1 Steering Is Loose problem of the 2008 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 05/23/2017

The contact owns a 2008 Toyota Tacoma. While driving 45 mph, the steering felt loose. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the steering linkage fractured and needed to be replaced. The contact stated that the manufacturer failed to install a protective booth over the steering linkage, which caused dirt and dust to enter the steering assembly. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 68,000.

2 Steering Is Loose problem of the 2004 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 03/29/2017

We are the second owners of a 2004 Tacoma, purchased 4 years ago. It currently has 104,000 miles on it. The underside is rusted out! we just got the list of things to fix this morning (rusty muffler and steering components needing replacement) and are devastated. My husband was told he could lose control of steering at any moment if we don't make the repairs of $4000+. The steering is very loose and not steady. I opened a case this morning, but fear because it's a 2004, they won't hold themselves accountable. Why would they design a truck that looks great on the outside, but becomes a rust bucket on the inside? aren't they worried about the safety of their Toyota drivers and others?.

3 Steering Is Loose problem of the 2010 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 05/01/2016

Steering is very loose on off road driving / or "washboard" type road- there is currently a Toyota TSB (technical service bulletin) #0119-10 out right now with a solution to the problem. Solution= replace intermediate shaft. After reading all the posts online, this needs to be a safety recall. My truck only has 85,000 miles on it with loose steering. And has been like this for some time!.

5 Steering Is Loose problem of the 2007 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 10/31/2008

I have a 2007 Toyota Tacoma. Since I have owned it, when I drive, the steering feels loose. It seems like I am constantly trying to maintain a straight line, more so than on any other car I have owned. Also, when I stop, sometimes the engine feels like it downshifts and lurches forward a little bit.

6 Steering Is Loose problem of the 2003 Toyota Tacoma

Failure Date: 10/01/2004

Very loose steering wheel. Problem is the slip shaft in the steering column. Over time the lover shaft wears and the steering becomes loose and sloppy. Problem first shows up as looseness in the wheel and eventually turns into a clunk when driving over minor rough roads. From talking to mechanics and other Tacoma owners this is a very common problem that Toyota will not address. Problems include difficulty maintaining control over rough pavement. Wandering at all speeds. Major direction changes when breaking on all roads. Smooth or rough. Over all the truck is very difficult to drive. I've had the truck actually change lanes when I hit an unexpected rough patch of road at appox 30 mph. There was nothing I could due because of the slop in the steering wheel. Please note that this truck is very well maintained and I have gone through the entire front suspension and steering trying to fix this problem with no luck. I'm now faced with spending even more money to replace a steering column.
