On February 24, 2013, I was opening my trunk like normal and the entire plastic piece snapped in half and dangled from the back of my car via the wiring that powers the lights above the license plate. Basically, the hydraulics that is supposed to open the trunk is worthless and doesn't even pick up the weight of the trunk until it is two-thirds of the way open. I rarely use my trunk because I usually just toss everything into the back seat. I would say that after owning my car for almost five years, I've maybe opened the trunk 50 times, if that. Toyota issued a service bulletin stating they know that the piece has extreme potential to break but refuses to issue a recall on the piece. For the thousands of scion users outside their warranty period, we are faced with the cost of ensuring the safety of ourselves and fellow drivers because of a poorly manufactured, plastic garnish designed by Toyota as a means to enter the trunk. My piece is currently duct taped back together and covers the brake lights above the piece. Other owners face the issue of the lights above their license plate not working which makes them in violation of traffic laws that required an illuminated license plate. A Toyota service bulletin states that the part needs to be replaced with an ?improved garnish? as detailed in service bulletin s-sb-0001-10 dated January 6, 2010. As of January 6, 2010, I was still in my warranty period with scion and could have had the piece replaced without the hassle of going back and forth with scion customer service. If Toyota issued a service bulletin for the piece, they must realize the shoddy engineering of the garnish. Moreover, I firmly believe that scion and Toyota should recall the trunk garnish in order to ensure that scion owners across the united states won't be faced with the same headache and potential dangers.

I have had my 2009 Scion Tc for just about 2 years now, back in February I was just doing some grocery shopping, went to open the trunk and the whole trunk release handle fell off,and now is just connected by wires which is a distraction to drivers behind me and also covers the license plate which I'm sure is just cause for me to get a traffic fine. I took it to the dealership where I bought it and they said its not under warranty, even though I have a full warranty left on my car for 100,00 miles. This is an outrage that this part isn't covered for manufacture defects and poor workmanship, this should not fall apart after 2 years, and it clearly should be recalled. . If Toyota wants to keep selling cars, they need to make good on fixing this problem. . My car has a warranty on it so I should not have to pay out of pocket for something that shouldn't have fallen off so easily!!!! poor manufacturing. . . . . . . . And with all the complaints I've read about people having the same problem, Toyota should definitely be taking care of there customers if they want future customers!!!!!!!!.

Hello I went to my car to get my grocery out of the trunk and when I went to open the truck the hatch handle clips broke I contacted scion they said there aren't any complaints and because I hadn't had my car service at scion dealership I wasn't showing brand loyalty so they can't help me, with this part being broken their isn't a way to get into the trunk.
During the normal course of opening the rear hatch, the entire panel snapped off due to plastic clips that have become brittle. I have attempted to fix it but no fix seems to be permanent and, through additional research, I have seen that this is a common issue with most tcs and is clearly a design flaw. In order to replace the hatch release, the cost is upwards of $350. The handle just broke again today. With the number of issues surrounding this part, there should be a recall by Toyota/scion as they are responsible for the inadequate hatch release parts.
Vehicle struck highway 99 center guard rail (at a 45 degree angle) on passenger front bumper traveling approximately 65 miles per hour (spin) then reversed spin slamming rear bumper of vehicle into same guard rail. Vehicle has front (driver and passenger) and side airbags, not one airbag deployed. According to the vehicle safety features, the front airbags should have deployed.

The lip covering the trunk hatch on these cars is defective and should be recalled. It is a cheap plastic piece held on with plastic clips that break! Toyota needs to own up to this and fix it. They know about the issue and let it go on for five years until they changed the parts being used.
I just purchased my 2007 Scion Tc five days ago. And last night (day 4) as I went to manually lift up the trunk from the handle area the whole area popped off car! I was not using excessive force of any kind. I know the vehicle was not like this prior because I had just been to the grocery store the previous night. Luckily I was just leaving my parents house when this happened so I was able to quick fix it with some clear packaging tape. But now it looks very tacky and cheap. Since I live in las vegas, nv. I don't think that this will be an adequate long term solution because of the extreme temperature changes & rains.
The hatch handle, including the lighting for the license plate, fell off with normal use. While this does not endanger the passengers in the car, it is illegal to drive without the lights and gives the possibility of the driver being fined for the vehicle not being build properly. The plastic on the inside of the handle is not able to handle the heat of being in a parking lot for 2 years, and fell of during normal use.
I was driving approximately 65 mph on a highway during a somewhat cold, wet evening when all of the sudden my sunroof shattered. At the time I was not using my sunroof and it was completely closed. Unfortunately my sun shade was not closed and as a result I experienced a shower of glass while driving on the highway surrounded by moderate traffic. This could have caused a major accident! the noise that came from the sunroof was similar to a small handgun going off in my car and for a minute or so I thought someone had taken a shot at me. After searching throughout my car for evidence of any type of road debris that might have caused this I could find none. Right now I am driving around without a sunroof and without the money to pay for the repair. This sunroof mechanism was designed poorly and I have read many other complaints and case descriptions similar to mine.
I purchased my tc in September of 2010. . . I notice afterwards that it rattles in the back, loud while going down the road. . . And it is so annoying. I've tried everything to get it to stop. Also, sitting still with the car not in neutral it makes this loud rattle on the left side close to the gas tank. . What the heck???.
I have a 2005 Scion Tc that I purchase brand new from the factory. Recently I had my handle latch broken from normal use. I lifted it like you would normally do and it just snapped (broke). I then realized that it was framed or made with thin plastic that wouldn't last long on the car itself because if you apply normal pressure by opening it, the handle is not made to handle such pressure by the weight of the truck and glass. It's a hatch back. I notice numerous complaints from other Scion Tc owners on several blogs and websites. I have not attempted to fix it because I'm looking at parts alone $180 without labor. I was wondering if there's anything I could do besides filing a complaint. Thank you.

I have a 2006 Toyota Scion Tc and the rear hatch back handle just completely came off. The car has close to 45000 miles on it. I never use force to open the hatch back, never had any issue with it at all. Then last week I simply went to open the hatch and off came the entire panel with the handle. It was crazy I have pictures of it just hanging by the wires for the back lights. I took to dealership they denied to fix even with my platinum warranty package. I am very upset I feel this is not my problem. The manager at the dealer even said he sees this all the time. I have read on plenty of websites that people are having same problem. People honk at me when I drive to let me know it's hanging. Right after it happened I got honked at on the freeway and it's distracting to myself and others. I really want this to be recalled for myself and others.
Incident occurred on 9/30/08 at ~3:15pm. I heard a loud bang (sounded like a shotgun blast) while driving on the highway at ~60mph. My immediate reaction was to duck. . . I literally thought someone was shooting at me. After a quick second to collect my wits, I looked around and saw no damage. Once that "soaked" in, I realized I heard wind noise (I remember thinking that was odd because windows were up and sunroof was closed). I pulled back the sunroof screen and, to my astonishment, saw that the sunroof had spiderwebbed into thousands of tiny pieces. . . Pieces that were already starting to fly off into traffic behind me. I pulled over and got out to look at the damage. The sunroof looked like something had blasted it from the inside out. I cleaned up the glass the best I could on the side of the highway and headed straight for the dealer. I had heard of deflector shattering (recall was completed on my deflector), but not the sunroof. The dealer refuses to pay for the sunroof even though I have the extended warranty. They claim that it was caused by a road hazard. The weather was mild, nothing hit my sunroof from the outside and, based on similar instances filed here, I firmly believe there is a defect with the design. Toyota should do the right thing, fix this issue and honor their warranties.
On 9/23/07 I was in an accident while driving my 2006 Scion Tc. The front end of my car hit the passenger side of another car. I had been at a stop and had just proceeded into the intersection about 20 feet when we hit, so I could not have been going more than 15-20 mph. The other driver's speed is unknown, although the posted speed limit is 35 mph. The entire front end of my car was ripped off and the frame was pushed back. The body shop estimated the damage to be well over $11,750 so the insurance company declared it a total loss. Damage to the other vehicle was minor. Not one of my 6 airbags ever deployed even though the force of the crash was enough to demolish the car and throw me against the driver's side door.
Windshield is cracking under normal circumstances.
Driving 45 mph at night, heard a loud crack, pulled over and found the wind deflector had shattered(seems like it was struck by a small rock?). Fragments of deflector glass were missing, but thankfully it doesn't seem like any cars behind were hit with the fragments. Took it to the dealership after a week when being ignored by email and phone, both sent me in a loop(parts dept tells me it's cover under warranty and sends me to service dept, service dept said it is not cover in the warranty and sends me back to the parts dept), they were trying to ignored the issue, and didn't bother to try and help fix the failure. Said the recall affected 05-06 models only so any similar issues with 07 is not covered. Called a 2nd dealership about costs estimates, same loop. It was very difficult to get hold of the information to fix this, eg. Parts and labor cost.
I have a 2006 Toyota Scion Tc and the rear hatch back handle just completely came off. The car has close to 23,000 miles on it. I never use force to open the hatch back, never had any issue with it at all. One day I simply went to open the hatch and off came the entire panel with the handle. People honk at me when I drive to let me know it's hanging. (this is exactly the same as several people I know own tc's). Right after it happened I got honked at on the freeway and it's distracting to myself and others. I really want this to be recalled for myself and others.
2005 Scion Tc hatch handle broke from normal use.
I purchased my car at the end of Nov in 04, about a week after I noticed a ton of scratches on my vehicle. I took it to the dealer and had the gm look at it, no help. I made an appointment and they said they would look at it. Still has not been looked at and it is now Jan of 05. My car has over 500 small scratches and the clear coat is bubbling off the paint. I have done a lot of research and found this is a big problem with the 2005 Scion Tc. I was treated like a complete moron and no one wanted to help me and I was dismissed out the door.
