Spare Tire Problems of Toyota Tacoma

The contact owns a 2003 Toyota Tacoma. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 12v542000 (tires) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The contact stated that while having a routine check up at lithia Toyota of redding (250 e. Cypress Ave, redding, CA 96002, (530) 250-3207) the technician informed him that the spare tire had severe corrosion, as well as the rear subframe. The vehicle was not repaired due to part not being available. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the recall had expired. The failure mileage was approximately 450,000. Parts distribution disconnect.

The contact owns a 2001 Toyota Tacoma. While reversing at a low speed, the contact noticed that the spare tire separated from underneath the vehicle. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The VIN was included in NHTSA campaign number: 12v542000 (wheels). The vehicle was taken to a dealer. Summer 2012 the cross member holding the spare tire fell off while I was driving. Now (January 2014) a large (three inch) perforation has appeared in the front frame. The truck frame is rotting out fast.

Sometime in 2012, my spare tire and rim were lost on the highway due to a failed spare tire carrier. The lift plate on the spare tire carrier, failed due to corrosion and released the spare tire (and rim) on the highway. No crash of incident occurred because no one was following the vehicle at the time.

After getting off the highway, as I was pulling away at the end of the exit ramp I noticed the spare tire had fallen from the truck and was in the middle of the road. I was able to quickly back up and load the spare onto the back of the truck. I noticed part of the carrier was rusted to the spare, but the middle of the carrier had rusted through. I had participated in Toyota's frame recall a little over a year ago and believe they should have seen how bad the situation was at that time, and done something to rectify the problem. I had just spent a half-hour driving home on the highway. I can't imagine the damage that could have been caused had the tire dropped at highway speeds during rush hour rather than at 10 mph!! in searching the internet, this is an all too common occurrence for older Tacomas. I don't understand why this isn't considered a safety issue and subject to recall.

Spare tire cable snapped on the morning of 7/12/12. Snapping of the cable resulted in the rear of the vehicle becoming airborne and shifting to the side while in mid air. Luckily time was on my side. I was working nights and had this incident unfolded while working my normal day shift, I am positive there would have been contact between my vehicle with another vehicle, or another vehicle with tire and rim on route 287 north in new jersey as the roads are packed like sardines in a can yet moving at a brisk pace. I did not know what is was at first but immediately pulled off into the shoulder. Found the wheel and noticed that the unused spare tire is now in need of replacement at a cost of $180.

Loss of spare tire assembly due to rust Toyota will not replace wheel assembly will replace the rusted tire holder but not the tire Toyota replaced the frame on a recall and did not replace the rusted spare tire holder this is negligence on the part of Toyota someone may have been killed when the spare tire came loose on the highway at 55 mph.

The contact owns a 2011 Toyota Tacoma equipped with dunlop grand trek tires, size p265/65/r17, dot c8er2610. While the vehicle was parked the contact noticed the tire tread had split on the outer edge of the tire. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technicians stated the tire needed to be replaced. The tire was replaced with the spare tire and a replacement tire was ordered. Wednesday April 14,2010 at approximately 8:30 am while I was getting onto a highway (101 e/b in bedford nh) my spare tire broke off from the underbed carrier. There was a motorcyclist right behind me that had to make a evasive action to avoid being hit by my spare tire. The plate had rusted out.

2003 Toyota Tacoma. Consumer writes in regards to vehicle frame rust recall notice issues. The consumer stated the mechanic discovered the frame on the front driver's side near the spring hanger was rusted. In September 2009, the vehicle was inspected and no rust was found. In January 2009, the spare tire carrier was replaced.

The contact owns a 2005 Toyota Tacoma. The vehicle has el dorado sport fury SUV tires, size p225/75r15. While driving 10 mph, the rear passenger side tire blew out. The dealer replaced the tire with a regular sized spare tire. The tire failure mileage was 1,500. The vehicle current and failure mileages were 37,000. Updated 5/18/09 the consumer stated when she slowed down to make a right hand turn, the tire hit the curb and blew out. Updated 05/19/09.

This is in response to the new Toyota recall on the sienna Mini-vans spare tire. I own a 2002 Toyota Tacoma, in which the frame was recently replaced due to rust perforation in certain states. I am the original owner and back in 8/2007 I had a flat tire and had to change it. The spare tire resides under the vehicle and is secured by a cable. When I went to access the spare, I noticed the whole cable and the surrounding pieces were severely rusted and was very difficult to separate the tire from the cable. After hearing about the recall on the sienna for the spare tire getting rusty, and possibly falling loose while driving, I realized that my Tacoma, and possibly other vehicles that use this method, and are exposed to extreme climate conditions, could trigger a similar event.

The contact owns a 2003 Toyota Tacoma. The contact stated that the vehicle was equipped with goodyear dunlop tires, size 215/70/15. The contact stated while driving approximately 35 mph the tire pressure warning indicator illuminated and a loud noise emitted outside of the vehicle. The vehicle was maneuvered to the side of the road. The contact noticed that the rear passenger's side tire exploded. The spare tire was mounted temporarily. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the spare tire was replaced with a new tire. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 2,400. The VIN and dot numbers were unavailable.

While driving 55 mph, the left front tire exploded. The consumer was able to pull over to the shoulder and called road side assistance to change the tire. Three days later the left rear tire blew out, the consumer was told that the spare tire was in the process of about to fail as well. The next day, Toyota had the vehicle towed and all 5 tires were replaced.

One of the tires blew up on me without any warnig all over suddenly my truck was fish tailing in the middle of the highway. I was very close to cause a collective accident. I contacted the manufacturer and they reffered me to their local dealer to look at the tires but their answer was that the damage was caused by a road hazard. The problem is that the tires blew up in pieces in a matter of seconds. I installed the spare tire but the day after I notice that the tire wall has a big lump. ( look like a weaker section on the side ready to explode) dt.

2005 Toyota Tacoma with indentations on the spare tire. Customer states that the spare tire is touching the chassis which is causing the indentations. Customer also stated that the other spare tire exploded and the new one is eroding.

Consumer was not able to access the spare tire without having to remove the bumper.
