4 Side/rear Glass problem of the 2008 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 05/07/2010

My wife and I were driving our 2008 Toyota Rav4 sport north on I-95 in virginia at exit 161 when we heard an explosion sound on the top of the car. I slid back the moonroof cover on the inside of the car and could see the moonroof glass was broken, it had a hole in the middle and the rest was shattered. We were not near a bridge or a tower or a truck where something could have fallen on top of the car. There was no other damage on the top of the car. The glass around the hole was pushed up like it had exploded. I called the dealer and asked if they had heard of this before and if there was a recall on it. They said no and it would cost over $1,000 to replace. I took it to where my insurance company told me to get it fixed. . Read more...

5 Side/rear Glass problem of the 2007 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 04/17/2010

While driving down the road in my 2007 Toyota Rav4 the left side passanger window imploded causing the back seat to fill with thousands of pieces of glass for no apparent reason.

6 Side/rear Glass problem of the 2007 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 11/22/2008

I was driving on a rural interstate (I-16) in georgia when I heard a loud explosion. I initially thought I had a blown tire. I pulled over to find my moon roof had a hole located in the middle of the glass. The rest of the glass was shattered in tiny pieces, but still holding together. I was the only one on the highway and was nowhere near an overpass. When I reached atlanta, I went to marietta Toyota for assistance. The inspector said that the hole was caused by a rock bouncing up off of the highway. I was traveling at a rate of 65 mph. I have a wind deflector at the front of the moonroof. The glass around the hole was pushed up as if pressure had caused the explosion. The scenerio he described would be impossible. The cover was closed on the interior, so thankfully, no one was hurt. Toyota has refused to repair the moon roof. The cost is $585. 00 plus labor.

8 Side/rear Glass problem of the 2004 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 07/04/2006

The vehicle was parked with all windows down, heard a loud noise looked back to see the rear door window shatter completely. Upon inspection, there was no sign of any foreign objects inside or outside the vehicle. The window pulled away about 3/4 inch on both edges, it bowed outwards and there was a rectangular opening in the glass about 6 inches wide by 2 inches high. The local dealer concurred that it was not a normal reaction to the glass being hit by an object but said no incidents have been reported therefore will not pay for the cost of the glass.

9 Side/rear Glass problem of the 2006 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 07/01/2006

Sat, July 1, 2006 the rear window of my 2006 Toyota Rav4 simply blewout sitting in our driveway. There was no traffic, precipitation or wind and temp hovered 75-80 degrees. Most of glass remained loosely intact but was all shattered with a medium size hole in the right side of the rear window, with small fragments found outside of window. Small pieces of glass continued to fall out. The car had been sitting cold (not running) since the evening prior (6:30pm) and was in partly shaded area. Both rear driver/ passenger side windows lowered about 2 inches to circulate air. Nothing was in car to contribute to internal pressure and nothing hit the car as I was witness to this event as it occurred. Driveway is on a hill; car faced forward and angled down the hill toward garage (car rear end highest). Large glass pieces found mostly outside of car just below window with some larger pieces laying on outside of rear door with smaller fragments on the ground below. Small glass fragments found inside car below window. Pictures taken. Toyota contacted and questioned as to next step. Toyota representative offered nothing as this was holiday weekend and nothing was available, according to Toyota. Auto glass repair companies called and no one available due to holiday. Insurance company called, given same story again! Toyota called again. Can't leave car sit with broken rear window and we expect rain. Asked about knocking rest of glass out as the glass needed to be cleaned up and opening needed to be secured. I explained I couldn't drive the car, it was unsafe to drive & towing was not an option as nearest Toyota dealer didn't have towing capacity. . . And closed in an hour. Knocked rest of glass out and taped up rear window opening. Drove to dealer mon morning to leave rav for repair and secured rental car. Told my car would not be looked at until wed. Thur my car looked at and new window ordered and hoped to be here in a week or so. Broken glass disposed of.

10 Side/rear Glass problem of the 2004 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 10/17/2005

Driving for about 30 minutes, then all of a sudden the back window on my 2004 Toyota Rav4 shattered to pieces. There was no indication that something hit the window. It seems as though the window shattered on it's own. Window was replaced the day after the event took place.

11 Side/rear Glass problem of the 2004 Toyota RAV4

Failure Date: 05/03/2005

The vehicle had a rear door with a window and while driving about 35 mph a pop was heard. The window shattered then started breaking away. It was a mild day. A police officer was nearby who inspected the vehicle, but did not find any evidence of a foreign object, such as a bullet or rock, etc. Toyota was contacted and was not aware of any defect with the window. The local dealer said that no incidents were reported by Toyota.

13 Side/rear Glass problem of the 2002 Toyota RAV4

By accident, I put my driver's side rear window approx. 1/2 way down . Unknowingly, I left the window down. When I reached an approximate speed of 40miles per hour, a very severe noise and vibration occurred. It was so severe, I pulled over to check the vehicle. I thought a tire had blown. The vibration and noise is very intense. Once the window is up, the noise and vibration stops. If a combination front/rear window down happens, it is not as noticable. I called Toyota, and they said it was a design flaw. Flaw or no, it is horrible. It could be tragic if a driver unaware pulls over quickly because they fear a tire is going to blow. At the minimum, I feel Toyota should send owners a letter describing the problem s they will not be alarmed. I will not put my rear windows down, and that in itself is sad to spend 23 thousand dollars on a new vehicle and be limited in that respect. Thanks for your attention to this matter. Linda jones.
