I purchased this vehicle used in July of 2023. There had been a persistant clunking noise in the rear when the road is bumpy along with some stabilty or swaying feeling. I had it inspected by independant mechanical shops. I was advised to replace the shock absorbers and the stabilizer links which I did. The rt rear shock abosborber was bad. March of 2024 I took a road trip to florida. First long trip since replacing the parts. On the drive down I was by myself and felt as though the rear of the vehicle was swaying back and forth a lot worse than before changing the parts listed above. I thought maybe it was the condition of the roads. On the way home my son was following me in his vehcle. He had told me that when the "swaying" feeling is happening the rear of the vehicle is moving separate to the front. The clunking sound is still there and that stability issue seems to have worsen since changing the suspension parts previously listed. There was a point in driving home in the rain where I definitely felt the abitlity to control the vehicle was difficult and dangerous. I will be taking the vehicle to be inspected further. I've read information on a Toyota forum that there are other owners experiencing this issue. I do have vidio and you can see my body rocking back and forth in the driver seat while it's happening and the hood swaying but am unable to upload it.

Takata recall I have Rav4 2012 fwd base with 41000 miles, and have a regular maintenance. - when driving at low speed (30-40 mpg) in city, the driving is not comfortable because I feel all of the vibration in wheels. Also, small oscillation does not disappear and maintain in long time. - when driving in a highway, it is very dangerous because a little bumpy road makes my Rav4 oscillated very very severely so that I should be very carefully in order to control my car for driving in straight direction, and not to being turned over. - when my car is in stationary, I can shake my car with my hand. I thought it was a characteristics of SUV because I had driven a sedan before Rav4. But, I asked to inspect my car in a Toyota service center, and a mechanic said that the rear struts and suspensions are worn out, and should be replaced. In addition, he said that the front shock absorbers would show a malfunctioning in a near future. The mechanic shook my car with his hand, and my car was shaken according to his hand. The mechanic said that cars should not be shaken by hands. It is very disappointed with Toyota auto. I should spend more than 2,000 dollars to fix the front and rear shock absorbers with after-market price. I heard that Toyota recalled for rear suspension problem 2006~2011 Rav4. But, I think this recall should be extended to 2012 Rav4.

While driving car on highway, I heard a low noise from the passenger side rear of the car that sounded like something in the right rear suspension broke. Since this time, the car sounds like something is loose and makes a knocking sound from the passenger side rear of the vehicle when driving between 10 mph and 30 mph when you go over small bumps. It sounds like a broken spring or shock absorber or some other component of the rear suspension system is loose or broken. I am concerned about driving the vehicle, or letting other family members drive the vehicle, especially at high way speeds.

Performing a three-point turn on an uneven, rocky surface. Heard a loud clang/pop from the rear of the car. Thought a rock was kicked up or it might have been suspension related. Was informed by dealer at previous oil change that I was in need of replacing passenger rear shock absorber as it was leaking badly. I had figured that the failed shock absorber had finally given in and had created the noise. I went ahead and scheduled an appointment for service that same week and had an oil change done and had both rear shock absorbers replaced. Peeked underneath the car when I got home to see new the new shiny (not oily) shocks and noticed that the bolt connecting the anti sway or stabilizer bar to the lower suspension arm had sheared off on the driver's side. The bottom half of the bolt, the bushing, washer and nut were missing. The passenger side was complete and intact. The failure of this critical piece of suspension had obviously created the noise I heard.
