Yes I wrote awhile back about my ball joint snapping in half going 55. It was the lower one but it wasn't where the ball joint was it was the metal part about an inch and a half from where the ball joint was. Due to rust. The man whom I finally found who bought it new said he never received any kind of notice about the rust on the vehicle.
Ball joint separated and wheel tucked under car. Also broke cv shaft.

Tl the contact owns a 2003 Toyota Tacoma. While the vehicle was coasting into a fuel station, the front passenger side ball joint detached from the tire independently and without an impact. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence and later towed to Toyota of whittier (located at 14577 e, whittier blvd, whittier, CA 90605, (562) 222-5386). The dealer diagnosed that the ball joint became loose and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was repaired per NHTSA campaign number: 05v225000 (suspension) in 2005. The manufacturer provided case number: 1902250627. The contact stated that the recall repair failed. The approximate failure mileage was 230,000.

Takata recall, I am writing this complaint because I own a 2004 Toyota Tacoma . On November 2nd I was driving home , was at a 4way stop, once it was my turn to go I accelerated as usual and had my tire on the drivers side detach completely from the ball joint causing me to nearly wreck my truck, if I had been going faster I would have, this was one of the most scariest experiences I have ever had driving! it cost me nearly 1000. 00 dollars to fix and now I am having to have the other passenger side fixed because the mechanic says it's hammered. . . I noticed that over 150,000 Tacoma's were recalled due to this exact problem, when I entered my VIN it says I have no I repaired recalls on my vehicle! which obviously is not true, or my balk joints would be good to go, I have never taken my truck off road or even had it in 4 wheel drive, I have not beat on my truck I take excellent care of my vehicle, I feel this ball joint problem should of been part of your recall , I could of been severely hurt or even died as well as my son who was riding with me, thank god we werent. . . I am prepared to turn you into the bbb if I dont get a reasonable response.
While traveling at about 40 mph, right front passenger wheel suddenly and unexpectedly broke off at the ball joints. The tire folded under the chassis and the truck skidded to a stop in the road shoulder.
The contact owns a 2004 Toyota Tacoma. While the contact's son was driving 55 mph, the axle and ball joints detached from the vehicle. The contact's son lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a dirt ditch. The air bags did not deploy. There were no injuries and a police report was not filed. The vehicle was taken to valley hi Toyota (14612 valley center drive, victorville, CA 92395, 866-405-5098), but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was 178,468.
The contact owns a 2002 Toyota Tacoma. While driving approximately 10 mph, the ball joint fractured and came apart. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence and was later towed to mike erdman Toyota (1545 e merritt island causeway, merritt island, FL 32952) where it was diagnosed that the ball joint separated and damaged the axle. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. Additionally, the contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 05v225000 (suspension). The failure mileage was approximately 334,000. Parts distribution disconnect.
I've had complete failure of both sides- front ball joints. I chalked up the the drivers side failure to happenstance, but after passenger side recently had the same failure I did some investigating and realized this is a vehicle assembly issue. The same issue had recalls for the later models 2001-05 Tacomas, I believe. Not sure why the earlier models were excluded, but this is scary and dangerous to have a complete breakdown while in traffic. The tows and repairs cost over $500 in total for both instances. I'm not looking for reimbursement as much as reassurance that my truck is safe to drive. Both instances occurred on city streets. Passenger side was under 10 mph turning right towards my driveway. The recent incident was turning left at approximately 25 mph through an intersection with a traffic light. The truck tire crumbled on the passenger side and slide about 30 feet to a stop along the curb.

The contact owns a 2003 Toyota Tacoma. While driving 45 mph, the vehicle inadvertently turned left and crashed into an embankment. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the front suspension ball joint fractured and needed replacement. The vehicle was not repaired. A police report was filed. The contact sustained minor injuries that required medical attention. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The contact stated that she had not received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 05v225000 (suspension). The failure mileage was unknown.
I was driving on a highway at about 55 mph. The right lower control ball joint broke so the entire wheel broke off the vehicle. The vehicle tried to run/jump over the wheel and caused the vehicle to slammed down on the asphalt. The truck dragged on the asphalt for about 100 to 150 yds until I managed to control and stop it.
Ball joint separated causing driver to lose control of vehicle.

While I was driving the passenger side wheel completely buckled under the truck. Luckily, I was only driving 15 mph. Had this broken while I was on the interstate, I would have been injured or injured someone else. As a result, the mechanic found that both ball joints were bad so both were replaced. The frame is completely rusted out and the spare tire cannot be removed. No notice was ever given to us or the previous owner by Toyota, regarding the problems stated above.
The contact owns a 2001 Toyota Tacoma. While driving at various speeds, a squeaking sound emitted from the front of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed that the front driver side ball joint was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 140,000.
Going 35 miles an hour the vehicle will start to pull to the side and the ball joint will come out also the abs sensor cable will brake and you will have to replace it a $2500 dollar spence for a Toyota malfunction in the suspension I have a friend in California that has one a year early model than mine a 2003 Toyota Tacoma and he told me about this problem had happen to him in the freeway about 60 mph to him a had to learn the hard way if you have a Toyota Tacoma please I am warning you to have the ball joint replace before its to late the new ball joints are warranty for life but I will check in to that if I still have the pick up in four years.
Truck fell on the ground wheel went out frame slide across pavement and super scary . Ball joint broke sealed ball joints ,broke …. Dried out and fell apart could have killed my family.
Tl- the contact owns a 2003 Toyota Tacoma. The contact stated that they were turning in a parking lot and the front driver side wheel went to the ground. The contact stated that the ball joint spit. The contact found NHTSA recall campaign id number: 05v225000 (suspension) ball joint and was told by the manufacturer that the vehicle was not included. The failure mileage and current mileages was 180,000. Rl.
I had made a left turn onto freeway entrance ramp, started accelerating to get up to speed. At approximately 30mph there was a loud bang/pop noise and the vehicle front left dropped down. I hung on to try and keep vehicle under control as it took an sharp left hand turn towards a pole. Even though the brake pedal went to the floor I was able to some how get the vehicle stopped before the passenger side hit the pole where my 1 year old daughter was riding. I had the truck checked for recalls in late 2008 when I purchased it. The report said ball joint recall was VIN # specific and that this truck was not in the VIN range. After the incident happened, I called Toyota hotline for assistance and even though this is the same condition, and part that is failing on the vehicles in range they said, "that sense the recall is VIN specific, there's nothing we can do, and we can't just add a vehicle to the recall". So, now I'm stuck with a wrecked vehicle, but very thankful that I didn't hit the pole where my daughter was sitting. This needs to be addressed and all Tacoma's that contain this style ball joint be fixed before some one does get killed.
Driving down a busy boulevard, my wheel fell off and my vehicle slammed on the ground. I am lucky to not have killed anyone, and am still afraid to drive my vehicle. Faulty ball joints + rusted frames make this vehicle potentially very dangerous. Toyota initiated a program to buy Tacomas back directly from consumers, but I was not notified of the program. Now I am stuck with a potentially incredibly dangerous truck.

Purchased used vehicle from private seller. On the first day of use, after obtaining new title, tags, insurance coverage, the check engine light came on. The following day scheduled service w/ the local Toyota dealer. Upon inspection was told that the truck needed a catalytic converter and there was a recall for the lower front ball joints that the dealer will replace for free. The dealer had to order the parts. After receiving the parts and upon start of the repairs, I received a phone informing me that the frame was rusted and the vehicle is deemed unsafe to drive. I was given an 800 phone number to call and deal directly with Toyota corporate office. I am patiently awaiting for a response.
The contact owns a 2004 Toyota Tacoma. The contact was driving 15 mph in a residential driveway when the ball joint fractured in half and the front passenger wheel completely fractured from the vehicle. The vehicle was towed then to a local repair facility where it was diagnosed that the ball joint was defective and would need replacing. The manufacturer was contacted but offered no assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 110,000.
On January 19, 2011 at approximately 7:15 am, I was driving approximately 15 mph on a dirt road, came around an approximate 90 degree right hand turn heading down hill, slid on mud or ice and hit a rut. After all wheels had passed through the rut the vehicle drove up and over a small rise (bump) in the road. After coming over the rise, the right front of the vehicle dove into the dirt and the truck came to an abrupt stop. I turned off the truck and got out of the vehicle to inspect the front end. The right front ball joint had completely separated from . . . ??? . . . What ever it is supposed to be attached to. The right front wheel was perpendicular to the wheel well with the inside leaning toward the front of the vehicle. I have several photographs of the vehicle taken moments after the equipment failure. I'm glad this happened where it did because only a few miles further into my trip to work, I would have been traveling 75 mph on the interstate. Amen! I had never received any notification from Toyota concerning recall no. 50j. I only accidentally came across the information while surfing the web within the past week.
The ball joints and suspension on my 2002 toy Tacoma fell apart while making a routine turn onto my street! the balljoints separated and the front axle dug into the street, the only thing holding the wheel to the vehicle was the brake line! had this happened 5 minutes earlier it would have been on the freeway doing 65 mph instead of in a residential tract doing 20 mph!.
1. Driving normally, my 1997 Toyota Tacoma's front passenger tire fell off at an intersection. The ball joint failed. It was towed to a service place today. Had I been driving at highway speed, myself and passengers could have been killed or seriously injured. 2. Has not happened before. The vehicle is well maintained. 3. Waiting on repair parts and estimate.

In the past 23 months the ball joints have failed, causing wheels to fall off, on both sides of my 2000 Toyota Tacoma. The first was the passenger side which in September 2006. At that time the vehicle was moving at very low speed causing minimal damage but requiring over $900 in repairs. Second was the driver side in August 2008. This time the vehicle was moving downhill at under 40 mph on gravel road when the wheel fell off [taking axel, break line and cv joint with it]. The Tacoma slid out of control for more than 100' before coming to rest. Towing and repairs to get the truck back on the road came to $1,053. There is some additional damage in the wheel well and the door is not fitting properly but that has not been examined by a repairman as of yet.

The contact owns 2002 Toyota Tacoma. While driving 5 mph, the passenger right front tire ball joint broke in half. The vehicle was towed to the dealer. The dealer stated that his vehicle identification number wasnt included in recall 05v225000. A report was filed with the manufacturer and they advised him that he would receive a call back. The current and failure mileages were 100,000.
2003 Toyota Tacoma would not steer safely. Upon inspection mechanic determined the vehicle needed new tires due to the vehicle being out of alignment. Consumer was not notified of a recall regarding the brakes. The Toyota dealer refused to replace the right and left ball joint useless the consumer paid for the repairs.
I was driving on the road in my 2004 Toyota Tacoma when I saw my tire go rolling ahead of my vehicle, the truck leaned over to the left, skidded sideways and then stopped in the middle of the road. I got out of the truck and my tire was in the ditch and my chassis was on the ground on the left side. I called a tow truck and they said it looked like my ball joints just separated. I had the vehicle towed to my mechanic and he said the ball joints looked like they gave way and this allowed the wheel to fall off. I have mechanical breakdown through my insurance company gieico and they told me I would have to get a letter from Toyota stating if it wasn't under warranty from our local dealership in tallahassee, florida legacy and spoke with a service member (robb) he told my that there wasn't a recall on 2004 Toyota Tacomas and I would have to pay to have it towed in to check and see if it was still under warranty. This occurred on 12/13/05 and as of 12/15/2005 there still wasn't a determination whether or not it is under warranty. My concern is after reading about a recall on the internet stating that the ball joint may separate from the knuckle, that my vehicle should be a part of the recall and the wheel falling off could be a result from a defect. The dealership isn't accept responsibility for the recall or even looking at the vehicle in this regards. If they don't warranty the ball joints, then my mechanic will fix the problem, but I will keep all of the old parts in case they need to be examined.
Nut on left front ball joint became detached while vehicle was in motion, causing left front axle assembly to strike & drag on road surface.
