2 Frame Rust problem of the 2006 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 03/22/2021

While driving on highway, felt a and heard a bump (no bumps in road) and lost most steering capabilities. After pulling to side of road. I noticed tires were pointed in different directions. After looking under the vehicle, I could see large rust holes in the frame and the rack was no longer connected to the frame. Toyota inspected the frame under recall in 2015 and said there were no problems and painted only the rear portion of the frame with an anti corrosion paint which has now also rusted away. I believe the frame should have been replaced under the original recall instead of covering with paint that did not do the job.

3 Frame Rust problem of the 2006 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 03/15/2021

My 2006 Toyota Tundra was just serviced at reputable mechanic and alerted me to the rust hole through the passenger side leaf spring bracket. Additionally, the frame is separating from the truck due to the severity of the rust. The frame is defoliating in sheets of rust, very similar to the consistency of shale. Contacted corporate Toyota immediately. Case was pushed to a senior manager and finally received a return call 13 days later. They stated there was nothing that could warrant a frame replacement based on the age of my vehicle, the mileage (248,000) miles, and no current recalls. I find this totally unacceptable. Toyota is a company I thought was based on performance, reliability, and safety, but I guess it's not. I received the campaign to battle the rusty frames back in 2014 and was proactive and completed that at the dealer. The dealer performed the undercoating which did absolutely nothing but cover the rust and increase the breakdown of the frame. Since then, I had driven my truck to and from work and relied on it to safely transport my family everywhere, but not any longer. I find this to be comically irresponsible for Toyota to turn a blind eye. There are so many other 2006 Tundras that are having the same exact issues, however the class action lawsuit only lists 2007-2008 Tundras that could warrant frame replacement. However, a coworker just took his 2005 Tundra in for the airbag recall, and they discovered the frame needed to be replaced. It has over 200,000 miles similar to mine and is getting a new frame??? corporate Toyota wouldn't comment on that. I'm at a loss and don't understand how Toyota expects anyone to just walk away and do nothing. Class action lawsuit will occur again for the 2006 Tundras. It doesn't matter if there is no warranty, or campaign, or recall. The Toyota name is on the Tundra and that is what makes them liable. Join me!.

4 Frame Rust problem of the 2006 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 03/14/2021

I've owned the truck for a year bought on Dec 2019 3rd owner. I see that mines not listed as recalled for frame rust but I'm not sure why when the gas tank looks like it going to fall off and seems only critical sections are severely rusted like the gas tank and where the rear shock absorber sits. I could only see these spots now because they are hard to spot places where the frame joins.

5 Frame Rust problem of the 2005 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 01/06/2021

2005 Tundra frame is rusted in many places. Very bad where frame sections meet and now the frame is rusting through the main horizonal frame itself as the attached picture indicates. This has been an ongoing issue for years but is bad enough now that it is not safe and will not pass inspection. I know there was a recall on this frame and I was told it was ok when I brought it in for the recall. I t has been rusting ever sense. We have only purchased Toyotas and Lexus vehicles for the last 20 or more years and this is the third truck rust has totaled. Please help.

6 Frame Rust problem of the 2004 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 11/14/2020

The frame is rusted to the extreme that previous owners have already had it repaired on the drivers side just behind the front axle for the sway bar to mount. I have found the same issue of rust through the frame is now on the passenger side and bout to do the same thing. I also find extreme rust just in front of the rear axle. Extreme rust holding the transfer case in the vehicle is very thin also.

7 Frame Rust problem of the 2003 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 11/13/2020

The cross member on my 2003 Toyota Tundra (part no. 51206) is exhibiting extensive and premature rust and corrosion at both connection points with the main frame rails such that the main frame rails have rusted through, leaving multiple holes approximately the size of a quarter. The cross member supports the fuel tank, among other components, and thus the corrosion poses a significant safety hazard. As a result, the vehicle, which is otherwise in satisfactory and operational condition, failed its annual state inspection. Toyota previously applied a rust inhibitor to the frame under its limited service campaign which was intended to remedy the defect, but such application failed to prevent the premature corrosion and Toyota has since refused to remedy the defect.

8 Frame Rust problem of the 2007 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 11/07/2020

I have very bad rust in the bed of my 07 DC. I bought the truck new. The rust was obscured by the Toyota bed liner until I saw other owners posting and checked it out. I keep my truck in immaculate condition and it only has 57,000 miles. The rust is coming from underneath and is focused around the bolts that hold the bed to the frame. I am afraid that the bed will fall off of the truck! I am trying to bring awareness to this defect before it causes an accident. A call to the dealer and every post that I see says that Toyota will not help. This is not an isolated issue and Toyota should take responsibility for the poor workmanship and replace the defective parts before there are accidents. My frame is also rusted. Toyota dealer sprayed a solution on the frame but it is still rusting and is affecting this bed rust as well.

9 Frame Rust problem of the 2004 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 10/27/2020

Vehicle failed its yearly state inspection due to severe rust making the frame structurally compromised. The vehicle was inspected by Toyota in 2014 and treated with a corrosion resistant compound under a limited service campaign. Six years after the application Toyota now advises the frame is structurally compromised due to severe rust.

10 Frame Rust problem of the 2002 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 09/09/2020

Rust problem in frame and rear crossmember.

11 Frame Rust problem of the 2002 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 09/01/2020

Tl the contact owns a 2002 Toyota Tundra. The contact stated that the frame was rusted and there was a hole behind the driver's side door. The contact called acton Toyota of littleton (221 great rd, littleton, MA 01460, (978) 263-1500) however, the vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The contact stated the failure was like NHTSA campaign number: 09v444000 (structure). The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 220,000.

12 Frame Rust problem of the 2001 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 09/01/2020

My vehicle was supposed to have been repaired under a previous recall for frame rust, with a coating, but it is apparent that Toyota did not repair all area's as today driving down the highway my shockmount completely rusted away, causing me to almost hit several cars, and pieces of the mount flew behind me into traffic. From the outside this truck looks to be in excellent shape, however the tow driver looked underneath and said he could not believe the rust damage. My vehicle has now been deemed unsafe and not roadworthy. My fear is how many unsuspecting owners are there that thought the recall repairs were done correctly, and could have an accident that could lead to serious injury or death if these go untreated, repaired or replaced. I was driving on the main outerbelt freeway in columbus, I-270 at 60-65 mph when the part came off.

13 Frame Rust problem of the 2006 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 08/18/2020

My vehicle recently failed inspection due to frame rust in the rear and possibly in the front of the vehicle. I previously had taken the vehicle to a local Toyota dealer to inspect the frame during a recall notice. The dealership did not do anything to the vehicle. The vehicle has almost 196,000 miles and should last a lot longer. But it is useless now and the frame rust problems of these models is unacceptable. The frame should be able to last the duration of the vehicle and Toyota has known about this problem for a very long time.

14 Frame Rust problem of the 2005 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 07/24/2020

2005 Tundra with major frame rust. Took it in during the original recall where they sprayed the frame with a "rust preventative coating" which fell off in a year. The frame is now dangerously rusty and Toyota refuses to do anything more. Toyota needs to be held responsible for replacing all of the affected frames, not just the ones that didn't pass their "inspection" back when the original recall happened. The rust through problem is a very well known issue and there are thousands of Tundras and tacomas on the road that are dangerously rusty because of Toyota's faithless response to the problem. Toyota needs to be forced to replace the remaining frames that were part of the recall.

15 Frame Rust problem of the 2003 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 07/02/2020

My 2003 Tundra frame is rusted and cracking. I believe this should be covered by the limited service campaign (lsc) a0f.

16 Frame Rust problem of the 2006 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 05/21/2020

Frame is rusting away in different areas. Cannot attach a tow hitch since the rust is making the whole tail end brittle. Don't know when the entire frame will be unsafe to drive. I bought this car recently but it was used up until 2016 in north states where there is a lot of snow and ice.

17 Frame Rust problem of the 2006 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 05/12/2020

Handed down 2006 Tundra to my son, he took it in for small leak and the mechanic said frame was rusted so bad there were holes in it!! we had the "recall" work done in 2015. We were never offered a new frame, they said we only needed the spray. Now 5 yrs later we can't even let our son drive his own truck!! it has 230,000 miles. Still alot of miles left and the body has some minor blemishes but in good condition. Don't have any pictures right now, just found out about it. Called Toyota resolution line and they said there is nothing they can do!! I refuse to accept this bc we did what we were supposed to do and they aren't even living up to their own "fix"!! cannot afford a new frame for my son right now! need help or guidance with this!.

18 Frame Rust problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 04/10/2020

My frame is rusted on most in to an I no yall had a recall but I don't know if its stall good for this truck ## #vpic# 1 - check digit (9th position) does not calculate properly #vpic#.

19 Frame Rust problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 03/13/2020

Rear frame rusted obvious manufacturer defect. Will not pass safety inspection.

20 Frame Rust problem of the 2004 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 03/02/2020

Yes I have a 2004 Toyota Tundra crew cab truck is in good shape but recently found my frame is rusting away I've contacted Toyota because they had a recall before but they will not do anything about it I've read some Toyota forms and apparently this is not a rare case this is unbelievable this is the reason people are killed going to work frame just brakes I want something done before that someone killed is me.

21 Frame Rust problem of the 2004 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 02/29/2020

Truck was purchased brand new. It was brought to dealer for recall and they did not resolve the issue. Now recall is expired and vehicle is dangerous to drive and frame is rusted and there are holes. Almost had an accident when I turned and went down a hill and the brakes did not hold. Other incidents have occurred over the years.

22 Frame Rust problem of the 2003 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 02/18/2020

I recently had an exhaust leak on my truck and would occasionally hear some clunking noises under the vehicle. I went under the truck to investigate the extent of the exhaust leak and noticed that one of the sway bar links was no longer connected and that one end was rusted off. I ordered replacement parts and tried to jack the vehicle up under the frame and I heard crunching and saw the jack pressing into the frame from the bottom and crumbles of rust came showering down. I relocated the jack to a different portion of the frame and continued to jack it up and more creaking of the frame and rusty parts broke free and fell to my driveway. The frame behind the driver's side front wheel is badly rusted and has lost its structural integrity. There are several 5"+ horizontal and vertical "cuts" into the frame both on the side and bottom surrounding the nearby front cross-member. This excessive rust corrosion compromises the vehicle's safety, stability, and crash-worthiness. We can no longer use this truck for its intended purpose of hauling a heavy payload or towing a trailer which were engineered by Toyota. This has also greatly affected the value of the vehicle. We took the vehicle to the Toyota dealer in westminster, MD and they performed the anti-rust spray treatment to the frame in 2010 under the limited service campaign which obviously didn't work. The exterior painted surfaces of the body are all in excellent condition as I applied a coating of wax at least annually. The truck has just now reached 90,000 miles and I don't feel that I got the value out of the truck for what I paid brand new for it back in 2003 when I trusted the Toyota name. I recently contacted the Toyota dealer in westminster, MD again and I was told that the recall for the frame expired in 2012 and that there was nothing else they could do.

23 Frame Rust problem of the 2006 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 02/12/2020

Frame rusted, Toyota will not replace. Never sent me inspection notice, they say I missed my opportunity. Not happy, disabled and only transportation. Covered for a certain amount of time, but was never notified.

24 Frame Rust problem of the 2004 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 02/10/2020

Frame is so rusted out that the front suspension has nothing to support it. The truck can no longer be safely driven. Toyota had me take the truck in and have the frame checked for rust in 2015. At that time they told the frame was good. I contacted the local dealer on 2/17 this year and they could not help me and that I would have to contact corporate. I contacted them same day and was told since they checked it once there was nothing else they could do for me. Hard to believe the frame could so completely deteriorate in that five year period. I know I'm not the only one having this problem. I hope something can be done to help all these people out.

25 Frame Rust problem of the 2004 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 02/09/2020

All my front suspension components failed. I noticed that the frame had rusted through near the front wheel passenger side and has buckled and shifted as a result. My upper and lower ball joints and cv axle were damaged while my truck was in motion turning into the safeway gas station chester MD. February 9 of this year when the suspension failed to support the truck. The passenger side ball joint and cv axle were damaged. Tie rods and sway bar stabilizers were all worn and broken as well.

26 Frame Rust problem of the 2006 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 01/06/2020

2006 Toyota Tundra. Consumer writes in regards to rusting frame. In 2015 consumer received a recall for the frame of the vehicle. Vehicle was taken to sullivan brothers Toyota (kingston, MA) and the frame was sprayed with rust inhibitor. Consumer took vehicle to dealer in December 2019 to have frame inspected. Consumer was told that there was some surface rust that was no threat to vehicle. On 01/06/2020 a brake line broke and vehicle was taken to the dealer. Consumer was told that in the rear of the vehicle the frame was almost rusted through. He was also informed that the gas tank was wired to the frame. Consumer says that he was not informed when this took place. Consumer requested to have the frame replaced, but dealer referred him to the manufacturer. Manufacturer refused to provide assistance.

27 Frame Rust problem of the 2005 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 12/21/2019

Main frame of the 2005 Tundra is rotten from rust and a chunk of the frame has fallen out. See picture. I contacted local Toyota dealer and they said there is nothing they can do as recall has expired and Toyota corporate will not do absolutely nothing. This Tundra was supposed to be sprayed in 2014 as part of the "fix" but the frame is rusting and rotting apart. More signs of rots are visible on the frame.

28 Frame Rust problem of the 2003 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 12/07/2019

2003 Toyota Tundra showing severe signs of frame rust and corrosion damage rendering vehicle unsafe to operate on a public roadway. This vehicle in every other way gas been manufactured to perform for many more years excepting the foundation of the vehicle, the framework. Many, many of these vehicles are in use on american streets by individuals and families who are in dire risk and posing a life threatening risk to all other drivers on the road.

29 Frame Rust problem of the 2005 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 12/07/2019

The contact owns a 2005 Toyota Tundra. The contact experienced issues with the vehicle's frame ever since it was purchased. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for routine maintenance who stated that the frame was rusted. The manufacturer was contacted and provided case number: 1912111347. The contact was informed that the repairs were not covered. The failure mileage was 156,000.

30 Frame Rust problem of the 2003 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 12/05/2019

On 12/05/11 newark Toyota completed recall ssc90m phase 2-crc application to my rusted frame. Almost immediately I notice a bonding failure and delamination of the crc application. By November of 2013 I asked the same service lane manager, bill c. And the technician that performed the work to inspect the failed application. I asked the technician why it failed and he stated "I did not prepare the surface correctly before I placed the application". I appreciated his honesty but was told then that there was nothing else they could do about it. My frame is now very rusted so I asked bill c. To reinspect my frame on 12/5/19 while my Tundra was in for a takata airbag recall. William told me that he had a manager inspect my frame and that no perforations were found (please see all attached photos). They did not mention the catastrophic failure of the frame c channel lower flanges. This exponentially expansive corrosion has reached the leaf spring bracket flange rivets (see photo 8810); catastrophic failure of the rear axle assembly will result. I am a mechanical engineer with extensive training and experience in corrosion related failure. This frame and vehicle are unsafe! on 12/21/19 I emailed this information, including the photographs and copies of all service records, to the Toyota customer care center. They emailed me back on 12/28/19 and asked me to call them. The Toyota representative, jeffery m. , called my dealership and told me that the frame was not perforated so I am not eligible for the frame replacement recall. I asked jeffery multiple times if the dealer said the frame is safe or not. He refused to answer that question and would only state that my frame is not perforated. The NHTSA/Toyota 10mm perforation criteria is inadequate and the phase 2 application bonding failure exacerbated moisture and road salt retention.

31 Frame Rust problem of the 2002 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 11/27/2019

Frame is severely rusted and called about a previous recall to replace the frame but they told me that I had just missed it and the recall had ended? I told them that I had the truck at the time of the recall but was never notified of the recall. I had received other promotions about new vehicle discounts for Toyota owners, but never about any recall on the truck at all? now the frame is rusted even worse but I have to continue to drive the truck because I cannot afford another vehicle at this time! the other day I pulled into my driveway and noticed the vehicle making a noise and when I looked under the vehicle, the fuel tank strap had rusted and fell apart and the fuel tank was hanging down. I had to take a ratchet strap and strap the fuel tank back up to the frame because I have to have the truck to drive to work. I look now and there is a recall about the corrosion on the fuel tank straps and on the spare tire carrier and such and yet again I was not notified about the recall. Had the fuel tank not fell out on me and then me look on your site to find out about it, I would again not have known there even was a recall until it was too late to do anything about it ! I need to know what can be done about getting Toyota to honor the frame replacement recall on my truck that I was never notified about even though I know that they knew I owned it because of the other mail they had sent me about new vehicle offers for current Toyota owners? any and all help appreciated as I cannot afford to buy another truck having so much money in this one that is eventually going to break in half as I drive it down the road which is not safe for me or anyone else on the road around me. I live in kentucky where is one of the primary areas for salt. Thank you, james travis.

32 Frame Rust problem of the 2003 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 11/13/2019

2003 Tundra subject to frame rust deterioration recall which ended this year 2019. This vehicle underwent this recall inspection at Toyota dealership. I was told "paint with rust inhibitor will solve problem". Recent inspections x2 by frame mechanics (now a few years later) resulted in immediate recommendation to not drive due to danger of imminent frame collapse. This vehicle has only 118,000 miles and is otherwise in very good condition. I am sure many others are in same condition - not having frame replaced by manufacturer, or misled by manufacturer's service center. Many accidents likely will occur in future. Owners of these vehicles need to be warned of this danger.

33 Frame Rust problem of the 2006 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 11/01/2019

My 2006 Tundra has a hole in the frame due to rusting out which has made the passenger side sway bar to come detached from the frame. Toyota advised me this model year is not part of any recall for the known frame rust issue with Toyota trucks and refuses to assist in any way to address this issue. Completely unacceptable when Toyota is fully aware of the frame issue. Toyota case # 1911082203.

34 Frame Rust problem of the 2006 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 10/24/2019

Informed that frame has developed rust issues. Vehicle was coated by dealer in 2014 with corrosion resistant compound following a letter indicating Toyota was aware of this issue. Today my mechanic following routine maintenance showed me the rusting frame. 10/24/19. I took vehicle to thompson Toyota service and was informed there is no recall on this years model. I called Toyota and was informed it's not covered. It is upsetting that previous years were covered and sequoia models are covered. .

35 Frame Rust problem of the 2003 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 10/24/2019

The entire frame is rusted - to my shock and I just failed inspection but the truck is gorgeous and runs great with all new tires. I'm currently low income and wonder how the frame recall was missed but the airbag was replaced. Please advise and thank you.
