Driving highway speed. My truck had 5-6 gallons in the tank. Suddenly the lights on dash went off and loss of power. Truck would only drive 25mph. I had to pullover and thought I was gonna get crushed by the 18 wheeler behind me. Very dangerous situation. Now I do not let the tank get below 1/2 empty. Very annoying for a $55,000 truck.

Gas tank, tank sheid bracket holding tank up almost completly rusted off with hardly holding gas tank on! major issue!.
My pickup was just reframed under Toyota recall at Toyota of bedford, ohio. But,, they omitted the safety shield under the fuel tank. . Aka . . Gravel shield. . First saying it never had one, then it was missing, then it didnt come in the kit, I filed a case with toyato USA, corpration # 1701033889 as per all safey items were to be mantained or replaced !! but I was denied by Toyota corp. So I will have to pick up my truck under protest as Toyota of bedford is threating me with calling the loaner car in as stolen if I dont today ! said shield was "rusty" but most was on the truck when it went in there, and im on social security (small check) which our great obama care takes almost five eights of & I really cant afford the $ 640. - they are asking just for the part ! I really dont feel safe in the truck without the shield , so it will probley sit till better weather & I can make a shield for it. . And it will be stronger & last much longer than the piece of "rusty tin, " that they say fell away. So again , im picking it up under protest & will write that on the billing statement today 1/52017. . . Steve baab . . Stevebaab61@gmail. Com. . 330-467-5698. . . 8577 olde8rd. The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Tacoma. The contact noticed that the fuel tank was leaking. Once the fuel tank was removed, the contact noticed that the subframe was rusted. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the frame needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 137,000. The VIN was not provided.
Over a week my vehicle began to start intermittently, then it finally stopped starting. I had it towed to the dealership and they told me the wire harness connection at the top of the fuel pump had burned up pins, and they needed to repair the wire harness and replace the connector. To have burned pins in a wire harness means arcing of some sort on top of my fuel tank. My children sit right above that pump in the back of the cab. Fuel vapor and electrical arcing of any kind does not mix.

I just found my truck is subject to recall number: e12. The safety risk: states possible punchered fuel tank and possible fuel leak could result in fire. The recall status: states "remedy not yet available". This is unacceptable in my mind. Replacing a leaf spring assembly is not that complicated. I hope NHTSA will encourage Toyota to react quickly to this design failure. Dave weaver.

My fuel tank is rusted completely through to the point of leaking gas. I know toyta has recalled the frame (replaced) and the spare tire holder (not yet replaced) due to rust. Seems like the whole underside is rusting out.

Cover for gas tank totally rotted out and tank is exposed. This vehicle has recall 9355 - emergency spare tire. Not sure why this isn't also covered. Looks unsafe to me.

I brought my truck to a Toyota dealer to locate an emissions system leak. Two other mechanics had spent hours trying to diagnose the problem and were unable to find the leak. The Toyota tech found the leak in less than 20 minutes. That would lead me to believe he had dealt with this problem before. The leak turned out to be corrosion in the fuel tank, where the filler neck meets the tank. I would not expect a rusted gas tank in an 8 year old truck. The repair estimate was over $1400, the part alone was $750. This is a truck that had already been recalled for a rusted frame (which Toyota replaced at no cost to me) and is showing corrosion in the rear bumper and tailgate. I suspect Toyota saved money by building the truck with inferior materials. But more importantly, a leaking fuel tank is a huge safety issue, not common in a vehicle this recent.
Gas tank shield corroding when notified by Toyota about corrosion problems to the frame of the truck, I inspected the under neath of the truck myself and also noticed the gas tank shield had corroded away. When I went to the dealer to have the frame checked, I told them about the problem with the gas tank shield and they told me that was not part of the recall. Now a year later, I just received another recall for a different problem," excessive corrosion of the spare tire carrier plate". If the frames and spare tire carrier plates corrode due to high road salt use in cold climate states, why are the gas tank shields corroding ? this is a very dangerous safety issue, that needs to be addressed.
Was traveling on the interstate at approximately 75 mph and ran over a small piece of shredded tracker trailer tire, approximately 8-10 inches long, by 3-6 inches wide. The tire piece flew up, impacted the front facing section of my fuel tank, puncturing the top part of the fuel tank. The gash was about 1 inch, and fuel began to gush out from the front of the tank covering the top, sides, and bottom of the tank due to the wind from highway speeds. The fuel leak was not detected until I had driven 200 miles more and noticed my fuel economy dropping rapidly. When I stopped, fuel was leaking heavily onto the ground. Note this is a 2wd prerunner double cab long bed. The fuel tank has no protective steel shielding on the front of the tank to prevent road debris from damaging the tank in the event of impact.
