37 Frame Rust problem of the 2001 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 10/11/2019

Hi, I have a 2001 Tundra that the frame is shot on. I have fixed it a few times to try to keep it on the road but it just keeps getting worse and worse. Its to the point where I feel its not safe to drive anymore but Toyota refuses to fix it. They say it doesn't qualify for their frame recall. I find this hard to believe beings they have replaced thousands of frames for corrosion so clearly they know its an issue but yet mine doesn't qualify. The frame rusted completely in half behind the cab and I welded in a steel plate so I could drive it again. It also has large holes in various other locations of the frame as well. This is a bit ridiculous as the truck only has 135k miles on it.

38 Frame Rust problem of the 2004 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 10/10/2019

I had recently purchased a 2004 Tundra with knowing about the recall for frame rust. I believed Toyota had completed the recall and fixed the problem. Not long after owning the vehicle, I noticed a spot of rust bubbling through the anti corrosion coating. After further inspection, the frame is completely corroded through and cracked. This vehicle was meant to use for travel with my family in it and now it's not safe to drive at all.

45 Frame Rust problem of the 2003 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 09/25/2019

A recall letter was sent for 2003 Tundra for undercoating. Vehicle was taken to dealership and was there for three days. I was told nothing else was needed. I brought attention to dealership about frame recall. I was told my vehicle was not under that recall although the year and model was on the site. Second issue of concern, entire steering line replaced. There was a lack of power steering. Vehicle housed for three days at dealership. Fast forward today, 25 September was brought to my attention by service manager of large amount of frame rust and vehicle was not road worthy. Layers of rusted metal crumbled in manager's hand. As a consumer preventive maintenance repairs have been made. I have asked the dealership for help to resolve ongoing concerns. I am a female retired veteran pleading for help. I love my vehicle performance is the reason the mileage is 260,000 (+). Your attention to this concern would greatly be appreciated.

46 Frame Rust problem of the 2007 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 09/09/2019

The frame and truck bed have severe rust issues. The truck bed is shacking now when driving. The frame was "sprayed" when I bought the car to the dealer. I brought the car to Toyota dealership on winchester road they have noticed a lot of rust on the frame and on the truck bed and advice me to rid of the car because they cannot do nothing about it even trade for another car. I had the truck inspected by my mechanic before I bought and the car seems to be ok. Late on another mechanic pointed out severe. Toyota dealerships inspect the truck and said that it was unsafe to drive. I have to figure out how mysefl how to get a new frame and a new truck bed because I do not know what to do or who to contact. My mechanic advice me to contact NHTSA.

47 Frame Rust problem of the 2004 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 09/02/2019

My 2004 Toyota Tundra sr5 4wd crewcab is showing significant sign of frame rust that's compromising the structural integrity of the frame and thus operational safety of the vehicle. Despite being barely used over the years and at just 144k miles, in certain sections of the frame there are holes where the frame has rusted through. The ride quality feels a bit wobbly, even after examination and rectification of other mechanical issues (suspension, joints, etc. ) upon further research, this issue seems to be pervasive issue among first generation Toyota Tundras made in the us of this period. The result is very premature rust and complete disintegration of the truck frame. The primary cause was poorly made truck frames from a Toyota vendor that ended in a class-action lawsuit. Toyota has offered extended recall to inspect and replace all affected truck frames as appropriate. I seek to be included in this program and proper assessment by an authorized Toyota dealer. As this issue affects both the resale value of my vehicle and more importantly the operational safety of this vehicle, I request that the issue be expedited by the right authorities. Thank you!.

48 Frame Rust problem of the 2006 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 08/26/2019

A few years back had taken the truck in for the frame recall. Underside of the truck was quite rusty and was hoping for a new frame to be put on. Instead, was informed by the dealership that that was not going to happen for my truck. Instead, the frame was to be "undercoated" to protect the truck from further rust. The dealership also informed me that the current procedure from Toyota, at that time, was to only undercoat the cab of the truck and not the entire frame. Dealership stated that they would be undercoating entire frame which they did do. After getting truck back from dealership looked underneath and saw that entire frame was sprayed with some form of black material. Now this undercoating is peeling off and the frame is rusting again.

49 Frame Rust problem of the 2001 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 08/16/2019

Bought truck new in 8/2001. Brought truck to dealer when it was recalled for rust in 2012 and was told rust wasn't bad enough to do anything. Brought truck back to dealer multiple times after 2012 (last in 11/18) and was told everything was fine on each occasion. In 8/2019 I heard a squeak from undercarriage and when I looked, the spare tire crossmember was hanging down and the right side upper shock mount was completely rusted through and the top of the shock was rubbing against the bottom of the truck bed (top shock mount was completely rusted away). Local service center told me to remove the shock and spare tire for safety. This rust is limited to the upper shock mount and the crossmember holding the spare tire. Other crossmembers and frame rails are all stable with only the amount of surface rust expected on a 18 year old vehicle. I do not believe that the dealer did a thorough exam of the truck in 2012, 2018 or other visits I made when I prompted them to check the rust as it related to the recall. I was told that since the campaign for rust was over they couldn't do anything. Based on the fact of only 2-3 areas of catastrophic rust on the frame and components while the rest of the frame and chassis is wearing appropriately I believe that this is a safety issue that should be re-instated - obvious factory defect - no corrosion inhibited applied. The vehicle is still mechanically perfect but the falling spare tire and broken suspension can cause an accident or injury that could be prevented with a recall. I believe that the Toyota dealer did not do a thorough inspection. I also question why I have seen multiple instances of individuals with similar problems who were given anti-corrosion treatment or other efforts made to stop the rust from getting worse - but nothing was done by Toyota to mitigate this problem before it got to this catastrophic level.

50 Frame Rust problem of the 2004 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 08/14/2019

Purchased vehicle from private party. Previous owner informed us of frame recall preformed on vehicle 3/2014 stating Toyota sprayed frame with rust inhibitor, he complained that he wasn't satisfied with the results. Frame is now unsafe. Reinspected by Toyota 8/2019, frame is unsafe but the recall has ended. Vehicle has 133,000 miles and is useless. Toyota put a bandaid on the issue and called it fixed.

51 Frame Rust problem of the 2005 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 08/02/2019

Brakes failed2 times in less than 1 year cause of failure, brake lines rusted through. Frame is very rusty the truck was in motion both times.

52 Frame Rust problem of the 2004 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 07/31/2019

Tundra frame rot and rust. In 2014, we purchased a 2004 Toyota Tundra with 90k miles on it for our 16 year old son to drive. Near the time of purchase in 2014, the truck frame was sprayed by Toyota under their limited service campaign by the person selling us the vehicle. To our surprise, the truck recently failed inspection for a rusted/rotted frame. The current mileage is 122,892. I contacted Toyota and they claim that they addressed the issue with the spraying back in 2014 and are not able to assist further. Nhtsa, please help us. Toyota will not stand behind the defective frames. Please step up and address this issue with Toyota.

53 Frame Rust problem of the 2006 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 07/20/2019

Tl- the contact owns a 2006 Toyota Tundra. The contact stated that while in for routine maintenance the independent mechanic discovered that the sub frame had rusted and corroded. The vehicle was then taken to the local dealer Toyota of brookfield(20655 w. Capital dr, brrokfield WI) who diagnosed that the frame needed to be replaced due to the rusting and corrosion. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 145,000. Jft case 1-907183063.

54 Frame Rust problem of the 2007 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 07/03/2019

2007 Tundra in mint condition. . . . Frame undercoating recall was performed a year ago. . . Dropped the spare tire to change a flat tire and was deeply concerned with the flaking rust on the frame crossmember. Clearly, the coating was sprayed to cover without any prep work or rust removal first. I am seeking a second look. . . Local body shop professional said this was terrible work and the frame life is very limited.

55 Frame Rust problem of the 2004 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 06/24/2019

Frame has rust holes, per Toyota mechanics, my frame continue to rust out cannot pull a trailer with bad frame. Toyota will not honor their work. I am a loyal Toyota customer and has a lot of work done by Toyota dealer. I need my frame repaired to continue using my truck.

56 Frame Rust problem of the 2002 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 06/17/2019

I purchased this truck used in 2015 and was unaware of any recalls due to frame rust. I have replaced tailpipe, muffler, many brake components due to rust problems. The frame now rusted more and I am being told that it may be unsafe to drive. A mechanic told me about this frame rust recall and I took it to fred anderson Toyota in raleigh,nc. The found that all recall items had been completed by the dealer in boone,nc. I find this hard to believe since the rusting issue is much more severe. I just want a fair evaluation of what can or should be done. Fred anderson Toyota in raleigh did have the truck but not sure how far they took the investigation of rust.

57 Frame Rust problem of the 2004 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 06/14/2019

Still having major rust issues on frame following 2015 Toyota recall to coat the frame. This is a major safety issue and I don't know why Toyota stopped at the year 2003 on frame replacements when obviously 2004 year just as bad. Everytime I back out of my garage I see rust debris. Come on NHTSA do your job and recall these safety concerns !!!.

58 Frame Rust problem of the 2008 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 06/14/2019

Bought 2008 Tundra in 2015. Body excellent shape. Had 46000 miles on it. Blowed a brake line and put on rack to make repairs this past month. Brake lines rusted and frame is rotten. I can run my finger through the frame. I paid 25. 000. 00 for this truck. Was towing a camper when brake line blew. Was hardly able to get camper home. Will you folks replace this frame? or will you stand good for it. I still owe on it. It is parked for the time being and not safe to drive.

59 Frame Rust problem of the 2006 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 06/10/2019

This vehicle had the frame recall done by a local dealer - Toyota of nashua in nashua, nh - and the dealer performed the undercoating remedy poorly, and not per the guidelines of the recall. Within a year the undercoating started flaking off, and I now have a 2-3" hole in the frame, caused by rust. Recall undercoating was done in 2014. Dealer is telling me there's nothing they can do, Toyota is telling me the same thing. They're letting me deal with my own rusted frame that they should be responsible for.

60 Frame Rust problem of the 2005 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 06/07/2019

Sept 2014 my trucks frame was recalled for the rust problem. The frame was scaled and sprayed. Mileage 134,500. 6/2018 with mileage 164,301 dealer advises me frame is getting rusty! I said you scaled and coated it in 2014 isn't it warranted? there answer was that ended last month. Now it's a year later June 2019 it only has 171,000 and only 36,500 miles since the frame was coated. The Toyota dealer failed the nh state inspection. I am very upset as I have spent over $4500 in the past 18 months on other repairs and on gone 8k miles. I never would have done those repairs if I was advise how bad ir how fast the rust was going to make my truck unsafe to drive. Why did other trucks get new frames because they drove more miles then me and had there frames rust fasted. There are trucks now of the same age with new frames with well over 200k +miles because there frames rusted faster( time wise). This is not fair for those who still have junk frames. All the framed are junk! but many get stuck with them because it took longer to rust to the point of failer because we drove them fewer miles per year! my frame has failed in the same places as every frame that has been replaced, but because it lasted past may 2018 my truck is junk now but the person who's frame rusted out before may 18 gets to continue driving it with there replacement frame! how is this fair???? if my frame wasn't scaled and coated it would have rusted before may 2018 and been replace! they just made it last longer to get past the may 2018 date!.

61 Frame Rust problem of the 2000 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 06/03/2019

Frame rust so bad truck will not pass state inspection. This condition found on annual state inspection. From pics mechanic took, I am now afraid to drive vehicle. Some attachment brackets/bars not even connected and rusted completely in half. I called Toyota corporate and they said there was no recall on this vehicle nor any type of buy back program for it. Sad that this truck was not repaired as this was a known issue with 2000-2003 Tundras and now I am stuck with a vehicle that Toyota will not repair due to age. Seems this repair work should be available to any consumer who owns the vehicle if the recall work has never been performed on the vehicle? I am just second owner of vehicle and have only owned the vehicle just over a year. Although high mileage, this truck runs and looks great.

62 Frame Rust problem of the 2003 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 05/15/2019

I had a safety recall for corrosion and had it repaired at the dealership in July, 2015. Recently I returned to the dealership for an exhaust leak. When they put it on the rack they noted several areas on the frame which had rusted all the way through. The mechanic informed me the truck was unsafe to drive and the frame needed to be replaced. I contacted Toyota and was told my VIN was not part of any recall and therefor Toyota would not replace the frame. I believe the same inferior steel was used on my frame as was on the recalled Toyotas. I live in virginia which while we don't experience the large amounts of snow here, we are still considered a northern state per Toyota. The truck has never been in an accident and was used as a daily driver and now will be a total loss.

63 Frame Rust problem of the 2004 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 05/10/2019

Our 2004 Tundra with 65,000 miles was recently identified to have a rusty frame. We put it into the dealership to see what could be done. The dealership deemed it rusty to the point that it could not be coated and was a loss. We contacted Toyota and they said the frame programe was for 2000-03 and is now expired and our 2004 wasn't covered. This is a major safety issue. There are hundreds of thousands of trucks on the road that are still affected by the faulty frames and Toyota is not doing anything. This leaves consumers with a vehicle that is worthless and dangerous. A recall is needed to protect our families and the roads we travel on. We are going to start seeing vehicles come apart on the roads and killing people.

64 Frame Rust problem of the 2004 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 04/12/2019

2004 Tundra frame rusted and will not pass inspection. Inspector noted rust holes larger than a quarter.

65 Frame Rust problem of the 2004 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 04/11/2019

Excessive rust on sub-frame of vehicle; frontal sub-frame completely rusted out on vehicle with no apparent body rust; garaged throughout its history; and with less than 100k miles; rear frame rusted.

66 Frame Rust problem of the 2004 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 04/01/2019

I have a 2004 Toyota trundra with only 93,000 miles on it , that has never hardly ever set outside, with frame rust behind front wheels that I can stick my finger though it. . . . It is unsafe to drive on the highway,, and I have not had a recall on frame rust repair. . But have had a air bag and over spare tire support recall . . I only notice this when getting a tire repaired,in April of 2019, it was pointed out to me by repairman, , don't know how long it's been this way.

67 Frame Rust problem of the 2004 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 04/01/2019

Tl the contact owns a 2004 Toyota Tundra. While the vehicle was undergoing routine maintenance, the contact was able to see that the frame was rusted. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The dealer and manufacturer were made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was 224,300.

68 Frame Rust problem of the 2004 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 04/01/2019

My frame is rusting almost into, I don't think it was inspected well, and now the rear axle housing is rusted so bad it's leaking fluid.

69 Frame Rust problem of the 2005 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 03/20/2019

My 2005 Toyota Tundra has 217k miles and is, mechanically, in terrific shape, except the frame has rusted out on the drivers side. Structurally, it's still drivable safely, but it will no longer pass state inspection (maine, USA). Thousands of other Toyota Tundras of the same style and manufacturing process and similar model year have had frame recalls done for the exact same reason. I do not feel it is fair to skip this year. This is my family's only source of transportation right now, and it is vital to keep it on the road. Please allow a frame recall for this model year!.

70 Frame Rust problem of the 2006 Toyota Tundra

Failure Date: 03/20/2019

Toyota frame rust: I was informed by my local mechanic today that my 2006 Toyota Tundra will not pass virginia's yearly safety inspection because of hole in the frame as a result of corrosion. My truck participated in Toyota's limited service campaign d0d in 2014 and a rust resistant coating was applied to combat a known corrosion issue with their truck frames. I was told the frame was inspected, found to be clean, and the coating applied. I contacted Toyota and was told "there is nothing we can do for you". I have found existing lawsuits addressing this exact issue on other Toyota models including 2007 and 2008 Tundras. The settlement in these cases involve complete frame replacement. It is obvious to me that Toyota knows there is something wrong, but choosing to do nothing.
