1 Tailgate problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 09/11/2020

My 2000 Toyota Tundra has extreme rust and corrosion on the rear frame of the truck, bumper and tailgate connections are corroded excessive rust. Trouble with the trailer wiring harness. Something has burned up a box on the wiring harness. Parking break cable can not be fixed. Therefore there isn't a working parking break.

2 Tailgate problem of the 2002 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 09/17/2019

"Toyota recalls" chasis/frame - I had every recall or service bulletin completed by Toyota sales/service in our area. Toyota's fix for the frame rust did not work. I was informed this week that there are now holes in the frame. The tailgate is rusting along with the bed of the truck as I was able to see the underneath of the bed when the Toyota dealership put it up on the hosit yesterday. This truck has been maintained properly, has approximately 135,000 miles on it, and the body is still in good condition. Although I was notified this week about the frame, it's has been on going for some time and I do not understand why no one in the last 2 years informed us of the frame rust damage. Even the Toyota service department that had serviced the vehicle earlier this year did not inform me of the extent of frame rust damage.

Tl the contact owns a 2019 Toyota Tundra. While the contact was loading wood into the vehicle, the bed caved in on the vehicle. Shortly after, the tailgate fractured. The body of the vehicle could be pushed in by hand. The vehicle was taken to l and s Toyota (248 auto plaza drive, beckley, wv 25801, (304) 252-8548) where it was diagnosed that a new bed liner needed to be installed. The vehicle was repaired. 5 Tailgate problem of the 2003 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 01/01/2016

My Tundra 2003 sr5 accesscab 4x4 trd. It has rusted so bad the last 5 yrs. It will no longer pass hawaii safety inspection. I have had the truck since about 2007. It has been a great running truck. Engine and transmission are in good shape. New brakes. But the rust has ruined the frame, tailgate and back of bed! have not driven for a year!.

6 Tailgate problem of the 2010 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 09/22/2015

The truck tailgate was noticed to have paint bubbling toward the bottom on the tailgate. Further inspection shows moderate rust on the inner lip of the bottom of the tailgate where two panels come together, and is noticable when it is in a lowered position. After calling Toyota corporate national customer service line and notifying them of the issue, I was asked if rust was on the frame. Further more, I was told there is no program they have to help with such an issue. I had not had the ability to inspect the frame and undercarriage at the time of the call, but upon ending of the call, was able to have a look at it. There is considerable rust on seems of the frame welds throughout the bottom and other areas.

7 Tailgate problem of the 2007 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 01/03/2010

The tailgate on my 2007 Toyota Tundra is coming apart at the seams. I have had the tailgate replaced once for the failure, and the new one is showing the same failure. Judging by the pictures on the internet this is a common problem with the Toyota tailgates. It is just a matter of time before this design flaw causes injury to a person and or property damage. A simple internet search for Toyota tailgate failures shows the results of such a failure. I do load my quad using the tailgate as a load bearing system ,reason for this is the ramp systems made for this task are designed to use a tailgate. I would like to see the tailgate brought up to the standards of Toyotas competition.

8 Tailgate problem of the 2004 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 12/01/2009

Excessive rust pretty much everywhere. Just had to replace the rear differential and associated parts because rust caused differential leak. Cost was over 3,500. Replaced rusted brake lines and calipers. Tailgate wire rusted and broke. Opening mechanism to tailgate is rusted and is extremely difficult (if not impossible) to open/close. Rear bumper is rusted through, and not safe to step on. Hitch receiver is completely rusted and cannot remove hitch now. Skid plate and brackets rusted through - skid plate fell off. Dealer just inspected the truck and will be replacing the entire frame because of excessive rust.

9 Tailgate problem of the 2008 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 07/01/2009

I have an white 08 Tundra cewmax limited. The paint is horrible. It seems like every little light touch of it brings it down to the grey undercoating. For instance, my key fob hit the gate when I was unlocking the tailgate and it chipped it right down to the grey undercoating. The truck is peppered with these probably from road debris. I could understand a little here or there but not this many and having it happen so easily most recently my clearcoat has started to fail and my truck is only 4 years old. It gets washed almost weekly and waxed every month with meguires nxt 2. 0. I know every little ding, scratch and dent on the truck and everytime I go to wash it, there are more. The paint/clearcoat is not very protective and has not held up. My other car is 12 years old and gets the same car care treatment as my Tundra and its paint is 100% better than this truck. It is also a Toyota and white.

10 Tailgate problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 06/02/2009

Our 2000 Toyota Tundra has continuously let us down in several areas such as; brake vibration, and the emergency brake cam arms are rusted so when releasing the parking brake, the shoes stay engaged, dragging on the brake pads causing warped drums. We have had a cracked exhaust manifold since 35k miles, transmission failure at 63k miles, continuous oxygen sensors issues (including two that fell out), broken sway bar mount, rusted tailgate mounts, and now the extreme frame rust. The truck is being eaten away by rust, causing parts to break and even fall off. Now the extensive frame rust has caused parts to fall off, and break. The latest is the passenger side spring shackle mount that was cracked and flexing, and now has completely broken off allowing the spring to rest along the underside of the body. We are very disappointed because this truck has been completely unreliable; it will not pass inspection and is now completely unsafe to drive.

11 Tailgate problem of the 2004 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 12/31/2008

Rust on everything under the truck as well as the rear bumper. Parts that have had to be replaced because of rust and/or rust perforation or need to be replaced: 1) entire frame ¿ perforation greater than 10mm found on passenger siderail 2) rear differential (leaking from rust perforation) 3) brake lines 4) power steering line (leaking from rust) 5) skid plate (support brackets rusted - fell off while driving) 6) brake calipers (multiple times) 7) coil springs 8) axles (front and back) 9) control arms 10) cv- joint 11) boots 12) hitch receiver 13) exhaust 14) muffler 15) camber bolt 16) multiple sets of tires (unable to align tires properly due to rusted/seized camber bolt) causing premature tread wear. 17) brake drums (warped and pitted) 18) wheel bearing 19) truck tailgate support wires ¿ wires rusted and broke. Tailgate won¿t open/close without extreme effort because it is not aligned properly. 20) shocks/struts 21) seals, brackets, nuts and bolts - the parts listed above is not complete. Basically, everything you see under the truck is suffering from extreme rust and/or perforated. *truck has had a horrible shimmy for years that no one has been able to figure out, particularly bad when towing. Steering wheel shakes violently as well as the entire truck. Improved slightly when rear differential and axles were replaced. Most likely related to frame warp or instability. *truck has had issues with getting in and out of 4wd. Inconsistent with how long it takes to get in and out of 4wd. There is a loud and jarring clunk when engaging or disengaging 4wd. *truck feels like it is on the verge of going out of control when a hole or bump is hit. The truck will literally jump sideways. *traction stability control comes on randomly when hitting a bump or hole. Another mystery to mechanic.

12 Tailgate problem of the 2008 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 02/15/2008

08 Tundra crewmax. Has multiple scratches in the paint. Paint is very thin (one coat). Paint can not even be washed without scratching. Truck has scratches on it from leaning over the bed, also around all the door handles from just opening the doors, not to mention all the marks around the door and tailgate from just our hands. $45,000 truck. . . You would think that they could atleast put a good coat of paint on it. This will cost me thousands to fix. The truck has never been off road and should have no visible marks. This is ridiculous.

13 Tailgate problem of the 2006 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 02/04/2008

Approximately 4 years ago, I could not open the tailgate of my Toyota Tundra. I took it to the dealership and they replaced the clip. Two months ago, I had the same problem. I took it to the dealership and they said it would cost $179 to fix it. I asked what was wrong, and was told that it was a plastic clip that keeps breaking. I told them that the truck had been in the garage for the past 2 years because my husband was out of the country. They said that it was just the plastic breaking. I said that it seems to be a design flaw. They didn't agree. So I am now having to pay for it. This clip is only warranteed for 1 year. So that means I will be replacing it again in a year (another $179). That sounds like a design flaw to me. The company sent out a memo about this problem on 2007 models, but not 2006. What can I do?.

14 Tailgate problem of the 2007 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 01/02/2008

You already have other complaints about tailgate failure on 2007 Toyota Tundra trucks. I have read about them and seen the pictures. I have personally contacted Toyota motors to get a safe weight maximum for this tailgate and they have twice refused to provide this information. In their latest correspondence they claim the tailgate has no rating as it is not a weight bearing part. This contradicts their own website where they sell a bed extender accessory that is used to increase the capacity by using the tailgate as a weight bearing part of the truck. I would appreciate any assistance you can provide to force Toyota to reveal the safe tailgate weight limits.

15 Tailgate problem of the 2007 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 10/20/2007

My tailgate is cracking along the inside seem. This looks to be a common flaw judging by the Toyota forums on the internet. I don't even have 4000 miles on my truck, and have only used it for light/medium duty. This is supposed to be a heavy duty truck and this looks to be a serious safety issue.

16 Tailgate problem of the 2007 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 10/20/2007

1. My tailgate latch system is not working as expected and is flimsy. 2. My tailgate is weak and small cracking at seams at side where not welded, and this is with my 215 lb. Frame stepping on it to get in bed. I wanted to purchase bed extender to carry longer objects as I have done in my traded in f 150 but tailgate cannot handle my weight much less object. I know others that load atv's and motorcycles with complete seam failure, so I don't dare put more weight on gate. Gate can come off easy as I have noted in friends Tundra while hauling with tailgate down. Toyota dealer blamed him for doing something we have been doing with our work trucks for over 10 years. The gate panel to access internal gate components is so thin that just by pressing with hand, I can bend it. You must understand that a tailgate needs to be more durable in its latching design, which my crewmax is not, and definitely not come apart at seams by someone sitting on it or bend and fail. There is a standard in which I as well as others are used to in tailgate strength as I had on 1999 f 150 without any issues and with three grown men sitting on gate with combined weight of over 650 lbs gate won't bend and frame didn't come apart at seams. I have a motorcycle that I now cannot use extender to haul due to this poor design. I am a first time Toyota owner and I like my truck overall, but it is a truck and I expected to use it as such. I like my Tundra very much, however, I believe any reasonable person would conclude that the tailgate is of poor design, and questionable strength for ?the truck that is changing it all?. We will see what Toyota will do or not do about this. I have fixed latch at dealer temporary but I know there is TSB if it happens again. Tailgate quality in strength as well as some bed bounce issues is a whole different matter! voicing my concern before someone gets hurt.

17 Tailgate problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 06/10/2007

This vehicle was purchased at greensburg Toyota, greensburg, PA. This vehicle has had brake lines replaced, fuel lines replaced, the frame corroded and rusted out, fuel lines rusted out, the tie rods rusted out, the tailgate rusted out, the electrical outlets for the backup and tail lights were shorting out, the entire body on this vehicle is rusting. This vehicle is a complete menace to the Toyota company. This vehicle had the front axles rusted out and the wheel fell off while driving it.

18 Tailgate problem of the 2002 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 01/03/2002

I have a 2002 Toyota Tundra that has been rusting away since the day I bought it new off the lot. It started with the wheels rusting. I brought this up to the dealership many times and they said nothing could be done about it. Next was the tailgate and now the underside of my truck looks like a 20 year old vehicle that was sitting for years. I have heard and read that other Tundra owners are having the same problem and I agree that Toyota needs to do something about this. Toyota's are not cheap, I bought this vehicle because I thought the quality was suppose to be excellent. I also have a claim in with Toyota.
