1 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 05/16/2013

Toyota Sequoia 2003 - within months of taking new car delivery, vsc abs and trac lights would blink intermittently and on occasion the auto would decelerate. As the issue was intermittent, dealership was unwilling/unable to diagnose. Trouble would continue with less frequent deceleration but more frequent warning light illumination until, after a few years, the warning lights stayed on and involuntary deceleration seemed to cease. Two different factory dealerships provided two different diagnoses. One said yaw sensor and other sensors need replacement (out of warranty); the other, more recently said that brake booster and actuator need replacement (out of warranty). Vehicle continues to brake normally and abs does function keeping the SUV steerable during panic stops. Traction and stability control issues were not tested by this driver. Search of internet based user groups shows this problem common in earlier year Sequoia/tundra models. Costs of repairs range from $1600 for yaw sensors to $3700 for brake booster and actuators. Toyota USA is unresponsive unless repairs are undertaken and makes no warranty of cooperation should repairs prove ineffective or unnecessary. This appears to be an ongoing issue with this and other 2003 Toyota Sequoia sr5 and limited models.

2 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 02/06/2013

The contact owns a 2003 Toyota Sequoia. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vsc trac, vsc and the abs warning lights illuminated. The contact mentioned that when she attempted to engage the brakes, the brake seized, causing the vehicle to slide across the pavement. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The technician diagnosed that the sensor position for the steering angle sensor needed to be replaced and the electronic control unit needed to be updated. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but did not offer any assistance since the vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 10v176000 (electronic stability control, traction control system). The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 120,000 and the current mileage was 130,000.

4 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 08/17/2012

Vsc trac, vsc off, brake, abs lights. . . All on, all at once. There is obviously a quality control issue with these that Toyota does not want to be on the hook for. Many others went to the national highway safety program and filed a complaint. If they get enough of these they will go to the manufacturer and issue a recall. ## VIN passed ## Toyota Sequoia 2003 ##.

5 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 08/07/2012

My vsc off and vsc trac lights says on and my abs light is also on as well.

6 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 05/25/2012

I just bought this used 2003 Toyota Sequoia on may 25, 2012. I noticed the warning lights indicating a defective traction control system and abs system on my way home from the dealership. They assured me the system works fine and that it has something to do with the computer module. All the following warning lights are on at the same time: trac, vsc off, and abs lights. I also checked the vehicle history on the Toyota website and it is recorded that the Toyota dealer worked on this problem on 07/23/2009 when the car had 97,187 miles. I have done a lot of research on this and it seems 50,000 Sequoia's were recalled for this problem, however, my Sequoia's VIN was not on the list. Please help. In addition the lighting on the dashboard does not work.

7 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2012

Vsc trac vsc off abs warning lights are on, took it to the dealer and had the brake booster replaced the warning lights returned, searching the net many other Toyota owners have seen this problem, this should be a recall since braking is a safety issue.

8 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 12/29/2011

I recently purchased a 2003 Sequoia and have become aware that the vsc trac, vsc off, abs lights always remain on. My mechanic ran the codes and has advised me that I need a new deceleration sensor. After some research online I see that I am not alone and so would like to voice my concern about this faulty sensor and ask that Toyota give a response to why so many vehicles of this era have this specific problem.

9 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 10/11/2011

One day the vsc trac, vsc off, brake, abs lights all came on the dash, shortly after this happened we received a recall notice in the mail stating this exact problem. So I made an appointment at our local Toyota dealership for them to look at it and fix. The first time I dropped it off for the day they called after and said the machine to test the vehicle was down, and that it would be a day or two before it was repaired, well I needed my vehicle so I went a picked it up. About a month later I made another appointment and returned to the dealership where they finally tested my vehicle and proceeded to tell me that my vehicle did not fit the criteria for VIN identification. I really do not know how this is possible considering all the information stated on the recall is exactly what is wrong with my vehicle. After days of research I have learned that multiple sensors and ecu needs to be replaced costing in the range of $2000. 00 plus dollars. Also I have read multiple consumer complaints just like this one. These lights are on the vehicle for a reason and Toyota put the recall out for a reason so fix the problems!!!!.

10 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 06/18/2010

2003 Toyota Sequoia, vsc and abs lights came on and off several times @ 20k miles and now @ 80k miles. First time @ 20 k miles, dealer didn't find any problem so they said I might forget to tighten the gas cap. . . But now after 5 years, the vsc and abs light started popping up again when I was driving 60 mile/hour, I have brought the CA to dealer and this time they have charged me almost $ 500 to get these lights came off including a series of unnecessary parts replacing and tune up. Less than one month, these lights - vsc and abs came on again, brought back to dealer, they said it failed for another code which require another $ 500 to get it fixed. I was frustrated so I took the car back home, but I still feel unsafe when driving it. I think Toyota should consider this issue and recall since so many customers have reported a similar issue - vsc and abs light intermittent issue.

11 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 05/17/2010

I have a 2003 Toyota Sequoia. The vcs and abs lights have come on. The abs system is not working. The Toyota dealer wants $3800 to replace vcs ecu. My vehicle was not covered under the recent recall but it should have been. The brakes currently work but feel different when braking.

12 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2009

The contact owns a 2003 Toyota Sequoia. The vsc, trac off, and abs light was illuminated on the instrument control panel. The vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealership. The current and failure mileages were 108000.

13 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 05/24/2009

I have had an issue with my 2003 Toyota Sequoia. The abs and vsc trac lights came on. I have searched online to find out about this problem and have found it to be a habitual problem. On the morning of may 24 I had a collision with a deer. All four brakes locked up and I went into a skid and hit the deer. The things that I have read is its a electrical problem but it is not. Toyota has an issue here that puts its owners in an unsafe situation. This needs to be fixed. If there were habitual seat belt issues or airbag issues this would be taken care of. This is a major safety issue because I though I had working abs brakes and due to some kind of design failure I did not.

14 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2008

2003 Toyota skid control computer, I am writing to request that a formal complaint be filed to Toyota. I recently took my car into my local Toyota dealership because of a few lights that we on in my dash. The specific lights were the vsc, vsc off and the abs lights. After doing some research I see that this is a fairly common problem with Toyota and their skid control computers. The problem is that it is not covered under the powertrain warranty and is a very expensive part to have replaced. My quote was for $1800 excluding tax. I purchased the vehicle with 47,000 miles and was offered an extended warranty up to 60,000, but it was a very expensive extended warranty so I decided to pass. The manufactures warranty for my car was 55,000 miles I believe and the lights came on at 55,500 miles. . . . Of course. I sincerely hope that there can be some sort of resolve for this such as a recall of the skid control computer or changing this issue to be covered under the power train section of the warranty as it is unfair for there to be so many people to be having the same problem around the same mileage and some of those people have serious consequences to the computers malfunction such as accidents and possible death. Please take whatever action necessary to solve this unnecessary issue.

15 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 07/15/2008

Traction control light, skid control light, abs light and check engine light all just came on while driving down the road. No previous problem noted.

16 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 07/10/2008

Tl- the contact owns a 2003 Toyota Sequoia. The contact stated that the vsc skid control warning light, abs warning light and the service stability traction control warning lights randomly kept illuminating as the failure was progressing. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who reflashed the ecu and the failure recurred. The contact took the vehicle into the dealer several times and they did not address the recall repair since mid 2008 to 2015. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer for further inspection and diagnosis. The contact was also included in NHTSA campaign id number: (air bags) and was waiting for the part from the dealer to receive the recall repair appointment. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 89,000. Dyd.

17 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 06/05/2008

Toyota Sequoia 2003, vtrac and abs lights came up on the dash during a very wet interstate trek to michigan from California. Had no cruise control before this, the cruise control failed the year before during the same wet trek across country! the Toyota dealer in saginaw michigan told us that the computer controlling the vtrac and abs was displaying fault codes and needed to be replaced, cost $1200. This is a 5 year old vehicle with 70k miles on it now (the fault happened around 66k miles) which is now much harder to handle under heavy braking, which we need more and more with the low quality drivers out there. If the gas prices weren't so high, this truck would be out of here here, but we can't afford to sell it for the current value, and buy another vehicle, so this SUV will now be limited to trips where we need the storage/towing capacity. So, even though we have 2 cars, we only really have 1 1/2 now.

18 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 02/18/2008

Abs, vsc, and trac lights illuminated on engine start and will not extinguish. Dealer ran codes, claims faulty master cylinder pressure sensor, stroke sensor, yaw rate sensor, and skid ecu: $2777. 50. Vehicle mileage 69872. At approx 48k miles similar event with addition of engine light, replaced O2 sensor and resolved. Much experience with aircraft abs tells me very unlikely all sensors and computers fail simultaneous but dealer sticking to script, claims first ever seen this type problem.

19 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2008

Vsc/abs skid control ecu failure on 2003 Sequoia @ 56,410 miles (orignal owner). Ecu failure is a known issue by every Toyota Sequoia owner, but Toyota claims it's limited. This failure requires that vsc/abs skid control ecu / yaw rate sensor be replaced. The repair cost was $794. 20 for part and labor at the local Toyota dealer. Now, considering the severity of the defect and number of complaints on this site im very suprized not to see a recall notice to date.

20 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 09/25/2007

Vsc/abs skid control ecu failure. The dealership is saying that my 2003 Toyota Sequoia limited 2 wd 53,500 miles needs a new abs computer at a cost of $3,600. Approximately 2 years ago I had the exact same thing happen, the car actually froze up and the dealership had it towed to their location to fix it, they said it was the third member and replaced that. Now the same thing is happening and they won't do anything.

21 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 08/14/2007

2003 Toyota Sequoia (2wd) without warning the vsc/trac system engaged while turning on dry pavement causing a loss in acceleration. This was the initial incident which was followed by multiple other incidents at random intervals. Incidents occurred while making both left and right turns from a turning or stopping position. Trac off "button" does not disengage the system as indicated in the owner's manual from a low speed. Local dealership ran diagnostic test and recommended new tires/brakes but could not identify any "problems" with the vsc system other than the vsc system had engaged. After 4 new tires and new rear brakes were installed service tech drove vehicle and experienced the issue. He recommended documenting when the incidents occurred and under what circumstances in order to determine repair options. The vsc system continues to engage randomly causing a loss in acceleration when this occurs and is dangerous if driver has need to pull into traffic in instances such as turning onto major roadways.

22 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 07/19/2007

My vsc/trac sensor has been going on and off and every time I needed to have it check, the problem never appears. Except for today, the light has stayed on and my mechanic was able to diagnosed and verified it with Toyota's TSB as a defective vsc/trac ecu and he recommended that I take it to a dealer for the replacement and installation of the new ecu. Several TSB's are posted on the NHTSA website regarding this problem for my vehicle year and make. My complaint is, I feel that it is unacceptable that a computer device that plays a vital role in the safety performance of the vehicle should not have failed within 5 years, especially for a considerable cost to have it replace after the warranty period. Toyota should have at least sent out notices to the owners regarding this potential problem.

23 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 07/03/2007

The trac off and vsc trac light are on on my 2003 Toyota Sequoia with only 46,422 miles. Skid control will kick in even when driving less than 5 mph. Engine also stalled once out on busy street as skid control kicked in. Dealer diagnostic indicated bad skid control computer so abs and skid features will not function properly. This seems to be a common problem with 2001-2002 and early 2003 Toyota Sequoia.

24 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 05/31/2007

My 2003 Toyota Sequoia has had multiple failures of it abs ecu translate. The abs ecu translate has been replaced twice and had been into the dealership six times without a resolution to the problem. The brake warning light has come on mutiple times.

25 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 02/20/2007

Vsc/abs skid control ecu failure on 2003 Sequoia. Ecu failure is a known issue by every Toyota Sequoia owner, but Toyota claims that it's not an issue. This failure requires that vsc/abs skid control ecu be replaced at a cost of $1300 - $2100 depending on location. This should be recalled by the manufacturer or, by government intervention due to the severity of the defect and the potential for accidents and/or death resulting from the defective computer system causing the vehicle to lock up and lose power.

26 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2006

The contact owns a 2003 Toyota Sequoia. The contact stated while driving the vehicle his vsc light andthe abs light would come on. The contact stated that it does not matter how fast he is going for this to happen. He contacted the dealer and they told him it was a computer malfunction. The failure mileagewas 30,000 and the current mileage was 90,000. The VIN was not available.

27 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2006

: the contact stated the abs light illuminated constantly. Also, while driving at 30 mph on wet roads, the vehicle skidded when the brake pedal was depressed. The vehicle was taken to a service dealer who determined that the vehicle stability control was defective. Updated 9/13/2006 - the deceleration sensor was replaced. The vehicle extended warranty did not cover the cost of the replacement.

28 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 12/04/2004

Trac, vsc, brake light had been coming on and then going out. This particular incident involved them coming on during a turn into traffic at which time all power was lost nearly causing an accident. Dealer treated this as 2 different problems:an induction service was performed for the "hesitation" at my expense, and a brake booster gasket and assembly were installed under the warranty. The lights continued to go off and on from time to time, but the car did not lose power again after this "fix". The lights continued to come on and off intermittently until in August 2006 the check engine light and vcs/trac lights came on and would not go out. This time, my dealer replaced the oxygen sensor at my expense. Now, with 70,000 miles on 9-26-07 the vsc/trac & check engine lights came on while traveling on the road and will not go out on turning off the engine as they sometimes did in the past. I believe after reading all the complaints about this problem on various internet sites some sort of action should be taken at Toyota's expense. I am also filing a report about the new rear window motor and hatch release handle I had to replace in July on this vehicle which also is mentioned in many reports I've read on the internet. I can't tell you how many failures on the light situation I've had because they've been in the dozens.

29 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 09/10/2004

While consumer was driving the check engine light/trac light, and abs braking light appeared on the dashboard and remained on. Then, vehicle stalled. Consumer was unable to restart vehicle, and had vehicle towed to dealer for inspection. Mechanic determined that the battery needed to be replaced. Consumer informed mechanic that this problem recurred and had not been resolved.
