1 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 01/20/2024

Traction control warning lights, vsc warning lights. These lights have been on for 2 years, resulting in check engine light on. I have replaced every sensor possible, fuses, gas cap, and reset the system multiple times but can not get these lights to stay off. Since lights have been on, when driving on a muddy, wet, icy or slippery road way, my steering locks up, the brakes stop working and there is complete loss of vehicle control. All without warning. This is an extreme hazard and very dangerous. This has been on going since 2017 and is still a major problem . It started at around 200,000 miles.

2 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 08/31/2023

Unknown I'm unsure of what is causing it but it is a very common issue with the 03-04 Sequoia. The brake light will come on like on mine and apparently it's a failure in one of the brake components. It's either the brake booster or the master cylinder in most cases is starting to g out. I've done research on this issue and it's a very common problem costing people thousands to get fixed. I feel like if it's that huge of a problem like I've seen with Sequoia owners than it's needs to be addressed in a better manner.

3 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 07/20/2022

"vsc off, vsc trac, and abs" indicators on the dash. Yaw sensor failure which controls wheel speed which will cause vehicle to decelerate and possibly cause an accident. Toyota should issue a nationwide recall. Toyota is aware of the issue but has failed to issue a nationwide recall.

4 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 05/09/2019

I have had persistent problems with the front brakes rotors warping. New ones do not last very long before they warp. My vehicle has approximately 155,000 miles. My I have asked my trusted service mechanics to use Toyota parts. The dealership parts department told my mechanics that they do not recommend replacing the rotor with a the original Toyota part as they have been warping. They recommend up sizing the rotors, which is what Toyota has done on some vehicle. I have talked to a Toyota service department about replacing the front rotors and brakes. They gave me a quote but said they would not give any warranty on brakes. I talked to Toyota's 800 number they said there were no recalls or eligible upgrades and that my vehicle was not part of the campaign they had for the brakes. They would not elaborate if any of the 2003 Sequoias were part of the campaign. They gave me a case number. My primary concern is that the brakes or brake components are undersized which is manifested by the repeat warping of the rotors. The undersized brakes could be a hazard under certain circumstances.

5 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2018

Tl the contact owns a 2003 Toyota Sequoia. While driving 55 mph, the contact approached a stop light and the emergency brake indicator illuminated and the vehicle would not stop. The brake pedal extended to the floorboard. The contact pumped the brake pedal and was able to bring the vehicle to a stop. The contact pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road and turned it off. When the vehicle was restarted, the contact regained control. The vehicle was driven to the dealer (frontier Toyota, 23621 creekside rd, valencia, CA 91355), but no failure could be found and the vehicle was deemed to be in good standing. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The contact stated that the failure occurred a total of four times in the past eleven years regarding the emergency brake illumination and the vehicle not being able to stop. There were no recalls associated with the vehicle. The failure mileage was 135,000.

6 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 08/23/2016

I have a 2003 Sequoia with 253,000 miles on it. About a month ago, while driving on a flat, dry road at about 30 miles per hour and slowing for an upcoming stoplight, my vsc off, vsc trac and check engine lights all suddenly came on. Apparently this is a known issue with this year vehicle. I am struggling now to figure out how l will afford to take this car in for repair and l am angered at being put in this position. This was an expensive, luxury SUV when we bought it and the manufacturer should own up to this bad part. If I'd wanted a crappy made car, l wouldn't have wasted $40k on this one.

7 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 08/14/2016

I went outside and turned the car on and noticed that the abs, vsc off, and vsc trac dashboard lights came on and did not turn off. I drove the vehicle around the block and the lights remained on. This is a known manufacturer defect with the computer that controls the abs / vsc trac system on the 2003 Sequoia. I have had the computer modules replaced for this issue before and 60,000 miles later the same parts have gone out again. It is unsafe to drive an SUV with the vehicle skid control and abs systems not functioning.

8 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 05/16/2016

I just had to spend over 1,200 to have this repaired as my local Toyota dealership insisted it was routine ear and tear. My breaks would not work, and I just had new ones put on 09/2015, and the vsp light kept coming on and off. The car jumps, and something has not been right. I almost hit someone and had to use the emergency break to stop!.

9 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 04/15/2016

The 2003 sequioa frame is rust is eating away the frame. We paid a lot of money for this vechicle. Would Toyota standby there vechicle and replace this frame or we have pay for replacement .

10 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 10/05/2014

My vehicle has an issue with the abs skid control. When the mechanic ran the check it came back with error codes c1203, c1223, c1247. I purchased hated this vehicle because I have a growing family and I needed the third row seating. The problem with the braking system happens when I have to stop quickly, which is a a safety concern. I believe there is an issue with the computer and the skid control or anti locking brakes.

11 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 09/17/2014

I have been having this issue with the electronic stability control with my truck for several months. I have taken it to the dealer 3 times and they have been unable to determine what the problem is. They first told me I had to replace my shocks and springs all the way around. That didn't fix the problem. As far as I can tell they don't have any fault codes to work with from the computer. I live on a windy road in the mountains. Everytime I go around a turn, which is all of my road, the traction control kicks on, the brake peddle pulses and the breaks grind until I come out of the turn and my wheels are straight. Just in time for the next turn. This is very dangerous. I can't stop my truck fast if a deer or other wildlife runs across the road. This happens all the time.

12 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 07/15/2014

Parking brake disintegrated into a pile of parts. I had had the brake replaced twice, and was determined to find out how this could have happened when I drive and brake normally. I had 6 mechanics look at it extensively until the last one figured it out. What we determined: 2003 Sequoia's brake design swivels the gripping "wings" (c-shaped) from one single pin (or point) to grip the center to hold the car in place. This design allows these two "wings" to catch on each other. Since this happens every time I release the parking brake and go in reverse, I am forced to go "forward", to unhitch these two pieces, in order to back up. (newer designs use two pins for the two brake "wings", so they do not catch on each other. ) I have learned the only way around this was to always park in a place that I can pull forward. Since that is not usually possible, I am not able to set the parking brake most times. I end up relying on my engine to hold the car in gear to keep it from rolling. . . Not a safe way to park! I do believe there was a recall on something like this, but they missed my 2003 model. This is a safety issue since my engine may not stay in gear one of these moments. Can anyone help?.

13 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 05/10/2014

Tree lights came on, svc, track off and abs. That will cost around $1150. Plus taxes. That I think is not right because it's been many complains about this matter. And for this mileage it shouldn't be the time please we need help because if we get minimum wage than we won't be able to afford it. Please help.

14 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 03/26/2014

I received a recall notice from Toyota for undercarriage rusting. I took my vehicle to the dealership for treatment. They kept the vehicle overnight and I picked it up the next day. Six months later (I'm not sure exactly when it happened because we have more than one vehicle), while driving the Sequoia, which I never had problems with before, I smelled something burning as I drove the vehicle and thought that with the new treatment it was just burning off the excess. However, the vehicle began to shake, I looked under the vehicle and noticed that the brake rotors had rusted to the point that I could rub my hand on them and rub the metal off. I called the dealer to ask them what the vehicle had been treated with because in all the years that I had the vehicle the rotors had never rusted. I was told "it wasn't caused by what they did" and that they "see rusted rotors all the time", but was never told what chemicals were used in the treatment. I have to pay to have the entire brake assembly replaced on all wheels to make the vehicle safe again. I'm to believe that it is just a coincidence that the first and only time that this happened is within six months of the "undercarriage rust treatment" that I was told had to be applied to prevent rust by Toyota. I believe the rust inhibitor treatment is fraudulent and causes other problems with the vehicles such as mine.

15 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2014

Upon normal driving the vehicle would not accelerate accurately and quickly enough after making a left turn. The vehicle would also randomly illuminate 3 indicator lights when the brake pedal is depressed. The 3 indicators are brake, trac off, vsc off. Before these lights illuminate the vehicle's brake pedal would become very hard to press causing the brake pedal to require much more force applied to it thus causing a decrease in stopping distance which is a very serious safety issue.

16 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 09/03/2013

Received Toyota factory recall for corrosion-resistant compound due to excessive frame rust. Called local dealer and also factory Toyota for appointment. Took the vehicle in to the dealership. One day later received phone call that my vehicle was safe and that they had sprayed this coating on the vehicle. I picked up vehicle and this corrosive chemical is dripping of the vehicle and is not drying. Concerned for environment and also, I have no idea of how vehicle was inspected assuring that the frame is safe.

17 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 03/17/2013

Started car up and put it in reverse all the sudden these lights came on and the bakes now fill funny.

18 Service Brakes problem

I was driving at 55 mph, suddenly the car in front me stop at the fwy. I made panic stop but my abs wont activate. I just bump a car.

20 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 02/23/2012

I was driving the truck when I heard a noise in the tires like they were falling down I had encounter this when I had the truck new . But it is stop and 10 years later it is doing it again I believe the dealer should fix it because I read a lot of people have this problem it can cause a accident . So I'm concern and would like to get it fix thanks .

21 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 02/06/2012

During my work commute this morning the "vsc trac" and "vsc off" lights came on at the same time and stayed on.

22 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 12/27/2011

The vsc and trac lights started coming after a clucking sound heard from underneath the car followed by a loss of power. After turning the car off and back on again it goes away. But it comes back intermittently. The problem needs to be fixed. I am concerned about the safety of my family as we will need to go on a long family trip in a few weeks. Please help.

23 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 06/29/2011

Vehicle stability control (vsc), traction control (trac), and antilock brake system (abs) dash lights continuously illuminated indicating that all systems are off or malfunctioning. Can confirm that the trac, vsc, and abs are inactive all or most of the time. The abs intervenes at random under normal braking conditions without cause at low speed (less than 20mph) and makes braking difficult and inconsistent in conditions where abs is not normally needed. In that situation the brake pedal becomes hard to depress and braking force is inconsistently applied with little control given to the operator in turn extending the braking distance without due cause or warning. After much research online I have found numerous reports stating identical and/or similar observations and experiences. It is my opinion that the problem lies in the vsc control module, a known problematic component on this generation of Sequoia and more specifically model year 2003 vehicles. A recall for the vsc system was issued in April/may 2010 upgrading the control logic of the vsc system in certain model year 2003 vehicles. Let it be known that the vehicle in question had the recall work done in June of 2011 which did not remedy the issue as it has been either intermittent or constant since then.

24 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2010

2003 Toyota Sequoia vsc / abs skid control ecu failure. Went to Toyota dealer on Friday 10/01/2010 for a recall on my Toyota to update the vsc ecu. Dealer comes back and says my vsc ecu needs to be replaced for $900. 00 prior to updating the ecu. I declined the repairs and they had me sign a release stating Toyota is not responsible for any failed components due to my decision. I do not have any warning lights coming on indicating a problem with the vsc.

25 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2010

I have a 2003 Toyota Sequoia. Recently, the abs, vsc and vsc trak lights have come on the dash and stay on. These systems are safety-related in that they control the braking and vehicle control when in an emergency situation. In the event of slippery conditions, the failure of this system would make a bad situation worse, by not allowing the driver to maintain control of the vehicle.

26 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 03/13/2010

I own a 2003 Toyota Sequoia. About a month ago had to stop the car abruptly under rain to avoid a collision with a vehicle that failed to perform a stop at an intersection. The vehicle abs did not work and I skidded of the road without major consequences. . After a visit to the dealer they reported that vehicle has a problem with the traction control module, it is not working. Currently the vehicle has 66000 miles. The problem with the traction control module is that is disables the abs when the module stops working. I researched the internet and found multiple people complaining about this in vehicles under warranty and vehicles with relative low mileage. I believe this is also a problem for the Toyota tundra truck.

27 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 01/08/2010

Vsc, trac warning light on 2003 Toyota Sequoia (75k miles) - $1718 repair bill first incident - 3/11/04 (8. 5k miles), computer skid/computer assy repaired under warranty latest incident - 1/8/2010 (75k miles), brake booster ($763 repair) and charcoal canister ($550 repair). Referenced repairs may be recurring events supporting a potential recall program based on numerous website references. . .

28 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 11/20/2009

Abs, vsc/trac lights are "on" all came up at the same time. It was a rainy day in houston, TX. Had to run 55mph at 65mph speed limit due to rain for safety pre-caution. At the time I reached my work place (approx 10miles from my residence), all 3-lights (abs, vsc, trac) turned on. I am the 2nd owner of this vehicle, acquired it from Toyota dealer 15 October 2009. With this incident, got curious of any recalls, complaints or issues with 2003 Sequoia. Unfortunately, I just realized that I am among owners having the same issues.

29 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 11/15/2009

2003 Toyota Sequoia vehicle skid control system applies brakes while accelerating. Vehicle will come to a stop and loose power while accelerating.

30 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 11/09/2009

The skid control ecu on my 2003 Toyota Sequoia recently started intermittently reporting failure via parking warning light and disables the abs system. Recently we were driving at highway speeds and it disabled itself as we were braking. There was a TSB br006-06 put out by Toyota to replace the ecu in 2006 only if the customer reported the problem. It was a known logic problem with the ecu. We are lucky so far that we have been able to pull-over and turn off the vehicle and turn-it back on to clear the abs fault and continue driving without any accident. Toyota service is telling me the ecu needs replacement at my expense for a cost of over $1500. The vehicle was purchased because of the additional safety provided by the abs and vsc system, and Toyota should be ensuring that this safety system is working and should have had put a recall out on the computer back in 2006 for this problem for reference, the NHTSA has this recorded as incident #pe68072 and ea09006.

31 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2009

The vehicle , while starting and pulling out onto the road, would seem to try to take over and pulsate and apply the brakes. Very dangerous! I paid for computer analysis to be done, which verified the c1231 abs control system fault, but Toyota does not want to reimburse me for my prior expenses due to their defect. Frustrating!.

32 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 08/05/2009

The dash vsc trac & abs skid control warning lights on my 2003 Toyota Sequoia 2wd have been on constantly for a period of time. They first appeared when I started my engine before I even placed the vehicle in drive. This is my second such failure of this system. The first occurrence was just weeks after the factory warranty expired. The original estimate to repair was about $2100. After some complaining, the dealer split the cost with me. This should be recalled by the manufacturer or, by government intervention due to the severity of the defect and the potential for accidents and/or death resulting from the defective computer system causing the vehicle to lock up and lose power.

33 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2009

Ecu, abs, traction control , lights staying on all the time.

34 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 07/08/2009

My abs, vehicle skid control and trac control system has failed. Trouble codes indicate system failure and will require new abs, trac and anti skid ecu. I have not had the repair done yet. I am concerned about the safety without these features. I am aware that there are several people having this same issue.

35 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 06/13/2009

Abs skid control (ecu) and booster assembly malfunction. Dealer reports this as a safety concern that should not be happening and seems to be a pattern and concern yet Toyota refuses to address the issue.
