I was driving my 2005 Toyota Scion Tc at approximately 7am on an expressway at 55mph my sunroof closed as well as the shade cover both closed. I heard a loud pop followed by bits of glass falling in on me and the car through the top vent holes of the sunroof. I pulled over as soon as possible off the expressway to assess what had happened not an easy task when cars are doing speeds of 55-70+ . When I view the damage it appears that some how the front wind deflector of the sunroof had popped up and shattered the glass of the closed sunroof all around the edges along the track of the middle glass and it appears that it may have push the glass upward causing the middle glass to shatter and crumble inside the vehicle on to the shade cover that thankfully was closed leaving about an 8x4 inch whole in the glass and the rest of glass cracked and crumbly with chunks of glass on the inside as well as outside the car. Extremely dangerous but very thankful it did not cause serious injury to myself or anyone driving on the road with me. I brought the car to my dealer and they claim the car was hit by something that shattered the glass and told me to contact my insurance company to do the repair. After reading about the numerous other complaints for the exact same problem I will be returning to the dealer today to further argue my point , no repair made at this time . My concern is that I have read that people have had multiple incidents after repairing the damage . There is no doubt there is a major flaw in the design of the sunroof . There was a recall on the wind deflector that involved putting some type of film over the deflector that would prevent it from cracking if hit by debris while open stopping it from breaking apart and flying off. I had that recall done in 2007 . I was told now that this incident had nothing to do with the recall issue, I disagree I believe the recall should have been for the mechanics of the wind deflector it some how was forced to open up.

While driving on the beltway (495 north), my Scion Tc moonroof shattered and the glass fell on me and on the inside of the car. My moonroof was fully opened at the time. Neither the deflector nor the stationary moonroof (which is located above the backseat) shattered but only the retractable moonroof. There was no impact from inside the car that caused the moonroof to shatter nor did I hear or see any rock or debris hit the outside of the car before it shattered and exploded into the car. I was driving on the highway and heard a loud explosion of glass which was falling all around me. I pulled over to figure out what happened and then I immediately called the salesperson who sold me the car. I purchased the car new in may 2008 from laurel Toyota/carmax. This was the only time that this occurred. I took the car to the dealership the next day. The service manager looked at the moonroof and told me it was an insurance matter. He never asked me what happened; he only looked at the moonroof. I was very concerned about the safety issue of having a moonroof explode for no reason so I insisted on seeing the general manager of carmax laurel. He showed concern and wanted to rule out any safety hazard so he said he would have a Toyota representative come and look at the car to see if there was a defect. The Toyota representative is scheduled to look at my car sometime today but I was told by carmax that I was not allowed to meet with the rep because he only deals with the dealership and not the customer. I told them that was unfortunate because the rep would not be able to make a determination without speaking to the person who had a first-hand account of what happened. I am waiting to hear from Toyota/scion about their decision to address the safety issue concerning my 2008 Scion Tc.

Around 10 months ago I was driving down interstate 27 with my sunroof completely closed. There were no other vehicles around me. Suddenly I heard a loud noise, I swerved a quite bit and then I noticed glass was falling on my head. I looked up to see my sunroof was gone. I immediately went to the dealership where they replaced the glass on warranty. Since it was replaced at no charge to me I was satisfied. The second incident happened last Saturday night (9-16-06). I was driving home with the sunroof closed. There were no other cars around. We heard a quieter noise that sounded like glass shattering; we looked at all the windows but saw nothing wrong. The next day I noticed that the wind deflector was completely shattered. Most of the pieces of glass were still there except the leading edge of the glass. I've had the plastic film put on the car according to the recall but it isn't completely effective because there is glass missing. The dealership wouldnt replace the part on warranty. I am now in a dispute with scion to get them to replace the deflector. My car is still under warranty yet they won't replace the defective part stating that they have a policy against replacing glass for any reason. I have tried for a week now to resolve this with scion. They have told me that a representative will call me the next business day yet they dont call me. I have told them every time that I called that I cant drive my car until this has been resolved. . Read more...
My boyfriend and I were driving my car on a clear, sunny day at highway speeds with the air conditioner running and all windows closed on I-495 in maryland, when we heard a loud pop. Thinking that there was something wrong with the car or the tires I pulled to the side of the road where I then discovered that it was the moon roof wind deflector shattered. Glass was falling in though the cover for the moonroof on our head. We ended up switching places and taking the back roads to the dealership. I called them and let them know what happened and found that they were very accusatory. We explained that we had not passed under any overpasses and no debris were observed either visually or heard while in the car coming from the road or another car. Once dropping it off they tried to make me feel as if it was me and that my insurance may have to handle it. After a month of dealing with them they returned the car with a new moon roof and freshly painted rear spoiler. Recently I found an article in the wall street journal stating that Toyota motor corp in recalling 71,000 05-06 Scion Tc's. That was a huge relief to me, seeing as the dealership made it seem that it was a very limited problem and only a few cases have come about.

1) I was sitting in a restaurant parking lot with only my ac running when and all of a sudden my sunroof just shatters. No reason for the glass to shatter, had not opened the sunroof in 3 to 4 days, nothing hit the sunroof at anytime, and I was motionless when the glass shattered. 2) when the glass shattered pieces of glass rained down onto me inside my vehicle. I had a few cuts but nothing major. If I would have been driving when this happened I feel there could have been major problems and possibly glass in my eyes. 3) the dealership replaced the glass, but only after I had to argue that they pay for the repairs because I had only had the car for just under 2 weeks. Now there is additional damage caused by the glass that I have to try to get fixed. Email reply on may 17, 2006 confirmed that it was the sun/moon roof (not the wind deflector) that shattered.
