Driving at highway speed on an approximately 40 degree dry day with no extreme weather conditions. Heard a shotgun like noise at which point the sunroof shattered and glass fell into the drivers side and passenger side areas. Sunroof and wind shield were closed, screen was open. Pain resulted in ears and head however no lacerations were obtained. Falling glass onto driver and behind the car could have resulted in an accident with another vehicle. Cause unknown, no debris was seen or heard resulting in the shattering of the glass. Driver was able to pull over to the side of the road. Glass shattered around the edges and near the center of the sun roof, wind shield was open after incident, not prior.

Just like all the others, my rear hatch panel came off I was opening the trunk. I can't believe this isn't a recall. I never got the letter stating an extended warranty to replace this. Horrible. The only reason it hasn't come off prior to this is because I contort my body to open the trunk because I can tell it wants to come off. Well it finally did. Anyone that goes near that rear hatch panel with the emblem gets yelled at.
Our Toyota 2006 Scion Tc was involved in a head on collision when it was pulling out slowing on a main road and the other truck involved was probably traveling close to 45mph, the car was totaled but not one air bag worked. This car was purchased because it had a high safety rating, however it is just lucky the driver and passenger were not seriously hurt. Had the car not been totaled we would have insisted it be totaled, would never purchase another Toyota again.
Tl-the contact owns a 2008 Toyota scion. The contact stated that she was unable to open the hatchback door due to the backdoor garnish assembly separating from the vehicle. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 45,000. Pam.
I was driving east bound on the 105 fwy and was keeping a save distance going at approximately 45 mph since traffic was stop and go, when traffic stopped on front of me. I started to apply the brakes with little to no response and could not stop in time to avoid a collision with the vehicle on front of me. A few minutes before and prior to entering the freeway I had felt something similar on the street and thought it wasn't an issue, however the brakes felt as if they were not responding. The brakes began to respond once again and I proceeded to continue to drive. After the accident I thought that this may not be an isolated incident and thought of reporting this incident to make sure it's addressed for future Scion Tc owners. My car is now a total loss and my insurance didn't cover it. I'm now seeking for an alternate vehicle so I can continue my internship/work experience.
Moonroof shattered. Driving down the road under calm weather condition no road hazard.
The contact owns a 2005 Toyota scion. The contact stated that while loading items into the rear lift gate, the lift gate fell and struck the contact in the face. The contact sustained a fractured nose bridge and injuries to the face. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who inspected the lift gate and advised that the hydraulic system had failed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 99,000 and the current mileage was 100,000. The VIN was not available.
05 Scion Tc collided with another vehicle on the highway. After impact scion spun out of control and hit guard rail. Air bag in 05 scion did not deploy, driver of scion had an injured neck, bruise on left thigh and lump on forehead from hitting it in on steering wheel. Driver of scion was taken to the hospital, and has to undergo physical therapy due to neck injury.
The contact owns a 2005 Toyota Scion Tc. The contact stated that he attempted to open the rear hatch and the handle mechanism fractured and became detached from the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was unavailable. The failure and current mileage was 54,000.
While driving down the road at about 10-15 mph (going very slowly because it was a dirt road), I heard an extremely loud pop which sounded like a gunshot. Immediately stopping to inspect, I discovered that the moonroof had shattered completely. The webbing of the broken glass was more clearly visible from the inside than the outside. There was absolutely no sign of any impact. No other cars were around anywhere and nothing that could have hit the glass. As I countinued to drive home, the pieces began to fall into the back passenger seat and finally the whole thing started to fall inside. I called a local Toyota dealership and they told me a glass replacement would be $1158. 00. I had previously noticed that in my daily driving, whenever the car structure flexed in any way (as in on uneven terrain and sometimes even on highway or interstate driving), I would occasionally hear popping sounds as if there was some type of strain on the frame. I suspect some type of manufacturer defect, especially since I see that other people have experienced the same type problem with the moonroof or sunroof exploding without cause. On a different note, the rear hatch lift keeps falling off. In calling Toyota to complain about the moonroof issue, I was informed that they did issue a warranty enhancement for the hatch lift. I had received no information in the mail about the enhancement, but the representative said it must be because the vehicle was still registered under the previous owner in their system. Don't know how that happened since we purchased from a dealership and have the title.
I love my scion however I bought brand new from expressway Toyota in dorchester MA in 2005 and with all the recalls I see on here I've only done one, and that the glass windshield. Everyt other time I go the dealer and tell them that there are recalls, they ignore me and say that there isn't . I have some rattling noise going on under my car. . . I fixed once at the dealer and it came back again but now the dealer wants me to pay again to fix it and I think it's a safety concern in the car, the tires are also uneven, I keep having to change tires too often, the hatch lift in the back keeps breaking. . . Major failing and cheap. It feels like it was glued on. I would an answer from the dealer where I bought the car as to why they keep denying my visits on the recalls and why in being charge the same safety work that I've paid once to get fix and now the same rattling noise keeps coming. I never get any information in the mail from my dealer either informing me of these recalls. I guess they are refusing to fix them.
I was simply trying to open the rear hatch to my car and the plastic piece that holds the button to open the back broke off. I looked inside the plastic cover and it appeared as though the plastic piece itself had broken. My license plate light does not work now which is required by law in the state of texas so I can possibly get a ticket due to Toyota's gross negligence.
I was opening my trunk and the handle latch and light case fell right off. I am not a very strong individual so how this would happen to me completely stumps me. Since this incident I have noticed this exact problem on more and more Scion Tc's. I believe this is a structural body issue that the company should address.
My 2005 Toyota Scion Tc turned off while I was driving. I put vehicle in park and re started it. Moments later the brakes failed and I turned into a plaza. At that point the steering failed. I did not know the vehicle was on fire until this point. I had no control of the car so I reached back and grabbed my two year old who was strapped in her car seat. Right before we jumped out the car stopped completely ( tires melted) , the flames were visible in front of me and the car filled with smoke. We jumped out and ran. Moments later the entire car was in flames. Witnesses told me that I was on fire for a while and they turned around to get my attention. No injuries or fatalities were suffered with this fire but it was way too close for comfort.
I got out of my parked car and was going to put something in the trunk. As I went to open the trunk, the rear hatch piece, which has the scion emblem on it, tore away from the car. It seems the plastic pieces which held the piece on had snapped off as I opened the trunk.
The contact owns a 2008 Scion Tc. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, the hatchback latch became fractured during normal usage. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technician advised that the handle needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure and current mileage was 60,000.
Hatchback door handle broke off in my husband's hand when he was opening the hatch. The handle is made of thin plastic and broke off with normal pressure and use.
While driving at highway speeds (65 mph), I heard a loud "pop" followed by glass raining down around me. I pulled over and examined my car to find the perimeter of the sunroof entirely missing and the interior portion of the sunroof shattered. There were large chunks of glass inside the car along with pieces of metal. The sunroof was open at the time. The temperature was in the low 70s. There were no overpasses nor were there any trucks around me. There was no impact mark on the glass to indicate road debris.
The lift gate on the trunk broke off with minimal usage. It seems to be a recurring problem going back to the 2005 model. I have reviewed many complaints online. Its to bad they don't report it here. The dealers know this is a problem because when I went in to get it fixed the guy said without looking it up it would $425. 00 so he said it happens a lot. It is a major problem on these vehicles. Please check this out for us owners.
Back hatch door handle garnish just came off the vehicles rear hatch handle has a design flaw which makes the part fail. The rear hatch handle is fastened to the trunk/hatch with plastic clips. When the release button for the hatch is pressed, it only unlocks the hatch door. It does not spring upward like other vehicles. In the manual it shows to hold the release button and lift with the hatch handle. Because there are no springs to help lift it applies lots of pressure to the clips which weaken them. Eventually, they just snap. They are also known for snapping when the hatch is locked, in cold weather, and there are even reports of the release button melting. Replacement costs for this particular piece from the dealer is $170 for the handle and upward $200+ for labor. This price does not guarantee a permanent fix. This is the cost for the same faulty part. Because scion owners are aware of this, many have resorted to their own means of fixing which is where the safety issues arise. Scion calls this part an exterior garnish which implies it is for decorative purposes only and is not covered by warranty, but it is not just for looking at. This piece is a housing compartment for some vital components. Because scion knows about this, they should be held liable for putting their consumers at risk. Moonroof deflector shattered with a pop sound at speeds 55 with all windows closed. Later inspection that it was cracked around all the edges about 1/2 ~ 1 inches into the center.
My 2008 Scion Tc's rear truck handle has broken off. I have never opened my trunk in the past nor present with any forceful manner. This is a critical component to a vehicle and I have researched this issue to find that this production flaw by Toyota/scion has affected many.
The rear door handle of my 2007 Scion Tc snapped off when I opened it one day. This is poorly made and needs to be recalled.
Brakes feel hesitant to stop and slow down, feel like its a safety hazard because, my 17 year old son has to drive this car, and I need to feel that he has a safe, sturdy sort of transportation.

The rear hatch handle garnish broke off.
The plastic housing for the trunk release latch broke completly off when trying to open the hatch. The problem is that the latch is attached to the plastic housing and not the metal trunk. The service pers stated that the proper way to open the hatch is to grasp from the bottom lip and not the latch. This info isn't stated in the owners manual. The proper fix should be to modify the latch and attach directly to the metal part of the hatch.
There is a rattle noise coming from the rear left area around the hatch. This problem has been ongoing for years, and just realized many have reported the problem to Toyota online and a few complaints on your site. The rattle occurs when idle on a stop light, or idle somewhere. There appears to be something loose as you can hear a loose object when going over a pot hole or uneven road. The noise is a distraction and almost caused me to have several accidents as I try to identify where the noise is coming from. The noise can be very loud at time. Please make a recall on this issue since this problem appears to be a defect on the way the framing / body of the scion's was built.
The hatch back trunk handle is very flimsy and made out of plastic. The trunk never opens just by pression the release latch, it also requires to pull on the flimsy latch, which could cause it to break. I have had to already replace it once. I have seen many reports here and online of the same problem with other owners.
Defective trunk hatch handle, the handle broke on around November 2011, I strongly believe that it is manufacture defective and it is not meant to last. I"ve seen not just one, or two, or several, but a lot of cars with the same problem in the freeways; therefore, I believe that this is something that Toyota must pay and ask for a recall. Also, I considered dangerous because the handle is connected to the brake light and if there is any interference it can cause an accident.
The trunk handle on my broke off. Scion refuses to accept responsibility for this design defect. My husband glued it down, but my concern is that if the piece breaks off or detaches it could cause damage to another vehicle or injury. Scion representatives said that it isn't a design flaw, but rather user error from failure to open the latch properly. This is not the case, as I am now even more careful now that the latch is glued on. Even now when I am overly cautious to open the latch correctly, it still gets stuck and I'm concerned it will break again. Now that I have had the incident happen, I have seen 4 other scions in various places that have their handle taped up, most likely due to the same reason. I find it hard to believe that scion believes it is the consumer who is at fault when it is clearly a flaw in the designs of their vehicle, and they refuse to correct the issue unless you have dropped hundreds of dollars with them at their dealership for oil changes or other services.
Trunk broke off while opening vehicle. I am a 115lb female, seriously lacking the strength to break a well made car. Dealership refuses to fix defect without charge.
My 2006 Scion Tc trunk latch was hard to open. Then one day the whole assembly fell off. In checking with NHTSA it was revealed that there are several complaints of this issue. How do we get a re-call??.
