injuries.

20 Front Suspension Control Arm problem of the 2002 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 11/14/2012

Returned car to dealer due to experiencing handling difficulty a few days after dealer performed four wheel alignment. I was informed that rear wheels were once again out of alignment due to being frozen with rust and both rear lower control arms and cam kit/plate needed replacement . My dealer tells me that since mine is an earlier model, it is not covered under a safety recall of later models experiencing the identical problem. The service person did say that they had recently performed this repair on a number of pre-2006 Rav4 models. Since this is a potentially dangerous condition, it seems to me that the "rear lower suspension arm "recall notice ought to be extended to include earlier year models.
