Transmission does not engage (slips) in first gear from a cold start up. I am concerned this defect may cause an unsafe situation in the future.

The transmission does not engage on take off initially, it also jumps as you are slowing down ,coming to a stop at a stoplight. It has been in 4 times for this same issue. Toyota knows there is a problem, and they acknowledge it, but does not have a fix for it. What happens when my warranty is expired. It is definitely getting worse. Ed craig.
Truck is only a year old and multiple times now the transmission has failed to engage. Each time it's in drive, and on a slope or hill and when brake pedal is released with the truck in drive it starts clicking and grinding and rolls backwards, unable to engage and continue on. Truck requires that you put it into park and back into drive before you can proceed. Last time this occurred I nearly hit a child in the street as it rolled backwards and would not engage even though it was still in drive. It's been into the shop multiple times now and I am told there is nothing they could do and I have emailed Toyota. Nobody wants to help and this issue continues. This is a serious safety issue when transmission will not engage and starts rolling backward before you even realize what is happening or have a chance to react. Even if there is no hill-holding option with this transmission, the truck should not click and grind in gear once you put foot on the gas pedal to attempt to continue the drive forward. This is serious and needs investigation!!!!!!!! this is the 2nd complaint with you and there have been multiple attempts to work with Toyota to no avail. Different answer each time I take it in.

Transmission seems not to engage very quickly. Very sluggish. Mostly in the morning when put in reverse it does not seem to engage. There's also a clicking noise up by the engine passenger side. Dealer says it's normal. Never heard anything like that on any vehicle I've owned.

The transmission fails to engage in a normal amount of time after going from reverse to drive. It is long enough where you select drive and begin to apply throttle and it just revs up then engages while the engine is revved and lunges forward. It also slips when going around corners at low speed and low throttle.
Truck is only a couple months old and multiple times now the transmission has failed to engage. 2010 Tacoma crew cab with 10,000 miles, automatic transmission. When the vehicle is warm (driven) and stopped (at a light or stop sign), when the accelerator is pressed to begin driving again the transmission will not always engage immediately. There are times it takes two to three seconds for the transmission to catch and the truck to begin moving. You can hear the engine rev up but the truck will not move. Pressing harder on the accelerator to get the truck to move does nothing but rev the engine, and when the transmission does catch the vehicle can lurch forward rapidly accelerating. This situation can be very dangerous if you are not ready for it.

2009 Toyota Tacoma w/automatic transmission after decelerating below 20 mph to accommodate traffic or to make a turn the transmission fails to engage when trying to accelerate with traffic or out of the turn. The transmission seems to search for the correct gear for 2 - 3 seconds before responding to the accelerator pedal. Will someone need to die after being struck broadside trying to come out of a turn before Toyota is forced to respond to this problem?.

1. New vehicle--problem began at approximately 3000 miles. 2. Transmission disengages for approximately 3 seconds while attempting to accelerate after making a turn at approximately 10 mph--tachometer indicates engine speed reaches approximately 3000 rpm before the transmission reengages with a jerk sufficient to cause rear wheel slip on wet asphalt pavement. This problem occurs at almost every instance when I slow to approximately 10mph for a turn. This problem is apparently very common for my vehicle make /model--there are numerous posts on various internet sites under the heading "2009 Toyota transmission problems". This problem, if not resolved, will likely cause many accidents during the approaching winter months. 3. Took vehicle to dealer at 4018 miles (08/12/09)--service manager test drove vehicle, refused to acknowledge problem and stated "if check engine indicator light is not on, there are no problems with the vehicle".
2009 Tacoma, 5 spd. Auto transmission. Since the first day of owning this car (now at 2400 miles) the transmission does not respond when you accelerate after slowing probably between 1st and 2nd gear (10-15mph). The tach will go up but the transmission fails to engage and you just end up coasting into a turn or merging into traffic. This has occurred since I purchased the vehicle. Took it to the dealer and they said nothing was wrong. This poses a dangerous condition due to the hesitation and should not be an acceptable condition.
Automatic transmission fails to engage 2nd gear when accelerating into a turn or coasting down a hill. The rpms increases but transmission does not engage. Issue occurs around 10-12 mpg. Driveline rumbles from 25-10mph decelerating. Dealer says truck is normal.
Automatic transmission fails to engage upon accelerating out of a turn or after coasting down a hill. The rpms race but transmission does not engage unless accelerator is released and vehicle slows. In a pullout situation, this could be hazardous with oncoming traffic.
While usually making left turn, coming out of the turn, putting on the gas, the transmission does not engage but will rev up to approx. 2500 rpm's and then suddenly engage and lurch forward in first gear. There is a delay in power which is dangerous if crosstraffic is coming. Same slowing down through intersection, then putting gas down.
The contact owns a 2009 Toyota Tacoma. Whenever the contact turns the vehicle, the engine revs very loudly. However, the transmission does not engage. The contact is concerned that a crash could occur. The dealer stated that the failure was due to computer failure, but the manufacturer has not yet provided a remedy. The contact called the manufacturer directly and they sent a technician to test drive the vehicle. The technician stated that this was a characteristic of the vehicle and there was no remedy available. The failure mileage was 15 and current mileage was 2,100. Updated 8/18/09 the consumer stated the vehicle seemed to be missing 1st gear for a few seconds. Updated 08/21/09.

The tach will go up but the transmission fails to engage and you just end up coasting into a turn or merging into traffic. This has occurred since I purchased the vehicle. Took it to the dealer and they said nothing was wrong. But from other complaints I see this has been happening with some 09 Tacomas. You cannot pull into traffic from a rolling start safely.
The contact owns a 2004 Toyota Tacoma. The contact stated that while driving approximately 50 to 60 mph, the fifth gear disengaged without any warning. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who was unable to diagnose the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and offered no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 10. The current mileage was approximately 116,000. Updated 04/02/lj.
