36 Body problem of the 2023 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 04/19/2025

Driver's door unlatched during the winter (January 2025) while stopping at an intersection. The incident repeated yesterday April 19, 2025, while driving on the freeway and turning right. The door partially opened and a warning light appeared on the dashboard. Reduced speed / stopped, to be able to completely open the door and close again. The vehicle has approximately 25,200 miles. Vehicle is being taken to a Toyota dealer to have the door latch inspected and to try to reproduce the failure mode. No explanation needed on why a door unlatching on its own, while cruising on a freeway, is a safety risk to the driver and others.

Failure Date: 04/18/2025

Purchased my 2 Tacoma in 11/24 second party learned of leaf spring tested and failed sent me home in rent a car demanding it back 2 min upon my arrival home due to the frame was damaged. Said they put it up on lift but didn't it was too dangerous. Had to he my vehicle out of their shop Saturday morning without the fix. Driving it off the lot from Toyota pittsfield massachusetts. Called another Toyota she sees in 16 it was inspected with recall but never fixed. I know if a pervious owner was aware who wouldn't get a fix for free? it came from an auction, a. Dealership according to history. With no reports of it ever being fixed. I believe from much research this is the second recall for leaf springs. It was never explained to be except via text that it was terrible w insulation shoved in parts. Who had done it I'm not sure. Ct. Toyota is amazed by the treatment I endured from pitts Toyota. Noone spoke to me. Of alternatives, danger, cost to fix but just let me drive away unsafe. I'm appalled that Toyota gets away with this when so many people are at risk. New tires oil change and this test noone saw?? until it was being cared for but refused. No. It should be fixed all of this issue. The truck as many is in great shape engine everything for this is why I purchased it also knowing thinking how great totota is/was would be fixed being a federal recall. There are 10s of thousands of consumers still with this issue that most were unaware of. I was never personally told except a message.

40 Body problem of the 2022 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 03/12/2025

I have a 2022 white Toyota Tacoma trd4x4. The paint is chipping in the inside fender on the left side. I did some research and looks like there was a recall for this very issue and that Toyota was reimbursing for the repairs. I called Toyota today and they said that I’m VIN doesn’t fall in that recall. A vehicle that is less that 3 years old new shouldn’t have the paint chipping. I don’t drive the vehicle much and don’t use it in extreme conditions. They refused to help and stated I’m out of warranty. The recall was for the same issue I am having on all white Tacomas on the inner fender and window areas. They didn’t want to help because my white is not the same code. But thought it was funny because it’s the same issue, same color and defective in the same place. On top of that, paint shouldn’t chip in 3 years from new to now when the vehicle has been garage kept and has only 20k miles. I would really appreciate you guys opening an investigation on this please. Thank you!.

41 Body problem of the 2015 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 02/28/2025

Paint starting to peel on exterior of both passenger and rear passenger side doors above window frame. Apparently Toyota is aware of the problem in models with the super white paint color and has issued a recall for their vehicles with certain VIN's. My VIN is not included in the recall although the paint peeling is identical to other vehicles that are included in the recall. Thank you.

Failure Date: 02/12/2025

I had 8022 miles on my Tacoma , Toyota employee of almost a decade , drove like normal no adds , one morning drove to a conference and was on the road no more than 20 min and then I see the bed of my truck on fire , im on the interstate so I pull over quickly and call 911 and then it just burnt up and gone. Now a year later and Toyota refuses to assist with anything saying they cant find out despite the insurance companies ruling me out and fowl play out. I feel strongly Toyota has an obligation to make this right.

43 Body problem of the 2006 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 01/16/2025

The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Tacoma. The contact stated that the vehicle failed the state inspection because there was a hole approximately 3-inches wide on the driver's side of the vehicle near the catalytic convertor. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who confirmed that the hole was caused by extensive rust and needed to be repaired. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that there was a recall issued twice; however, the recall had expired. The manufacturer referred the contact to the NHTSA hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 130,000.

The truck has been parked since . Ive had no transportation and can not run right out and buy another truck . I am also not willing to give up the truck either . 45 Body problem of the 2004 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 12/13/2024

The vehicle has an open recall (NHTSA recall #12v542) for the spare tire carrier lift plate. I brought the vehicle to a Toyota dealership to have the recall addressed, but the dealership refused to perform the repair, stating that the frame is too rusted to proceed safely. They recommended a full frame replacement due to severe rust damage, which includes holes and significant structural weakening. Toyota has refused to provide a replacement frame under any existing recall or warranty program. This means the recall cannot be completed, and the vehicle remains unsafe to drive. Additionally, I cannot locate a replacement frame for this vehicle through Toyota or the aftermarket, leaving no practical solution to address the safety risks. The refusal to honor the recall and the lack of available replacement parts put me and others at significant risk. The problem has been confirmed by the Toyota dealership during inspection, and the rust damage makes the vehicle structurally unsound. The unresolved recall, combined with the excessive frame rust, has created a double safety hazard that needs urgent resolution.

46 Body problem of the 2010 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 12/05/2024

Recently had routine service done on my 2010 Toyota Tacoma. Mechanic noted a lot of corrosion of the frame, including where leaf springs and axles are connected. He said that he had difficulty putting the vehicle on the lift for service due to the amount of corrosion and that he could not assure me that the vehicle is safe to drive.

47 Body problem of the 2010 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 11/04/2024

The chassis/ frame work of the pickup is rusted, corroded/ rotted. This is a known issue in there was a settlement on a lawsuit related to the problem for this year model and make vehicle and Toyota was responsible to fix the problem at no cost to the customer. I called the Toyota dealership and is being told that there is no outstanding recall for this issue for this VIN#. The fact remains that the vehicle has this safety issue and I’m asking for the repairs to be done at no cost to me. Thanks for your attention to this matter.

48 Body problem of the 2008 Toyota Tacoma

49 Body problem of the 2009 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 10/22/2024

I just learned from my mechanic that the frame corrosion is bad. The frame was inspected by vanderstyne (now west herr) Toyota on 06/20/2020. It passed the inspection at that time, so they did not do anything. But within 4. 5 years and only a little more than 6,000 miles driving since then - this corrosion shows up. I think the Toyota specs for the corrosion inspection were not sufficient. Toyota should be held accountable for their negligence. I only have 72,900 miles on this Tacoma. I would have liked to keep it for another 5 years or so, but now I cannot and Toyota washed their hand when I contacted them.

53 Body problem of the 2017 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 10/01/2024

Noticed that my floor is getting soaked for no reason. After bring my truck to arlington Toyota I found out that is was the cabin pressure vent that was leaking. The cabin pressure vent is found between the truck bed and cab. They recalled the third break light in 2019 for leaking water into the cabin but Toyota won’t recognize this pressure vent as a recall which is also leaking water into the cabin. After pulling up all of the carpet I have black mold all under the carpet where my newborn baby was riding. Black mold is a huge health concern. Looking online this is a known issue with Toyota Tacomas. My parts to fix this issue have been back ordered for two mths so far, still with no eta on when they will be available. According to the service rep, I am one of nine people currently dealing with this same issue at arlington Toyotas dealership alone. So no time frames have been provided. When I was quoted the 5800 to fix this issue they suggested I go through insurance. This seems to be a known issue with product quality and instead of recalling they are pushing it to insurance companies. Seems to be a shady practice Toyota is pulling and no one is big enough to stop them.

55 Body problem of the 2001 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 09/27/2024

We purchased a 2001 Toyota Tacoma prerunner from a used car lot in omaha ne. We have had it for 3 months and recently had a mechanic look over the vehicle for repairs. The mechanic indicated the frame is rusted through and the truck is unsafe to drive. The mechanic indicated that there was a recall on the frames possibly, so we followed up with Toyota. Toyota told me that there is no frame recall, but instead they did a "customer support program" in relation to the frame, but it had expired. Toyota told us there is nothing they can do for us. My concern is that Toyota has a known issue, a safety issue, concerning their vehicles but will not rectify it. I would like Toyota to be held liable for their substandard product, no matter how long it has been. A quick google search about Toyota and recalls is that they are not good at reporting them to you, or their service centers are not good at making sure all recalls are taken care of, and I feel that this is something that needs to be investigated - and in my case, rectified.

56 Body problem of the 2015 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 09/23/2024

The vehicle's super white factory applied paint (040) is peeling around the exterior window frame. Took it to local dealership and was advised to speak with Toyota customer service who advised that my year had not been included in the srp 23te08 with the same issues for years 2016-2022. They asked me to file complaint here so hoping that it can be added to get the repairs approved.

59 Body problem of the 2007 Toyota Tacoma

60 Body problem of the 2013 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 08/03/2024

While backing in camper to my driveway after a 3. 5 hr return trip, the back part of the frame which holds the rear bumper and the trailer hitch let go from a rusted frame. See attached pic. I inquired with a Toyota dealer who said my vehicle is out of warranty for the csp from Toyota for rusting frames. They indicated there was a recall that wasn't repaired on my vehicle but I don't recall seeing a recall for rusting frames. They also said this wasn't a safety recall which I have a hard time understanding. If this happened while on the highway and not in front of my house the entire camper would have completely let go from my vehicle. Any information would be appreciated.

61 Body problem of the 2016 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 07/28/2024

At approx 75k miles hood latch popped open. Noticed hood was open while driving on highway. Only the 2nd safety latch was holding it closed. Pulled over to close it but it would not fully latch. Noticed latch had a lot of rust. Did not bother taking it to a dealer or repair shop. Bought an aftermarket latch and easily installed myself which solved the issue. Very glad hood did not fully fly open which could have been catastrophic.

Toyota addressed this issue with the frame paint peeling off long ago but they have not launched a customer support program to solve the problem yet. When we reached their brand engagement center line (1-888-270-9371) and they do not provide a hard or estimated date to launch the repair program. The vehicle was already inspected by round rock TX Toyota service (pdf page) certifying the issue is a manufacturer responsibility. Please take care of this situation promptly.

65 Body problem of the 2005 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 05/30/2024

The frame has failed and is well beyond unsafe for the road due to the amount of rust and decay. The vehicle was part of the 'corrosion resistance compound application to vehicle frame' recall. I will bring the vehicle for inspection ASAP, if requested. There is absolutely nothing safe when a vehicle has a faulty structural issue. When I purchased the vehicle there were step rails and spray painted portions of the frame, the parts you could see. Also, when looking up the vehicle, I didn't see any recall issues at that time and thought it was a good sign. After driving it for 6th months, I started feeling a slight resistance feel when accelerating and turning at the same time. I took it to a mechanic and they delivered the news that the frame was deemed unfit for the roads. I found out that the vehicle was brought in for the recall when it came out and at that time the frame was labeled 'not exchangeable' and a slight bandage was applied to the unsafe defective body component that was sold as 'safe. ' I filed a claim with a local dealership and they told me that it was still safe for roads. Right now, the frame clips and portions of the frame are visibly rusting off, visible from solely walking up to the truck. Reaching out to Toyota I am very much hoping that the care for their loyal customers equally matches the product that they produce, superior to the competition. I have owned a Toyota for 10 years and never considered purchasing anything else for life, however, coming to a fair solution on this issue will have a tremendous effect on that statement I know to be true, right now. This truck is in outstanding condition with very little rust to the actually black body of the vehicle and had only 165,000 miles on it. Please don't allow this vehicle to be absent for the roads due to an issue that was already agreed that it needed correcting. Please allow myself to continue to feel that Toyota makes an outstanding product because they care about the customer.

68 Body problem of the 2007 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 05/08/2024

These vehicles have frame rot. It was addressed in cold weather states with a recall but the recall was not available in California. My vehicle was a California only truck. The corrosion if undressed will result in the frame breaking in half behind the rear left passenger seat. Toyota should have included all states in this recall and there are an abundance of Toyotas manufactured from 2005 to 2010 on the road with this issue that are ticking time bombs. My vehicle only has 145k miles on it.

69 Body problem of the 2017 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 05/01/2024

Paint is peeling around doors on both sides of the vehicle. Both front and rear doors of the cab. Common known issue.

70 Body problem of the 2009 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 05/01/2024

Vehicle: 2009 Toyota Tacoma VIN: [xxx] mileage: 128,400 owner: jacob grove, anderson, SC summary of issue: the frame of this 2009 Toyota Tacoma has developed severe rust perforation that makes the vehicle unsafe to drive. My independent mechanic has refused to work on it due to safety concerns, and Toyota of greenville (SC) has confirmed that the frame is extensively corroded and requires replacement. Background: Toyota previously issued a customer support program (csp) for frame corrosion affecting 2005–2009 Tacomas in northern states, including ohio, where this truck was purchased and operated. In June 2018, the vehicle was inspected at don wood Toyota in athens, OH (91,600 miles). The dealership recorded “no perforation” and did not apply the protective coating or replace the frame. The truck has been minimally driven since (an average of 6,000 miles per year). In may 2024, at 128,400 miles, a mechanic and dealership confirmed the frame has multiple areas of severe perforation, including around brake lines and exhaust mounts. Concern: it is unreasonable that a vehicle frame could go from “no perforation” to “severe perforation” in only 36,000 miles and six years of light use. This indicates either: the 2018 inspection under Toyota’s csp was inadequate, or the frame was already compromised but not properly addressed at the time. Safety risk: the vehicle cannot be safely lifted, worked on, or driven in its current condition. The rapid deterioration presents a risk of frame failure while driving, endangering occupants and others on the road. Request: I am submitting this complaint so that NHTSA is aware of ongoing frame corrosion failures in 2005–2009 Toyota Tacomas, even in cases where Toyota previously inspected and declined to repair during the csp period. This case demonstrates that the problem may not have been properly identified or corrected during program inspections, leaving unsafe vehicles on the road. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
