1 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2012 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 10/01/2020

The contact owns a 2012 Toyota Tundra. The contact stated that the vehicle was purchased with the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was repaired at john harvey Toyota (2901 benton rd, bossier city, la 71111, (318) 741-1337). The contact stated that after the vehicle repaired, the transmission failed and the contact returned the vehicle to the same dealer where the transmission was also repaired. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to accelerate above 25 mph and was taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The mechanic determined that the secondary air injection system failed and needed to be repaired. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 115,000.

2 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2013 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 08/01/2020

On two different occasions I was driving my Tundra on the freeway at approx. 70 mph. My truck lost power and I almost caused accidents on both instances since I could not accelerate past 40 mph. I had to manage my way out of the freeway to a safe place. 2two diagnostics were performed and I received codes p0418, p1604, c1241, p2445, p2441. I was told by the Toyota dealership that there was a problem with a faulty secondary air injection system pump and other components related to the system and I was provided a repair cost of over $3,000 dollars. I was later informed, and I discovered through research, that Toyota had installed faulty/defective air pumps in thousands of Tundras 2013's like the one that I own. I reached out to corporate office but they stated that my VIN number somehow did not "qualify" as one of the affected pickups. My Tundra only has 60k miles and I use it to commute from and to work basically. I perform routine maintenance. There is obviously a problem with a defective secondary air pump system that Toyota refuses to fix. My truck is a liability on the road and this is my only means of transportation. It looses power and the check engine light activates. Toyota recalled thousands of vehicles like mine and fixed them after they acknowledged that they had placed faulty air pump systems. My truck is a potential possible cause for an accident since it unpredictably looses power on the freeway. I have not received a solution from headquarters/corporate office to repair my truck at no price since it is affected by their faulty pumps. They did offer $750 dollars towards the cost of parts, meaning that I have to come out with over $2000k out of pocket. I need Toyota to take responsibility and fix my truck.

3 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2012 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 06/13/2020

Check engine light went on. Got a code p0418-vehicle will go limp/not able to go over 25mps. Toyota has a warranty repair program in place for all 2012 Tundras with a 5. 7 size but not mine because it is a 4. 6 even though it is the exact same problem!!!.

4 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2012 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 09/18/2019

When cranking the vehicle all of a sudden as of 5 days ago the check engine light appears along with track off indicator. This throws the truck in limp mode decreasing the power of the vehicle by 50%. This happened the first morning and I was entering a on ramp to get on the high from my neighbor and almost got plowed over due to not being able to properly accelerate to highway speeds while entering the ramp. I had a technician check the issue and was told it has to due with the secondary air injection valve failing. After about four days of research I found this is a common problem it not just my vehicle but multiple years and motor sizes. Toyota apparently covered certain year models/vine but when calling regarding mine they said my vehicle wasn't covered evening though there are thousand of consumers having the exact same issue. This issue is also an expensive repairs cost upwards to $3,500-$400 to fix. Toyota is aware of the problem and apparently doesn't care that it also cause safety issues with the vehicle not having proper power to operate. This is a manufacturing defect plan and simple.

5 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2012 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 07/12/2019

I was coming off an entrance ramp merging into traffic on to a 4 lane highway when my check engine light, trac off light and blinking 4 loe came on. The engine went into limp mode greatly reducing my power and it felt like my steering control got loose. I had to pull off the road to keep from being run over by faster traffic. I was able to make it to the next off ramp and get to a mechanics shop. They hooked up a analysis computer and came back with maintenance code p2432, secondary air pumps and secondary air pump valves. Upon further research of this issue I have found out that this has been an ongoing issue with Toyota Tundras going back to 2007 models. The warranty has been extended on 2007 - 2010 models but not newer models which are still experiencing the same problem. My vehicle is considered low mileage for a 2012 with only 79,786 miles. I feel this problem constitutes a potentially dangerous safety hazard due to the drastic reduction in power which could cause an accident depending on when the parts in question fail.

6 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2012 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 04/02/2019

P0418 secondary air injector relay a malfunction. Check engine light is on.

7 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2008 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 02/09/2019

I have a 2008 Toyota Tundra. The secondary air pump failed on my vehicle. I took it to the dealer and was told I would be $3500 to repair. This is known problem with the Tundra. I was told by the dealer that Toyota had extended the warranty for this but it expired after 10 years or 150,000, I have 121,000. When the pump fails it causes the vehical to go into limp mode. I ran a errand today and the truck ran fine. I went to the store and returned to the truck. I started it and the the vsc light and check engine light came on. As I headed into traffic the vehical would not accelerate to keep up with the traffic and almost got rearended. Toyota should of had a recall on this because it is a safety feature and could cause a serious accident. This air pump is installed on Tundras and other models. I bought this truck new in 2008 and have serviced it on the mfg schedule. Since this was a known problem Toyota should have replaced the pumps during regular maintenance instead of not doing nothing and hope it does not occur. Even if I replace the pumps what says it won't happen again. I lost confidence in my truck and am afraid it might happen again.

8 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2012 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 01/22/2019

I have a 2012 Tundra with 135k and 4. 6 liter. I also see several other complaints here with my same problem. My experience is that after sudden jump in my rpms from 2 to 4 and accelerator malfunctioning, I carefully and very slowly drove my truck to the dealership this morning due. I had slow/no acceleration, check engine light on and traction off. In last couple of months, have had to pull over turn it off and back on for it to go again once before. I agree that the fix needs to be extended to all year models and engine size Tundras, not just up to 2011. Also agree that these defects could result in a fatal situation if not corrected across the board.

9 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2012 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 01/21/2019

With only 81,719 miles on my truck I had to have the air injection pump & valves replaced on 3/29/2019. I was informed that this was a common problem which had been recalled in the 2011 & 2010 models. If a recall is made within a year of the part being replaced I will be reimbursed. I work from home and the truck has only been driven for leisure or chores for the past 3 years. It was driven daily in las vegas from 2015-2017 and in orlando from 2012-2015. There have been no other engine problems. In January of 2019 the check engine light came on and the car was performing with less power but everything worked okay. Instead of driving an 8 cylinder truck it felt like driving a full size truck with only 4 cylinders. The issue happened overnight. Everything was fine and then the performance just went south. I waited 2 months to have it looked at because I rarely drive and because it still ran but with less power. I was told by Toyota that if another mechanic fixed the problem and a recall came later then I would not be reimbursed. After I was informed that this would more than likely become a recall I moved forward with using Toyota's service department. My goal is to find out if there is a recall pending for the 2012 Tundra air injection system or at least find out if the problem is widespread. If I was taken advantage of by a dealership using the recall as a tactic to get my business I want to make sure to let others know so I hope someone from the NHTSA will follow up. Thank you, christopher fuhrer 702-696-8077.

11 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2012 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 09/17/2018

Check engine light with error code p2433 0160-11 failure of air injection pumps I was getting on the highway, the engine light comes on, then the truck goes into "limp mode. " the lane I was in merged to the left. I needed to accelerate to avoid a vehicle coming up on my left, but there was no power due to being in "limp mode. " the vehicle coming up behind me had to slam on his brakes and I swerved off the shoulder. This could have been a very bad accident if there was a concrete barrier in front of me. This is a known malfunction and should be a recall item. Toyota has publically said this is a warrantable repair up to 150,000 miles on 2011 model year Tundras. I have the exact same problem on my 2012 (which was built in 2011) but Toyota is not willing to cover the repair. I will now be out of pocket $3400 if I want to keep driving my truck.

12 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2007 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 09/10/2018

I have a 5. 7l 2007 Toyota Tundra. It has been raining real bad in texas and the other day the check engine light came on when I was going down the highway and it lost power. I took it and had it checked. I have an error code p0419. I have read multiple instances online and an extended warranty was issues for 10 years 150k miles, but I am out by time, and I only have 88k miles. This is a safety issues as if I was passing someone and lost power, I could have been in a wreck. This has been a known issue by Toyota and needs to be addressed by a general recall.

13 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2012 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 08/08/2018

Check engine light and trac control lights came on around 72,000 miles. Truck started to be sluggish and lose power. The truck is in a constant 'limp' mode and fails to properly accelerate. It is definitely a safety issue as it causes unsafe conditions when trying to accelerate into a traffic lane. Took it to dealer and it is an issue with the secondary air injection valves and pumps. Dealer quoted me $2184. 25 to fix. Not currently covered under warranty. Toyota has addressed this issue with other years and models but for some reason has excluded the 2012 Tundra. I have contacted Toyota on multiple occasions and they refer me to NHTSA to file a complaint. Same issues reported for the 2012 Toyota Tundra reference NHTSA id numbers: 11129958 11129497 11128204 11109923 11104774 11076034 11075528 11065298 11002406 10994136 10926200 10567001 10489030 how many complaints have to be filed before Toyota corrects the issue?.

14 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2008 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 07/06/2018

Check engine light came on. Codes indicated failed secondary air intake valve. Took it to dealer who said I was one day outside of extended warranty. No warning of any consequences of not immediately addressing. Driving home on interstate truck truck suddenly had several warning lights start to flash and would not accellerate above 35. I was trapped in substantial truck traffic with nowhere to pull off and couldn't even climb hills without power decreasing further. Found out this intentional. Truck was put in "limp" mode by programming. To restrict speed and accelleration without warning for a nonessential fault which is not a threat to engine operation is insane.

15 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2007 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 07/01/2018

I took my truck for service at a Toyota Tundra and the shop informed me that my air pump was defective. I can't go above 30 mph up hill and it doesn't shift correctly when my truck is in limp mode. The traction control light, vehicle swerve control light, and check engine light stays on.

16 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2013 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 05/01/2018

Cranked truck and check engine light came on. Upon computer diagnostics, find out there is a problem with the emissions system - stuck air injection control valves. After visiting two shops and talking to two more I find out this is an extremely common problem. There are literally tens of thousands Tundra's, sequoia's, etc with the exact same problem. There has been no recall, but Toyota has set up customer support programs (csp's) to reimburse some of those affected by high repair bills $3,000 - $5,000. This was obviously a very poor design by Toyota that's been dumped on their customers. My vehicle is not covered by the csp.

17 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2012 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 02/23/2018

In evening hours December 2017 I started my truck and the traction control light, check engine light, and flashing 4 lol was on. Drove home and had corrodied battery terminal. Reset lott and went away. On February 23th, 2018 my wife started truck and all three lifts were on again. Made a appointment with Toyota dealership and they stated had weak air injection pump and closed switch valve. They wrote cause of high water. Drove off the lot and the logs came on again. I've not even own d my truck for two years and never had it through high water. Toyota told me it was not under warranty for the air system, because my truck is a 2012. The cost to fix this was $3,000 dollars. On way home my truck was in limp mode and I barely was able to make it up a hill. Now I'm out of a truck for work and can barely drive across town. There is numerous reports of the air injection system failing and no one has opened a investigation.

18 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2011 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 05/17/2017

While driving the check engine light came on and I lost propulsion power resulting in vehicle slowing down and almost creating an accident from behind. I had the vehicle checked via a obd2 code checker which resulted in code p2442. After verifying code, it looks as if it is a faulty air intake. Looking through several sources on the internet, it seems to be a very common problem that Toyota is refusing to acknowledge or repair. Please take this issue into consideration and help the consumer. Fuel propulsion system I purchased my 2011 Tundra quarter end 2011. It has less than 100k miles and is well maintained by the dealer. Late may 2017 e light came on and I took the vehicle to the dealer to have this checked. I learned that I had an issue with the secondary air injection system. The estimated cost of the repair was quoted at $3,000.

19 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2007 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 09/14/2015

My vsc off light has been blinking when I started my truck when I got off work at 3:00p. M. Central time. My check engine light is on as well. I brought my truck to auto zone for a diagnostics test and came up with code p2440. My vsc off light came on one day not loo long ago, but went off so I thought nothing of it. Loss of power.

20 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2007 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 02/24/2015

Didnt notice till after a mile of driving but my check engine light, vsc, and 4lo were flashing. I could not accelerate past 50 miles per hour. Unfortunately the Toyota dealership was closed and I took it in to auto shop to get the codes scanned to provide to Toyota dealership. In order to get home I had to get the codes cleared out to get it out of limp mode but I drove it to the Toyota dealership the next day and provided the codes and necessary information. Unfortunately they needed to get the codes off themselves I explained that there was a 2007 and 2008 Tundra – TSB 032908 but they couldnt verify the problem and told me that next time it happens to bring it in without resetting the codes. Well it happened again today almost a month later. I'm taking the vehicle to a local dealership other than the initial one as towing charges would be outrages. I hope Toyota can get his corrected for others regardless if you have the codes or not it should be a mandatory notice for all Toyota Tundra owners so you do not get stranded far from a dealership or eventually have that issue as it is provided only if you have up to 150k miles or 10years from when the vehicle was purchased.

The failure recurred on numerous occasions. The check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the secondary air injection valve needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. However, the failure recurred and the vehicle was taken back to the mechanic who diagnosed once again that the secondary air injection valve needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. However, the failure persisted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 165,000. The VIN was unavailable. Oo.

23 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2007 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 04/10/2014

Check engine came on, took to local Toyota shop, checked codes, p0012, camshaft position, "a" timing over retarded-bank one & p0022 same for bank number two. Activated both vvt systems & checked operation of both vvt. All working fine at this time. All four oil control valves test working fine at this time. Checked oil control valve filter test working fine at this time. If check engine light comes on again after that, then need to replace camshaft timing gears inside engine. Has Toyota addressed this problem? are there any recalls?.

24 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2005 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 04/08/2014

Check engine light came on and the truck lost power. The engine revved like it was trying to go, but had no more forward momentum. The speed at the time of the incident was 50mph. Hooked up the computer and the error code read that it is the air switching valve. Error codes p-1442, switching valves are stuck closed, #2 in bank 1 and #2 in bank 2 of the secondary air inspection system. Same issue on 2007-10 Tundra and was recalled due to defect. My truck has the same issue, has under 150,000 miles, and has been very well maintained. Told by Toyota that it is not a recall at this time and if there is one in the future, they will reimburse us our costs. Driving down a two lane highway with 18 wheelers behind you and losing power, going 65-70mph, is going to cause a wreck. I don't know how Toyota would reimburse me my husband.

25 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2006 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 05/27/2013

While towing a travel trailer on a mountain pass freeway in wa state with no shoulder. Going up the hill and started to put the foot down on gas to get speed up for the upcoming steep hill, the check engine light came on and all power was lost, engine went into limp mode with no place to pull over. I had to travel at 8mph, up the hill until I found a suitable pull out spot for the truck and 30ft trailer. I was almost was rear ended multiple times even with emergency flashers going. This has happened 2x, both in the exact same spot doing the exact same thing. The first time was only a few months after my extended warranty ran out in and the dealer was unwilling to do anything to help out. But they were more than happy to charge $100 to tell me it would cost $4200 to repair it, including the secondary $1800 egc vacuum pump, which only runs, as the dealer told me, 30-45 seconds at start up, then the pump does nothing. Why does this occur after running 2+ hours?? the second time it happened, I was towing the same trailer at the exact same place ending up going only 8 mph uphill again on the hiway w/60mph limit!! this time at the advice of a friend, once out of traffic. I disconnected the battery for 10 minutes, reconnected it and the computer had reset itself and the truck ran fine the last 45 minutes home. I no longer travel that road with no shoulder as I am afraid it's going to cause a major accident. Toyota is aware of this problem in the 05-06 models. Yet are fixing it under recall on 07+ models but won't help anyone else with an '06 or older. This is my 3rd Toyota and last. The first time it happened I had 60000 miles, the 2nd time it was at 68500 miles. I only have 87500 on it now, at 10 1/2 years of ownership. I am actively looking for a truck that has a company that will stand behind its brand. I'm done with Toyota. They still haven't fixed my airbags either!!.

26 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2008 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 02/18/2013

Was driving 08 Tundra up hill around 20 mph and cel vss lights came on lo range light flashing on dash truck lost all power. Found out code p2442 secondary air induction system failure put truck into limp mode thousands of dollars in just parts to repair this system. So many people having same problems with same vehicle. Toyota should issue a recall and re engineer a remedee for this poor design at no cost to the consumer. I spent alot of money on a truck to avoid these problems, now I haved to drive an unsafe truck stuck in limp mode because I do not have the funds to repair, two thousand in just parts, Toyota is charging people 4 to five thousand dollars to repair this problem when it should be recalled at no cost to the consumer due to the poor engineering and faulty design on the secondary air induction system pumps and switching valves. . . . . . I am very surprised and disapointed in Toyota for they have always backed up there product but this is a poor product that they are not backing up when they most certainly should stand behind it. Also this system should be redesigned to put on check engine light but should not put vehicle in limp mode it is a serious safety issue especialy when trying to get on the highway etc. . . . . Also the cost and problems of this uneeded system is outrageous, all this system does is force air into the exhaust for the first couple of minutes of engine running at startup. I swore by Toyota for over twenty years, not any more , wish I got a chevy.

27 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2012 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 11/26/2012

Check engine light illuminated as I departed my driveway. I called Toyota service to schedule an appointment which occurred three days later. Toyota service department determined that the air pump, which is part of the emissions system, failed. I was advised the truck could not be driven. As of today (12/17/12) the part has still not arrived at boch Toyota south. Will the defective air pump cause premature failure of the catalytic converter?.

28 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2008 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 10/20/2012

Driving up a; hill all the sudden it loses power going u a hill all my dash light starts to blink check engine light 4 hi lo are blinking and starts to shake thru a p2442 code this is suppose to be a quality built truck for air injection pumps to be going out and after reading all the issues Toyota has had on the 07 and 08 you think they would put better parts in the trucks . After reading about this issue it is common anywhere from 11,000 to 60,000 miles this issue is a 1,700 out of pocket us doing this our self will never do business with Toyota after it breaking at 40,000 miles.

Almost immediately, there was a sudden loss of power, which almost caused him to come to a complete stop. The consumer took the vehicle to his local mechanic, who informed him of what the failure was. When the mechanic called Toyota about the parts, the mechanic was informed about an extended warranty from three years/36,000 to five years/ 70,000. The mechanic was also informed about a defect with the system, which caused water infiltration, which could compromise the system. The mechanic advised the consumer to visit the dealer. The dealer did confirm the diagnosis was correct. However, the consumer was informed the warranty only applied to a few states and the consumers stated was not included. The consumer paid $2300 for the repair.

32 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2007 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 03/15/2012

This is a recurring problem. Initially, my truck was taken to a Toyota dealer service center on 3/15/2012 to an issue with my check engine light, slip indicator light, 4-wheel drive (4lo), vsc off all came on, sluggish acceleration/loss of acceleration occurred when driven & my gas mileage/fuel efficiency decreased (my truck appeared to 'run rich'). Initially the warning/indicator lights would occasionally stay on when the truck was started, other times they would not. Eventually, they just stayed on whenever the truck was started. When serviced, I was told that the issue was covered by my warranty & the secondary air switching valve was replaced which should have fixed the issue. Just over a year later, 3/19/2013, the same issue has occurred after being told the problem was fixed! the mileage that this occurred at was around 44,000. The problem was presenting in the same way - loss of acceleration/sluggish acceleration (extremely dangerous not to have acceleration while traveling on a highway/interstate), the same warning/indicator lights came on & the gas mileage/fuel efficiency decreased because the truck is 'running rich' again. Took it to a Honda dealership service center to make sure I would be able to drive home. The service technician gave the error code of p2440 which is an error code for the air intake pump. Honda dealership was unable to fix the problem because of the make of truck. Took the vehicle to the same dealership where this problem was initially diagnosed & 'fixed' the first time. Have been told by the service technician that the issue is the same problem as last time. However, this technician has informed me that the reason this problem has occurred yet again, is because there is a passenger side & a driver side part. The one replaced last year was the passenger side. This time, it's the drivers side that needs to be replaced.

33 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2008 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 02/06/2012

My truck was parked for 3 days, then when I started the engine all of the traction control lights started flashing, the check engine light remained on steady, and 4lo light flashed, truck would not travel over 30 mph and became very sluggish. This has happened three times in one week, and disconnecting battery for a few minutes cleared the problem. Local dealership said the problem is a "failed actuator ecu assembly failed communication c1201". Cost of repair is $2,280. 41. Warranty does not cover repair because this part is only covered by the 3 year/36000 mile warranty. Drivetrain warranty does not cover this component. This is a safety concern because when this problem occurs while driving there is no warning and could result in a multiple vehicle accident. The only other part that causes this problem is an air pump assembly which is now required to be covered by Toyota for 10 years or 150,000 miles. Very discouraging to own a truck less than five years old with 55,000 miles and requires a $2300 repair.

34 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2008 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 05/01/2011

Truck went into "limp" mode and the vsc, check engine light and the "traction" light all came on. Took it to autozone to get a read out and it had a p2442 for a Subaru, but was figured to be the asv (air switch valve) or the aip (air induction pump) on bank 2. Considering that my truck is out of warranty with 62000 miles and all the forum and websites that I have been to that told me it would cast any where from 1000 to 5000 bucks to fix, I checked it out myself. The asv on the driver side has a metal plate that is broken and is keeping the valve opened. I have called a dealer and they told me they have no clue when the parts could be in because of the tsunami in japan. I am very upset as to this issue as I am not able to bypass the it and get my truck running correctly. Toyota needs to step up and make a recall on these pumps and valves. I was told that one of the reasons for the issues is that water gets in the pimps. I cannot see how water is getting in these pumps and valves as they are enclosed. This is a design flaw and needs to be rectified.
