4 Rear Suspension Shock Absorber problem of the 1998 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 12/31/2016

Purchased 1998 Toyota Tacoma 4wd truck October 2012. Vehicle had been recalled for frame rust and was serviced by a Toyota dealership 05/25/2011 and frame and under carriage was inspected, cleaned, prepared and coated with undercoating. Dealership advised the problem was corrected. Mileage at time was 161,757. In late 2012 rust spots developed again and continued to worsen until the frame completely rusted through and broke above the right rear wheel in the vicinity of the shock absorb-er bracket which also was rusted through. There are various other rust problem areas on the frame and suspension parts and another frame rust through is evident on the left side of the vehicle above the rear tire at the shock absorb-err bracket. . December 2016, mileage 211,927 the vehicle was considered to be unsafe for operation and taken off the public roadways by the current owner after the frame broke into while turning into the driveway. The vehicle was placed out of service due to fear of being held liable for death, injury or dismemberment to self, person or persons due to knowingly continued operation of the vehicle would be unsafe. After extensive research of frame rust through problems, the Toyota dealership that handled the recall in 2011 was contacted in person by the current owner on February 21, 2017 at 1:30 pm and was advised by the dealership service department that the enhanced warranty was only good for 15 years from the date the vehicle was first purchased new and placed in service which was April 1998 and had expired in April 2013. As the current owner of the vehicle I was never notified by Toyota that a warranty had ever existed and would soon expire and nor myself or the previous owner was ever notified to have the vehicle reinspected by Toyota to make sure the problem had not reoccurred and vehicle was safe for continued operation.

5 Rear Suspension Shock Absorber problem of the 1999 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 12/13/2015

Dec 13, 2015, while bending down to pick up my reading glasses in the driveway, I noticed a clean through fracture of the frame, rear passenger side, just in front of the shock absorber fitting. A few days earlier I had wondered why the bed was tilted up pinching the back of the cab. The vehicle had passed state inspection year after year and had been see by my regular mechanic less than 2 years ago and no issues with frame deterioration were found or brought to my attention. I contacted Toyota and just yesterday was told, sorry about your "rust" issue, but the warranty has long expired. This is a well documented design and manufacturing defect tied to improper prep by Toyota frame contractor dana holding corp. The vehicle was fully operational and now it is un-driveable. If the vehicle had come apart at highway speeds, it could have caused serious injury or fatality. This is my only means of transportation as a fixed income retiree. There's no justifiable reason a vehicle frame should fail like this only to have Toyota tell me they will do nothing. My troubles aside, this is a very serious public safety risk and a risk to all service personnel, owners, their passengers and others on the road in their vicinity. It was only by sheer luck that I discovered this while the vehicle was parked.

6 Rear Suspension Shock Absorber problem of the 2000 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 07/06/2015

While having a tire repaired, mechanic noticed a broken shock absorber mount. Upon his attempt to repair, he found severe frame rust, with insufficient metal remaining to reattach the mount. After an appointment with the local Toyota dealer, I was informed that the frame was unrepairable, and that since the "put in service" date was Feb 2000, I was too late for the extended warranty program. Apparently, if I had found the problem 5 months earlier, I would have been eligible for a buy-back. As this is a serious safety issue, I can not understand the manufacturer's time limitations. I am the second owner, and other than the frame rust, the truck shows no corrosion. I have never received any notice of frame rust problems, or the inspection and extended frame warranty offer from Toyota. Since getting the bad news, I have found numerous similar stories online. This was an admitted manufacturing defect, and definitely is a safety issue, as the frame can collapse or suspension components can break loose. There are thousnds of these vehicles in daily use, and the manufacturer should be responsible for the repair, replacement, or buy-back. Please help!!!.

Wheel and transmission were out of alingment. Risk of traveling at highway speeds was motor meltdown and/or loss of control of vehicle. 3) parts were replaced.

11 Rear Suspension Shock Absorber problem of the 2004 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 01/30/2008

Purchased 2004 Tacoma for $18,000, from right Toyota in scottsdale, az in June 2006, received bill for $25,000+!! so much for agreeing on a price! I also purchased an extended warranty for $2200 (included in the $25,000). Weeks after getting the truck I noticed the rear passenger side seemed to give when turning corners. I assumed I needed to adjust to driving a truck with hard suspension. Unfortunately it persisted so I took it into camelback Toyota and had them check it out. They assured me that everything was in tip top shape, I got the feeling they never really checked anything out. They just assumed that it would be unusual to see this stuff breakdown, a valid thought, but they were of no help. Here it is now, a year and a half later, and its just getting worse! so I took it into earnhardt Toyota and the first 2 visits they performed needed front end alignments and tire balancing. They looked at it recently after me yelling at them, and told me that my entire suspension system needs to be replaced. Apparently my leaf springs are bad ($1700 purchase and install), and front struts ($650), and rear shocks ($450) as well! so $2800 to repair a truck that I purchased directly from Toyota not 1. 5 years ago, and even purchased a warranty. They assured me that everything was covered under the warranty. They lied. Now I owe $18000 on a $14000 truck! steer clear of right Toyota, they totally scammed me.
